"The down-to-earth name, ‘Shokudo’ or ‘cafeteria’, was chosen because the restaurant aims to be one where people can drop in casually, while ‘Tanoshi’ (from tanoshii, ‘fun’) reflects the fun atmosphere created by Hirata, who handles service, and the chef. Indeed, it’s fun just to peruse the extensive menu. The inventive items, which weave together Japanese, Western and Chinese influences, offer no end of variety. Abalone-like shrimp croquettes and Chinese-style fried chicken-wing tips amply exemplify the spirit of Shokudo Tanoshi." - Michelin Inspector

This katsudon restaurant offers a simple and satisfying experience without trying to be more than it needs to be. The menu is straightforward, and the food arrives quickly, making it an easy place to stop by for a casual meal. The katsudon itself is comforting and familiar, with a balance that feels consistent rather than surprising. The shop is on the smaller side, so seating can feel a bit tight, especially during busy hours. It’s not uncomfortable, but it does give the place a compact, no-frills feeling. The atmosphere is practical rather than relaxed, clearly designed for quick turnover. One small drawback is that the staff tend to speak quite fast, and depending on the timing, it can be a little hard to catch what they’re saying, especially if you’re not used to the pace. Still, service is efficient and moves along smoothly once your order is placed. Overall, this is the kind of place you choose for reliability. It may not stand out for any single feature, but it delivers a steady, uncomplicated meal that does what you expect. If you’re looking for a quick katsudon and don’t mind a tight space or fast-paced service, this restaurant fits that role well.

A small little hole in the wall that happened to be a 13 minute walk from our hotel. We thought we could order from whatever we saw in the pictures but it’s a limited menu tapas style. The omakase looks soo good so next time we’ll try to book ahead of time. We had the fried chicken with soy garlic, so flavorful and deboned on most parts. Katsu don was on point, small portion for dinner and super orange yolk. It was a great mini meal. Brown edamame with garlic chili, great a bit overly salty which is totally fine with me since I was drinking. Lastly the seared salmon butter soy which was their special and surprisingly amazed me as well. Not fishy, very fresh was a seared taste to it. I ordered the chu-hi, and hebesu gin soda which both were amazing drinks. Definitely would come, English friendly. Why isn’t there a line out the door?!

If you are lucky enough to snag a seat, you are in for an experience. The owner was very welcoming and offered up suggested pairing of food and drinks. The food was great! I will definitely come back! I want to try the omakase dinner (must reserve ahead of time).

Awesome place to eat! We came in the morning hours around 10:30AM and had the special katsu don which was unbelievable! Ginger & Kiwi soda was great, miso soup was so good on a cold day. English menu and English speaking owner made it super easy to order. Would absolutely come here again!

We had the BEST experience here! Kai, the owner, was incredible. The food was amazing - we got the katsudon, chicken wings, and stir fry. We also did the sake tasting and he was so great about explaining the origin / difference of each. Only around 10 seats here but well worth it if you have to wait. 10/10!!!

Literally one of THE best meals we had in Osaka! We ordered a total of 5 dishes to share and everything was delicious, especially the katsudon (egg was amazing!!). Drinks were also very tasty, I truly can’t say enough great things about this place. The owner speaks perfect English and was very welcoming!! HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

Google
This was one of my favourite meals in my two weeks in Japan. Everything we ate tasted incredible and was made with care, but the katsu-don was top notch. I've never tasted anything like it, especially for such a simple dish, and have dreamt about it since. This place is tiny and closes early.... Don't miss out.

Google
Tried the Sanda Pork Katsu Don and it was delicious! They have an English menu available, and speak quite fluently. My only complaint is the menu doesn't detail ingredients and I hate onions lol, which my dish had, but whatever. Drink variety is also good and tasty. Would return.

Yelp
Its a cozy nice place with a great guy who serves and cooks. He spoke English very well but the main thing is the food was delicious! Best katsu-don I've ever had and the steak was amazing so tender and juicy. We will definitely come back on our next trip to japan.

Yelp
What a wonderful place in Osaka! On my last day there, after a very late night (lol), I was looking for some comfort food. I didn't want to stray too far from my hotel and Tanoshi was a few blocks away. The restaurant is small with a few tables and I believe a bar sitting. There were 4 of us and we were able to be seated immediately. They had various tapas item, but I really wanted a katsudon (katsu rice bowl). They also ask to choose rice bowl size and initally I wanted LOTS of rice so I chose the medium and the owner asked me if I was sure? He told me it was ALOT. I opted for the smaller one. LOL. And he was right. The small one was perfect size. As for the katsudon, the sauce had a little sweetness to it that I liked. The katsu was pretty decent and the egg was cooked to perfection. I also had a miso soup (it was raining that day), which also was perfect with the meal. The service was also amazing. The owner was working that day and he chit chatted with us a little about the restaurant. If you are looking for a quick meal, I would definitely recommend that you try Tanoshi.

Yelp
The best tapas food and drinks I've had in Japan. Everything we tried on the menu was so flavorful and delicious. Great place to go for your first time in Osaka. They have sake tasting and the chef's English is a plus too!
