24 Best Hotels in Bali

"It’s hard to believe the sprawling resort is only a 10-minute drive from increasingly tourist-clogged Ubud—once you’re there, it’s as though you’re in private a country estate miles from civilization. The hotel sits near the 9th-century Goa Gajah, or Elephant Cave; as a tribute to this sacred temple, elephant statues line the winding driveway to the open reception area. The resort occupies what was once the family home of Hendra Hadiprana, a serious art collector and one of Indonesia’s preeminent architects. The resort boasts clear influences from its past life, starting with elaborate sculptures in the lobby. A big pond and a long, green-tiled pool (neatly flanked by a phalanx of sun loungers and parasols) nod to Balinese water palaces. The thatched open-air dining pavilion, which overlooks the paddy fields where the menu's rice is harvested, works for low-key lunches and special-occasion dinners alike. The resort's interpretation of Indonesian Rijsttafel, nine rice dishes with spicy sambals, is particularly great. We also loved lounging on triangular cushions and picnicking at the edge of the property's dazzling green-grass field." - Chris Schalkx, Juliet Kinsman

Tanah Gajah, a Resort by Hadiprana

"Take us there. What's the place like? What stands out as you arrive, either on the hotel grounds or in the surrounding area on approach? It’s hard to believe the sprawling resort is only a 10-minute drive from increasingly tourist-clogged Ubud—once you’re there, it’s as though you’re in private a country estate miles from civilization. The hotel sits near the 9th-century Goa Gajah, or Elephant Cave; as a tribute to this sacred temple, elephant statues line the winding driveway to the open reception area. Lovely. So what's the story behind the Chedi Club?Once the family home of Hendra Hadiprana, a serious art collector and one of Indonesia’s preeminent architects, The resort boasts clear influences from its past life, starting with elaborate sculptures in the lobby. A big pond and a long, green-tiled pool (neatly flanked by a phalanx of sun loungers and parasols) nod to Balinese water palaces. What are the rooms like? Any standout accommodations? There are seven suites and 13 villas. The stand-alone villas aren't enormous, but they're thoughtfully appointed with everything you could need, including minibars where much is free. The Pool Villas have their own plunge pools, some of which open out onto the paddy fields. They're as suited to honeymoons as they are family escapes, and everyone is allocated a dedicated butler. Is the restaurant on site worth a stop, or should we look elsewhere for a pick-me-up?The thatched open-air dining pavilion, which overlooks the paddy fields where the menu's rice is harvested, works for low-key lunches and special-occasion dinners alike. The resort's interpretation of Indonesian Rijsttafel, nine rice dishes with spicy sambals, is particularly great. We also loved lounging on triangular cushions and picnicking at the edge of the property's dazzling green-grass field. How's the service?Staff is about as kind, genuine, and helpful as it gets. Deasy Swandarini is a most charming GM—warm hospitality sets the tone. And how would you describe the people who stay here?Well-to-do guests who don't like to show off. Any other amenities on site we should take note of?In addition to the onsite restaurant and bar, there's also private dining and room service. Wellness facilities include a gym, a spa, and tennis courts. There isn't a kids club per se, but you can hire babysitters. And on Tuesday and Friday evenings, the hotel hosts a Royal Balinese Dinner, where local villagers perform Kecak, a Balinese dance. Bottom line: Why would you pick this resort? What's it best for?Come to savor a private villa and beautiful, sprawling gardens—without having to interact with many other guests." - Juliet Kinsman

We were a family of 4 staying in Family Pool Villa for 4 nights as part of a multi-stop Bali/Lombok holiday. I had high expectations of Tanah Gaja and it did not disappoint in any way!||Beautiful hote and grounds, immaculately maintained, in a quiet location just outside the manic Ubud. Hotel offers free shuttles in and out of Ubud town up to 6pm - whilst close it could take 30 mins due to the incredibly bad traffic. Ubud itself was terribly busy so we were extremely pleased to be staying in the tranquil oasis of Tanah Gajah.||Great comfortable villa, one king bed, and twin beds in separate room. Decent sized private pool in a walled garden. Very private. Own butler, daily washing allowance, and grea service throughout the hotel. Daily free cocktails between 6-7pm (delicious). Breakfast included but we also had two dinners in the hotel and the food was excellent.||We did the Vintage WC tour arranged by the hotel (see their website) which was great fun. We also arranged a downhill bike ride from the Volcano back to Ubud via Tripadvisor, which was also great fun. Explored Ubud on foot making use of the free hotel transfers.||Hotel also has a large immaculate and beatiful pool. This was mostly empty, I suppose the nature of a hotel like this is people are out and about, so it never feels busy. The hotel grounds are also very large. We did the free guided walk of the local paddy fields and town, which was great and informative. ||I would highly recommend this hotel - book it and you won't be disappointed.

We had an unforgettable stay at Tanah Gajah. The staff was exceptionally friendly and attentive, meeting our every need even anticipating what we were asking. They arranged all our transportation, provided complimentary laundry service, and ensured access to wonderful amenities. Our pool villa room was stunning, offering a breathtaking view of the rice fields. My wife and I enjoyed an excellent massage at a very reasonable price. We also joined one of their excursions to explore the Ubud area, which allowed us to experience everything we wanted without the crowds. The hot air balloon ride at sunrise was a highlight, offering a spectacular view. Highly recommend!

On a scale of 10, I would happily give Tanah Gajah an 11. My wife and I had such a wonderful time here.||The grounds are beautiful, with wide open rice fields, gardens and swan ponds that make the whole place feel very serene and peaceful. Just walking around the estate was relaxing on its own.||Breakfast every morning was something to look forward to. The menu had both local and international choices, served à la carte, and everything we tried was tasty and nicely done.||We also tried the hot air balloon ride over the estate. It was a special experience, especially in the early morning when we could see Mt. Agung in the distance. Definitely a highlight of the trip.||Our room was comfortable and very well put together, with lots of little details that made it feel warm, appealing and inviting.||What stood out the most though was the service. The staff were genuinely friendly and attentive to our needs, and they made us feel welcome from start to finish.||All in all, Tanah Gajah is a place we love to come back to. We left with great memories and a wish that our stay had been longer.

Tanah Gajah was truly one of the most memorable places I’ve ever stayed. Set in the lush jungle of north Ubud, the grounds are incredibly spacious, peaceful, and luxurious, with a timeless authentic Balinese charm that immediately puts you at ease. Our villa was stunning, with plenty of space, elegant design, and a beautiful deep bath that quickly became one of my favourite spots to unwind. Everything felt thoughtfully curated for comfort and relaxation. There are so many amazing activities available—picnics and romantic dinners in the rice paddies, floating breakfasts, and more—but the sunrise hot air balloon ride was the true highlight. Floating gently above the rice fields while the sun rose was a magical experience. It’s a tethered ride, so it felt very safe and was a perfect balance of adventure and serenity. The staff were absolutely impeccable. From the warm welcome to every thoughtful detail throughout our stay, they made sure my family and I were perfectly looked after. I even had the pleasure of being greeted by the General Manager, which made me feel truly special and valued as a guest. My only regret is not staying longer. I’m already looking forward to the day I return to this incredible place. Highly recommended for anyone seeking luxury, culture, and peace in Ubud.

Staying at Tanah Gajah Ubud was such a beautiful experience. What I loved most was how peaceful it felt ...far from the traffic and noise of central Ubud, yet still close enough to enjoy everything the town has to offer||As someone who enjoys playing tennis, the tennis court here was a real highlight. It’s not only well-maintained but also set in such a calm and scenic spot. The resort even provided racquets and balls, which made it so easy to just step onto the court and play without worrying about bringing my own gear. It was such a refreshing way to spend my mornings before exploring Ubud...||The villa itself felt like my own little sanctuary, spacious and private with those calming views of rice fields right outside. And what truly made the experience unforgettable was the staff. They were warm, attentive, and genuinely kind .. at one point, I realized I had left my charger adaptor behind, and they immediately helped me with it. They always seemed intuitive in anticipating what I might need to make my stay enjoyable, which is such a rare||If you’re looking for a place in Ubud where you can escape the crowds & traffic, recharge, and enjoy little joys like a morning tennis match in the middle of nature, Tanah Gajah Ubud is truly the place to be. I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone visiting Ubud

This is indeed a wonderful place for any stay. Beautiful and quiet location very well maintained but most importantly is the care of all the staff especially your dedicated manager Pasek Budiarka. Any question or concern you might have is treated like number one priority and all efforts are made to make the customer happy. I highly recommend this great hotel for your best vacation experience. Having travelled for 35 years i must say this is the best one yet! Please try the SPA and Michelin level restaurant so uncommon for Bali.

Tanah Gajah was a perfect upmarket setting to take in Balinese hospitality, friendship and culture. Set in a huge well established sculptured lake garden and rice field property it offers high end relaxation, activities and modern inclusions in various sized traditional villas where space comfort and privacy is supplemented by full butler service. Food and beverage are high grade experiences in a variety of settings be it a Floating Breakfast, Balinese Picnic Lunch or in a Spa setting for couples. Management and staff provide very personal professional service to ensure a very engaging Balinese experience for you to enjoy and treasure.

Our stay at Tanah Gajah was a wonderful experience; it exceeded our expectations. The entire team was very attentive to our well-being, always friendly and eager to help. We were celebrating an important event, and the entire team remembered this and prepared a picnic for us. We also enjoyed the spa and the excellent restaurant overlooking the rice fields. The entire resort is spread over a very large area, so we didn't feel crowded or surrounded by other people. We will definitely want to return—we already miss it.
