The Best Poke in Honolulu: 11 Restaurants to Hit | Eater

"Beer and poke go together like ‘ahi and shoyu, so a poke counter inside a liquor store just makes sense. The counter sells a mix of poke made with fresh and previously frozen ‘ahi, each clearly labeled. The multitudinous trays are proof that you can apply poke seasonings to practically anything: mussels, shell-on clams, crawfish, squid strips (aka imitation abalone), pipikaula (soft-dried beef), and tofu. In crab poke choices alone, Tamura’s offers everything from imitation crab to Dungeness crab (still in its shell), and has become notorious for what might be the most expensive poke ever, at more than $35 a pound, made with king crab liberated from its shell." - Martha Cheng

The Poke bowl was amazing. The fish was so fresh and well seasoned. A great value, too! They have many options to choose from.

We visited this restaurant after multiple recommendations. We opted for the 2 Ahi Combo, priced at $20.99. We sampled the Tamura, Sunrise, Ninja, and Spicy Ahi dishes. The flavours were delectable, but the prices were slightly higher than we had anticipated. Nevertheless, the Ninja Ahi dish emerged as our favourite!

Google
Very friendly, helpful service. Excellent variety. Prices are competitive with/same as Target and Safeway, but with more options, so why not support a wonderful local business instead?! Also, they have a sushi/poke counter - very fresh fish, and delicious!

Google
What else could you ask for but the best liquor and poke selection on the island, all in one place! Best selection of spirits, wines, local beers, and saki/sochu I have seen on the island in one place. There are a lot of hard to find bottles at good prices. And the poke is some of the freshest with a bunch of different varieties that I have seen as well.

Google
I've enjoy how much product they have in the store, but no one is helpful and knowledgeable about what products they carry. The poke is good, but im not there for poke, its a liquor store. Maybe the employees should actually be tested on what products they have. Do better Tamuras!

Google
I visited this place yesterday during vacations. I ordered Ahi poke and the man at the poke bar was the rudest, meanest store employee ever I have ever seen. I told him I'm not ready to order. I was trying to decide what to order with my husband, but the guy kept rushing us, decided on a menu without asking, and even interrupted our conversation. On top of that, he kept making passive-aggressive comments like, “I asked three times if you wanted the furikake,” or “I already asked several times if that’s what you wanted.” It completely ruined the experience. I forced a fake smile to get through it, but deep down I was furious. Why did I have to be treated with such disrespect? It was extremely upsetting. I’m never going back there again, and honestly, I wish I had just paid for the poke and returned it.

I love this place. Huge selection of beer, wine and spirits at reasonable prices. Plus great poke and smoked fish.

Google
This is more than a wine and liquor shop. They sell awesome poke for a very reasonable price. Located in Kaimuki with their own parking lot. Takeout only. Accepts credit cards

Yelp
Best poke by far AND great price! We both got two choices poke bowl. You can beat the flavors and the $14.99 price. They give you a lot of rice and plenty of furikake. They have a large selection of liquor and a nice section of cold ones you can grab and go with. Everyone working was friendly. Parking is the only thing less than ideal, just a small lot and some of the spots are very tiny.

Yelp
Favorite place to pickup some of the tastiest poké on the island. There is always a huge and fresh selection to choose from! Have been traveling outside of Hawaii and needed a stop here almost as soon as I touched down. And then I got a little confused at all the choices. Lol. So, got a little of all my favorites! Top choices for me include: the scallop wasabi mayo poke, all of the (fresh fresh) ahi variations, crayfish, tofu, tako... you get the picture... so much to choose from! Heard a catchy phrase this past weekend while sampling coffee and it's certainly true here... "whatever your favorite is... that is the correct answer! There are no wrong answers." While there had to get some seasoned edamame and a little bit of that awesome pipikaula inside of the same showcase. Also picked up some delicious cheese. Looked for the truffle butter usually close by the cheese. Have been known to throw in a few bottles of craft beer, or sake, or wine. Yep, you get the picture. So much goodness within these walls! Located in the heart of Kaimuki on Waialae Avenue. Easy access from Waialae !

Yelp
I finally got to try Tamura's poke for the first time after hearing all the recommendations. Called them an hour before they closed and luckily they had just enough for a bowl for my friend and I. Their poke bowls are HUGE compared to Foodland and the other places I been too. It's definitely a bang for your buck-- I paid $14.99 for 2 choices of ahi and 2 scoops of rice, which is unheard of at other places. The ahi quality and sauces were great! I would definitely come again, it's now on my top poke places!

Yelp
I'm updating my last review because it turns out it was an honest mistake and I was overcharged for 2 poke bowls. After reading my review on here, Ty the manager reached out and apologized and made it right with a refund for the overage and a gift card for the trouble. Turns out they had a new employer who was still learning. I appreciate the integrity here. I wasn't likely to go back if I thought they had the most expensive poke bowls in the 808 but they're not too shabby for $15 each! They do have the best wine selection on island IMO.
google avatar

Yelp
I would never know of this poke spot if a friend recommended this to me. No one would expect a poke place being located in a liquor store. I got the spicy mayo & Tamura's special ahi tuna bowl, it was freshly made and tasted amazing. They made sure to give an ample amount of furikake seasoning on the rice. The service is as fast as you expect a local butcher shop to make your bowl. You pay for the bowl in the front cash register, so don't forget to get a drink with your order. I would totally recommend giving this place a try! I will be back to try their dried ahi, smoked marlin, and their many sides.

Yelp
Gosh, you would not think one of the best places to get poke be located inside a liquor store. But it is! The poke here is so fresh and beautifully seasoned. It's not too salty nor drowned in sauce. I came early so not all the variations were available yet. You have an option to select poke that used fresh fish or previously frozen but still fresh fish. Personally, I don't really taste a difference. To me, poke made with previously frozen fresh fish yields slightly firmer fish cubes but that's about it. Considering that you will save almost 50% on the price with no major noticeable difference in taste, I think you cannot go wrong with the previously frozen fish poke. Tamura's is a must visit if you are doing an island poke pilgrimage. Ah, but no samples here though.

Yelp
Had two friends recommend me to stop by this store for poke and I trust their judgement. 6/28 visit: had a friend who wanted me to get him some alcohol during my stay in Hawaii. Me and my bf were in the area so we dillydallied our way into Tamuras. The older gentleman at the front serviced us when I asked to find two specific bottles of liquor. He was so pleasant to talk to; incredibly nice and gave us recommendations to do during our vacation. He was also the third vote to get their poke so we were more than willing to come back. 6/30 visit: we came back for their poke and the service was pretty so-so. The man behind the counter seemed overwhelmed and prob had a long day since he sounded annoyed when I had a question and what I wanted to order. The poke was delicious though.

Yelp
Tamura's is a very popular locals spot for fresh poke and liquor of choice. IYKYK ;) One of the freshest poke selection here. We love to take family/friends visiting and surprise them with fresh poke from what looks like a random liquor store. Haha. I do recommend skipping the rice here. I got a side of rice with poke and it was terribly dry. It's okay, I came here for poke anyway. Awesome selection of local beers, ciders, and variety of liquor and wine for your needs. They have some sales that make it cheaper too. Can be busy. Parking available. Really friendly service here.
google avatar

Yelp
Tamura's offers a wide range of spirits that interests me including wine, bourbon, sake, shochu and beer. Add to that their excellent poke counter and chiller with all sorts of gourmet goodies. I've been patronizing this location ever since they opened as it's located a very short block from my in-law's house. I would stroll my infant and first born grandson around the neighborhood and end up at Tamura's to pickup poke, boiled peanuts and their fried tofu with sea asparagus poke. In case I was lacking an adult beverage I could spend a lot of time in air conditioned comfort perusing the aisles. Great consumable products sold at fair prices with great service draws me back time and time again. I forget to Yelp my visits but Tamura's doesn't lack for great reviews. Buy and support local!

Yelp
The service here is always top notch whether you're here for the poke or the alcohol. They gave us recommendation on what to order and what size container should we get based off of our group size. My favorite was the Tamura sauce and the island ahi sunrise. The nori on top of spicy ahi for the sunrise was SO GOOD! They also have a great selection of drinks from beer, wine, sake, to tequila and whiskey. It's our favorite one stop shop before heading to our friends place!

Yelp
Tamura's Poke was enticingly good!!! One of my top 3 fav in Oahu. Fresh & greatly mixed with all the right sauces, I love how authentic & enjoyable poke is in Hawaii. Lol the price was decent & served Good portions! This place also had a ton of other great liquor/alcohol options & other miscellaneous food/drink items. I would definitely recommend their poke here.

Kevin Y.

Yelp
Absolutely da best place to by liquor! I buy beer, wine, hard liquor n sake from Tamara's cuz it's like everything is on sale price EVERYDAY! N a plus too is dat it's 2 blocks away from my house! Especially luv their extensive wine section w all da wine ratings which makes it a lot easier to pair my wines w da food I'm eating dat nite.
google avatar

Nhi T.

Yelp
Rating is just for the poke itself. I came here after hiking Diamond Head @~6PM, because my cousin was raving about the sunrise/sunset poke(I forget what's it called, but it ran out anyway so I didn't get to try..) Since I was here already, tried the poke bowl with spicy / shoyu ahi.. The spicy mayo ahi had wayyy too much sauce, it was not good. The rice was dry and hard, it was also not good. Very difficult to eat /swallow, so i ended up not eating it. Inedible, all that furikake on top did not save it from tasting any better. I ended up texting my cousin that this was not good, she said maybe you went on an off day.. Are off days suppose to hinder quality? It shouldn't.. If you have a good experience here, I am glad, but this experience was too poor for me. They do have a decent selection of beers.

Yelp
Tamura's feels like one of those iykyk places, and if you're not looking to overpay for an abundance of rice you don't eat, it's perfect to buy exactly what/how much you want. Our choices near closing time were limited, but we went with the recommended Spicy King Crab (much better than expected bc it was nicely creamy without the mayo flavor and crab shined through), along with the last of the Ginger Wasabi Ahi and a couple sides. I was curious about the ginger bc I don't often see it in poke, but it's now one of my favorites, and if you're not a fan of wasabi, you hardly taste it in this combo. Sides are ok, not remarkable (go for the poke!)
google avatar

Mikey H.

Yelp
I have often seen ads for Tamura's and they always seem to be a hit with Honolulu magazine readers. I needed to bring wine to a party and if I was going to choose a wine, I wanted to go to mecca! There's a nice parking lot in front, but I was getting a haircut close by and parked on the street. Lots of people getting ready for the New Year. They have a really nice selection of wines, and great price points! Found a really great Malbec, and it was a hit at the party with the wine peeps. Definitely worth checking out. I also heard that their deli is amazing! So I guess another visit is in the future! Mahalo Tamura!

Yelp
One of my friends who frequently visits Oahu recommended this place spot for poke, so we decided to drop by while in Honolulu. I purchased a 1/4 lb of the ahi jalapeno and it was probably my favorite flavor for poke that I had all week. I tend to prefer poke sauces that are slightly sweet and this one had the perfect amount. As far as pricing, Tamura's is $25.99/lb so not as cheap as Foodland but cheaper than places like Ono Seafood. It's the Goldilocks of poke pricing in my opinion. The next time I visit Oahu, I'll definitely be coming to Tamura's again. It's an unassuming spot for poke (since it's a wine and liquor store) but the flavors and quality of the fish are solid.
google avatar

Bryan G.

Yelp
Excellent customer service Asked for a brand mgr helped. Anything from a class liquor supplier.
google avatar

Matthew B.

Yelp
Fresh poke and beer is here! They got a large liquor and wine selection as well. Definitely found some beers you can't find at Foodland. Parking can be a little tricky but at least they got a private parking lot. Friendly staff. I'll be back as soon as I return to Hawaii. I'm a fan.
google avatar

Alexis P.

Yelp
Great poke selection and very delicious! Staff was friendly and quick despite the long line. Prices are good (fresh ahi MP was $19.99/lb today) and the portions for the bowls are good too! I liked the #3 although the Kalua pork was a little dry. The shoyu ahi and Tamura's sauce ahi are both delicious. Overall, I'd come back!

Guess W.

Yelp
I go here for the poke and some good sake selections. Cant go wrong with the Tamara special and the hawaiian poke. I like to mix both so i can get the seaweed crunch in every bite. Great thing is they make the poke fresh every morning!
google avatar

Stacey K.

Yelp
Hands down my favorite poke in Oahu. If you haven't tried the ahi and tako in Tamura's sauce... you are missing out! I love to bring this back home whenever I visit the island, and it's always nice savoring some Hawaiian flavors back home. The ahi is always so so fresh, love the texture, and the flavor is the perfect balance of sweet and salty. They also sell delicious gummy candy here-- come take a look if you enjoy lemon peel gummies. If you like furikake chips, they have some awesome options here, yum!!
google avatar

Yelp
Well same last name but not related lol . Unfortunately I'm the poor Tamura . Passed by this particular Tamura's fine wine many time and I believe I've been into this store but I guess I forgot to Yelp them . Located at the corner of 10th Ave and Waialae Ave ample parking available and nice selection of Poke . All kinds of wine and fine liquor available plus some snack like chips and candies. Their original store was actually in Waianae than the 2nd store followed in Wahiawa. Than they opened all kinds of location Tamura's fine wine & liquor. If your looking for good quality fresh poke and good liquor or beer that goes well with Poke . Stop into a Tamura's fine wine & liquor store . Support local

Yelp
Was really surprised that everyone was raving about poke at the back of a liquor shop so had to check it out! We got there around 2:30pm on a weekday and they were almost sold out. We managed to get the garlic cream poke and the shoyu tuna poke. The fish was really soft and almost melt in your mouth. The seasoning was super flavorful too. Bought a bottle of wine to pair and can't complain!
google avatar

Raylene M.

Yelp
One local place to get good food! it's such a nice place to grab a meal before heading to the beach. The staff was helpful, the only thing I wish is that you can do 1/2 and 1/2 of poke so I can taste them. I also wish the fish was cut up into smaller pieces. Overall good place!
google avatar

Courtney O.

Yelp
I have always driven by this Tamura's but never realized they have a huge selection of poke inside until I ate a selection at a friend's house. It was so good, I drove over the next day to get some for myself. They have all sorts of varieties. I especially loved the spicy ahi and the hamachi poke. Super good, fresh fish with plenty flavor. Easy to get to in Kaimuki with its own parking lot.
google avatar

Mena P.

Yelp
High quality poke at a liquor store? Who would have thought?! I came to Oahu during Memorial Day weekend and a few of the better known poke spots were closed. I happened to come across Tamura's and I'm so glad I did!! They had a good amount of poke options and all of the ones I got were really good. Solid chunks of melt-in-your mouth ahi. I enjoyed all the flavors I got. I also bought a bag of tortilla chips to have with the poke- it's a must. Final thoughts: the poke here was very delicious, the prices were decent, and I would definitely come here again.
google avatar

Elaine L.

Yelp
Hands down, the best hamachi poke on island! The quality of the hamachi is always excellent. The shoyu flavor is bland in my opinion but the inamona flavor is top tier!
google avatar

Lynn N.

Yelp
I love this place because it's the only place that has Orions that I know of in island that's close to me. I like that they have a huge selection of all different types of alcohols because we sometimes like to make our own drinks at home and they sell everything that we need here. They also have little snacks available as well and they have all of the Asia-imported alcohols that we like available for purchase unlike other local grocery stores.
google avatar

Myning C.

Yelp
Service was friendly at the cashier- Poke bowl was good but rice was not cooked thoroughly- so that was not good and i found the spicy ahi to be too salty - the limu ahi was tasty tho
google avatar

Landon K.

Yelp
Great selection of wines, spirits, whisky's and miscellaneous beverages. Prices are reasonable and staff is always helpful. Whenever I'm in a pinch and need to bring over things for a get together or outing, this spot usually never fails.
google avatar

Pabs G.

Yelp
Fabulous place for a wide selection of alcohol, but I go for their poke bowls. This combo of spicy tuna and Tamura's special was perfect. Fish was fresh and mild in taste. Sometimes the simple ingredients are best. Rice was good; not soggy. Furikake is always good in a poke bowl. Nice size serving for $14.99. Couldn't consume it all in one sitting, so I saved the rest as a pre-dinner appetizer.
google avatar

Diana M.

Yelp
Tamura's Fine Wine and Liquor is my go-to place for poke and poke bowls. They offer the freshest and most unique options to choose from. The portion sizes are nothing short of generous. A poke bowl here will not only satisfy your cravings but also leave you feeling fully satisfied. And at a reasonable price point of just $15.00 per bowl, it truly hits that spot of value for money. Aside from the poke, Tamura's carries a range of fine wines and liquors. Their staff is knowledgeable and always on hand to offer their assistance. Make it a point to stop by and treat yourself to the best poke bowls in town!
google avatar

RJ S.

Yelp
Fresh poke at a reasonable price! While visiting Honolulu, my wife and I came here to get lunch after receiving a recommendation from a friend who grew up in the area. As we'd been told, Tamara's has a wide selection of fresh poke available daily and a lot of the locals come here to pickup a quick lunch. After browsing for a bit, we ordered several varieties, steamed rice and some kimchi cucumbers, then drove down the road to eat in a neighborhood park. It was a great break from the busy waterfront dining scene. The fish was fresh, although the marinades were a little too spicy for my taste. I recommend coming here if you want to experience something new and get a good meal, but set your expectations accordingly. As an added bonus, they also sell a small selection of food, groceries, beer, wine and liquor.
google avatar

Hanh H.

Yelp
Love the poke counter and the people working behind it. During our visit to Hawaii, we stopped by twice. Take (octopus) and all is that good with rice and the copious amounts of various alcohol or non-alcohol beverages. If I were able to try everything behind the poke counter, I certainly would. It's hard to decide what when your eyes are become googaly eyed for everything. Who can resist fresh poke like this?
google avatar

Jarod H.

Yelp
Five stars. Highly recommended. I come here for the poke bowls. I like the poke here, as it is always fresh (even the previously frozen ones). The quality and taste is most excellent and ono! I like the variety of poke "flavors" and styles that are available. The rice is good stuff and hot. Add on the furikake for a better flare. The price of the poke bowl is competitive to other places, which is alright with me. Add on a soda and all pau! Hahaha! All in all, go to Tamura's for a good poke bowl.
google avatar

Janice P.

Yelp
We came by to buy a few items and try out some poke. Their poke was bomb!! It was so delicious that we came by again to buy more poke to takr back to our hotel. The fish was so fresh and it just melts in your mouth!!
google avatar

Woo K.

Yelp
Honestly if you think it is weird getting poke at a liquor store, that's what I thought! Seems to be a norm in Hawaii. But this place surprisingly had loads of flavors and options. And was actually good!!!
google avatar

Rebecca W.

Yelp
Absolutely did not expect this unassuming liquor store to have INCREDIBLE poke, but boyyyyyy come to Tamura's for poke as convenient as Times, but way more options and WAY better quality!! The biggest difference between Tamura's and any other grocery store selling poke is that they differentiate fresh poke from previously frozen. It's really nice that they list different prices for both too! The transparency here really does it for me. I got a serving of ahi from the fresh section (the furikake island fresh sunrise), and the hamachi from the previously frozen. The Sunrise ahi was INCREDIBLY. Loved the chunks of avocado, which were a delightful surprise! The heavy coating of furikake was amazing as well, and I love that they re-sprinkle it on your poke, before giving the portion to you. The hamachi was still very flavorful despite being previously frozen. It was on the more solid side, but still retained a lot of its freshness. I probably should have let it sit out for a few more minutes, but it tasted fine! Since I literally live like 5 min away from here, I definitely will be back!
google avatar

Wakaba S.

Yelp
I come here once in a blue moon but they have good selections of wines. Never tried poke here so would like to try next time.

Yelp
My friend recommended Tamura's to me, and I was intrigued by this poke counter located at the back of a liquor store. While waiting on line I was so eager to look at the options that I leaned too close to other customers and was scolded. My bad, but I'm glad they took their social distancing regulations very seriously. I went for the island fresh ahi with spicy shoyu and Tamura's special tako poke, picking the latter because if it's almost gone, that means it has to be amazing, right? The answer is hell yes, because damn, their Tamura sauce was sooo good. If you see any poke left with that sauce, GET. IT. As for the spicy ahi... whewww was it fire, but I enjoyed it nevertheless. The fish was so fresh and perfectly marinated, which I came to find was a given for poke here (and god do I love and miss it). They also sold whole containers of pickled garlic that piqued my interest. I wish I'd gotten one. There's nowhere inside to sit down and eat, but there's a park diagonally across the street with a couple of tables and benches.
google avatar

Cheryl E.

Yelp
Now the price tag on a pound of their king crab poke may seem a little high for some folks, but I can say it was definitely worth it. No idea what they put in there but I was addicted at first bite! The garlic king crab has definitely got to be my new go to fave! I don't even know what it is that makes me crave it, but I do. Can't wait to go back specifically just for this dish alone. Let's not skip on their poke combos though. Rice, kahlua pork, salmon lomi and your choice of ahi poke. Honestly there's no better combo for that price. The pork fat juiciness gives the rice and extra umph and when you pair each bite with a bit of lomi, fish, and pork- it's literally a party in your mouth 1000% recommend and I will definitely be returning!

Yelp
Great place with friends employees. 1. The seafood deli is delicious 2. They have a large selection of cigars 3. Staff was friendly, kind, and attentive

Yelp
The quest continues! Looking for good and rare bourbons brought me here, finally. Tamura's has a great reputation for one of the broadest selection of wines and spirits and the reputation is well-deserved. I found many, many bottles of bourbon and rye to choose from, from the budget Evan Willaims to several bottles in the locked case well over $100. Now, to get educated on each and see what's worth buying... At a party later in the day I was able to sample some cask-strength Makers which I thought might be harsh, but was in fact very smooth. The Makers 101 is available at Tamura's for a reasonable price. All in all a great place to find a variety of bourbons in several price ranges. I also tried their poke. The prev.-frozen poke wasn't bad, so next time I have to sample the fresh island ahi poke. Prices are average and the service is great.

Monica R.

Yelp
Poke one of everything haha 10/10 tried it the first time in Maui and came to Oahu and they did not disappoint! Best poke in town .
google avatar

Jules F.

Yelp
Great spot with a huge selection of wines, beers and alcohol. They have dry, deli, and refrigerated snack items as well with a really great poke and Kalua pork at the back. Great customer service and you can even find fresh leis here with plenty of parking in the lot or on the street. Super convenient that it's in kaimuki too so you can dodge having to go into Kahala or downtown (depending on where you are).
google avatar

Maki S.

Yelp
A friend of a friend bought a bunch of poke to a beach gathering and served it to all us. She called them samplers and OMG it was the best poke I've had, possibly ever. I could have a whole bowl of spicy octopus. Everything was so fresh. I wanted seconds but didn't want to be greedy. Someday I'll go grab some in person!
google avatar

Tom S.

Yelp
Great booze shop. Best poke' in Honolulu. Surprisingly the prices are no higher than those I pay in Northern California. Nice helpful folks.
google avatar

Roman G.

Yelp
I don't drink, I came here with a few friends because they were looking for a specific wine. The store is kept very clean and organized, the prices are reasonable, I was shocked to find that most of their products cost less than other retailers, and they have such a vast collection with ratings from wine tasters. The staff was super friendly and treated everyone with aloha. I recommend this place anyone throwing a party, they have drinks for all kinds of occasions, so glad to have discovered this place!

Yelp
COVID-era review I frequently forget this place is here even though I live in Kaimuki and drive past it constantly. It could be that the building sports a bleak, blank, white wall along an otherwise vibrant Waialae Avenue. (Can't you help them, Pow Wow Hawaii?) I somehow remember their specialty beer selection being more extensive at one time, but I will say that are carrying an impressive range of flavored vodkas at the mid- to lower price point (think Absolut, Smirnoff, etc.) If you're ever needing vanilla or blackberry or pepper vodka, this is your place. They've always sold poke and their poke bar pre-dates the recent craze. There's a great selection of poke preparations. When I was there last week, the young kids in front of me ordered two pounds of the "Tamura sauce" ahi poke -- which I then needed to order too lol. I didn't bother to ask what it was and we couldn't figure out the flavor when I got home. I still have no idea what we were eating -- maybe a teri sauce? It was definitely on the sweet side and I probably won't get it again. The spicy ahi poke was a better bet. We're spice wimps and it was a little warm for us (duh, it's "spicy" ahi) but the fish was fresh, the sesame and sriracha flavors were on point. The poke are also labeled "previously frozen" or not. Kudos for the truth in advertising!
