14 Treasures of Fisherman’s Wharf Food and Drink Scene

"This Argentinian food truck serves some of the area’s tastiest and most reasonably priced food. It’s best known for its flaky, Argentinian-style baked empanadas and its massive, chimichurri-topped burger — low-key one of the better burgers in the city. But you can also grab a seat in the little covered dining area and enjoy a heartier sit-down dinner — say, a grilled steak over saffron rice." - Eater Staff, Laura Smith Borrman

We were visiting from LA and stopped by this spot while exploring SF—so glad we did! The seating area was super comfortable and beautifully set up, which made the whole vibe even better. Everyone working there was really nice and welcoming. The food? So good. The meat and chicken were seasoned perfectly and cooked just right—tender, juicy, full of flavor. The salad was also a standout with a super tasty dressing. Everything we had was high quality and delicious. Definitely a place we'd come back to next time we're in San Francisco!

Google
Honestly, such great food. Tiny place but truly a small gem. Super tasty burger. Kind guys working here. Even someone randomly ordering before us offered a taste from his fries. It's hard to see such friendly approach these days. This place will be part of our SF memory. 😍

Google
Great food, great portions and great prices. Tanguito burger- Ingredients tasted fresh. Proper melted cheese on a thick and juicy patty. Caramelised onions and bacon added lots of flavour although it can get a little too salty on some bites. Portion was big and can actually get you full instead of a certain "Double-double" from the nearby chain. Perfectly priced too at $13.75. Garlic fries- The only people that shouldn't get this are people that are allergic to garlic. This is how Garlic Fries is done. The garlic sauce is made fresh and you can taste the spiciness of the fresh garlic yet it's mellow enough that you can enjoy its flavour. The fries were freshly fried and were real fluffy. They're good fries by itself but a whole new level with the garlic sauce. However, it would really be elevated if they can add a cheese component to it, whether it's sprinkled Parmesan or especially melted cheese. It would be AMAZING. Charge it at $8 and it'll still be a good deal. Overall- Very good burger and fries. Don't waste your time and money at In & Out. Can't wait to try their other food.

Don't walk, RUN to Tanquito! It is the best steak sandwich you will ever have! Incredible flavour, tender meat, beautiful crispy bread, the fries to die for! Just insane food served with love and passion! Love it, love it love it!!!

Google
We stumbled upon Tanguito while exploring San Francisco while on vacation. Tanguito is a fixed food truck with a nice seating area available to patrons. We don't have much exposure to Argentinean food but our meal was terrific. The proprietor is a hoot and very willing to discuss the food, his native Argentina, and life in general. He was very kind to our kids and patient with their questions. We enjoyed our time, our food and the company.

Google
This was a surprising find for us. We just came from Napa and we're spending a day in SF. We do what tourists do and went to the warf. We were getting hungry and came across this place on Google. We weren't sure what it was, but it said Argentinian food. Firstly it's a food truck with a covered patio that acts like a full service restaurant. They take your ordered at the truck and you sit in the back where they bring you the food. The staff is friendly and attentive and they care about the food and you. After everything we ate in napa, this was our best meal. We had a steak sandwich and a grilled sausage sandwich. Both were loaded with saute onions, peppers, and various savory flavors. The flavors were outstanding. We had planned to go for a sit down dinner later, but we literally sat there and were deciding if we should just order more food it was so good. For a tourist area and quality, the price was reasonable and worth it. If we are ever back in the area we would go back. Ps. Despite being a food truck they have access to a secret restroom. So full service location. $$

Google
Decided to try the Tanguito burger after reading the reviews and it did not disappoint! Extremely good value for money! A nice thick slab of beef patty with a beautiful crust and bursting with flavours with mushrooms, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and bell peppers! Meat was moist and still very juicy. Will definitely be back to try their other items on the menu!

Google
That was amazing. Even with picky kids, we were all thrilled with our food. And the workers were very friendly, my 10 year old mentioned that they were asking her how her food was, which she appreciated. Burgers were grilled to perfection. Empanadas were filled with flavor. The steak sandwich was dripping with juices, and chock full of toppings and steak. The garlic fries were very garlicky. Loved everything. If I wasn't so stuffed I'd order more.

Yelp
Found this place by chance. Grouped among other pop-up meal trucks. Provides outdoor seating at sidewalk and small covered patio shared with other vendors. All the sandwiches and plated meals are photographed on a poster. All look delicious and tempting but the burger caught my attention maybe because I've been craving for a juicy burger all weekend. I took it to go and ate it back at hotel. Was so excited to taste it since the entire walk back smelled so delicious especially the last minute order of garlic fries. Garlic fries and regular fries was surprisingly the same price at $6. Plenty to be shared. The burger was not to disappoint. Was much more than what I expected; extra large everything including the messy juices that ooozed out at every bite. One of my best burgers I have eaten! Definitely would love to come back and try others items in menu choices! Don't pass up this place whenever craving for a great juicy delicious burger! Service by friendly Chef was very pleasant.

Yelp
Very simple food truck with simple sitting area, no frills, order at the truck and they bring it out to you. Offers tasty meat plates from Argentina. The steaks are so great for the price. Burger is huge! Service is simple.

Yelp
As someone who loves Argentinian food and frequents them a lot, this is the best steak sandwich I've ever had! My wife got their steak and rice and she was also really impressed. The steak they use is high quality and they do not skimp with portions. The service is also amazing. This place is a gem!

Yelp
Super late service and pricey. It was unusually a hot day so maybe thats why but the person who takes our order was unfriendly. Had to wait for about 20minutes for our fries to come out and additional 10minutes for our orders to come out. Also super pricey for a food truck (two entrees and one fries came our almost 60bucks). The food was decent but not mind blowing. If service was faster, friendly and if price was more decent would've been 4/5

Yelp
Thank You, Yelpers, you lead me to Tanguito Argentinean Grill (... and this is why I use Yelp, for recommendations like this.) It's in Fisherman's Wharf, but not seafood focused, and is delicious, affordable, authentic Argentine cooking. The entire menu looks awesome, but I can never get past the empanadas - oh so good. Ham & Cheese, Beef, and Chicken are my personal favorites. When you go, ask for the owner, Steven / Esteban. He is the real deal, as is his grill. OBTW, Tanguito means "little tango," like the Argentine dance. Tanguito Argentinean Grill: Five-Stars, deserves 10.

Yelp
Cutest little place with an amazing seating area! We had the chicken empanadas for a snack after a long day of traveling and they hit the spot. We asked for extra chimichurri because it was that good. Please bring this to the east coast!

Yelp
Steak and salad my favorite here. Once in a blue moon the saffron rice. I'm a local and work near by so many of the places here aren't so great. The chicken and beef empanadas are flavorful and tasty. Another good choice. It's a food truck and they've have been here for years so don't expect 5 star ambiance but their food is worth every penny. Generous portions.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem at the pier, offering a delightful departure from the ordinary. My first venture into the world of Argentinian empanadas was nothing short of a taste bud adventure. We indulged in the beef, chicken, and Ham & cheese varieties, and each bite was an explosion of flavor. A word of caution, the chicken option carries a delightful spice kick! The portion sizes were just right, and the flavors left us craving for more. But the star of the show was undoubtedly the Tanguito burger - oh my goodness! The beef was incredibly tender and juicy, making it a worthy contender to replace your usual In & Out burger fix at the Pier. And to sweeten the deal, we concluded our meal with the dulce de leche crepes, where the arequipe was an absolute delight. The service was top-notch, and the owner's friendliness added to the overall charm of this place. As if it couldn't get any better, the prices were quite reasonable. Being a South Bay local, I can't wait to return for another round of culinary delights!"

Yelp
Best burger in my life. It beats up Ramsay burger for me. Chief and server is really kind tooo.

Yelp
We had the skirt steak plate. Was fantastic! Had the garlic fries too... great! I was impressed when we ordered to go and the chef asked how far we were going. He didn't want us to get soggy ass fries, and suggested to stay and eat in their patio. We stayed across the street, so it was all fresh and crisp! Give these guys a try...food was great and they care!

Yelp
My daughter's dance troupe recently starred in SF Trolley Dances for three full days so my girl needed a quick, delicious lunch that was walking distance from Crab Cove Plaza. We've always been a fan of empanadas so I made my way to this food truck. I picked up two chicken empanadas. The shredded chicken was blended with green olives in flaky dough. They were steaming hot but savory and filling.

Yelp
Best Argentinian food in the City Always a pleasure speaking with Steven, takes good care of me and my friends whenever we go.

Yelp
I just had the pleasure of trying Tanguitos for the first time! It's a hole in the wall truck restaurant serving delicious Argentinian food, just one block away from the main Fisherman's Wharf strip! From the outside, it doesn't look like much and I didn't know what to expect, but one bite into their popular empanadas, I was immediately impressed! The empanadas are only $6 but packed with authentic and juicy flavors! The outside seating is tucked away in the back giving you a cozy and peaceful feel away from the heavy crowds of Pier 39. I highly recommend you stop by and check this secret place out! Five stars all the way!

Yelp
A coworker who enjoys food just as much as I do recommended this place. He raved about their burger but I opted for the steak and rice plate and a chicken empanada instead. The food was just okay. The steak was tender and tough, more tough than tender. Some bites were well seasoned and other bites weren't. The rice had lots of good ingredients but it looked much better than it tasted. The chicken empanada was tasty... I'd get it again. I would give them another try, but I'd order a burger and fry like my coworker recommended. Customer service wasn't bad. Location is near Fisherman's Wharf. It's a food truck/cart with plenty of outdoor seating. There's metered parking in the area.

Yelp
The steak sandwiches were delicious. My kids really liked their empanadas. It had a good seating area in the back.

Yelp
I saw this on Check Please a LONG time ago. and granted - all we got here was a snack - a ham and cheese empanada. It was fine, nothing special... Service is gruff, they refused to throw away our extra cup (not from them) - I guess I get it, but it wasn't like we handed them a bunch of stuff to throw away (and we were paying customers).

Yelp
OMG this place has the best burgers! My wife and I both had the Tanguito Burger and it was the juiciest and tastiest burger I've had in a long time! You never expect this from a place that's a food truck with a couple of tables out front in kind of the touristy part of town. They also have some picnic tables in back. I shared an order of the garlic fries with my wife and they were pretty good. We had to dig to find the garlic and there was a very generous portion of the garlic sauce at the bottom. Since we were there my wife keeps saying we have to go back soon. Give their burgers a try, you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Giovanna T.

Yelp
Small place with just a few tables. You order at the window. Both plates were yummy and filling, but what I enjoyed the most was the service from who seemed to be the owner.

Captain E.

Yelp
Great food and service. Chef gave free fries and came out to talk to diners. Nice dining area.
google avatar

Maxine S.

Yelp
Lovely food. I loved the milanesa. Great crepe with dulce de leche. Partner loved his choripan. Service was good too and location. I think their fries are hand cut fresh. I prefer the fries plain than with garlic.

Yelp
I've been wanting to come here for awhile and when my Argentinian friend wanted to go, I knew she was the best person to go with to see how authentic this place was. Long story short, she was so happy that it reminded her of home! My favorite thing here was easily the empanadas. Of all the empanadas I've eaten in the Bay Area, this is easily one of the best I've had. They were freshly baked and packed with a ton of ham and cheese. If you come for one thing here, definitely don't miss out on the their empanadas! They are pretty big, so if you are eating your way around the area with a friend, one is plenty to split. We also ordered the milanesa. I thought this one was a little lacking in flavor and was leaning towards the dry side. The portion size was enormous! You got two giant pieces of milanesa, and again, one order split between two people is perfect. We ordered a side of the saffron rice, which was super unique in flavor. If you like your fries salty and crispy, they do them pretty well here too. We came during the lunch rush, and the wait time was around 30-40 minutes. It's a 3 man team working in the kitchen, and they were working hard to get the food out, so I didn't mind the wait. They were nice enough to check up on us and apologized for the longer than usual wait time. Overall, not a bad spot to grab an empanada, and I look forward to trying out some of their other popular menu items!

Yelp
Yep. Just like the other reviews said. Juicy, flavorful. GREAT sandwich ( #8 Filet Mignon )

Yelp
Amazing crew working here everybody is super sweet and patient. The food is so good. Best hot dog I've ever had in my entire life so far. They have a nice patio around the back that is so beautiful and they have plenty of seating. Pretty quick. Gets to you in under 10 mins.

Yelp
I love a locally owned hole-in-the-wall dive joint with awesome food and affordable prices. Finding this trifecta in San Francisco is now nearly impossible. Like any sane SF resident, I avoid Fisherman's Wharf like the plague, but for some reason, hubby and I found ourselves up in that area one afternoon. We wanted burgers, but the line at In 'n Out was way too long, so we looked to trusty Yelp, who found us Tanguito's. Now I say, In 'n Who? This is a walk-up counter that resembles a food truck without a truck, but there is a sweet dog friendly patio located right behind the order window. We both got the Tanguito burger, which was huge and only cooked well done, which I prefer. There was no blood dripping out of this burger... ick! We shared an order of garlic fries, which were thick-cut and loaded with so much garlic that there was zero chance Edward Cullen would be flying into my window that night. You know a place is good when you think about the food and talk about it for days. The price, portion, and deliciousness, combined with the dive-y ambience, make Tanguitos a hidden gem.

Yelp
The empanadas at this spot were really good Also the Chicken & Rice + steak sandwich tasted really authentic Great find in an otherwise touristy area
google avatar

J.G S.

Yelp
As a son of Argentineans, I know my way around empanadas. Tanguito's were the best I ever had in the Bay Area. Really pleasant surprise.

Allen Y.

Yelp
Probably the best burger I've ever eaten. Super juicy and thick. The owner is super nice and their food is great. Their Choripan (Chorizo & Pan (Bread) Sausage Sandwich) is just as good too in case you want Pork. If you need, you can ask for extra Chimichurri sauce on the side as well. They have several reviews on Youtube as well!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHQ6sxYIpys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1e62IbzPIcM

Yelp
This Argentinian spot was never really on my radar until I saw it on an old check please episode, so I found my way here for lunch one day to try out their steak and their empanadas. The steak and rice plate looked and smelled delicious, but was actually a bit underwhelming. It was quite a big portion, a bit greasy but that's not too unexpected for a steak and rice dish. The rice had lots of saffron and peppers and mushrooms so I was expecting it to be super flavorful but it didn't really hit the mark, I think it needed more salt. The steak and chimichurri was not bad but also a little under-seasoned. It came with a couple pieces of plantain though which I enjoyed for some variety. The empanada was definitely better, with a decently flaky pastry, although I wish there was a little more pastry (but that's mostly a personal preference). They definitely don't skimp on the filling though, it was a surprisingly hefty empanada. We got the ham and cheese which was good, I wouldn't mind coming back to try some of the other empanadas.

Martin A.

Yelp
The most authentic Argentinian food I have tried. Can't go wrong with anything on their menus. The empanadas are great, burgers are so tasty, sandwiches... Great service and staff too. Highly recommended

Yelp
Delicious food truck food! In the of COVID-19 Shelter-in-Place age there is not much foodie stuff one can do in San Francisco, or anywhere for that matter. However, on one of our socially distanced masked face afternoon doggie walks, we discovered a new place to pick up food to go! Tanguito is an Argentine food truck parked on Jones, between Beach and Jefferson streets. The owner is a very nice man who makes wonderful food in this little space. I first started with his fried sweet plantains, but then moved on to his delicious empanadas (his beef empanadas are my favorite) and a couple of other items. For the last few weeks, we have been stopping here twice a week and indulging ourselves, to go of course! Give the empanadas a shot next time you are in the Wharf!

Lewis B.

Yelp
great portions, great prices and great service here. garlic fries are unmatched and they usually keep vegetarian empanadas on deck! Highly recommend, especially since the wharf area mostly only has overpriced seafood
google avatar

Danna E.

Yelp
Yummy Argentine Empanadas @ Tanguito! Been wanting to try this out, but the first time going here during pandemic, failed due to their hours of service.....My first time here during fleet week and there was a short line, but long wait. There are seating available next to food truck so this is a plus for tired feet. Had an enjoyable experience from waiting to engaging with the friendly staff and finally savoring the empanadas (only came here for this!) Other Argentinian comfort food served, but they're known for the empanada--which are pretty big! Cash only!
google avatar

Diane S.

Yelp
Love this place I got the steak and fries. Mom and pop. I found out about this place from my friend Todd who loves their empanada. They even have tables. I can't remember if I used cash or card. Really near the warf lots of parking nearby. The owner / cook is so friendly, we also got the burger the portion was huge. A hidden sf gem and authentic Argentina food!
google avatar

Ivonne J.

Yelp
We got the milanesa and garlic fries and the beef and rice. Food or overly greasy, lacks flavor too. For the price it should at least taste bette.

Ben G.

Yelp
Found as our first meal in SF- great little stop for a late lunch. We split two empanadas and some garlic fries- the fries were super fresh and were heavy on garlic- we love garlic so it was cool but I could understand that it might be off putting for some. Super friendly owner (?). Definitely don't let the first impression fool you- the food was great (they have signs about spending money on flavor rather than chipped paint- it's pretty spot on. Overall a great light meal.
google avatar

Dewaine C.

Yelp
Had a chicken empanada and a ham and cheese empanada. Absolutely delicious. Make this a stop on your visit to San Francisco.
google avatar

Troy M.

Yelp
This dude's fillet mingon is on point. The empanadas are kinda salty though as traditional Argentine empanadas go but not excessively either. They come in various tasty af iterations. Better than El Porteño if you ask me. There's seating in the back that people don't seem to know about but it's covered for fog, rain, or sun protection and somewhat the wind. I like this place very much and was happy to see them survive the pandemic.
google avatar

Dee M.

Yelp
Best meals of the trip! Nice, quiet little location of the beaten path with a covered seating area. We stopped by for lunch and had the awesome empanadas they had in the case - ham & cheese, and corn & cheese. The ham and cheese was very crispy on the outside and cheesy on the inside. The corn was a surprise; it was delicious, sweet, creamy, and very cheesy. The crust stayed crispy, it didn't get soggy! My husband liked the ham so much he ordered one to go to eat cold for breakfast. We went back for dinner and ordered the Neapolitan, steak & rice, and a huge crepe. The Neapolitan was awesome! It's like a schnitzel with a piece of ham, tomato, and melted cheese on top. Great recommendation by the very friendly owner. The garlic fries stayed crispy the entire meal! Fresh chopped garlic made the super crispy fries even better. The steak was fantastic, very well seasoned and tender. The rice was excellent with bits of mushroom and peppers.
google avatar

Sebastian V.

Yelp
Choripan was really good. Super fresh so be ready to wait a bit if you're really hungry but definitely coming back when I'm back at the wharf.
google avatar

Tiffany C.

Yelp
These are the best empanadas I've ever eaten in my life. The corn cheese is my favorite. Hubby loves the steak sandwich too. We eat this whenever we go to fisherman's wharf.
google avatar

elita k.

Yelp
Pretty good fries and well stuffed empanadas. You get enough food for the little amount of money spent. It has outdoor seating and the the food comes out quick.
google avatar

Fabian C.

Yelp
This place is delicious and super cozy. The decor literally reminds me of Buenos Aires. The outdoor seating area was very spacious and spaced out. The outdoor seating area was slightly covered enough to protect you from the wind which was a huge plus. My grandfather who was from Argentina passed away on Saturday so I felt it was fitting to take my wife and daughter to eat here to pay homage to my grandfather Nestor on Valentines day. Everything we ordered was delicious but the highlight for me was the Choripan and the ham and cheese empanada. If you love Argentina and a variety of meats & steaks, I highly recommend this place :) -Adios Abuelo

Sofia R.

Yelp
I've been meaning to try Tanguito for a while and dove at the chance to get some take-out! It's recommended to call ahead versus ordering at the window to save time. My order took about 20 or so minutes. I decided to try the Tanguito Burger. Really juicy, definitely meant to be eaten right away. The patty alone is impressive in thickness and in flavor. Overall, I really enjoyed this. The only things I have to say against this burger is that it was slightly too salty and that the bun became soggy very easily. I'm definitely excited to try more from Tanguito!
google avatar

Wayne Z.

Yelp
This place is legit. They know how to grill meats better than most restaurants in the city. I got the half steak and chicken salad which come in decent size. Highly recommended in the Fisherman's Wharf area. Not a tourist trap.
google avatar

Mukta D.

Yelp
This is hands down my favorite burger place in the Bay Area. And this is coming from a vegetarian. The burgers here are delicious - juicy, cheesy, filling but not too greasy, very flavorful. I've tried a lot of veggie and garden burgers from fast food chains to speciality burgers, but nothing beats this hole in the wall near fisherman's wharf in San Francisco. The service was swift and burgers were reasonably priced.
google avatar

Vincent W.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic!!! Owner (chef) is super friendly and nice. The portion is huge and the food is so delicious !! Def recommend chicken sandwich and the beef on rice

Kevin D.

Yelp
Love the food here. My go to is the steak sandwich and garlic fries. T-burger is also amazing. Great little joint for Argentinean food.
google avatar

Samantha C.

Yelp
This is the second time stopping at Tanguito, both times being for their delicious empanadas! At $5 each for quality empanadas, stopping here is a no brainer. It's a great alternative to the touristy Fisherman's Warf scene. My personal favorite is the beef empanada!
google avatar

Ngoc P.

Yelp
Yummy yummy in my tummy. I was looking for cheap eats in SF and this place came up and though it's a bit far but I made the trek to this place, and I wasn't disappointed! Prices are relatively cheap, the food is delicious and generous. It's a small place. You order in the front which looks like a food truck then you sit in the patio area. I ordered the steak sandwich and my friend got the chicken with saffron rice. Those were mouthwatering, but his was a wee bit better than mine. My steak sandwich didn't disappoint and they hooked it up with the meat. So, they don't scrimp on the protein. It's kinda far from me but I know I'll be coming back for more!
