"Over the last four months, the owner of Tandoor Char House has distanced himself from day-to-day operations at his three restaurants to focus on converting his River North location into a pantry of sorts, making culturally appropriate meals for the mostly South American migrants housed at police stations across the city. More than 14,000 migrants have arrived in Chicago over the last year or so. Sardharia and his team have distributed more than 250,000 meals, aided by mutual aid groups and other restaurants, transitioning from fried chicken and fries to arepas, empanadas, and more. Restaurants like Chicago’s Dog House, Cafe Bionda, and more have aided the effort." - Ashok Selvam

NOTE: This review is from my experience with Tandoor's concession stand at the Taste of Chicago on 09/07/2024. I had the loaded Chaat fries. They were ok. Basically curry chicken, cilantro, and onion. It was an unexpected offering. Mixing Indian and American food. It wasn't bad but it didn't have a taste that was very pleasant and memorable. I would suggest adding spices, as it tasted like there wasn't much. As for the service, great staff. Friendly and vibrant. The stand was nicely set up and large with plenty of cash registers and good marketing for the brand. I am willing to come and have a dine in experience in the future.

Google
The restaurant claims to close at 1 AM, but they stop allowing guests in as early as 12 AM. To make matters worse, they don’t even answer calls after 11 PM. This level of service is extremely disappointing—I’d rate it at zero and definitely wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.

I wish I could say the phone ate first but one bite into this food and I could not stop! The freshness, the flavor, blown away is an understatement. We even got the pleasure of meeting the owner, Faraz, who was so delightful! Knowing the amazing food came from such a kind person was the cherry on top! Needless to say, I am hooked and excited to be hungry again so I can order more!!!

Google
It was just okay…I honestly think the people who left good reviews must have never had decent Indian before. Go around the corner for more flavor and a better ordering experience. Kind of a waste of money. I’ll never go back…or should I say order because you can’t even sit down.

Superlative traditional Pakistani food with great American fusion items also, with generous proportions for the price. Great job guys. Will be my go to when Devon St. feels too far - a compliment as far as I’m concerned. Give these guys a shot.

Google
Got a to go from here a couple of times. I think the food here is hit or miss. Got tandoori, it was good. Got tikka masala the other day, it was below par ( very creamy and decent taste) Although their packing and quantity is very good and generous. Not recommend.

Google
I got charged $4 for this burned bread that did not taste fresh nor tasted anything like the garlic naan I ve had from other places. The food is not as flavorful and it s pricey for no reason. Definitely not worth getting food from here for what they charge you.

Ordered a chicken wrap and received this. Pieces of chicken rolled in a dry thick naan with nothing else inside

Gagandeep K.

Yelp
I ordered chicken roll, chicken 65 biryani, chicken curry, parantha and naan for 4. The quantity was huge. The pranthas naan were big and thick and got cold and hard once we started eating. The roll was also huge and it is more than enough for 2 people. I really liked the biryani however the roll with parantha had very thick parantha and I could get the taste of raw turmeric. The taste of the chicken thigh was good though. I have never seen this huge roll in my entire life.

Yelp
I got takeout and the process was quite easy. I ordered online and was able to do curbside pickup. I ordered the chicken tikka masala spicy and it was a little to tame for my taste. The daal was decent, but it lacked depth in flavor. The palak paneer was different than I expected. It had a bit of a smoky flavor that wasn't entirely pleasing. The aloo masala and vegetable samosas were really good. The garlic naan could have been a tad fluffier, but it was good. Overall, I don't think Tandoor Char House will be my main takeout spot. If I were to come back, I think I would dive further into the small plates.

Matt S.

Yelp
I think this is a ghost kitchen. I ordered some carry out, called the phone number, and then a few minutes later a guy came out with my order. The quantities of food was great. I got the shrimp tiki Masala and garlic naan. Overall, I just don't think the Masala was my favorite.

Yelp
We ordered a lot of food for takeout today as my husband was craving for their food. Big thumbs up for the takeout package! I was surprised that everything felt like fresh out of kitchen when we got the delivery. The food was carefully wrapped with tin foil, so everything was nice and warm. Overall, the food was delicious. Love their beef samosa for the crispy shell and garlic naan bread for the fluffiness. However, the Tandoori Lamb Boti Kabob was terrible. The meat was dry, chewy, and loaded with spice... Not sure if this is the way that lamb kabob is supposed to be, but that dish is one bad apple that ruins the bunch.

Sandra S.

Yelp
They are just doing the takeouts, but the food here is great! The best Chana Masala I've ever had!

Paras P.

Yelp
Tried this through a delivery app. Ordered the chicken tikka, veggie samosa, garlic naan and cheesecake. Biggest disappointment was the cheesecake, the size for $8 you must be out of your mind. It was nothing special. I did however enjoy the samosa and chicken tikka. Quality and quantity was decent, they should consider smaller pieces of chicken because it was sort of dry. One of the best things is your entree includes rice. So many Indian places don't include it or charge extra which is ridiculous for the price they charge tor the entrees. Overall, I might order again and try some seafood options. Overall I rated it a 4 because of quality for delivery. Overall value and taste I would say a 3/5.

Yelp
We had a large family get together tonight and ordered food for delivery. Tandoori Char seemed a little confusuled [sic] by either the size of the order, the location for delivery or some other reason for being very tardy time wise. Other than that (but it was still a big deal) the food was good. We ordered a lot of dishes: Tamarind chicken wings Chicken Tikka Masala Lamb Kaharai Palau Paneer Chana Masala Mutter Paneer Tikka Vegetarian Biryani When one does a review one must touch on all aspects of your dining experience. Tandoori Char was definitely three stars! It was just the confusion getting the food here that kinda turned me off. So many factors go I to making a dinner work that if (just) one of those components is off, it ranks the other components that click. Such was the case with Tandoori Char tonight.

Yelp
Was excited to try this place due to the exciting concept of modern and fusion desi food. Sadly, I was disappointed. I ordered for takeout, so perhaps in house would be better? Anywho, I tried the tandoori beef boti kabob, chaat fries, and mango lassi. The lassi was ok, not sweet enough and didn't really have a lot of mango flavor. The chaat fries were just normal curly fries, absolutely no chaat or masala -- I had to add that on myself. They were also pretty overdone and sadly, too crunchy. The tandoori beef boti kabob was overcooked and tasted far too charred. It came with rice which was alright, slightly too salty for my taste. Overall, I had higher hopes for this place.

Kennedy H.

Yelp
Very decent Indian food! I ordered the veggie samosas and chicken Tikki Masala both good. Cilantro chutney was not the best and Tikki Masala was a bit salty - 6/10

Yelp
Tandoor Char House has always been my go to for Indian in the city. It's consistently SO GOOD. I was excited to learn they were opening up a new River North location. Thus, I had to give it a try. The service is fantastic - everyone's super friendly and funny. I recommend the Chana Masala (perfectly spicy). This is probably the best Channa Masala I've ever had in the city. I grew up eating home cooked Indian food and I take the cuisine very seriously. Tandoor Char House was some of the best, most home-style Indian food I have ever stumbled upon.

Ess E.

Yelp
Service: great Food: the mixed tandoor platter was totally worth the walk My husband chose this place for his Father's Day dinner. The food was great for the most part but we won't be back unless they add seating to this location. Most of us in the area are tourists and the last thing I want is the smell of all that food in my room all night. Plus walking back with food means you end up with lukewarm dinner. I'm sure the platter would be absolutely divine on site. We found out very late that this was take out only. Would have definitely tried their kulfi if we were dining in. The closest dine in was an hour walk.

Yelp
I recently discovered elevated Indian dining Tandoor Char House in Lincoln Park! They have HUGE portions enough to feed your entire group of friends. The interior was very elegant, perfect for a date night. Best part of our dining experience is their BYOB service. If you forget to bring your own drinks, don't sweat! Lakeside Food Wine Spirits is just down the street! Their Mixed Grilled Platter is amazing, big portioned and everything was perfectly flavored and grilled. And of course, we ordered their famous Chicken Empanadas and Butter Chicken which pairs so well with our red wine. I am pretty satisfied with the desserts we chose and highly recommend for you as well: Falooda Kulfi (Rose Ice Cream) and Mango Cheesecake!

Roohi A.

Yelp
This has always been my go to place for halal near downtown, but they've recently have been putting way too much salt in their food. I'm sure if they tapered the amount of salt, we could taste the meat and other spices. Other than that the fusion foods are delicious and I look forward to the change.

Mona G.

Yelp
I again ordered since the manager called and wanted me to give a shot again. I ordered tandoori chicken and samosas. Samosas were deep fried and were burnt. Tandoori chicken also didn't have any taste. No salt and no spice. I wouldn't recommend anyone for Indian food

Hannah U.

Yelp
Order from here often. Tried their wings today and paid $20 for only 3 wings. Not worth the money.

Pete R.

Yelp
Generally don't write reviews but I must say the food here was FANTASTIC!! Ordered carry out and first off i def recommend lots of naan...executed perfectly. We tried the assorted naan basket which was a nice mix and of course, had to get extra plain and garlic...very good. For appetizers had the tamarind wings and vegetarian samosas, both excellent. The wings were very well seasoned, great unique flavor! Entrees chicken tikka masala, chana masala, and boneless chicken biryani. Again all excellent!! One of the best biryanis I've ever had. The chana masala was seasoned perfectly! Also, make sure to try the cilantro chutney....AMAZING!! Portions were huge and did not have to wait long either. Highly recommended and great to see a locally owned spot with such great food! Cant wait to order again.

Yelp
Whaaaaaaat? Tandoor Char House has a new Second location that delivers to me? 2021 is off to a great start! Ordered my go to's. Chicken Tikka ( spicy ) Chana Masala ( spicy ) 2 - Garlic Naan and an order of Samosas. Food was delivered within 40 minutes and came hot. They use their own in house drivers when you go through their website so I'm sure they make sure that hit bags are being used during the cold Winter months. Tandoor Char House for President 2024!

Yelp
Before I start my review, I just want to say that I'm first-generation Indian, born & bred in the suburbs, and I don't think my own mother's home-cooked Indian meals are good enough for my taste; yet I am willing to give 5-stars to Tandoor. ORDER lots for delivery or carryout (good fresh or leftovers the next day) and share with a group of friends, and they are great about packaging the left-overs to go (great delivery service as well). I would highly suggest their lamb/chicken biryani, chicken tikka masala goes great with their bread choices (soft naan) and you should try a mixed platter of their appetizers. This is a family establishment, and the brothers that operate also have their great grandmother's achar recipe. All in all this is is a great local family establishment, they follow social distancing guidelines, and I highly recommend supporting them and am thrilled that they opened up this location in River North.

Shan S.

Yelp
Masala fries were great - a nice spin on a modern classic. The mixed grill was good, but I wouldn't say it was particularly different from most of the other tandoori chicken or seek kabab that I've had in my life. But I ordered it for delivery, so I'm guessing it's probably spectacular in person.

Asif B.

Yelp
Have ordered from here a couple of times. Extremely pricey and mediocre food at best. Possibly gotten food poisoning and/or diarrhea from the last time I ordered. Buyer beware.

Sumera K.

Yelp
Great service but okay food. A little overpriced. They did us free chips and yellow rice. Overall ok. Wouldn't come back again.

Jake S.

Yelp
This place is frickin great. The food is fantastic, portions are huge, and the price is really affordable. On top of that, the owners are brothers cooking their family's recipes and they are super nice! If you dine in they will come say hi/serve you personally which is nice. They used to have an eggplant dish Baigan Bharta (apologies if I butcher the spelling) that was one of my favorite dishes in Chicago. They told us they can still make it if you request in advance but I haven't tested that. Great restaurant, cool owners, affordable, nice to support local business.

L. Asher C.

Yelp
Very bad pickup experience. Food wasn't ready 50 minutes after pick up time. Only update was when food was already 20 minutes late that it would be right up. Also, they don't have anywhere inside to wait when food is delayed. You rarely see a restaurant botch it so badly. Hopefully they can figure out the basics.

Kira W.

Yelp
The best Indian food I've had in Chicago!!! Highly recommend! My boyfriend usually gets the Butter Chicken or chicken Tikka Masala and I get the Chana Masala. Their Garlic Naan and samosas are incredible! If you haven't tried this place yet, you definitely should!

Oliver S.

Yelp
Hands down the best Indian food in Chicago. Recommend the Veggie Samosa or Lamb Biryani. Easy to order and quick delivery!

Mirna S.

Yelp
Amazing food I love the lamb it's so good, and the garlic naan and chicken Tikka Masala is amazing love it. I recommend their amazing food.

Pao L.

Yelp
I wanted to love it so bad but.... the food just wasn't that great. I ordered the beef nehari - the beef was tasteless. The dish needed salt. The sauce was so so bland. The samosas were also just very bland. I have definitely had much much better Indian/Pakistani food. Not going back.

Stan G.

Yelp
It's fantastic. All of it. Get extra achar. My wife and get multiple meals whenever we order from here - I could (and sometimes do) eat it every day of the week

Reginald E.

Yelp
This review is for a delivery experience. Most of the food was fine to average. Not spicy enough but that's to be expected from South Asian places in this part of town. Unforgivable though was the chana masala. The chickpeas were hard as rocks, completely undercooked. I would have to simmer them at home for a couple of hours just to make the dish worth eating. If you can't take the time to prepare a dish right (I ordered later at night) then just take it off the delivery menu.

Stefanie P.

Yelp
I ordered the garlic naan, mutter paneer tikka masala and the veg samosas. The food was flavorful but the masala was waaaay too salty. It also didn't have a very nice flavor. Not sure what made it not taste so nice but I don't think I'll be ordering again.

Chadd B.

Yelp
Tandoor Char House's original Lincoln Park location is our go to spot for Indian/Pakistani, and thrilled that they opened a River North location. Food is delicious and service awesome, and we rarely branch from our usual family style order of Palak Paneer, Assorted Mixed Grill, Chicken TM, and Naan. Serving sizes are very generous, so I usually order a few extra containers of Achar (carrot and cabbage pickle) and have meals for a few days!

Jon S.

Yelp
Really really good and authentic biryani. Most places just throw some spices and rice together, but they make their biryani the proper way. Would recommend.

Maggie A.

Yelp
Fabulous! Ordered the Tandoor Mix Grill Platter. It was delicious. I would order it again :)

Ravi P.

Yelp
Look no further for good indopak desi food. My guy at Tandoor is always on point! These guys got 2 locations now for double the fun! Wraps, meats, chat fries... all good stuff!

Gary B.

Yelp
Chicken saag was good and tandoori roti was large. I ordered for delivery and nothing showed up. Was grubhubs fault entirely. When I called the restaurant, they immediately took ownership and sent me a fresh hot order via doordash. Chris called me and assured me that he would get grub hub to refund the money. Knowing that I am at a hotel and not likely to be long term customer. Awesome service.

Hadeel A.

Yelp
The best Tikka Masala you will have in the Chicagoland area, hands down. Their Lamb biryani is so tender and the customer service is very considerate. Have been going here for a few years and the quality still stands!

Carol H.

Yelp
amazing service - we had an uber snafu extraordinaire and I called the restaurant and they found a table space for us to move the reservation and the food was delicious. absolutely delicious. we decided to split everything and one of us was a vegetarian so everything we had was vegetarian and it was scrumptious. if I could eat like that I would become a vegetarian too.

Kris F.

Yelp
Tandoor is honestly one of the best places to go in the city. Everything is fire. Only okay part is that it's in LP which can get kind of ehhhh try hard.

Aziz A.

Yelp
It's rare to find authentic Indian food that has such a rich flavor. Was very excited to see this new location open in River North. Extensive menu with great traditional dishes such as chicken tikka and I absolutely love their Tandoor grilled items. Their naan is absolutely perfect and my family really enjoyed the fusion dishes, the tamarind wings are a must try. My kids love the chaat fries. Definitely 5 stars. Arguably the best Indian food you will get in Chicago.

Marissa B.

Yelp
Amazing food! Everything is so good but the tandoori chicken is probably my favorite. Tons of flavor and cooked to perfection. The staff is also so kind and helpful. Highly recommend ordering here. I do pick up and it's always fast and easy and travels well. Yum!

Marissa Z.

Yelp
I was so happy to hear my favorite restaurant is in river north!! I recently moved further south and I was missing my favorite food. You can't go wrong here, everything is amazing. 5/5 stars always!

Nadeem S.

Yelp
Amazing addition to River North!!! Best Indian/Pakistani food you'll find in the city!!! Make sure you try the mango cheesecake!!!!

Neal N.

Yelp
I wish I took a photo of the meal to share, but my god this place NEVER disappoints. Used to visit their Lincoln Park location, but so happy they now are in the River North neighborhood. The food is leaps and bounds above its peers, the flavor profiles are so complex and well crafted without being overwhelming. Shared it with friends last night who had never had it and they were impressed. Highly HIGHLY recommend.

Haley C.

Yelp
Amazing food! All the staff, especially the one who answers the phone (Michael I believe) are super friendly and helpful. The naan bread, butter chicken, chicken tiki masala are all delicious. Highly recommend!

Maz K.

Yelp
Best burger I have had in a while. The sauce makes the burger so good! Amazing serving size too.

Maddy G.

Yelp
All three items that I ordered for delivery had to be thrown out. I've eaten a lot of Indian food in my life and I was not even able to get through a few bites of the Tikka Masala, the flavor was completely off and borderline inedible. Definitely do not recommend.

Eric A.

Yelp
Best Indian and one of the best restaurants in all of Chicago. The food is always incredible and the staff is always warm & inviting.

Eddie L.

Yelp
I'm excited to have them open their new location closer to me. I have been to the location on Halsted and fell in love with their food. The staff is very friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about the food. They treat you like family and the food is very authentic and made with love. Their portions are generous, which saves me time not having to worry about what to order for lunch the next day. I generally don't reheat food but there's so much flavor that I catch myself having it for breakfast lol. The way to a mans heart is through his stomach. With that being said, consistency is key and they've managed to maintain the same quality standards with their new location. Robert DeNiro in Casino, " I want an equal amount of blueberries in every muffin." Cheers.
