Great coffee, nice ambience, and the perfect start to my Friday morning.
My friends and I are in college and we've been going to this monthly MSA tradition at our school called "Fajr and Philz" in which we attend morning prayer and then hit Philz Coffee right after. Anyways, we kind of got tired of Philz and the whole group thing, so my friends and I decided why don't we just go to prayer on our own, and hit a new coffee place that we've never had before after, and we can do this thing once week. So at 7 in the morning on Friday, in 45 degrees Fahrenheit, my buddy found Tanner's nearby and we decided to give it a shot.
We walked in and were greeted by a very comforting ambience that oozed warmth and a homey feel. Having grown up in Southern California surfing the beaches of the beautiful coast, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was a surf-themed coffee shop. I order a vanilla iced latte and an everything bagel with cream cheese and man did it hit the spot. I'm a fan of stronger tasting roasts because I like to taste the coffee, and the latte here offered just that. It was the perfect blend of sweet, but not too sweet, coffee-tasting, but not too strong, and perfectly creamy. The bagel was fantastic as well. There was only one worker there and she was taking orders AND making the coffee/toasting bagels/giving pastries all by herself. Impressively enough, the coffee and bagel came out really fast. Shoutout to that barista fr.
The seating was very comfortable and welcoming, and we all brought our work to do. We sat there for a solid 3 hours, got our work done for school and had some great conversation with other customers there. You don't see much of that these days, talking to strangers. It was a nice breath of fresh air in this age of the exodus of face-to-face social interaction. My friends and I met a writer there who was writing a piece for the New Yorker and it was really cool to hear his ideas.
When we left back to campus, my friend forgot his iPad and got worried it might have been stolen. So he called up the place, and it turns out the wonderful barista who was juggling everything, saw that he left it, took it behind the counter, and kept it safe until he could pick it up. I wish I knew her name because she really made our morning.
All-in-all this place is the start of a tradition with my boys. We laughed, worked, and reminisced here, and it was an experience that made my day. It reminded me that it's little moments like this that are seemingly nothing special, but in reality are the moments you remember in your life. Thank you to Tanner's.
