Best Yakima Valley Mexican Food Spots Feature Tamales, Tacos, and Locally Sourced Ingredients - Eater Seattle

"Before opening Tammy’s Mexican Restaurant in 2005, Tammy Rivera was known for preparing small meals for her colleagues. The restaurant is best known for its menudo, a traditional Mexican breakfast stew, and slow-roasted birria, an adobo-spiced goat or mutton stew from Jalisco." - Kelly Knickerbocker

You want an authentic flavor and atmosphere and you get it at Tammy's. Great service, hot flavorful meals. Great portions for the price. I was stuffed 3/4 of the way through my burrito platter and took the rest to go for leftovers.

My to go order was Poor. Reason for that my food had nothing but 2 bones. No meat I did call the restaurant to see how they would deal with the situation . The lady was really rude on the phone with me . Told me to bring back my order when I all ready had just got to my home which I live 20 minutes away. She didn’t let me finish talking with her on the phone and hung up on me.

Had, caldo de res, beef soup, came with delicious big corn tortillas, but it wasn't hot, I had to ask for napkins, I only got one, I had to ask for the fixings, lime, onions and cilantro, other than that it was very good! Small bowl and a Coke for a total of $17.00, I recommend you visit...

Yelp
When you live in the Pacific Northwest, but you grew up in Arizona, you face a harsh reality: good, authentic Mexican food can be hard to find. Which makes Tammy's a pleasant surprise indeed. You can tell from the outside, just driving by - Tammy's isn't trying too hard to get your attention. Its simple storefront reminded me immediately of the many family-owned Mexican restaurants in Phoenix, and walking through the door only confirmed it: Tammy's is the real deal. The decor is warm and comfortable, the staff speaks mostly Spanish and most of the customers are Hispanic too. The dishes on the menu are more than the cheese-and-beans remixes most PNW Mexican restaurants offer - this is the kind of food someone's abuela might cook for you on a warm day in Mesa. And while the portions are healthy, you'll want to eat every bite and savor all the flavor. I tried the Milanesa de Res and cleaned my plate - the flour tortillas that came with it were obviously homemade and the perfect accompaniment. There are a lot of Mexican restaurants in Yakima, but take my advice: if you're looking for the real deal, Tammy's is the place to go.

Yelp
Clean, classic, matching the culture style look as you walk in. Employees were very friendly and also gave suggestions. They give you an actual meal when served and everything tastes one of a kind. They will continue getting my business and I will always speak good word of Tammy's.

Yelp
Our favorite authentic Mexican food as found in Mexico...not dripping in melted cheese. Their food is so fresh. My spouse and I go for lunch about every week or two. Since it's lunch, we like to eat light with the appetizers selections. My spouse loves the adobada and asada tostada. I love the beef tongue taco(!) and chicken tostada. We have tried other items like their burritos and enchiladas, all excellent. When friends from Seattle & Spokane come to town, it's one of the places where we meet per their request. The restaurant is clean and staff is very friendly and attentive. I'm craving it now! Thanks

Yelp
When we came in, it was quiet with just a few tables of couples. Within ten minutes, a bus load of teenage girls and their chaperones came in. I don't fault the restaurant for their behavior, but they really ruined our date. They were so loud we couldn't talk to each other. One girl went on for nearly ten minutes describing her diarrhea. If you're reading this review, and you bring young people to restaurants, step up to train them about how to behave in a restaurant. Tell them to talk more quietly, to consider other customers, and to talk about things that are appropriate at the table. The lady who helped us seemed very warm and welcoming. I liked her. Made us feel like family. I loved that the tortillas were brought out in such homey tea towels. The asada was fine. The beans were very watery. The rice didn't have a lot of flavor. The salad was just bagged salad. I had a agua fresca that was good. Salsa was brought out early, but there were no chips, so we had nothing to try it on. I felt like I wanted to like this place more, and that was disappointing. Chips should come out with the salsa. They should use fresher greens.

Yelp
We each had two ground beef tostadas and they were very good. The meat was not over-seasoned, and just a bit of the green sauce on top added that flavor.

Yelp
There are a lot of Mexican restaurants in Yakima. For me Tammy's offers authentic casual dining. The waitstaff are always friendly and helpful. The food always fresh and delicious. Most are a little hotter than I am use to but all are flavorful. This visit I had the quesadilla and it wasn't hot at all and oh so tasty. My partner ordered a vegetarian burrito, the green sauce carried some heat but still scrumptious. I always like this place

Yelp
We stopped in on a random Monday evening after deciding we wanted to try the new Mexican spot. We have heard good things about this place and so we decided to check it out. I went back-and-forth between a three and a four for this place and ultimately settled on the floor because the standard Mexican food was top-notch! The place is very nondescript and is down on N. 1st St. It has a fairly small parking lot, but there's room for eight or 10 cars. Upon entering, there's plenty of seating and an old-school Mexican restaurant feel. We were greeted promptly and sat down to peruse the menu. They have daily specials including chicken molé on Mondays. We got sent to chicken as well as a smattering of standard Mexican delights. We grabbed a bunch of tacos, a Dorada and a Huarache. These are all phenomenal. The tacos are done perfectly and had a ton of meat! The Dorada is a recent find and is effectively a fried taco. It is awesome! The huarache was basically an elongated sopé - it was like a Mexican French bread pizza- legit! The molé was the low point. It wasn't bad but the flavor of the sauce was just a little bit off from what we've traditionally had and it is not something we would order again. It was partially made up for however by the tortillas, which may have been the best we've ever tasted. They serve a stewed goat meat Friday-Sunday and I think we'll need to come back to try it! They have plenty of different drink options including pop in glass bottles and tons of different flavors of Jarritos. They also have a number of different juice options some of which include beets and celery. Not my dog, but I'm glad it exists. The place is very affordable and at the end of the day served up some really good Mexican food! After going back for the goat, they may get the five star bump!

Yelp
customer service was a no go from the start. they took so an hour to bring out 4 tacos took another 30 minutes to bring out the days special Menudo . i thought the long wait meant amazing food but the meat was dry and they brought out the wrong order. it was a disappointment to say the least. if they had informed us that the wait was long we would've chosen a different place.

Yelp
Delicious food. This is where we go for authentic menudo. Older reviews were before new management so take them with a grain of salt.

Yelp
Everything about the food here screams hot and fresh. There is so much flavor in every bite. I have not had a meal I didn't like. Whenever I am craving Mexican food this is my go-to. Sunday's are good days to grab some menudo and you have a side of fresh tortillas with all the fixings. They don't skimp on the meat! But they do serve it everyday if you want to skip out on the Sunday crowds. Sunday's and lunch time is when it's the busiest, sometimes it's a bit of a wait depending on the crowd but it's so worth it. It's small, cozy, family owned, very friendly vibe. If you are homesick and crave your mommas food this is definitely the place to go. All the tortillas are hand made and huge! Their salsas are also so delicious.

Yelp
Awesome food! The best in town if you ask me... Just today I sat and waited for like half an hour for my order witch was CALLED IN half hour prior to this! Granted they where busy but I was asked by 3 different waitresses the name on my order time and time again and as well as the gentleman that seems like the manager... Other then that 5 stars and I will still be back hopefully their service gets a little more convenient. *edit* I'm still sitting here waiting. I was charged of course witch insures their benefit. *edit #2* I get home and open the orders and there is literally bean juice instead of beans and a small scoop of rice I have changed my stars from 5 to 2... I really don't know if I'll be back after going threw this.... *edit #3!* DON'T BOTHER TO CALL AND VOICE YOUR EXPERIENCE! All they said was to come back for more beans! No profesionalism what so ever for customer appreciation. They lost me!

Yelp
real mexican food! I loved my meal it tasted like real home made food. the service was amazing and i will definitely be coming back

Yelp
Cozy, not too crowded, had a homey feel like you're at someone's kitchen. The food was average despite the generous portion, had the tostadas and huaraches which were kinda similar in taste somehow. I'm not really familiar with Mexican cuisine but this is probably the greasiest I've had so far.

Yelp
Wow. I stopped by Tammy's on a quick overnight trip seeking a good breakfast. Thankfully, I chose the Chilaquiles with green salsa. It was amazing. I don't know that I have the vocabulary to describe a meal that stands out from others, so I simply highly recommend checking it out for yourself.

Yelp
Exceptional, authentic Mexican food. I've had the street tacos & the burritos. Legit!

Daisy S.

Yelp
This place had horrible customer service. After we ordered our food we waited over 40 minutes for the FIRST plate to come out. After that the food got brought out one by one with about 10 minutes in between. When we got the last plait of food is was about 40 minutes since the first plate. And to make matters worse there was a hair in the food. Disgusting. So disappointed with everything about this place. Only giving it one star because I can't give it less.

Chuys T.

Yelp
My friend recommend it this place , after a night of party we wanted some good menudo for the hangover. We got there really excited, we went on a Sunday so it was super busy but we patently waited finally they took our order friendly waitress about 20 minutes later we got our food and I was really disappointed food was not to my expectations, I mean it was eatable but not satisfactory I had to go to macdonalds after. I probably just went on the wrong day the bolt way to find out is to go try it out your self.

Julie R.

Yelp
Great food, especially enjoyed the carne asada, the meat was wonderfully flavorful, and homemade corn tortillas - piping hot. Appreciated the accommodation for our kids who wanted their burritos 'just so'. We came here a few days ago and drove back the same way just so we could go here again. We are putting Tammy's on our go to list for Yakima!

Yelp
Well been here twice. Both time I was not to impressed. This is just my opinion. There is only one way to find out if you like a restaurant. Service was a little slow. Food had a wired taste. Coffee did not taste to good. My coffee cup was dirty on the edges. Staff was friendly. For me this is not my choice of restaurant for Mexican food. Like I said you have to try it and make your on choice and opinion.

Yelp
Tacos de asada are delicious. Went on a Sunday for lunch and space was limited. Definitely will return.

Yelp
Had read some of the bad reviews but decided to try on a friends reccomendation and are so glad we did!! Lunch specials are only $4.99 and are so authentic and delicious!! Fast and friendly staff. They did get my order wrong but were promt to fix it and once it came it was soooo worth the wait (Adobada Encheladas). Cant wait to go back! A new fav lunch spot!
google avatar

Jenna W.

Yelp
Our group ordered some tacos/sopes for a snack. The homemade corn tortillas are DELICIOUS. We recommend adobada - really flavorful.

Yelp
This place makes the best food this side of the boarder and boy does it beat the heck out of taco bell! The food is cheap and tasty. Yall don't know what yall are missing. The wierd candies by the cash register are the best!

Suzanna M.

Yelp
I have eaten at Tammy's a few times. Their prices are very good and the food is decent. The issues began when calling in orders for pick up. On several occassions we haven't gotten all of our orders. They always they say the food will be ready in 15 minutes and when I have arrived to pick it up I have had to wait anywhere from 15-20 minutes. All that I have overlooked because I think they're food is alright and I know they get busy BUT this last time was unacceptable. Again i was told the food would be ready in 15 minutes. I waited 25 minutes before I went to pick up my food. When I got there...I was told it wasn't ready. I wait 5 minutes and then I'm told my order was given to some else! I was aked if I wanted to wait. I wasnt even offered an apology. Extremely disappointed and annoyed.

Yelp
I ordered the eggs and chorizo for breakfast. It was a good portion with corn tortillas. My husband loved the tripe soup and seemed like lots of people in the restaurant were ordering that too! Tasty authentic Mexican food!
google avatar

Nick S.

Yelp
I went there to buy a burrito to go as I usually do and I told the man that I wanted it with just beans and rice nothing else and ordered something else to go as well. When he came back he had two cups one of beans and another of rice. I asked why he had given them to me like that when I had ordered a burrito of beans and rice he continued on to say that I never said I wanted a burrito that I wanted a side and I told him I wanted a burrito he looked annoyed and irritated and said that I ordered a side and just walked away and said he would get me the burrito. No thank you that was very disrespectful he pretty much called me a liar and didn't even want to change it for me I will never go to this place again very unprofessional and rude customer service.

Yelp
I have visited Tammy's twice and the second visit will be my last. The first time I ate at Tammy's it was over a year ago and the food was good and the fresh tortillas were excellent. The second time around did not go so well. It took an unreasonable amount of time for our food to arrive and when it did our sons plate was not brought out. After getting the waiters attention and asking where the missing food was, he told us that the cook had burnt the order and that it would be another 10 minutes. We told him to cancel the order, and the waiter offered to bring him rice and beans. We agreed after expressing our disappointment. When we finally received out bill, they still charged us for the kids meal. When we questioned the waiter about it, he stated that he had asked the manager if he could take it off the bill and the manager would not let him. When we asked to speak to the manager, he refused to talk with us. It is unbelievable to me that manager would refuse to speak with us to try and straighten out this simple problem. The waiter was very embarrassed and actually recommended to us that we try another mexican restaurant, and also told us that he would not be working at Tammy's much longer. Yakima has a abundance of mexican restaurants. Tammy's has good food (not great), but their customer service is absolutely terrible! I do not recommend Tammy's for anybody.

Yelp
I was thinking twice before walking into this place after horrible reviews, IM GLAD I WENT IN...My menudo small size was so tasty, delicious, and met my menudo standards. They bring out the best homemade flour size corn tortillas (soo good). My young waitress was nice, efficient, and friendly (good luck in the Marine Corp). I can't speak for any other foods but give them a chance. Go to spot for MENUDO.

Marcus M.

Yelp
For starters I'm latin; I know Mexican food. Furthermore, I live in Austin, TX., just 225 miles from the closest Mexican city (Piedras Negras),.....you can't get any more Mexican than that, unless you live there. I read Richards (from Seattle's) yelp review on Tammy's Mexican Restaurant. Sorry Rich, but you'll have to travel south,....much further south to experience quality Mexican food. Either that, or try to get out a little bit more often. I ordered the Carne Asada plate. Carne Asada, for those who do not know, is Marinated Skirt steak. The steak plate I ordered Was Not marinated at all. The meat was old, and dried out like the sole of my shoe. I can't remember last where I had such a tough piece of steak. Probably the only redeeming quality of my dinner was the sliced Avacado in my side salad, and the corn tortillas,...they were good. The price of $12 and change (for it's poor quality) was insulting as well. I find it hard to believe that this town of 71,000 tolerates what they charge, especially when 33.7% of it is hispanic. Look it up. I'm adventurous, and will poke my head into any dive when I travel and sample their food. You never know, some places despite their appearance score GREAT,...others not. This one regretfully, was a full thumbs down. Tomorrow I'll be in Seattle,...now I know for certain that there's good food there. Live and learn.

Yelp
Best Mexican food in town hands down. We regularly go at least 6 times a month mostly weekends. Menudo is my favorite there is no comparison in the valley

Yelp
When u walk in, seat urself, or stand there looking stupid till someone decides to talk to u. Menus r in Spanish only. Waiter takes forever getting to ur table. Or mine anyway. Hmm. No chips and salsa to start things off and I found out they don't have them at all. Not even when u ask. Thirty minutes to get my diet coke. At 35 min the waiter explained at usually takes only 10 min for food but they had a huge order to go. Guess that threw them off. At 45 minutes I got an empty plate for the meal I'm sharing. Over 50 minutes to get the food. I got the fajitas with chicken, shrimp and beef. The shells were still on the shrimp, tough beef, no sizzling pan, hell food was barely warm. And the meat and veggies were swimming in grease. I am a bit queezey from the whole thing. THE ONLY GOOD THING ABOUT THIS PLACE WAS THE HOME MADE CORN TORTILLAS.
google avatar

Dan Y.

Yelp
If you are looking for Tex-mex then this is not the place for. No chips & salsa. My chicken fajitas were really good. My co-workers grilled chicken looked like it had been hit with a steam roller & was overcooked. My corn tortillas were the real deal. I'd give it another try.

Yelp
Sit down to eat take out takes longer. Food is good maybe one of the best Mexican spots in Yakima but don't go on sunday way too many people.

Richard T.

Yelp
The food here was amazing and the service friendly and fun. We tried the new healthy additions to the menu as a starter, one of the fresh ground juices that was made with beetroot, carrots, apple etc. Tasted great! Then onto more traditional fair, shrimp fajitas with home made four tortillas. All of the ingredients tasted so fresh, it was terrific. Mike tried the seafood stew, made with six different kinds of seafood, again fantastic. Tammy the owner and her family were so warm and welcoming. I know where I am eating next time I am in Yakima!

Dave B.

Yelp
Our experience was excellent. We don't eat Mexican food frequently, but stopped by with friends after hearing about Tammy's earlier in the day from a California couple that eats lots of Mexican. We found lot's of interesting and unusual things on the menu. The server patiently responded to our questions, made suggestions, and the food arrived promptly and was delicious. One surprise was the cantelope juice, apparently made on site, and very good.
