24 Best Hotels in Bali

"It’s hard to believe the sprawling resort is only a 10-minute drive from increasingly tourist-clogged Ubud—once you’re there, it’s as though you’re in private a country estate miles from civilization. The hotel sits near the 9th-century Goa Gajah, or Elephant Cave; as a tribute to this sacred temple, elephant statues line the winding driveway to the open reception area. The resort occupies what was once the family home of Hendra Hadiprana, a serious art collector and one of Indonesia’s preeminent architects. The resort boasts clear influences from its past life, starting with elaborate sculptures in the lobby. A big pond and a long, green-tiled pool (neatly flanked by a phalanx of sun loungers and parasols) nod to Balinese water palaces. The thatched open-air dining pavilion, which overlooks the paddy fields where the menu's rice is harvested, works for low-key lunches and special-occasion dinners alike. The resort's interpretation of Indonesian Rijsttafel, nine rice dishes with spicy sambals, is particularly great. We also loved lounging on triangular cushions and picnicking at the edge of the property's dazzling green-grass field." - Chris Schalkx, Juliet Kinsman

Tanah Gajah, a Resort by Hadiprana

"Take us there. What's the place like? What stands out as you arrive, either on the hotel grounds or in the surrounding area on approach? It’s hard to believe the sprawling resort is only a 10-minute drive from increasingly tourist-clogged Ubud—once you’re there, it’s as though you’re in private a country estate miles from civilization. The hotel sits near the 9th-century Goa Gajah, or Elephant Cave; as a tribute to this sacred temple, elephant statues line the winding driveway to the open reception area. Lovely. So what's the story behind the Chedi Club?Once the family home of Hendra Hadiprana, a serious art collector and one of Indonesia’s preeminent architects, The resort boasts clear influences from its past life, starting with elaborate sculptures in the lobby. A big pond and a long, green-tiled pool (neatly flanked by a phalanx of sun loungers and parasols) nod to Balinese water palaces. What are the rooms like? Any standout accommodations? There are seven suites and 13 villas. The stand-alone villas aren't enormous, but they're thoughtfully appointed with everything you could need, including minibars where much is free. The Pool Villas have their own plunge pools, some of which open out onto the paddy fields. They're as suited to honeymoons as they are family escapes, and everyone is allocated a dedicated butler. Is the restaurant on site worth a stop, or should we look elsewhere for a pick-me-up?The thatched open-air dining pavilion, which overlooks the paddy fields where the menu's rice is harvested, works for low-key lunches and special-occasion dinners alike. The resort's interpretation of Indonesian Rijsttafel, nine rice dishes with spicy sambals, is particularly great. We also loved lounging on triangular cushions and picnicking at the edge of the property's dazzling green-grass field. How's the service?Staff is about as kind, genuine, and helpful as it gets. Deasy Swandarini is a most charming GM—warm hospitality sets the tone. And how would you describe the people who stay here?Well-to-do guests who don't like to show off. Any other amenities on site we should take note of?In addition to the onsite restaurant and bar, there's also private dining and room service. Wellness facilities include a gym, a spa, and tennis courts. There isn't a kids club per se, but you can hire babysitters. And on Tuesday and Friday evenings, the hotel hosts a Royal Balinese Dinner, where local villagers perform Kecak, a Balinese dance. Bottom line: Why would you pick this resort? What's it best for?Come to savor a private villa and beautiful, sprawling gardens—without having to interact with many other guests." - Juliet Kinsman

Tanah Gajah was truly one of the most memorable places I’ve ever stayed. Set in the lush jungle of north Ubud, the grounds are incredibly spacious, peaceful, and luxurious, with a timeless authentic Balinese charm that immediately puts you at ease. Our villa was stunning, with plenty of space, elegant design, and a beautiful deep bath that quickly became one of my favourite spots to unwind. Everything felt thoughtfully curated for comfort and relaxation. There are so many amazing activities available—picnics and romantic dinners in the rice paddies, floating breakfasts, and more—but the sunrise hot air balloon ride was the true highlight. Floating gently above the rice fields while the sun rose was a magical experience. It’s a tethered ride, so it felt very safe and was a perfect balance of adventure and serenity. The staff were absolutely impeccable. From the warm welcome to every thoughtful detail throughout our stay, they made sure my family and I were perfectly looked after. I even had the pleasure of being greeted by the General Manager, which made me feel truly special and valued as a guest. My only regret is not staying longer. I’m already looking forward to the day I return to this incredible place. Highly recommended for anyone seeking luxury, culture, and peace in Ubud.

This stay made our trip to Ubud perfect. We had a quiet oasis in the most beautiful setting yet close enough to enjoy the shops and restaurants in Ubud. The staff made our stay complete - a special thank you to Bima for his help coordinating our stay from the UK and to Young and Gita from guest relations whilst we were there. The Kecak dance was beautiful to watch at the hotels anthitheatre and able to fully enjoy without huge crowds. The staff in the main restaurant were incredible as was the food especially breakfast! A huge thanks to - Desak, Ayu, Edi, Ira, Nopi and Dayu - you made every dining experience for us and also to Sri in the spa - one of the best facials I have had! Every aspect was well thought through and the photo shoot with Mela helped capture the beautiful memories from our time in Tanah Gajah. Huge thank you to all the team - we can’t wait to return!

Our stay at Tanah Gajah was a wonderful experience; it exceeded our expectations. The entire team was very attentive to our well-being, always friendly and eager to help. We were celebrating an important event, and the entire team remembered this and prepared a picnic for us. We also enjoyed the spa and the excellent restaurant overlooking the rice fields. The entire resort is spread over a very large area, so we didn't feel crowded or surrounded by other people. We will definitely want to return—we already miss it.

Words cannot describe how happy I was with this say. The hotel truly is the epitome of beauty and excellent service. Absolutely everything from the rooms to the food to the amenities provided were excellent. The villa itself was very spacious and had a lovely plunge pool and outdoor bathtub. Service could not have been better, and what I loved the most was how all staff members went out of their way to anticipate guest needs. For example, turn down service would be done automatically. Whenever I left the villa and there was always a cold towel, waiting for me when I came back to the hotel. Clearly there is very seamless communication going on between staff members behind the scenes. I also had some guest for lunch one day, and the hotel was eager to go above and beyond and meet their needs and also offered to create custom off the menu dishes without any prior notice. The location of the hotel was also wonderful, very close to the center of Ubud but in a Haven completely by itself. I strongly recommend making plans to do nothing but relax at the hotel for 2 to 3 days. It feels like a completely separate world, far away from anything else. Could not have been happier with my day and will definitely be back.

A most enjoyable family holiday at Tanah Gajah. From the first welcome from our driver at Bali airport to the time we departed, service from the team was first class.|This is not one of the newer glitzy resorts which the over development of Bali is springing up in every corner, but an oasis of rustic charm a short distance from the chaos of Ubud.|We were fortunate enough to have booked villa 1 - The Hapriana Estate, which bang for buck was outstanding. A magnificent space for us and our two teenage children, with an excellent private pool. The website photos are very accurate.|The shuttle service to Ubud was efficient, as was service at breakfast and dinner, which we enjoyed most days.|The complimentary massages were excellent, way beyond expectations for a resort of only 20 villas.|On our first evening we enjoyed the traditional Bali fire dance immediately outside our villa, the staff (many of whose family members take part) are rightly proud of this event.|The second time the dance was held during our stay we were unable to secure a booking for dinner at the restaurant, however the hotel more than compensated for this with a most generous dinner in our room. We would recommended booking dinner if you wish to eat there, even if the hotel seems quiet.|Overall a slow-paced, lovely stay in a genuinely impressive environment.||Our next hotel in Bali could not compare to Tanah Gajah.

AMAZING PEACEFUL RETREAT!||We are a family of 4 - 3 adults and one teen. We stayed for 5 nights in a family suite.||Overall, this resort is beautiful. From the moment we arrived, the care and attention we received was outstanding. ||The hotel consists of 24 villas set on beautiful and immaculately maintained gardens. In our villa, we had a lovely lounge, 2 large bedrooms (one with a king bed and the other with twin beds). All the rooms are very tastefully decorated in traditional balinese decor. There were 2 toilets and a shared bathroom (double sink) and single large shower. We had our own outdoor 5m pool with outdoor bathtub. ||In our deal was included: afternoon tea every afternoon between 4 and 6pm and cocktails between 6-7pm (1 per person).||We also visited the spa and had a 90 minute massage which was amazing!||The hotel has 2 lovely outdoor pools. There is a small gym which has free weights and a tennis court. ||Breakfast and dinner is served in a beautiful open lounge over looking rice paddy fields. The staff again were amazing and so attentive. We are vegetarian and the staff were very accommodating to our dietary requirements. A special thank you to Ayu and Darma who looked after us.||Overall this hotel was amazing and felt like home away from home. We would certainly return!

How to begin explaining a perfect place? The property is amazing, one of the prettiest I have seen. The staff the most kind and hospitable we have experienced. The food is unique and every bite we take we enjoy it better. Nothing is difficult for them to do for us. Just to stay here we will come back to Bali. My daughter loved their swans who were gentle and serene , depicting that they are well taken care of and loves too. You can see squirrels running around which is so fascinating. We did the rice paddy and village trekking which was so interesting. We miss this place so much. It’s a place not to be missed. Coming back for sure.

My family of 2 adults and 2 teens stayed from for 4 nights in a 2 bedroom club pool villa booked on a Luxury Escapes package which included USD300 spa credit, choice of either lunch or dinner at the main restaurant Tempayan and one-time hot air balloon. I can honestly say this is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at. Once inside the hotel grounds, the location is peaceful and tranquil. The grounds are excellently maintained and the service is out of this world. The staff genuinely take care of their guests and it is clear that they have a great deal of pride in the work that they do.|The only slight downsides are the Jack-and-Jill set up of the bathroom in the 2 bed villas - there is a lack of privacy at times and also the private pools would be more enjoyable if heated as they are in enclosed, shaded areas. |The Luxury Escapes package inclusions were also fabulous and the staff went above and beyond, including preparing anything we asked for from the dinner menu and not rigidly sticking to the Luxury Escapes package, allowing all 4 of us to enjoy the balloon flight when they could have insisted on only two members of the family going up due to the weight limit. The club inclusions such as daily laundry, afternoon tea and evening cocktails were also most appreciated. |We will never forget the sheer beauty of sitting in the main restaurant and having a cocktail or a meal and looking out over the rice padi fields.|I can thoroughly recommend this hotel to anybody who wishes a stay in the Ubud area of Bali - we will certainly return.
