Tamashii Ramen - Review - Forest Hills - New York - The Infatuation

"There are several things you should be able to locate. Your keys, for example. And the nearest post office to your apartment. Also, the best ramen in your neighborhood. In Forest Hills, that’s Tamashii, a mini-chain that also has locations in Astoria and Long Island City. They serve a bunch of different types of ramen (including a few vegetarian options), along with some rice bowls and small plates like fried chicken and dumplings. Come for a weeknight meal the next time you want a bowl of noodles and possibly a few servings of sake." - Bryan Kim

I recently tried the Spicy Miso Ramen here, but unfortunately it wasn’t quite what I was hoping for. The flavor didn’t really suit my taste, and the seasoned egg seemed like it may not have been as fresh as expected. The interior of the restaurant does have touches that give it a Japanese-inspired feel, but the space felt a little dark and somewhat worn. Overall, while the service was polite and the atmosphere had potential, the dining experience itself left me a bit disappointed. It might simply come down to personal preference, but I don’t think this ramen was the right fit for me.

Had a great experience at this restaurant. Our server was attentive, friendly, and fast! The Tornado Shrimp were a unique and tasty appetizer the dumplings were great too. We were in the mood for sushi and it was great. So if you are looking for sushi in this neighbourhood check them out.

Google
It was good ramen with many options for broth to choose from. I got the spicy miso, but it wasn’t very spicy. The waitress shield us away from ordering spicier, but we were disappointed with how underwhelming the spicy level was for medium and hot. Restaurant seating is cozy. Nothing stellar or standout about the food. It was satisfactory ramen, and served hot. We enjoyed the karaage chicken app. Service was okay, they weren’t super busy but didn’t check on us much.

Google
The ramen noodles had a great consistency to them. The place looked great, and service was excellent. The only thing I wished was that the bathroom was out of service when I was there but I assume that's temporary.

Came to grab an early dinner with a friend. The place wasn't too busy and the food was good. Parking can be difficult to come by. I had the fire Tonkotsu which was not spicy for my taste.

I first off would like to apologize to Jane for it taking me so long to post this review. I was in town for the WWE Wrestlemania event. However, my brother and I had a craving for Ramen. Now I travel all around the world and often for work. And a good bowl of Ramen is very hard to come by these days. I must say when we arrived we were seated swiftly with the order placed within the first ten minutes food just started to arrive to the table. Not only was everything a delightful image that was presented but everything tasted so phenomenal. I would like to recommend the house blend of tea they offer. (It needs to be bottled up and packaged and sold across the world). Altogether, I must say this place is now a new stable and hidden gem for me whenever I’m in the LA area. Trust me it’s worth the drive as long as you can find parking.

Google
What a wonderful Gem of a Ramen place. I came here expecting standard Ramen fare but there selection was awesome. They had homemade drinks such as iced honey ginger and Ice honey citrus, they had dim sum, their chicken ramen broth is to die for. Outdoor seating was nicely lit and not too cold. I will definitely come back the next time I am at Universal Studios.

Google
Interesting decor and looks staff. Menu is quite long and involved but I went with the Tonkotsu Black and that was a good choice. The broth was flavourful without being overwhelming, the noodles were the perfect consistency and the chashu was well cooked. Will definitely come back to try some other menu items. Yelp
The perfect spot for a cozy meal when it's cold and rainy outside. The vibe here is very casual and relaxed. The portions are also filling. We ordered the chicken ramen and the beef brisket ramen. Both the chicken and the beef were incredible tender and the broth was packed with flavor. The chicken ramen has a lighter, slightly creamier broth, but the beef ramen is more savory. I would say my favorite of the two would be the beef ramen, despite the amount of fat attached to the pieces of beef. For appetizers I recommend the crispy chicken. Not only does it come out piping hot (I love when my food comes out extremely hot), but the crunch from the batter is perfect. If you're not counting on just the broth to hydrate you, I also recommend pairing your meal with a super rich and delicious Thai tea. I wouldn't expect constant check-ins from the staff here, but you're so focused on your incredible meal that you don't really mind. Plus, they're always close by anyways if you need some help.

Yelp
I had lunch here with my friend. We arrived when they were just opening for the day. We were promptly greeted and seated. We ordered and finished our meal but no one had entered this place other than us. The girl who assisted us was very friendly but I think that's the only thing worth remembering about our experience. We arrested Tamashii wings and Karage chicken for appetizers. We also ordered a bowl of ramen for each one of us. I don't remember which kind but I know my friend ordered a certain kind of spicy ramen while I ordered a regular ramen that's not spicy. This restaurant is located in a busy neighborhood in NoHo so parking can be very tough. There's limited metered parking along Magnolia Blvd

Yelp
Usually don't get ramen when I choose something to eat but this spot is amazing. The broth is really good. The karage was also very good.

Yelp
Was in North Hollywood so decided to try a new to ramen spot. I live a good ramen, and the reviews were offer for starts, so in we went! Started off with a drink order, just got a Chai Tea and it was ok, didn't really stand out one way or another. But we weren't there due to, we were there for ramen. We each order something different, the Tonkotsu Shio, black Tonkotsu and spicy Tonkotsu. The Tonkotsu Shio uses a salt forged pork broth to go skiing with the usual ingredients with the noodles, seaweed, bamboo shoots, pork, egg, etc. Honestly, this broth was the least liked amongst our group. And the one who used it didn't even eat half of the bowl. She just didn't like it. The black Tonkotsu is designed with a black garlic oil. The garlic flavor does come through when mixed thoroughly, though it starts to max the goodies of everything else in the bowl. The spicy Tonkotsu was the best of the bunch, thought the broth could use a little extra love. But, with the spiciness, and the biggest which had a little chew to them, it wasn't bad. Overall, as a group, we felt there was a lot more to be desired here that we didn't get in our dishes, especially with the variety of ramen places around Los Angeles. I'd say, if you're in North Hollywood, and absolutely NEED rather immediately, then get the Spicy Tonkotsu, but, overall, you can find better ramen elsewhere

Yelp
What better way to enjoy this gloomy weather than to feast on this meal? The warmness and flavor brought the cozy vibes to me. The restaurant is decorated nicely while tying in the culture. The staff was very prompt and friendly with attending to us! Everything was smooth from start to finish :) The food came out hot and fresh, no complaints whatsoever. The sauces pair so nicely with the spring rolls, I even dipped the gyoza into it and I fell in love!! I'm drooling thinking about this meal, I can't wait to have it again. The crunchy texture from the bamboo l was the nicest touch to set this dish apart from other ramen spots I've tried.

Yelp
Black Tonkotsu is not as flavorful as Jinya's. Jinya's black Tonkotsu has a stronger and fattier taste to it, which I prefer. The pork slices here are thicker than Jinya's but less tender. Beef ramen's supposed to be "topped with beef brisket" but the beef was small chunks, not briskets. The flavor is not bad but nothing to write home about. Banana leaf wrapped sticky rice was very flavorful. Seaweed salad is da bomb! Service was great! Overall not bad at all but I still prefer Jinya's ramen.

Yelp
Came here for the first time for lunch and it was so good!! I got the black tonkotsu with pork and it was delish! Noodles were thick and chewy but not too long so it was easy to use a spoon, which I really enjoyed. This will definitely be a place to return to!

Yelp
Wow! Found this place by pure luck, was taking a car dealership break to go eat, when we drove past this place that looked good & decided to stop by. The noodles and broth were so flavorful and tasty. Luckily for a Friday night we were able to be seated right away. Service and food was quick. So happy we stumbled in on this place!

Yelp
Food: WOW the food is amazing. All the food tasted fresh and was incredibly flavorful! We got 5 appetizers and 2 bowl of ramen and it was so delicious. service: The host was incredibly welcoming and friendly and attentive. Ambiance. The space is great. Parking can be hard but, the space itself is well lit, not too hot not too cold, and overall good

Yelp
First of all, we always been wanting to come here but everytime we try before it was always full and finally we got a chance to try the ramen here since we live nearby. Due to my busy schedule at school, I wasn't able to leave a review right away. So here I am been wanting to share our experience here. First of all, the staffs are all friendly and welcoming and we have our favorite Filipina lady now. She is so sweet that next when we get the chance again we definitely want to come visit again. I didn't order ramen but I did order the chachu rice since i have been craving for it. I've been eating too much Ramen for years but I will definitely come back and try the ramen here for sure. And I fell inlive with the piggy bun definitely!!! If you are a ramen lover who lives in NoHo, this place is worth to visit. The ramen place has its own unique interior design which is nice and big space. Very cozy and welcoming atmosphere.

Yelp
I pass this place everyday on the way home and today i finally caved.. The food was ridiculously good!! Their meats are super juicy and fatty which is definitely a HUGEEE + for me! The ramen is pretty good ( solid 8.5/10), I got my spice level at a 7 and it was perfecttt! I also love how they have more noodle options (rice, kale and gluten free noodle) since I am GF. The service was very quick and all of the staff were super welcoming, friendly and interactive! Overall, everything was pretty great, tab was around $52 bucks which is not toooo bad. My only recommendation would probably be some background music, It was very quiet when I arrived (4:40pm). Other than that, I will 100% be a returning customer and definitely recommend checking this place out.

Yelp
Some faves that we ordered Spicy miso was good, it's rich in flavor. Pork chashu bowl was great they don't hold back with the pork meat. Avocado roll was also good, avocado's were fresh. The staff are friendly and very nice.

Samantha F.

Yelp
Food is always great, always quiet which is nice, and very quick to be seated as well. I'm pretty bummed, because i use to come here frequently when living in this area, and i drive over two hours to revisit everything. Once our server noticed our bowls were almost empty she quickly dropped the check, we put our card down not thinking anything of it no big deal we will continue eating. We get our card back, check paid she asked how we liked everything I responded "it's really cold out so I'm enjoying my hot tea still thank you" immediate response "you want a to go cup?" N proceeds to drop a cup on the table. I felt rather rushed, there was so much seating available for walk ins so I don't understand the immediate push of "you paid now get out."

Yelp
On a cold day, ramen always hits the spot! We tried Tamashii, since it was local to us. We picked up the food and it's a 5 min drive home, they had done a great job of packaging, so when we got home it was nice and hot! I was only in the restaurant for few min to pick up the food, it was nice and clean. Here comes the but :/ and I'm disappointed in saying this, since it's a close place and we would have been regulars if it was good. We got a chicken and a pork ramen, but both meats were bad, we only ate few bites and only finished the ramen. Also, one our meals had a choice of boiled egg, but it was black :/. I dont know what's a standard egg in a ramen but we are used to a nice white boiled egg with a nice yellow yolk (needless to say, the egg was sidelined too).

Gummi C.

Yelp
Always seen this place driving down magnolia and finally decided to give it a try. The inside is very cute and decorated. I had the spicy miso ramen and it did not disappoint. It was super flavorful + rich & the portions are pretty big and I couldn't finish it even though I really wanted to. Definitely will be coming again.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice chill spot to have some ramen and chat it up. The food was really fresh and well prepared. They also have really good specials. Not the best ever service but would definitely come back and bring friends. Thank you!
google avatar

Tessa H.

Yelp
Yamashii is a quiet ramen joint tucked away in North Hollywood. It was definitely on the pricey side (~$19 per bowl), and nothing to write home about. They did have a good selection of chicken ramen, which was nice. I enjoyed spicy chicken ramen (medium heat) and it was definitely pretty spicy! Servers were overall attentive but did forget to bring our box and check. No worries, we just paid up front.

Yelp
This place is in the center of where everything is happening in North Hollywood. I stumbled in here on a whim on a Friday night and our experience was top notch. The service was prestine. The food was delectable. The food filled our hearts to its content. The spicy miso ramen was delish.
google avatar

G G.

Yelp
Went here on a whim... ok, not a whim, but we had to pee really bad and were a little bit hungry, so we decided to stop and try this place. We didn't get any ramen, but a few items from the HH menu and a couple of appetizers. The miso soup was good. Basic with pretty decent chunks of tofu. The shrimp pops were good, actually the best of the 4 things we had. Crunchy and came with 2 little side sauces (sweet chili and spicy mayo). They were like those frozen shrimp you can get in a box at the grocery store. Chicken karaage was weird and gross. It wasn't chunks of chicken, but a whole bunch of Frankenstein pieces that were deep fried into incognito. Weird back bone and neck bones included. They gave us gloves to tear them apart because all of the pieces were apparently melded together when they were fried. No flavor, either. The sushi tuna roll was sad, cold, and flavorless. It didn't seem super clean either, and the workers looked like they were tired. It was an expensive potty break, and TBH, I wouldn't go back even if I had to pee really bad.

Yelp
Ramen was rich and comforting with a flavorful broth and perfectly cooked noodles. The pork was tender and the egg was just right with a soft center. Staff was friendly and attentive, and the food came out hot and fast. The cozy atmosphere made it a great place to enjoy a warm bowl of ramen with friends.

Yelp
Great food! And best service! Elaine was very helpful. Shoyu tonkatsu was on point and their gyoza was so juicy
google avatar

Emily H.

Yelp
California roll was yummy! I would come back again! We ordered ramen and roll, dimsum looked good too but we were full, will definitely order next time
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
Most flavorless ramen I've ever had. It aint cheap either. I asked for more spices and such on the side (which was even more $$$) to try to make it better and still just tasted like boiled water. I liked that there was indoor and outdoor seating, service was quick but nothing really else to note - Definitely not the ramen spot for me.
google avatar

Trenise D.

Yelp
I've never dined in, I've only had takeout and the flavor is on point. I always get an extra egg in my ramen because they are perfectly seasoned and made. Sooo good.
google avatar

G B.

Yelp
We came here with the family on Tuesday evening and parking was easy. When we walked in Rex greeted us with a warm and welcoming feeling like we were at his home. The food here is amazing. Everything is delicious black tonkotsu is so flavorful and the appetizer fried karage was great as well. Definitely will Be back
google avatar

Laura N.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite restaurants in the neighborhood! Every ramen I've had here has been great. The ramen is a little expensive for ramen though. The inside is nothing special. The metal chairs aren't very comfy and so loud when you move them at all. The best part is the staff. They are always welcoming and really kind!

Bram P.

Yelp
Small servings with DISGUSTING pork ... the server forgot our drinks for the entire meal and was dressed in sweatpants and sweatshirt (which usually wouldn't matter but given everything else) They didn't ask once how our food was it was just disappointing all around
google avatar

Rudy O.

Yelp
10 out 10, randomly found this place in January. I've been back 3 times since. Definitely would recommend it. There are lots of different menu options for anyone. The Amiance is very quaint and welcoming.

Savanna C.

Yelp
Love this place Rex always provides excellent service when me and my boyfriend come in! Food is delicious my go to is the spicy chicken ramen with a Thai tea whenever I come!!
google avatar

Elvira D.

Yelp
Yum. This place continues to leave a warm, lovely impression from its authentic homey ambiance, quality comfort food, and very friendly service. I'm really craving this spot and can't wait to go back. I'm definitely getting their piggy-faces dumplings since I'm feeling like a middle schooler. Please support this small business! PARKING: So difficult....street parking
google avatar

Pauline W.

Yelp
3/20/22 My boyfriend and I were looking for a spot to eat after our hike before taking the long drive back to San Francisco. We parked about one block away which was 2 hour free parking. Luckily, they had a patio where we could sit since we had Coco with us. When we got there, we were greeted by one of the waitress who gave off a vibe that she didn't want to be at work. Her attitude and tone for the duration of when she was sitting us and taking our order indicated that she could care less (about anything?) That kind of threw us off, but we didn't reciprocate the attitude. Here's what we ended up getting: 1. Spicy miso ramen (his) 2. Black tonkotsu ramen (mine) 3. Tempura Sweet Potato (share) Our second waiter who brought out the tempura was the complete opposite of the first staff member. He was super friendly and even brought out a water bowl for Coco. The sweet potato tempura was pretty good and the breading was crispy and not too oily. The ramen was just okay. I was still hungry afterwards because all I got in my bowl was a small handful of noodles, two very thin slices of pork and half an egg. When I went to go pay for our food, the cashier made a very rude comment about Coco saying that she was an ugly dog... I was so shocked and taken by surprise that I couldn't say anything. Never have I heard ANYONE call my dog ugly...we will not be returning.

snaila s.

Yelp
Service was quick, I ordered the black tonkotsu and was very pleasantly surprised by the seasoning of the egg. Some places do a simple marinade but this one was as delicious as the broth! Also, for anyone else that likes lychee ramune then get yours here :)
google avatar

Lan B.

Yelp
Perfect ramen every time. I often also just get a bunch of appetizers because they are so good! The service is friendly and fast. There is also the best neighborhood to walk around in.
google avatar

Yelp
My go to spot for ramen! The food is so warm and delicious. I can drink the soup daily. Love the beef ramen and the spicy miso! Always recommend the his place
google avatar

Miguel S.

Yelp
The place smells funny, the sushi did not taste fresh, and the wasabi was outright stale. Good service though, it's a shame they have to work at a place like this.
google avatar

Cameron C.

Yelp
This place is a good solid 4 stars. We ordered the chicken Chashu and tonkotsu shoyu ramen. The chicken chashu was delicious. The ramen was pretty good. I have had better. Not too flavorful. Good little spot if you live close by and want solid ramen. Servers were very nice and fast and kept our waters full. Good prices. Cute restaurant great for dates or casual.
google avatar

Anabel G.

Yelp
We came here on a Sunday afternoon & were seated immediately. We decided to try this spot because a friend recommended it. Staff were attentive. Environment was clean. I had the spicy tonkotsu I forgot what level it was but it really didn't have any flavor, it did have spice but it was very plain. For both things we ordered it lacked flavor & tasted plain unfortunately.

Jordan B.

Yelp
Got the katsu curry bowl and the thick curry was delicious! Also got an order of gyoza and it was fried perfectly!

Yelp
First time visiting this part of town and found this ramen place to eat lunch with friends. The dining area is cozy and have cool decor. The staff is very nice and hospitable. Their menu has good variety and we all tried different items. Their food is really good! Good quality and delicious! Food came within reasonable wait time and fresh. If we don't live more than an hour away we'll definitely be regulars. Highly recommended!

Joyce V.

Yelp
Broth from Ramen was delicious and flavorful. There was no wait time and we were seated quickly. Place was nice.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious food! Had the black ramen and shumai. Perfect food for a rainy night. The service was great as well! Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Leo J.

Yelp
Service was fast, the spicy chicken ramen I ordered was just the right amount of spicy, the Thai tea is perfect.

Fiona Z.

Yelp
Food is authentic Japanese, place is cozy and looked like classic Japanese restaurant, service was fast.

Eduardo M.

Yelp
I love this place so much but sucks we had a shitty experience. We walk in at 9pm and the server right away tells my gf and I "we close at 9:30pm" we both look at each other and I ask "so can we sit and eat?" He's like "we close at 9:30pm" so we are still like ok... so then my gf asks "can we order to go?" He says "yeah but we close at 9:30pm" so we just felt uncomfortable and left! Really bad experience and hopefully we have a better outcome next time.
google avatar

Marc S.

Yelp
We were in the area and stopped by because of the Yelp rating. The server was friendly and it didn't take long for them to bring the food. I had the black tonkatsu. The temperature was just right for me and the broth was delicious. I also think the egg was tastier than what I had at other places. I would definitely recommend and would definitely return.
google avatar

Inna B.

Yelp
This place is a gem - very good food and the service was awesome!! Jane is amazing!! We will be back!!
google avatar

Christy B.

Yelp
Came here on the whim on husband's request. I already liked the vibe and since it was their 10 year anniversary, I decided to try their (spicy) chicken ramen, which was really good. My husband got the Fire Tonkatsu with level 10 and was impressed. And yes, their Thai Tea is a staple and a must get. Lastly, our server Geraldine was a sweet doll! She made our first time here a great one.
google avatar

Bonnie G.

Yelp
One of my favorite local places. I'm a fan of the buns! :) Jane is great and always takes good care of us!

john l.

Yelp
Not good. Broth was so so. Pork was almost inedible and the curry was like really bad homemade curry and didn't taste good. I would not recommend this place. We should've gone to Jinya.
