Where to Find Next-Level Hummus in Portland | Eater Portland

"This family-owned restaurant has served Moroccan and Mediterranean fare in downtown Portland since 2013. Its vegetarian meze includes a za’atar flatbread smothered in creamy house-made baba ghannouj, garlicky smooth hummus, and tabouli, with a nicely-spiced spinach pie on the side. The restaurant also serves its hummus as a standalone appetizer. Call for takeout orders every day but Sunday." - Michelle DeVona

This place is special. We visited for dinner yesterday and got the Moroccan chicken, and the Kafta stew with seasoned rice. First they brought out freshly made pita bread, hot on a plate, which was very nice. Based on reviews and photos of the food we looked at before coming in, we had high hopes for the food, and still the entrees managed to far exceed our expectations. The flavors and textures are so beautifully done. Even the colors, as can be seen in the photo. This place is family owned and run and you can taste that they have been sharing recipes and techniques for generations at this point, because it is all just so wonderful and delicious. Nothing is anything close to bland, but you also don't taste salt - just genuine flavor, in everything they make. It's true comfort food, done so well it's as if your own loving grandparents made it for you. The service is warm and thoughtful, and very nicely done. They also offer a number of lovely desserts made in house which should definitely be tasted if you have the chance after what will almost certainly be a satisfying and filling meal. We quickly decided to add this place into our regular rotation of places to eat, and we're already looking forward to going here again.

Excellent food and service. Glad to be back with Najia and family at their wonderful restaurant. Back after many years in this Moroccan ambience. First time after COVID. More folks need to come here. They deserve your visit. This is one of the best Moroccan restaurants in Portland.

Google
Absolutely delicious! I had a vegetarian fave bean dish, and my sister enjoyed the lamb with rice. The salad is really fresh too. Excellent service, friendly waitstaff.

Google
Absolutely delicious food. I highly recommend a visit. The grape leaves and hummus were excellent. The meat trio was amazing. Try the mint lemonade too.

Google
I’m surprised that this place isn’t WAY busier! The food was absolutely amazing — I got the vegetarian mezza plate, which has many little dips and things to nibble on. I especially loved the small ‘rice wrapped in grape leaves’ that was included on my plate. I brought home a sandwich order from here for my sister and she said it was beyond amazing. We will definitely be back! Beautiful little restaurant.

Google
Moroccan cuisine being my most favorite, so my expectation with the food and ambience was really high. I would say the food is phenomenal, tajine was the recommendation so went with it. The meat was so tender and the flavor was great. The ambience really cool, gives the touch of Moroccan restaurants and the souvenirs around the restaurant are pretty cool to watch. I loved the over all experience. Excellent and quick service. It hardly took them few minutes to get my order on the table. Definitely recommending this place

Google
So I grew up in Brooklyn New York and I was surrounded by tons of middle eastern food. I definitely know what to look for. This place is beyond amazing. family owned. Mom cooks all the food and their children help. I got the mix plate and it was ridiculously delicious. The rice tasted like my mom made it. The chicken shawarma was so good. The beef kebab was amazing as well and I’m sure the lamb is good but I don’t like lamb so I got double chicken. Wow was it amazing! The house bread is insane as well. I’ll be back.

Google
Good food, nice service. Loved the music. I like that they had plenty of vegetarian offerings. Would be nice if they had beer/cider/wine, but I also understand it's likely a purposeful choice they're making so good on them. Will come back to try some additional dishes.

Yelp
During my Portland work visit, I was recommended this restaurant by a colleague who greatly enjoyed their lamb shank. It was a new restaurant for me to check out, and fortunately not far from my hotel at all! I was excited by being in a Moroccan restaurant, as I always enjoy Moroccan teas. Without hesitation, I ordered their Moroccan tea (note - their tea order is enough for 3 people. I came alone, so it was a lot of tea to drink, but no complaints!). Tasted as wonderful as I remember it, with a refreshing mint, yet minimally sweet, profile. Then the entree. I ordered their Tagine of Lamb, which is the lamb shank entree. It's a huge dish! Definitely come on an empty stomach. I also got an order of their Moroccan bread to accompany the dish. Lamb is usually not my favorite protein, but they may have well made it my favorite tonight! The lamb was incredibly tender and moist, literally falling off the bone. I got the side of eggplant and rice with the lamb shank, and I love how the eggplant skin was nice and crisp, while the inner portion was still tender. The Moroccan bread had the right ratio of firm yet soft, and it was perfect for soaking up the juices off the plate. I came on a Tuesday night, and it seemed a little sad that the restaurant wasn't more occupied! The prices aren't super crazy, given the huge portions you get. It's absolutely a hidden gem in Downtown Portland and is worth the visit!

Yelp
I had the pleasure of eating here during my trip to Portland this past weekend and I have been dreaming of the food ever since. The chicken lentil soup is one of the best tasting dishes I have ever had in my entire life. I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant and I can't wait to come back on my next trip to Portland!

Yelp
Me and my husband really enjoyed this place. We got the three kabob dish with rice and a side of baba ghanoush with homemade pita bread. We split this meal and it was enough for both of us, we even had left-overs. The vibes here are pretty chill - low lighting and cozy seating. I think it is a good place to casually catch up with friends, or take someone out on a date. The staff were very attentive and hard-working. Overall I really liked this place.

Yelp
Tucked away on a side street, it's easy to overlook this little gem. It's a cozy space where the owner greats you and makes sure you're happy all the way from start to finish. The lamb shank with olives and fries was stunning. The fries were so hot and crunchy, they were perfect with the sauce and the meat. Whatever you do, don't have the baklava! It's addicting and absolutely the best!

Yelp
Imagine this: it's 40 degrees and sprinkling rain. You've just been tattooed and you're sore and hungry. You want something hot and filling with spices and protein. You read good reviews about a restaurant a few steps away from your hotel. You've never had Moroccan food but it sounds good so you go. And it's WONDERFUL. I had the chicken stew with the homemade tomato sauce and jasmine rice. Flavorful, hot, delicious. Service was attentive and pleasant. Ambiance is cozy and warm. Just amazing all around. Recommend!

Yelp
The food was amazing! I got the eggplant stew, the tomato sauce was flavorful and just hit the spot of comfort food. Husband got Moroccan chicken, that he wiped clean with fresh pita. 100% recommend this place!

Yelp
Spinach pie was divine and Turkish coffee def put some hair on the chest (this is a good thing).

Yelp
5 dollar can of soda. That's one of the highlights. Yes a plain coke. Anyways got the baked chicken and half of it was cold and should have refused it but my friend has anxiety

Yelp
If you like Moroccan food, this is the best place to get them.. authentic! Don't understand why this place is not busy!

Yelp
We came to Tangier and as soon as we walked in, the ladies standing near the kitchen looked at each other and I could hear a faint "oh crap" I know they are open for another 30 mins but we were turned away still. Unbelievable!!

Yelp
Holy moly. I was floored by this place. When we arrived there was nobody there. It took a while because it seemed like there was just one woman working there in the afternoon, but it was fresh and well worth the wait. We ordered a bunch of things to share. The mezza meat platter was amazing. The meats were all perfectly seasoned. We had their happy hour spinach pie and it's probably the best I've ever tasted. The hint of lemony goodness hit juuuust right. The spinach lentil soup was so flavorful and hearty. I had never tried majarda (esp?) before and I really liked it. The fresh made bread was huge and so fresh and hot from the oven. Perfectly crisp and golden. Couldn't finish it because we were so stuffed but it was amazing. The hummus was pretty good. The falafels were a little bitter for my taste but my boyfriend loved them. He usually doesn't like tabbouli (esp?) because it's too sour for his taste but this was perfectly balanced. The baklava was also pretty good. But our favorite thing ever was the Moroccan mint tea. It was strong, but sweetened to perfection and piping hot. We couldn't finish it all, but we got a to go cup and needed to double stack because it was still so hot! I can't recommend this place enough. Think I got indigestion afterwards, but 10/10 would do this again. Just eat slower and stick to my faves next time.

Yelp
Some of best pita and hummus I've had! Highly recommend. Everyone is very kind and the food is delicious

Yelp
I had such a great experience at this restaurant! The staff was so friendly, warm, and hospitable & the food was delicious! We ate mostly from their happy hour menu which was full of great options to choose from. The ambience of this restaurant is both aesthetically pleasing and rich with culture. It is simply beautiful. My favorite was the dessert we took home; this was hands down the best baklava I have ever had. I couldn't even wait until I got home to finish it because it was so rich, sweet, and flavorful. So much so that I will be going to get more tomorrow so I can have it one more time before I start my 75 hard challenge next week. Overall I give this experience a 10/10 and will definitely be back!

Yelp
Excellent food I m Moroccan I can confirm this is authentic Moroccan food Great friendly service

Phillip A.

Yelp
Food: Kebab was dry and tasteless. Lamb shank was okay. Service: Unfriendly, 'dont care' attitude. Ambiance: Unpleasant smell. Maybe because of scented candles burning in the toilet mixed with some other unpleasant smell.

Yelp
Upon walking in, the environment is very calm and the aesthetics completely create a warm and welcoming ambience. I came with my coworkers here and they were able to accommodate our table of 10 people. The food was really delicious we got the lamb tagine & the meat skewer combo!! We were OBSESSED! Ps: get the rice and raisins
google avatar

Cathy Z.

Yelp
A must try. I was surprised by how quiet it was on a Friday around dinnertime, considering how incredible the food is. I had the lamb tagine, which was perfectly tender and so delicious. Will definitely be back!

Greg Y.

Yelp
Tangier, an unassuming presence in an old building that delightfully surprises. Empty when we arrived, only one woman present to greet and take orders with polite explanations who disappeared into the kitchen after dropping a pot fragrant pot of fragrant mint tea. She brought out simple looking plates of happy hour appetizers, babaganoush, tzatziki, and falafel. We snuck nibbles before she arrived with fresh baked large pita, super good, the best falafel ever. Other tables filled quickly. She handled all with calm deftness and no delay in our entrees. Our food was delicious. I never saw anyone helping her, even peeking into the kitchen. Done, I saw her calmly watching her dining room full of guests, so approached her to express how much we enjoyed the meal. Looking down, I saw a grist mill and asked what she used it for, grinding wheat berries into flour for the bread. I asked how long she had been there, 14 years. You just don't find this kind of authenticity often.

Yelp
Was so delicious, the chicken was absolutely fabulous, very nice environment and setting, I will definitely eat here again when I'm back in Portland, service was very pleasant.

Malika A.

Yelp
A family run spot with authentic Moroccan food that will remind you of home :') Lamb and chicken tagines were tender and flavorful, couscous was to die for! Don't forget to try the tea and desserts!

Chris L.

Yelp
Solid, delicious, fresh Moroccan food! Great service in a simple clean space. The best way to end the meal is with some tea and their assortment of cookies and/or a piece of baklava!

Erica Y.

Yelp
One of my best meals ever. Place is fantastic. Had the Moroccan chicken and it was DELICIOUS. Can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Ploy N.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the Bastilla! The phyllo dough was flaky and crispy. The filling was also packed to the brim with spices and tender chicken. Not to mention, the size was also huge. On the other hand, the Pesto Pizza was mediocre. It was a bit cold when delivered. You can barely taste the pesto and the sundried tomatoes. Onions can also be cooked/caramelized more. Again, huge portion but the taste was not there.
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
Complete crap . Asked for Dessert to be split . Just couldn't do that . To slice one dessert and Pour half the other would just be too much . Which is why , in one hour , four people were in There . The falafel sandwich was shit . The hummus looked like it came from a baby donkey Ass .

Yelp
We came here for a weekend getaway from the Seattle area. I enjoyed the ease of walking over to Tangier for dinner from our hotel. I should not there are quite a few transients in this area but we did not have concerns of feeling unsafe. When we first saw the restaurant they appeared closed as the open sign was not illuminated and there were no patrons. We tried the door and found it opened so we walked in and we were greeted by a lovely woman inquiring if we were interested in dining here. We were seated and brought waters to drink along with menus. We took our time reading over the menus to decide what to get. The young server was patient and informative in answering questions when it came time to order. By this time several other patrons had entered the restaurant and things were picking up. I cannot recall what I ordered but I can tell you that my favorite thing they have is their housemate flatbread, it was so perfectly made from texture to flavor. Everything we ate was pretty tasty and I would go back in a heartbeat.

Noreen R.

Yelp
The Moroccan Chicken with raisin rice and beef and chicken skewers were amazing!! Also, the falafel and sauce were a delicious change of pace from the usual dry falafel. Highly recommend!

Danielle G.

Yelp
Delicious food. Lovely service. Very authentic. Highly recommend the Turkish coffee and the Moroccan chicken

Viviann L.

Yelp
Amazing food, like wow! Large portion and very flavourful. We ordered the Meat Mezza and Tagine of Lamb. So full and our cravings were definitely satisfied. The waitress was a bit awkward but friendly. Clean restaurant and a few tables do reservation isn't needed. Beautiful traditional pots and vases for decorations. My only thing is that the red lights were a bit harsh on my eyes as I have sensitive eyes. Restroom is generally clean but has a smell. Other than that, it was a great experience and would go back again for sure. If you haven't check it out yet, I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
We had the best meal in a really long time at Tangier. We wanted to eat food we can't get where we live and decided on this restaurant. We went on a quiet Wednesday and right away we were struck by the two sweet voices coming from the kitchen. Turns out this is a family run restaurant that, the evening we were there, was being operated by two young sisters. The food was out of this world. I ordered too much because I couldn't decide what I wanted to eat. I'm not even going to suggest a dish because everything we had was amazing so I'm sure you can't go wrong ordering anything. Support this local family and their incredible food! We stayed for a long time after our meal learning about the girls and their family and telling them about ourselves. We just had the BEST experience and I'm sure you will too. (I forgot to take any pictures of my food because I gobbled everything up without even thinking to do so)

Yelp
One of the best Mediterranean food restaurants I've been to in the US. And I love Mediterranean food and eat it often. I'm a vegetarian but my friends and kids got a lot of chicken and lamb dishes and loved it as well. We went for dinner on our trip to Portland but felt soooo good that went back for lunch, something I almost never do on a short trip. The falafels reminded me of the ones I had in Paris, soaked in flavorful sauce rather than the dry ones served in most US restaurants. The Zaatar pizza was just the right balance of flavor and bread. Shatta was not as spicy as it looks but it was just the right amount of peppers for flavor. Spinach pie pizza was surprisingly good, and this coming from a person not into Calzones or pies. Lebney was great with just the right balance to not be bland or too salty. The Pita bread was huge but still very soft and fresh. We got the Rose water and Tangier lemonade and they were both delicious. My kids and friends had chicken shwarama, lamb shwarama, chicken lentil soup, chicken skewers. My 8 year old summed it best - he said the lentil soup was his least favorite and he loved it too(finished the bowl dry!) The only thing I would request modify next time is less cinnamon on the rice pudding. And please please add more desserts to the menu! Maybe Knafeh! Or something with rose! We ordered almost entirely from the all day Happy hour and couldn't be happier with the portions and the prices.

Yelp
Delicious! We were in the area originally looking for another spot but it was closed. We passed this place on the walk & tried it on a whim. There wasn't any music playing so it was a bit silent & awkward but our server was super sweet & made us feel welcome. We decided to share a kafta plate & could not have been happier with the way everything turned out. The food was DELICIOUS! The rice was tender & flavorful, perfectly cooked. The kafta was well seasoned & had a great texture. We asked for hot sauce & she gave us shatta which made everything come to life. Oh and the fresh flat bread, omg! Incredible. Not to mention everything is reasonably priced. At first we didn't think we'd be full but after we finished everything we both were satisfied & did not need another meal for the night. It seems like this is a family business & you can tell that they put a lot of love & care into the food. Will definitely be back next time we're in town! This was one of my favorite spots during our trip, highly recommend for anyone in the area!

Yelp
The food is delicious. The service is always friendly. They treat you like family and the amount of food you get for the price you pay can't be beat. It's a relaxed ambiance that works for a romantic dinner or time out with friends or family. It's one of our favorite spots in Portland.

Yelp
Since our move to Oregon last year I have yet to find a Mediterranean/Lebanese/Mid.Eastern restaurant that I can truly call authentic. Tangier comes close to the flavors I was looking for. Their prices are really good for what you get. Service was 5 stars. For our first visit, we had the 3 kabob plate(lamb in our case) which was served over rice with a side of very authentic garlic sauce and a salad and a lamb shawarma with a side of fries. They serve fresh pita or as I always referred to as Arabic bread. The kabob plate could easily feed 2 people and the shawarma was humongous. The flavors were there, a little understated but was the best I have had so far in the state. However, the meat was very chewy. It was the same with the lamb shawarma. The fries were good. For people who like to dip their fries in catsup, they do not have this condiment here. The nice young lady was very apologetic and gave my kiddo tzatziki sauce to try but she is a catsup girl. We had a lot of leftovers which we took back to our hotel. I'm giving their food a 3.5 rating and 5 star for service. If we're ever in the area, I'd like to come back and try their lamb shank dish and maybe their chicken shawarma too.

Phil P.

Yelp
Fantastic food and amazing service! The best Moroccan food that you will ever eat! Great ambiance! I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
If you are arab and want perfect chicken or lamb, Yallah come here. If you are anyone else, Yallah come here. Tangier is a family owned Moroccan food palace that has the perfect balance of modern and nostalgic atmosphere and flavors. Passing by, without submitting to this food and beverage bliss, is your mistake not mine feel free to try to prove me wrong

William S.

Yelp
Great food, great service, and the perfect atmosphere. Get the Moroccan Tea and the baklava.

Yelp
Went with my husband. We ordered two sandwiches and coffee. Never got coffee. Food was ok. Not much meat. No customer device. Tips were included without service. Nice ambiance. Would not recommend.

Bear Z.

Yelp
I ordered a falafel and it definitely was the worst falafel I've ever eaten! 3 clumps of doughy falafel mush with soggy lettuce and two small Pieces of tasteless tomato. The pita was undercooked and had a scratchy texture. after two bites it went straight into the garbage.
google avatar

Margarita M.

Yelp
Food was great. Falafel was the best I have ever had. I loved the kafta. Moroccan chicken was flavorful and moist.

Burcu K.

Yelp
Still sooooo gooood ,God I had missed this beautiful place. I love this family restaurant , and always delicious food!!! They are one of the big reasons that we get so excited about our visits to Portland
google avatar

Eric H.

Yelp
I absolutely love this restaurant. The food here is not to be missed. I've had Moroccan for at a number of places here in Portland, but Tangier is where I feel in love with it. The staff here are also party of why I love it so much. I feel like family when I'm in the restaurant. They are also always happy to accommodate making a dish for me that they no longer have on the menu, when I get that craving. The location is easy to find, and there is some street parking nearby. If you don't have any luck on the street there are also a few parking garages only a block away. If you haven't been here before, what are you waiting for?!
google avatar

Balakrishnan V.

Yelp
Had an excellent lunch. The place was free as we were there on a Saturday lunch time and we had a host of dishes. Whether it is the hot Pitta bread or the vegetable Mezza platter it was fresh. The food had the correct level of spices befitting a Mediterranean cuisine. The portions was adequate. Baba GhannoujVeggie Mezza Plate

Yelp
So happy we decided to patronize this restaurant family owned restaurant. We had great service and the food was delicious. If I lived in the area I would be back.

Yelp
The artichoke stew was the BEST meal I've had anywhere over the last year. I loved it and was so sad to have to leave the leftovers in my hotel the next day. IT WAS AMAZING!!
google avatar

Morgane L.

Yelp
If you have been to Morocco and fall in love with the pastille like I did, this is the place for you. The orange blossom flavor comes through with just the perfect amount of sweetness. This is the best pastille I've had in the States.
google avatar

Bonnie B.

Yelp
This is my first time eating at Tangier. I was surprised how quiet it was at noon, my friends and I were the only people there--but this is the pandemic so who knows. One of my friends had spent time in Morocco and she recommended the lamb tagine. I ordered this with the preserved lemon and rice. I grew up eating lamb and this was hands down the single most sumptuous and flavorful lamb dish I've ever had. The rice with preserved lemon was delicate and savory. If I lived in Portland, I would visit regularly to work my way through the rest of the menu. The service was personable, friendly and efficient. If you're able to order via GrubHub or Dine and Dash, I highly recommend it!
google avatar

Derrick P.

Yelp
Great service, very friendly, and the food was very flavorful. We had a chicken wrap and a Gyro, and both were very large and filling. We will definitely be back!!

Graphix G.

Yelp
Note: I ordered this food through GrubHub. The food was overall fine. Was it worth the up charge of delivery and fees and tip through GrubHub (which is usually $10-15) - NOPE. Was it even worth it without the GrubHub prices - not to me. For those prices you may as well as go to Nicholas Restuarant. I ordered a Meat Mezza platter, a lamb Shawarma Sandwich, Baba Ghannouj and Pepperoni and Sausage Calzone. I'll break this down into the specific dishes. Fine for me means it was okay but I wouldn't go out of my way to order this again, especially via GrubHub with the extra charges. Meat Mezza platter - meat was fine - tabouli was great (honestly probably the best thing I had from this order) - falafel was fine - hummus was fine - baba ghannouj - see below, not that good - stuffed grape leaves - this item was the worst thing in the order by far. It was tough and chewy and lacked any flavor besides salt. It was just really weird and off-putting and probably the worst stuffed grape leaf I've ever tasted Lamb Shawarma Sandwich - the item was prepared incorrectly - I requested no onions and there were onions in it so I had to get that item refunded - what I did taste was fine - large size - basic with regard to fillings Pepperoni and Sausage Calzone - the way it was wrapped up in tinfoil is NOT good for delivery, it made a mess and made the item super soggy - it tasted fine though it's pretty hard to mess up cheese and meat wrapped up together - definitely didn't look like the photos I've seen, maybe due to the way it was packaged Baba Ghannouj - not that great - different in not a good way from other versions I've had from other places - I honestly couldn't tell which spread was hummus and which was the baba ghannouj - that is not a good sign - no depth of flavor, a lack of smokiness and the consistency was super smooth which for this dip wasn't what I wanted (I expected more texture and the ability to tell it was eggplant) Bag of pita bread - adequate
