All the New Restaurant Openings in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Opened July 8 in the former Viking Bar space in Cedar Riverside, Tamu Grill and Catering is a Kenyan fusion restaurant run by George Ndege (Chef Jojo) and his family; the spot evolved from a catering company into a full restaurant serving curries, samosas, seasoned fries, greens, and several vegan options, with the team notable for making spices in-house." - Justine Jones

The restaurant offers an incredible and authentic taste of Kenya right here in Minneapolis. I was thoroughly impressed by the traditional street food and drink offerings. The authenticity and quality of the dishes were outstanding, but the real star of the show was the sauce. It was perfectly balanced, flavorful, and elevated every bite. If you are looking for genuine, mouth-watering Kenyan cuisine, you absolutely must visit this place!

The food is perfect 👌. To top it all, the east/particularly kenyan cuisine 🇰🇪 . It was delicious to have sausages 😋. The only downside during this winter is parking.

The vegetarian samosas were bland, even for Minnesotas. The "spicy" sauce did not compliment the item. French fries had no seasoning, were limp, and barely warm so lots of ketchup was necessary! One of my companions had the beef sausage which they described as dry and "nothing special."

Low key eatery, and nice atmosphere to chill with small group of friends. Slower than usual food service, plan an hour to wait and at least, even while seated. Clean bathrooms. Has a small TV on upper wall playing some nice low volume African music. Sweet cinnamon tea is too sweet and hurts my stomach even after a small sip, don’t recommend it, it’s premade and not made fresh- too much sugar in it. Food is average, nothing competitive or super appealing. Kenyan food is fusion, so it’s not really as authentic as we’d hope. Dish menu claims to have rice, but rice was not served. Don’t plan on coming back unless I need a low key place to chill and not be bothered. But the seating is limited, and the architecture of the layout wasn’t very well thought out. Chairs are comfortable and a lot of open space. Not cramped at all. But, the task urgency of this place is very lacking. I would recommend this restaurant get an expert business consultant to remain profitable- I see tough times for this business ahead. Food and task management is not competitive at all. There are much better places for African food with much lower prices just a few blocks away. I like the effort, but just not a place that has the ability to truly standout. Seasoned fries also, are not tasty at all- the taste combination is not appetizing or appealing. Food came out lukewarm, like it was sitting out for a while. We didn’t bother taking any left overs, just not enough uniqueness or style. Don’t recommend eating here unless your taste pallet cannot distinguish authentic cuisine.

The food is of Kenyan origin and the restaurant offers a Kenyan fusion kind of experience. In terms of service, for smaller orders, they come out quickly with beef samosas as part of my favorite side. Bigger meals can range from 10 to 15 minutes, sometimes twenty and this depends on the type of food ordered and the flow of other clients in the restaurant. They also make food from scratch and this allows customers to get the freshest meals while exploring the Kenyan fusion. In terms of atmosphere, the place is loaded with African music and Afrobeats is always playing on the background. Might not be child friendly but you can always ask the waiter to change the music if you are eating with children. Great place! Look out for Tilapia, coconut curry beans and chapati, Chicken curry rice and Goat soup (hangover soup only on Sundays

Everything was so good and flavorful! First time eating here and ordered the beef curry, chapati and cabbage, jollof rice, and chips marsala + veggie samosas. I would recommend everything and want to try the beef samosas when I go back!

TAMU Grill has incredible Kenyan infused food. I ordered the chips masala with Kenyan sausage. The sausage was great and it paired well with the chips masala (smothered fries). I also ordered the chicken curry with chapati. The chicken was juicy and the chapati was soft, a fantastic combination! The goat curry and rice was well received by the rest of my family. TAMU Grill is the hidden gem of Cedar/Riverside!

Google
Super delicious and comforting. I got the vegan chips masala & samosa meal. I think you can tell the quality of a restaurant by their samosas & these are well seasoned, soft & flaky, but still crispy on the outside. Worth checking out!

Yelp
Work catered- Very delicious, everything was packed with flavor! my favorite is the samosas, smooth texture and it's actually my first time having it, the unique of the veggies. Rice, chicken curry and bean curry was all packed with spices! every one had its own taste, and i has to definitely drizzle that chicken curry on top to make it top notch

Yelp
WOWZA, this brand new Kenyan restaurant in the Cedar Riverside area is absolutely AMAZING! To start out, they are completely dairy and nut free, which is great for anyone with intolerances to those. Their menu is pretty big, we tried quite a few different items that were all good. The curries were really good (we had the beef and the chicken curries), with the chapati and cabbage side dishes both especially yummy. The french fries with curry on top were also really unique and good too. We got takeout, and ordering over the phone was easy, with the food ready when promised. We will definitely be back to Tamu again!

Yelp
Three stars is not a bad review in my book. It means a place is perfectly fine. Kilimanjaro is a Kenyan spot in Cedar-Riverside that offers labeled vegan options. The veggie samosa ($5) was oily and bland. I didn't like the mushy interior, either. The coconut curry beans ($13) was interesting, and hearty, though a teensy bit sweet, which I didn't love. That said, it comes together with the nicely-done chapati that comes with it. The jollof rice ($7.50) is vegan by default but honestly didn't look or taste different than Spanish rice you can make from a box. I thought it was fine, but nothing amazing. Lastly, the jojo seasoned fries ($5) were really tasty. Stop by Kilimanjaro for a taste of Africa that's different from the more common Ethiopian and Somali spots throughout the Twin Cities.

Yelp
Unexpected Gem! Friend and I ended up there unplanned (place we we're going to was unexpectedly closed). I ordered the talapia dinner... reasonably priced, big portions, and SOOO GOOD! A bonus, the staff was wonderful!

Yelp
Food has an amazing taste if you're familiar with it. If it's your first time trying the East African foods, TAMU is a nice option to try out. Overall service was good, they have awesome containers to carry food or store your food. Note: Never faced a delay with them. The place looks nice and clean the owners are very welcoming. They do have some East African music playing on the background which is really cool.

Yelp
I placed a catering order for my students for the last day of classes. I ordered large trays of beef sambusas, veggie sambusas, and fried plantains. It arrived hot and on time, and my students absolutely loved it! Thank you, Tamu Grill!!!

Yelp
I placed a catering order for a small dinner of 15 people and it was a BIG HIT. We had Jollof Rice, Curried Beans, Greens, Plantains, and Chicken Curry. This was an really wonderful and satisfying gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian feast and the Chicken Curry was a big hit. The flavors are excellent (I'd be down with some hot sauce, but the Minnesota Milds were very happy) and it just feels good to eat this food. I suspect there's a heavy dose of love that goes into it. Chef Jojo and his fam are WONDERFUL. Don't miss their Afrobeats Dance Parties at the Cedar Cultural Center, they're the best.

Yelp
First of all, service took forever. Then when the food finally arrived there was not taste or flavor in anything. The only thing that remotely had a taste was the hot sauce you get on the side. This restaurant needs new chefs
