Google
Unbelievable vegan sushi restaurant that is usually crowded on weekends, and for good reason. While prices are about the same as regular sushi, the ingenious marinades, sauces, and fresh ingredients give an almost authentic experience that you can't even tell you're not eating real fish. Honestly, I even enjoyed their version of the Philadelphia Roll even more. The baker with the torched miso was probably my favorite roll but they all sound delicious and probably taste just as good. Service is smooth with little interaction with the server and the small room has a cozy interior.

Charming, true-to-form classic sushi experience with a fully vegan menu! Reservations highly recommended due to very limited seating & the restaurant's popularity. The specialty rolls are quite filling. Atmosphere is lively and great for friends to catch up. Miso soup ($3) - light, hot, perfect for a chilly evening in Berkeley. Warms up your insides and your soul 😊 Kailua ($16) - my favorite out of the two rolls I had. Such a good mix of sweet and tangy. I really loved the pickled mango. The Wedge ($17) - crispy rice topped with spicy tofu that honestly tasted really similar to real spicy tuna, just without the fishy taste (which I do like, don't get me wrong). My friend and I made reservations online & arrived about an hour early but they still seated us, which was very accommodating. We were put in the corner of the bar, which was a little cramped and awkward but we still had enough space. Service was very attentive, with constant water refills. Great time overall and so much fun getting to see my pal! :)

Google
6/5 sushi place. This is peak sushi if you want to walk away without the guilt of dead tuna or still moving octopus tentacles in your mouth. Everything, including the edamame, is made with care and attention to flavor. The ramen was out of this world with incredible notes and a healthy spicy broth that can end all wars at once. I wish they had more dessert options, but no matter.

Google
Very delicious, all vegan sushi in a beautifully designed little restaurant. We had the Pacifica (loved the texture of the crispy tempura eggplant) & Point Reyes (perfectly spicy and flavorful). We also got the grilled mushrooms & spicy garlic ramen which, in my opinion, were underwhelming compared to the sushi. Our server, Tara, was very friendly and helped us narrow down our options. I will definitely be going back to try out all the different specialty rolls!

Google
Didn’t love the sushi. The best one was the pumpkin roll, also the only one that felt like good sushi. The stuffing in the rest was too much, the tempura was soggy so it just didn’t feel like the right texture for a good sushi. They have a menu very heavily inspired by Shizen in SF, but the quality is quite subpar. Wouldn’t categorise it as good sushi, even by vegan sushi standards.

Google
We had eaten here when we were visiting Honolulu and being a vegetarian its a blessing to find such a place that offers all vegan choices in sushi!!! This location also serves the same menu. We enjoyed the food thoroughly. Orders did not take much time. The place is quite cozy with very few tables and hence its hard to get reservation. We reserved for 9:30 (thats what was left) but the staff was nice to call us for 8:15 availability!!

Google
I experienced Tane in Oahu the first time, and since finding out they have one in Berkeley, it's one of my favorite reasons to go to the Bay Area. The menu was created with such dynamic flavor profiles, and my mouth literally salivates every time I think about it. It's the only restaurant I have closed my eyes to thoroughly enjoy every layer of flavor..

Google
We were blown away by the food - perfect experience! The flavors, textures, presentation, truly excellent across the board! The staff was super friendly and fast (but we didn’t feel rushed). I cannot recommend this place highly enough!! All vegan (and lots of gluten-free options), but I’m sure omnivores would enjoy the food just as much! If I lived in Berkeley I would be fat and broke, cause I would spend allllll my money at this restaurant. Please open a location in San Diego! Sorry for the bad picture attached. I was too focused on the food to take a proper picture! :)

Yelp
We had some vegetarian/vegan friends visit and we wanted to take them to a vegan restaurant that wasn't impossible/plant based meat substitutes. Cute little restaurant tucked between a McDonalds and a closed matcha tea shop. We actually walked past it the first time as it's pretty lowkey from the outside. We were worried about not having a reservation for a party of 4 and based on the other reviews thought we'd need to wait. I guess we were lucky and came in between a lunch and dinner rush! The service was friendly and the server was really nice about us ordering in two different rounds. We ended up ordering twice and tried about 10 different items on the menu. The first items out were the gyoza, edamame and miso soup. The gyoza was delicious and clued us in about how the rest of the dinner would go. All the rolls were fresh, carefully put together and absolutely delicious. We tried tomato nigiri, which looked like red tuna and could've tasted disappointing but ended up being my favorite! All their eggplant dishes were soo good. My friends were so excited to finally be able to have the full sushi experience rather than the typical avocado or cucumber roll. This place doesn't make you miss the fish, and doesn't try too hard to taste like fish. They focus on sauces, texture, high quality rice-- everything you need for a full flavor experience in one bite as sushi is meant to be. I was stuffed by the end and still regretted not taking another tomato nigiri to go.

Yelp
I loved this place!!! The vegan sushi here was exactly what I was looking for. I tried the gobo roll, spicy tofu roll, a mushroom roll, and lastly, katsu. My favorite had to be the katsu and spicy tofu roll. So flavorful, yet so effortless. Came here for Valentine's Day right when they opened and were seated right away. Food and service was great. I am glad we got there when we did because it got super busy shortly after. Definitely worth a visit!

Yelp
Ate here last night and everything was AMAZING! We made a reservation for 4:30pm and were seated promptly with the table already set for our arrival (an extra special touch) The service was great! Our waitress came and checked on us frequently and food came out fast. I loved this quaint little place in Oakland and loved the coziness of it. We ordered a few things off the menu. Gyoza Katsu Garlic edamame Pokai roll Passion fruit cheesecake Everything was super good and I absolutely loved my roll. As a newer vegan and former sushi lover, this is one of the best rolls I've ever had. We will definitely add this to our rotation for date night.

Yelp
I've been here 3x in the past couple of months and the food never ceases to amaze me. I highly recommend making a reservation on yelp. There are not a lot of tables and it's frequently booked out. I am not vegan and love sushi yet this place blows my mind each time. Every roll I've tried has been fantastic and doesn't have me missing real fish. My favorite roll by far is the Pacifica and Pokai. If you can take the heat, the Point Reyes roll is also great. I've tried both the spicy garlic miso and shoyu ramen. I enjoy the spicy garlic miso ramen more. It's a bit creamier than the shoyu. The garlic edamame is also an amazing starter. Packed with flavor and they also give a good amount! This place is one of my top restaurants in Berkeley. Taste, service, vibes are all unmatched.

Yelp
Made a reservation for 7:30 for 4 people to celebrate gradation and we were promptly seated upon arrival. The space inside isn't very large so would definitely recommend making the reservation on Yelp so you don't have to wait. Atmosphere is pretty casual and there are a wide variety of appetizers and rolls to choose from on the menu. My favorite is the ewa-- the creamy avocado with the crunch enoki tempura matcha salt is the perfect savory bite. I also liked the tane katsu which is the shoyu patty appetizer. The rolls are inventive with different sauces and textures, and even as someone who loves sashimi I thoroughly have enjoyed my experiences here.

Yelp
We decided to go to Tane for our 9th anniversary dinner and were so happy with the experience. I love sushi and don't mind vegetarian sushi (I'm a non-shellfish pescatarian so I have more limited options), but my mostly vegan partner hates it. After checking out the menu, he was excited to try this place. The menu has so many options, something for everyone. We over-ordered and ended up being pretty full by the end (but still took a cheesecake home with us), but each bite was so delicious, each dish so beautifully and thoughtfully plated, and each so inventive, that every time a new plate came to the table was a delight. They really elevate vegan food. We ordered: gyoza, katsu, some nigiri: avocado, okra, bell pepper, and then an additional roll. My favorite was the katsu (I *miss* chicken katsu) and the bell pepper and avocado nigiri. The okra ended up being a bit too slimy for me, but still enjoyable. Service was friendly and very prompt. They made sure we had all that we needed and kept our water glasses filled. My only complaints are that the tables are a bit too close together (it's a smaller restaurant so this makes sense, but makes it difficult to maneuver around) and that they don't tell you how expensive the cheesecakes are! They don't have a printed dessert list and had we known they were going to be so pricey we would have skipped it. Highly recommend Tane for a special occasion meal or really when you're just in the mood for some excellent food. For those omnivores reading this: you will not miss meat at all.

Yelp
Wonderful experience. Great flavor, creativity, and presentation. Tried so many offering and the party of four loved it all. Rolls Ewa Wedge Manila Dune Shiitake mushroom best dish Ramen eggplant, brussels sprouts, tofu mushroom pockets, and katsu are my go-to starters. So many choices still to try

Yelp
Tane Vegan Izakaya was my first ever experience eating vegan sushi, and as someone that was skeptical, it was actually some of the best vegan food I've ever had! They were so creative in some of the sushi rolls that I honestly forgot I wasn't eating any meat! We got the Point Reyes roll and the sunset roll which came lit on fire which was, well, gimmicky but interesting to say the least. Aside from the strange presentation on the sunset roll, they were both amazing, with my preference being toward the Point Reyes roll as it was slightly spicy! The tempura was also great, especially the eggplant, which is my favorite. The ramen was also good as well, very light on the stomach, and it didn't make me feel heavy like I usually do after eating ramen, which I enjoyed. I would recommend to book a reservation for dinner in advance as this restaurant is very small, and the seats fill up quick. Tane Vegan Izakaya is a solid vegan spot, and I would come here again with my vegan friends!

Andres D.

Yelp
Very impressive vegan sushi. Spot is cute but not fancy. Almost everything we tried was excellent: the sunrise roll, the bean curd nigiri, and the avocado nigiri were the stand out favorites. Naturally they are limited by the lack of fish, but if you are looking for a vegan place I think Tane would be hard to beat.

Yelp
If you're looking for an outstanding vegan dining experience, this restaurant is a must-visit. From the moment we arrived, we were blown away by the perfect combination of flavors, textures, and stunning presentation. The menu offers wide range of selection from specialty rolls to ramen. Each bite was a delightful surprise, showcasing complex flavors that are sure to impress even the most devoted omnivores. The atmosphere is charming and inviting, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely meal. The staff was friendly and efficient, ensuring we never felt rushed while enjoying our food. I can't recommend this place highly enough--if I lived in Berkeley, I would happily dine here all the time! Be sure to make a reservation, as you won't want to miss the chance to try everything on the menu. This restaurant ranks among the best vegan options in the Bay Area, and I can't wait to return! Food : 10/10 Service: 10/10 Ambiance: 10/10

Yelp
We made a reservation here for a date night. Cozy spot, especially for 2 people to dine in. We found their drinks and food fresh, delicious, and pleasant. The serving staff were courteous, friendly, and efficient. Might take a few to find parking as it's not a rather busy street, so save time for it. And we were definitely happy we reserved a spot, there was a substantial waiting line for dinner when we walked in, highly recommend reserving ahead. Will definitely return!

Yelp
smallish restaurant, pretty loud noise level, usually quite crowded but usually we can get a seat@the bar without a reservation! Japanese minimalist decor- a lot of wood, sushi bar is a nice piece of raw edge wood! ( Personally I prefer & enjoy seeing vegetables rather than raw dead sea creatures in the refrigerated sushi display case ) Service is polite, quick & efficient... The shiso lemonade is delicious & refreshing but so addictive ! The Shio ( light ramen) is my fave, the others are quite strong ! We love the assorted grilled mushrooms, featuring enoki, king trumpet & shitake - yum ! We used to share but now we each order a plate !

Yelp
As three adults, we made a reservation and we're seated in about 15 minutes. The hostess was very warm and friendly answered all of our questions about the menu. We ordered miso soup and a shared plate of eggplant tataki which was very good. Next we ordered 3 specialty sushi rolls: leahi which had smoked beets, cashews, asparagus, avocado, creamy tofu, sweet mustard and orange zest. Yummy ! Next we got Pokai: which had sweet potato tempura, roasted bell pepper, sesame, mustard, and seaweed pearls. Even more delicious! Lastly, we ordered Pacifica: which had tempura eggplant, bell peppers, zucchini, carrot, yellow onion, garlic, aïoli, with a sweet soy sauce. This was the best! Each of the rules had eight pieces and was served expertly on a platter drizzled with the sauces beautifully. We all loved our experience here and are definitely coming back in the near future.

Yelp
I am a huge fan of their sister restaurant Shizen in SF, so I was excited to try the food at Tane Izakaya when I was in Oakland. Their specialty rolls are truly unique and a must-try, each bite a gustatory adventure with a balance of scrumptious textures and flavors. Some of their rolls are very similar to Shizen's but just with different names. I got the Ewa roll ($17) which was 5/5, mainly savory with a hint of lemon tartness. I also tried their spicy miso ramen ($15) which was a medium level of spicy and brought a bold flavor. Some of the toppings were still cold when the bowl came out, but after a light mix and dunking them in the piping hot broth, it evened out. Overall a truly delicious and filling meal!

Dev R.

Yelp
Usually one to hate on vegan-friendly alternatives, but Tane does an exquisite job of bringing together unique styles and flavors in every dish. Flavors and plating are exceptional. One of the best value dining experiences in Berkeley, surprisingly easy to order too much. Atmosphere is nicely lit and lightly decorated, nice place for any type of meal. If you are in a group of 3+, it can be fun to get the roll marked with *surprise* as an ingredient - ask your server for more information. Top rolls: - sunset (must have) - wedge - pacifica Haven't had a bad roll yet based on server recommendations. Top sides: - agedashi tofu - tempura Other: Have only tried the mango nigiri so far, but it was very unique. Reminded us of the flavors of tamarind candy. Ramen had a strong mushroom flavor and is very nice for sharing. Share everything!

Siddhe P.

Yelp
Amazing. Best vegan sushi I've ever had. So much flavor. The staff is very nice and every roll I've tried from here I love!

Susan N.

Yelp
Food was 10/10! My partner and I got the Philadelphia Roll and the Ewa. For a vegan sushi restaurant, I think it's pretty close to the real thing! The Philadelphia roll has a bean curd that was nicely seasoned and balanced well in the roll. The Ewa roll tastes like there's shrimp tempura in it but it's mushroom! There's a nice crunch from the tempura and creaminess from the avocado. The little sauce on top is pretty good too! I didn't really get to experience the service. We came in on the day the place was booked, so we ended up getting our food to-go. The place is really small so it got very crowded real quick! I recommend calling before doing a walk in or do a reservation. Overall, I would go here again if I was in the city!

Miranda T.

Yelp
Came here for dinner with a friend and had a great meal! We were seated immediately around 6:30pm on a Wednesday and our server was sweet and attentive. The atmosphere was relaxed and cozy. I got the point reyes roll while my friend got the wedge roll. We also split the gyoza as an appetizer. Everything was absolutely delicious! The spicy tofu in the point reyes roll added so much flavor. I thought I would notice the lack of meat but the rolls were so good I didn't even care. It made me want to try out more vegan places!

Anjali T.

Yelp
Tane is my favorite restaurant in Berkeley. I come here all the time and it consistently exceeds expectations! They have a fully-vegan menu and a wide variety of options. The specialty rolls are my favorite items on the menu - they are flavorful, beautifully plated, and have varied textures. Their rolls and appetizers are fantastic, but I've found their drinks and ramen to be just okay. I don't recommend their pineapple drink, it tasted very ketchup-y to me. The service is slow but the servers are kind and the restaurant has a nice ambiance. They get quite busy, so it's helpful to make a reservation. I cannot recommend Tane enough! During this visit, I got The Wedge, Half Moon, and Sunset specialty rolls (photos attached).

Tien N.

Yelp
Food here was delicious, the freshness of ingredients and the lightness of each item was great. We ordered everything that we did not try before. Service was exceptional and we loved the firey potato that staff did. Place was nice a cozy, a bit small for large groups though.

yuvraj n.

Yelp
Food tasted amazing and would honestly have this over normal sushi. Wouldn't recommend the Mexican role but the role with beet and spicy aoili was the best (comes with a shot of sake too!). Role with habanero was alright as well. Service was great and we were seated immediately. Busy place so get reservation in advance but we got lucky and they took us a walk in. The restaurant is small inside but lighting and seating is great!

Jeannette T.

Yelp
Best vegan sushi! Good quality food and better than most traditional sushi places. You won't feel like missing anything

James K.

Yelp
Vegan Japanese, reasonable prices, fun spot (5/5 green stars) I'm glad I took the time to write this review, or I wouldn't have learned about Tane Vegan Izakaya. I learned that Izakaya is "a type of informal Japanese bar that serves alcoholic drinks and snacks," similar to a tapas bar. I also learned that Tane in Berkeley is a sister branch to the original Tane in Honolulu! Also, Tane, means "seed" in Japanese and it embodies the restaurant's "commitment to sustainable and innovative dining." The same people are behind Shizen, the popular vegan Japanese restaurant in San Francisco. The founders' goal is to protect the oceans by showcasing tasty Japanese dishes that are made without fish. I think they have succeeded in delivering a diverse menu of satisfying and interesting dishes. I've been there twice now and look forward to going back for a third visit. The second visit was marred a little bit by a loudmouth bore at the next table, but I can hardly hold Tane accountable for that... :D Just bear in mind that it can get a little noisy at night, when it's busy. Staff members were friendly and efficient both times and the food seems to be quite consistent. The simple grilled mushrooms dish ($12) is a good example of the restaurant's aesthetic - good ingredients, cooked quite simply so that their inherent qualities are not lost. I'm also giving Tane Vegan Izakaya 5/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact. * Tane is a completely vegan restaurant. Adopting a plant-based diet is the top thing you can do to mitigate climate change, deforestation, animal cruelty, and food scarcity. * Tane strives to support suppliers that use eco-friendly practices (e.g., pesticide-free) and to minimize their carbon footprint "by reducing waste and sourcing seasonal ingredients directly from local farmers." * The website for the original Honolulu branch of Tane lists some of the produce suppliers, but the Berkeley branch hasn't done this (yet). Please join in and include a Green Stars rating with your own reviews!

Yelp
I've been to Shizen before in SF and surmised from looking at Tane's menu and website that it was likely from the same chef, so was excited to go try Tane's vegan sushi (especially since Shizen doesn't do takeout anymore last I checked, but Tane does). I ordered the half moon, ewa, and baker. Half moon: juicy and savory. I felt there was too much tomato, it's kind of like pico de gallo, but other than that it was pretty good. Baker: I'm generally not a fan of eggplant because of the slippery rubbery texture, but thought they did a decent job marinating it. This sushi has more of an acidic salty tang. Ewa: I liked the tempura in the middle because it was crunchy, but the large amount of avocado contributes to it having the weakest flavor since the avocado itself was rather plain. They gave us some tamari sauce packets as well, but I chose to eat all of the sushi without the sauce so I could get a good sense of how well the sushi stands on its own. Overall, I thought it was good and I am impressed by how creative they get with plant-based ingredients to come up with flavorful sushi. It is rather expensive, but worth a try since I think it really stands out in being memorable compared to most places' vegetarian sushi options.

Mona F.

Yelp
Have I not left a review yet? each time I come here I leave in such bliss that I totally forget to come and tell you how delicious our experience is. I feel like the sushi here is the best. it taste so fresh and is made so well. The fact that everyone that comes into town wants to meet here and no one ever has anything left on their plates is huge. I usually only eat a bite or two at a restaurant and pack my food to go, but that has never ever happened here. I dream of that roll that they light on fire. It is perfection. I seriously can't believe I haven't posted about all the rules we've all got in here. Our friends have come in from other states and even other countries to Tane, it's that good!

Sangamesh P.

Yelp
Amazing place to get best vegan sushi in east bay. The service is quick and very friendly. Finding reservation is little hard .. you can join the wait list but not guaranteed to get in at the time mentioned and might have to a wait little longer.

Kristine W.

Yelp
I first went to this place a few days after it opened a few years ago. Happy to say that on my second recent visit the food was just as good...though much more crowded (so definitely make a reservation before you head over). We had the sunset, leahi, and ewa rolls (see menu photos) along with the garlic soy edamame appetizer. The leahi is my favorite by far, but was curious about the matcha salt on the ewa (hard to distinguish that taste for me, but your mileage may vary). The first time I went we ordered the barber and sunset roll, and I would say the barber is another favorite. *Side note: While my friend and I were waiting for a table, we went next door to the milk tea place but upon returning to the restaurant, the host said that they forbid people to bring non-vegan items in for consumption during the meal. Plan accordingly.

Smileey F.

Yelp
- busy neighborhood as it neighbors UCB (clear and lock your car doors) - serving staff were very accommodating (we came in with an infant in stroller) - food is tasty, feels freshly prepared and beautiful - food prep visible from cozy bar seating - simple, clean and earthy interior - small, expect to wait at least 30-60 minutes to be seated outside of reservations - crowds can be loud Not many vegan options in the EB, let alone exclusively plant-based. We had a delish meal at a reasonable price.

Emeline T.

Yelp
For two people who don't typically go for vegan restaurants, my boyfriend and I didn't totally know what to expect here, but we had a very satisfying meal! We had made a dinner reservation for a weeknight in advance, and I'm not sure how necessary it is but the place is small so they seemed pretty full while we were dining. Service started out a tiny bit slow but once we got our order in the food came out quickly. We were hungry so we ordered 2 special rolls, a California roll, and the katsu. The Point Reyes was recommended to us, and personally I am not a fan of the spice or mushroom texture, but my boyfriend enjoyed it. I liked the Pokai Roll; it had a nice crunch from the tempura sweet potato filling and a good blend of flavors. The California roll was pretty standard tasting; maybe a little less strong than a typical crab filling, but a pretty close imitation. The katsu had an impressive crunch to the breading, and the filling had a mushy texture and a mild flavor. I also ordered the shiso lemonade which was both quite sweet and sour, and pretty refreshing! Overall this was a filling meal, and if you're comparing these items to their non-vegan counterparts, I'd say the flavors (particularly the imitation "crab" and katsu) were just a bit more muted. I probably wouldn't elect for this over true sushi if I had a craving, but it was still a cool experience to try it out! I'm definitely curious about the other rolls we didn't get to try.

Joanne K.

Yelp
This was our first time trying vegan sushi. Surprisingly delicious vegan sushi packed with delicious tastes and textures. We would recommend the fire roll! Service was pretty quick. The restaurant is a little small so we would recommend reservations in advance.

Pankti S.

Yelp
This is one of the very few vegan restaurants I really liked. My friend suggested visiting this place and I agreed with hesitation. To my surprise, everything we ordered was quite tasty. They have very creamy sauces that taste amazing and is hard to believe that it is 100% vegan. We tried garlic edamame for starters which tasted great but comes with the shells so takes an effort to eat it. We tried variety of their speciality rolls - pacifica, half moon, pokai, kailua and point Reyes. They were all good but highly recommend pacifica. The place is generally very crowded so make sure to make reservations before visiting. The restaurant is very small has a cute likeable ambience. The service is slow but the servers are helpful and friendly. The food options are very expensive for the qty they serve but worth a try once. It's in the downtown Berkeley area so finding a parking spot is hard.

Pauline T.

Yelp
My new favorite vegan restaurant! Some of the best vegan food I've ever had, it's so creative and tasty and blew my mind! I usually find that vegan sushi has little to no variability, and restaurants will simply rely on using some form of tofu, avocado, and maybe some jalapeños or something. Tane takes it up 100 notches and creates unique combinations of flavors that blend together so perfectly! Food: Brussels Sprouts (5/5): A MUST order! So delicious, crispy, comes out piping hot and sizzling with the most delicious sauce on top. Ewa (5/5): The presentation matches the taste, so good! The tempura enoki is delicious. Point Reyes (10/5): THE BEST ROLL! We ordered 2 because it was so good. Fun textures, fun flavors, and wonderful presentation. Tane Katsu (3.5/5): I'm not a huge fan of katsu in general, but this one was pretty good! The sauce was a bit too sweet & salty for my liking. Manila Dune (5/5): The chip on too of each roll's slice was such a fun texture boost to accompany the softness from the rice and crema. Soba Salad (5/5): Sooo good. Delicious on a warm day and so refreshing. Great palate cleanser or starter to your meal. Make a reservation for this place if you're going on a weekend/holiday! It got filled as soon as it opened, and I had a reservation. Great service, attentive staff, and amazing food.

Yelp
First time having vegan sushi and I LOVED it! I was celebrating my bday with my vegetarian sister and thought I'd give this place a try. As a huge non-vegan sushi eater, this was such a cool experience! We came in right at opening on a Thursday and there was plenty of seating. As first timers, we were super confused and overwhelmed with the menu, but the waiter was very patient with us and gave us great recommendations. The restaurant vibes were cool and classy, but not unapproachable. The Shiso Lemonade was a fun surprise. So yummy! The highlight of the meal was the Pacifica roll (as recommended by the waiter). Super creamy and crunchy. Would definitely recommend if you like crunchy rolls at other sushi places. The Point Reyes was spicy and much lighter. I was wowed by how the mushroom texture mimicked raw fish. If I could make one suggestion, a menu with pictures would be super helpful.

Yelp
I love the food and the service at Tane - love it. So why the 3-star review? The acoustics at Tane are brutal. I truly couldn't understand our server, and talking with my dinner partner was difficult. Will I come back? Probably, but not during peak hours when it's likely we'll be surrounded by other diners. That's pretty limiting, but I want to enjoy the meal, and I can't when background sound makes conversation frustrating.

Yelp
We had eaten here when we were visiting Honolulu and being a vegetarian its a blessing to find such a place that offers all vegan choices in sushi!!! This location also serves the same menu. We enjoyed the food thoroughly. Orders did not take much time. The place is quite cozy with very few tables and hence its hard to get reservation. We reserved for 9:30 (thats what was left) but the staff was nice to call us for 8:15 availability!!

Yelp
Best sushi place to visit if you are in Berkeley. We have visited this place multiple times and every time it is a hit. Speciality sushi's looks and tastes amazing. Spicy garlic ramen is a must have. It's very very tasty.

Yelp
We were seated at the bar and got to see them make the rolls which was cool! Our server was very sweet and very transparent and communicative when our tempura didn't show until the very end. Overall the food was fine but nothing really surprising or something I would come back for. The tempura was definitely a little over fried, the katsu was pretty mushy in the middle. The rolls were fine! My favorite might have actually been the brussel sprouts. They were deliciously flavored with just the right amount of kick.

Yelp
Everything we ate was delicious!!! We had the katsu as well as 4 sushi rolls. The ube cheesecake was perfect for dessert!

Yelp
The sushi here is great! So many options for a vegan restaurant. I've been to a few other vegan sushi restaurants and they don't compare to Tane.

Yelp
Incredible vegan sushi! I have been here a few times and it's always delicious. I recently had their passion fruit cheesecake and it was divine.

Yelp
Tane was an absolutely delightful experience. I loved every single thing we ate. Each dish was deliciously seasoned and so creative. We absolutely feasted. -Shizen Shiitake (one of my favorite bites of the night) -Agedashi Tofu -Gobomaki with burdock root and sweet/spicy shoyu -Leahi with smoked beets -The Wedge with spicy tofu and togarashi -The Half Moon with sweet potato and mango -The Point Reyes which had pickled jalapeño and pineapple (my favorite!) Service was a little slow and a tiny bit chaotic - it's a super small restaurant so you must make a reservation.

Yelp
Celiac review: It's amazing here!!! The majority of the dishes are gf (marked clearly on the menu-- pics below). The only soy sauce they have is the gf kind. They have gf rice beer. Not to mention all-- ALL!!!-- of the tempura and tempura related dishes are gf. Really great experience! I was not glutened either of the two times I went. The servers are also so friendly, and knowledgeable about dietary restrictions. It's a small but cozy space. Notes on non-gf items: It appears that the only items not marked "gf" on the menu are using premade items (bean curd), and so my fellow diners and I thought this is probably not marked gf as the can must say it's processed in a facility that also processes gluten. This is just an educated guess, not confirmed, but everything without bean curd was marked gf ‍

Yelp
Came back for round 2 with some friends, and the food is still great! To borrow my friend's words "I can't believe you can make vegetables taste this good!" We ordered a bunch of food and they all came in pretty quick. The service was great, and the environment nice! (First two images from my first review, the rest are from updated review)

Yelp
Best vegan sushi around. As meat eater who dates a vegan, it can be challenging to find a dining experience to hit every category for date night; vibe, food, intimate. Tane offers all, this is establishment is nestled away in a quaint restaurant shopping mall in the bustling downtown Berkeley area. The dining experience applies traditional Japanese techniques to your fine dining, offering an array of fresh fruit, edible flowers and vegetables to every dish. Eating here feels like magic as the chefs are able to meticulously curate a Re-imagined twist on plant based foods. As a meat eater I could not tell the difference with some of the options. When I come to Tane I am prepared to sit elbow to elbow with other patrons however that does not take away from the date night vibe that I establish with my partner it actually adds to it. Lastly the service is always top tier. The host are graceful and patient.

Yelp
Grilled corn-- good. Tempura-- pretty good The batter is thick but it's also gf. Except for the zucchini the veg was well cooked. The wedge roll is very rich and also spicy Manila dune roll. Good

Yelp
Where to begin? I've been to Tane in Honolulu (10/10 -- best sushi I've ever had!) and I'be been to Shizen many many times, so I was stoked to see that Tane opened up so close to me! It definitely didn't disappoint. The Wedge is just the tastiest sushi I've ever had! I could eat 3 of these rolls by myself. The only thing I'll say is that whatever the red strings are on top of the roll (they look like saffron but don't taste like it? can't tell what it is) are really gross. It doesn't add any kind of taste and if anything, I pick them all off. Next time, I'll just ask for them not to add it because the roll itself is absolutely delicious. Without the little strings, The Wedge gets an 11/10. The Half Moon is so so good as well, I'd definitely order it again. The pickled mango adds the perfect kick because it's so fresh and just tastes amazing. The Barbers roll was interesting. I'm glad I tried it, but I don't know if I'd necessarily try it again. Not because it was bad, but because it was a weird combination of flavors. The food is so good, I just wish they were in a different space. The tables are so tiny and uncomfortable. I can hear the conversation next to me in detail because of how crammed this space is. You bump into the table next to you every time you get up from your table. The ambiance is not it for such a wonderful dining experience. Like, the food is michelin star level in my humble opinion, but this space really drags the rating down for me.

Yelp
Best vegan food in the East Bay! Really lovely staff and beautiful location! I have no clue how they do it, but this place along with Shizen in San Francisco creates some of the most delicious sushi that can be enjoyed by vegans and non-vegans alike. My go-to for any fancy dinner! Reserve in advance!
