Yelp
Tan-Cha straddles the four-to-five star line for me. The Brown Sugar Latte with Boba that I had was outstanding. The Uji Matcha with Cheese Foam and the Super Fruit Tea were also very good. I think Tan-Cha has an edge over several of the already-good boba tea shops on Buford Highway. Currently, I'd rank them in my top tier of boba tea shops with Tea Top (my favorite) and Kung Fu Tea (a now old-school classic). I'll give Tan-Cha a "soft five" or 4.5 stars rounded up to 5. There are simply a lot of good-to-great bubble tea options in Doraville which I consider the bubble tea mecca of the Southeast.
Tan-Cha opened in September 2020 and joins Gong Cha (August 2020), Pearl's Tea (October 2020), and Cuckoo's Cafe (February 2021) as new bubble tea shops to open on Buford Highway over the last year. You can find Tan-Cha in Clover Plaza, the two-story strip across from Buford Highway Farmers Market, OTP (outside the perimeter). Since moving to Atlanta in 2000, this was my first time at Clover Plaza.
Like Ding Tea, Gong Cha, Kung Fu Tea, Quickly, Tea Top, and Yi Fang Taiwan Fruit Tea, Tan-Cha is a chain and this location is a franchise. Cuckoo's Cafe, Pearl's Tea, and Sweet Hut are chains too (and the Pearl's Tea on BuHi is a franchise), but they're smaller and those brands started in the metro Atlanta area as opposed to outside Georgia or the US. As I've said in my reviews for some other bubble tea shops, the bubble tea competition in Atlanta is stiff. On Buford Highway in particular, I think you have to be at least a "four-star" bubble tea shop to have a chance at long-term survival. It's tough, but I digress.
What makes Tan-Cha good? The quality. If they can keep it up, I think they'll do fine. Quality is the reason why Tea Top and Kung Fu Tea are still among my top-recommended - they've been able to maintain high quality drinks while others have fallen or the competition around them has gotten better. As far as product, Tan-Cha has some products that are different from the rest: Tiramisu Foam drinks, Frothy Matcha Foam drinks, and drinks like Cocoa with Cheese & Oreo and Brulee Thai Milk Tea with Boba. I also think it's interesting how Tan-Cha does *not* have grass jelly, one of my favorite tea toppings.
During my visit, Tan-Cha had 35 drinks on the menu, all one size only. The size wasn't listed anywhere so I asked. The manager, Mike T, told me that all of Tan-Cha's cups, foam or no foam, hold 22 ounces. Foam drinks are served in smaller-looking cups with snap-shut lids as opposed to the standard boba tea cups with sealed plastic film on top. If you get a drink with foam, you get about 17 ounces of liquid. Drinks start at $4-6 each with toppings $0.75 each, though some drinks like my Brown Sugar Latte with Boba, come and are priced with boba. There were seven topping choices.
I ordered a variety to get a feel for what Tan-Cha has to offer. My Brown Sugar Latte with Boba, Uji Matcha with Cheese Foam, and Super Fruit Tea were all priced the same at $5.75 each. I absolutely loved the Brown Sugar Latte with Boba. I'm also a fan of sweet and creamy drinks. Like other bubble tea shops, Tan-Cha uses the word "latte" loosely as there was no actual espresso nor steamed milk in my drink. Instead, it was caramelized brown sugar, boba (tapioca pearls), and whole milk. I like brown sugar boba drinks in general and this was one of my favorites anywhere so far. It reminded me of one of my favorite drinks at Kung Fu Tea, Wow Milk (Lactaid), but Tan Cha's Brown Sugar Latte with Boba was even sweeter. As for the boba, it was top-notch: fresh with perfect texture and flavor (sweet).
While I like sweet, I don't like super sweet, so I ordered all my drinks with "less sugar." I also ordered them all with "less ice." The Brown Sugar Latte with Boba was still plenty sweet at that level. In comparison, both the Uji Matcha with Cheese Foam and the Super Fruit Tea were noticeably dialed back.
Something unique that Tan-Cha does is offer miniature plastic shovels which you can use to scoop the foam on the top of the foam drinks. I thought it looked gimmicky at first (and maybe it still is), but it's actually both cute and functional. The Cheese Foam on my Uji Matcha was delicious and it was way easier to scoop it into my mouth than try to eat it using a straw like at Sharetea or elsewhere. With foam drinks, I prefer to sample the foam first, then mix it in to create a creamier, saltier, and overall richer beverage. That's what I did here and it was quite yummy. The lady at the register told me that the Tiramisu Foam was sweeter and saltier while the Cheese Foam had a more "cheesy" flavor. The latter certainly does, but I've also always found cheese foam, including this one, to be salty too (in a good way).
My Super Fruit Tea contained watermelon, strawberry, orange, lemon, and lime. It was cold and refreshing with a good balance of both tea and fruit flavors. It stands up to some of the best fruit teas I've had (Yi Fang, Cuckoo's).
