24 Best Hotels in Bali

"It’s hard to believe the sprawling resort is only a 10-minute drive from increasingly tourist-clogged Ubud—once you’re there, it’s as though you’re in private a country estate miles from civilization. The hotel sits near the 9th-century Goa Gajah, or Elephant Cave; as a tribute to this sacred temple, elephant statues line the winding driveway to the open reception area. The resort occupies what was once the family home of Hendra Hadiprana, a serious art collector and one of Indonesia’s preeminent architects. The resort boasts clear influences from its past life, starting with elaborate sculptures in the lobby. A big pond and a long, green-tiled pool (neatly flanked by a phalanx of sun loungers and parasols) nod to Balinese water palaces. The thatched open-air dining pavilion, which overlooks the paddy fields where the menu's rice is harvested, works for low-key lunches and special-occasion dinners alike. The resort's interpretation of Indonesian Rijsttafel, nine rice dishes with spicy sambals, is particularly great. We also loved lounging on triangular cushions and picnicking at the edge of the property's dazzling green-grass field." - Chris Schalkx, Juliet Kinsman

Tanah Gajah, a Resort by Hadiprana

"Take us there. What's the place like? What stands out as you arrive, either on the hotel grounds or in the surrounding area on approach? It’s hard to believe the sprawling resort is only a 10-minute drive from increasingly tourist-clogged Ubud—once you’re there, it’s as though you’re in private a country estate miles from civilization. The hotel sits near the 9th-century Goa Gajah, or Elephant Cave; as a tribute to this sacred temple, elephant statues line the winding driveway to the open reception area. Lovely. So what's the story behind the Chedi Club?Once the family home of Hendra Hadiprana, a serious art collector and one of Indonesia’s preeminent architects, The resort boasts clear influences from its past life, starting with elaborate sculptures in the lobby. A big pond and a long, green-tiled pool (neatly flanked by a phalanx of sun loungers and parasols) nod to Balinese water palaces. What are the rooms like? Any standout accommodations? There are seven suites and 13 villas. The stand-alone villas aren't enormous, but they're thoughtfully appointed with everything you could need, including minibars where much is free. The Pool Villas have their own plunge pools, some of which open out onto the paddy fields. They're as suited to honeymoons as they are family escapes, and everyone is allocated a dedicated butler. Is the restaurant on site worth a stop, or should we look elsewhere for a pick-me-up?The thatched open-air dining pavilion, which overlooks the paddy fields where the menu's rice is harvested, works for low-key lunches and special-occasion dinners alike. The resort's interpretation of Indonesian Rijsttafel, nine rice dishes with spicy sambals, is particularly great. We also loved lounging on triangular cushions and picnicking at the edge of the property's dazzling green-grass field. How's the service?Staff is about as kind, genuine, and helpful as it gets. Deasy Swandarini is a most charming GM—warm hospitality sets the tone. And how would you describe the people who stay here?Well-to-do guests who don't like to show off. Any other amenities on site we should take note of?In addition to the onsite restaurant and bar, there's also private dining and room service. Wellness facilities include a gym, a spa, and tennis courts. There isn't a kids club per se, but you can hire babysitters. And on Tuesday and Friday evenings, the hotel hosts a Royal Balinese Dinner, where local villagers perform Kecak, a Balinese dance. Bottom line: Why would you pick this resort? What's it best for?Come to savor a private villa and beautiful, sprawling gardens—without having to interact with many other guests." - Juliet Kinsman

Tanah Gajah, a Resort by Hadiprana (Ubud, Bali) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Inland Bali is for escaping the crowds, and surrounded by sprawling gardens and a vast expanse of rice fields, Tanah Gajah, a Resort by Hadiprana certainly qualifies as an escape. Here, a mile or two outside of Ubud, you’re never far from civilization, but from within the confines of the estate the rest of the world might as well not exist at all." - Tablet Hotels

We stayed at this beautiful hotel for two nights and three days during our honeymoon in Bali, and every moment exceeded our expectations. From the very beginning, everything felt truly special. We stayed in a private pool villa, which made our stay even more memorable. The thoughtful surprises—a chocolate crepe cake and a beautifully prepared flower bath—completely amazed us and made us feel genuinely welcomed and celebrated. Although the hotel was originally built in 1989, it was impeccably clean and wonderfully maintained. The antique charm blended perfectly with elegance, making every corner of the hotel visually stunning and full of character. Enjoying afternoon tea, cocktails, and breakfast while surrounded by the serene nature of Ubud was an unforgettable experience. The peaceful atmosphere and breathtaking views created moments we will cherish forever. My husband and I promised each other that we would definitely return for a future visit, perhaps as a reminder wedding trip. Finally, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Nick and all the staff members for their exceptional hospitality and warm kindness. This hotel made our honeymoon truly perfect, and we couldn’t have asked for a better stay.

We had a truly wonderful stay at the resort. The service was excellent, and every single staff member was courteous, warm, and welcoming. The serenity of the place made the entire experience even more relaxing and special. A special thank you to the chef, who personally came to assist me with my dietary restrictions and made sure I was served food of my choice. That level of care really stood out. A big shout-out to Dave, the yoga instructor, who ensured we did the right kind of stretches and made the sessions both relaxing and enjoyable. Nopi in the restaurant was very attentive and always smiling, and she went out of her way to help us with our requests. Each and every staff member deserves praise. Kudos to the entire Tanah Gajah team for making our stay beautiful, peaceful, and memorable. The balloon ride experience was truly the icing on the cake! We will definitely be visiting again.

Our first stop for a long overdue holiday and wow! We loved staying within this beautiful resort. The grounds feel as though you're set within a private estate, the villas are spaced a part giving you freedom and privacy. The staff are incredible, from the moment we arrived till we left, the WhatsApp communication is superior. There is always room for improvement but overall we had a wonderful stay and would visit again. Thank you to the wonderful people at Tanah Gajah

We stayed at Tanah Gajah Resort in Ubud for five nights, and it truly exceeded every expectation we had. From the moment we arrived, the staff were beyond attentive—anticipating our needs and wishes before we even voiced them. Their warmth and professionalism made us feel genuinely cared for throughout our entire stay. The resort itself is immaculate. Every corner is beautifully maintained, the grounds are serene, and the atmosphere is the perfect blend of luxury and calm. After an incredibly stressful year, we were worried that five nights wouldn’t be enough to reset… but we left feeling more relaxed than we have in a very long time. Tanah Gajah is an absolute sanctuary. We cannot recommend it highly enough.

We just had 10 nights at Tanah Gajah and we did not want to leave, we had a wonderful time. The staff are so lovely & friendly, they are very attentive and cannot do enough for you. The food was excellent and the grounds are stunning and beautifully attended to. We felt like we were in our own private oasis away from the busy town centre but only a short taxi ride to visit restaurants and sites. We stayed in one of the new pool Villas and loved it. Very spacious and comfortable with everything we needed. We will definitely return.

Tanah Gajah is a beautiful and tranquil traditional Balinese resort. The grounds are absolutely breath-taking, and the staff were kind and attentive. The welcome drink is a must, and the Nasi Goreng was one of the best we had on the trip. A truly special place to unwind and the perfect first stop of our trip.

A Truly Exceptional Stay at Tanah Gajah We recently enjoyed our first visit to Tanah Gajah in Bali, and from the moment we arrived, we knew it would be special. We were greeted with a heartfelt “welcome home,” which set the tone for an unforgettable experience. The service throughout our stay was outstanding. Every member of the team was warm, friendly, and genuinely committed to ensuring we had an exceptional time. They went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed all the perks of our package, which made us feel truly cared for. The resort itself is breathtaking. The landscaping and architecture, designed by the renowned Indonesian architect Mr. Hadiprana, are stunning. The elephant motif—fitting for a place called “Tanah Gajah,” or “land of elephants”—is woven beautifully throughout, and we kept discovering delightful details everywhere we looked. It’s incredibly Instagrammable! Our one-bedroom pool villa was perfect: spacious, private, and well-appointed, with every comfort thoughtfully provided. The outdoor bathtub was a standout feature that made the experience even more special. Dining was another highlight. The food was excellent, with a great mix of Western and Indonesian options. One evening, we enjoyed the Royal Balinese dinner accompanied by a mesmerizing kecak dance performance—a truly memorable treat. Tanah Gajah exceeded our expectations in every way. We left feeling relaxed, pampered, and already planning our return. Highly recommended!

Tanah Gajah was truly one of the most memorable places I’ve ever stayed. Set in the lush jungle of north Ubud, the grounds are incredibly spacious, peaceful, and luxurious, with a timeless authentic Balinese charm that immediately puts you at ease. Our villa was stunning, with plenty of space, elegant design, and a beautiful deep bath that quickly became one of my favourite spots to unwind. Everything felt thoughtfully curated for comfort and relaxation. There are so many amazing activities available—picnics and romantic dinners in the rice paddies, floating breakfasts, and more—but the sunrise hot air balloon ride was the true highlight. Floating gently above the rice fields while the sun rose was a magical experience. It’s a tethered ride, so it felt very safe and was a perfect balance of adventure and serenity. The staff were absolutely impeccable. From the warm welcome to every thoughtful detail throughout our stay, they made sure my family and I were perfectly looked after. I even had the pleasure of being greeted by the General Manager, which made me feel truly special and valued as a guest. My only regret is not staying longer. I’m already looking forward to the day I return to this incredible place. Highly recommended for anyone seeking luxury, culture, and peace in Ubud.
