Small, spirited ramen shop turning out rich tonkotsu, spicy miso, and comforting donburi with anime-splashed charm. Consistently praised in recent local reviews for depth of broths and friendly service.

Google
Food was delicious and service on point. The setting felt a little crowded (even though we were 1 of 3-4 groups) but that was minor not enough to keep us from definitely patronizing them again.

Google
Ramen was tasty on its own, but a few dashes of the spicy sauce really elevated the broth. Very satisfying! Staff was friendly and the decor is a lot of fun. Come check it out.

Google
Super delicious family owned restaurant. Ordered salmon onigiri (salmon rice ball), tonkotsu ramen, seafood ramen and hot green tea. Tonkotsu had a nice mix of noodles, mushrooms and ginger with a really nice soft boiled egg and two good size pieces of pork. The seafood ramen came with generous portions of shrimp, mussels and scallops with a nice mix of vegetables and noodles. The salmon onigiri tasted really fresh and came with a delicious side of a spicy mayo sauce for dipping. The restaurant is nicely decorated with a whimsical mix of traditional Japanese artwork and manga including some fun One Piece posters. Staff was really nice and welcoming and the waiter was exceptional. Will definitely go back again.

Food was quick, savory, and server was kind and attentive. Overall a great ambiance which I would recommend to anyone!

Google
This place has the most authentic Japanese food in this area! We love everything that we've tried from here. The chicken curry is our favorite, but we love the ramen too. Everyone here has always been so friendly, professional, and bubbly. The few mistakes that have been made in the years I've ordered here have always been addressed to my satisfaction and handled professionally. I also love the atmosphere and decor. I can't recommend this restaurant enough!

Bob Fullick

Google
Oh yeah, this is the stuff. Grilled chicken ramen, spicy chili ramen, spring rolls, all so so good.

Bethany Tousley

Google
Honestly one of the best bowls of ramen I've had in a long while! I got the seafood bowl while my hubby got the chicken. Both were absolutely phenomenal. We had seaweed salad with it as well. Will definitely return!

Google
Nice tiny place hidden in the shopping center. If you want great ramen, this is the place. Update 3 years has gone by and it is still fabulous. A real gem.

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time this week as we just relocated here. Ramen is my #1 favorite food so we had to try to top rated in the area. Here's my opinion... I ordered the tonkotsu ramen. It had a different smell than your usual tonkotsu & didn't taste like any other tonkotsu I've ever had. It wasn't terrible but it didn't make my list of favorites, that's for sure. There was more pickled ginger than anything else & it turned everything, including the meat, pink and just overpowered the flavor of everything else. I will say that they do put a good amount of meat in their ramen. Also the service wasn't bad.

Yelp
I don't understand why people have rated the ramen here as really good. The spicy miso ramen hardly had any flavor of miso, just the heat/spice and a slight flavor. The shoyu ramen was ok but the meat that came with it was very very dry that my daughter refused to eat it. I ordered the rice used for onigiri was neither Japanese rice or calrose rice, and was no substantial. If you're Japanese, half Japanese, or grew up eating Japanese food, don't come here. Very disappointed. Also, they charge for green tea. Green tea should always be served free in any Japanese restaurant. We're visiting the VA for Spring break. TLDR: don't expect authentic or close to authentic Japanese flavors here. If you're thinking of checking this place out, Don't! Find a better place out just go for Chinese take out because it would have been with my money than this place.

Yelp
Tanpopo Ramen....what can I say??? This has been a comfort zone for Sophia and myself since we first stopped by in 2019 or so. We've never had a bad dish here. No matter if we were with a group of friends or just the two of us, each visit has been satisfying. And this one was no different. After checking out a movie earlier, we headed here for lunch. At the time, foot traffic was minimal but did pick up gradually after we got seated. We were ready to order after a few minutes. For appetizers, we chose the Age Tofu, one of our favorites. The tofu was slightly crunchy and had enough sauce to add flavor. For the main entree, I ordered chicken karedon which is Japanese curry. Just like before, this dish hit the mark. The chicken cutlet was cooked perfectly along with the curry and rice. Everything came together in the end. Sophia chose her regular dish, chicken katsu ramen, and gave thumbs up. Well, there you have it. Another visit in the books that satisfied both our hunger needs. You know we'll be back here as always :)

Yelp
I read this is a really delicious ramen place up in Hampton / Newport News. It's in a big shopping center by a Wawa. Easy to find! Close to 664 and 64. It's got an okay amount of seating. You could probably get one large party in there but you'll be taking up most of the place. You pay by credit card. I ordered the miso ramen! Really good. I like the broth. Tons of corn which I really enjoyed. The charchu was cut thick. A little bit of a Chinese flavor more than a Japanese flavor but who am I to complain? It was a nice big bowl of ramen. I was pretty happy with it. What I really enjoyed is at the table, they have garlic and chili oil. So no complaints there! Food came out fast and it was pretty good! I don't remember seeing the kids menu but I do remember seeing appetizers and some other Japanese selectables. They have beer! Didn't get to enjoy because technically, I was still on the clock! Definitely worth stopping in.

Yelp
After visiting the President's Heads and some thrifting in Williamsburg, my friend and I were craving ramen. It was a cloudy cold day and it was perfect for some warm noodly goodness. I didn't mind driving a little further away for something highly rated. Tanpopo Ramen (which I wonder if it's a reference to the charming ramen movie, Tampopo) is located in a strip mall with plenty of parking out front. The decor is super cute with tons of anime and art lining the walls. We were seated immediately and given two menus. My friend and I ordered the kara-age to share. The crispiness of this chicken was amazing and I loved the sauce that came with it. She ordered the spicy miso ramen and enjoyed how spicy it was. I got the tonkotsu ramen. We both agreed that the ramen noodles were incredible. The right amount of chewiness. I could not stop eating those noodles even after I was full. I wish my tonkotsu broth was a lot richer and thicker. Although the broth fell short, the noodles made up for it. I also enjoyed all the goodies inside. Our waiter was kind and didn't rush us out of the restaurant which was nice. We had to find him when we wanted the check. We had a good experience at Tanpopo Ramen.

Yelp
My first time here and I really enjoyed the friendly and attentive service. I ordered the teriyaki chicken but next time I should really try their ramen.

Yelp
Great service, delicious ramen and I love that you can order double noodles. The chicken katsu was delicious and everyone was super nice. Loved it!

Yelp
Was in the mood for ramen and yelp led me here! I love the vibes of this place. Polaroids of customers surround the walls and they were playing 90s/2000s hip hop and r&b. I loved it! We got the fried gyoza to start which were nothing out of the ordinary but still good. Now for the ramen...it definitely hit the spot and this is what I came for! I got the spicy miso ramen with all the toppings. The kick was just right and the broth was delicious. They also do military discount which was great!
google avatar

Wendy F.

Yelp
Had the Tonkatsu Ramen and fried Gyoza, it was all tasty! Food came out fairly quickly and was perfect to warm up for a colder day. Cute set up with lots of decorations up. Service and staff was great!

Yelp
I kept hearing good things about Tanpopo so I decided to give it a try while my friend was in town and I'm glad we did. It's a very casual atmosphere heavily decorated with Ghibli and One Piece figures and posters which were cute. Our server was very kind, personable and helpful. A very low key, comfortable place. The food was very good. My only complaint was the pork was a bit dry, but it didn't stop me from finishing my whole bowl. Very reasonably priced as well the three of us got out of there under $60. Will absolutely be going back!
google avatar

James L.

Yelp
We love the ramen here. Every dish is amazing and the service is always quick and friendly. I would recommend this place for anyone that what's a casual date night or dinner with friends. We even love getting take out and eating the ramen at home.

Yelp

Yelp
Authentic and really tasty. Good food, good service, good atmosphere, good value. Had ramen, dumplings and edamame. Perfect.

Yelp
What was ordered Age Tofu Ika Geso Karaage Spicy Miso Ramen Gyudon Case when the appetizers outshined the main dishes. The fried tofu had the authentic potato starch texture and dashi sauce with it. Tasted great. The fried squid leg batter was light and the squid tasted fresh and flavorful; however, not a fan of yum yum sauce with it. I think I rather stick with Kewpie Japanese mayo for the dip. The spicy Miso Ramen tasted watery and different from the past visits. The "thinly sliced beef" was thicker than should be for gyudon and I didn't really like the medley from it. Not really sure how I felt about the taste of it, but I did manage to finish it. Personally having sukiya gyudon frequently in Asia during my stay there, I'd say not really great gyudon here. Personally I still am happy to have this place for the taste overall is good, but not near the quality I'd want.

Yelp
Good miso soup, great service the noodles had good texture the pork was tender, soup was spiced with good flavor

Yelp
Always looking for a good place with genuine delicious ramen. This is THE PLACE!! Quick cooking times and bold flavors. Staff is very friendly. Never disappoints!!
google avatar

Jordan G.

Yelp
My friend and I have been here at least two times, and the food is AMAZING!!! Sure, ramen is not for everyone, but the portions and flavors here are unmatched in the industry. I have mainly stuck with the chicken katsu ramen, and I love the taste of how things in the bowl blend together. The place is a bit small, and I'm not a huge fan of the counter setup as you walk in. But, the place has a lot of character and nostalgia. The service is quick and the staff are all very nice and friendly. They can help you make choices if you aren't sure what you want to try first when visiting.

Yelp
YUM! Small but Great Modern Atmosphere with Awesome Food at a Reasonable Price! Service was fast and Friendly. Would recommend for first time Ramen experience
google avatar

Yelp
Shoyu ramen was wonderful. Daughter and I ate lunch. She had the Veggie ramen and the peas were crisp and delicious in her dish. Service was polite and prompt. Five out of five.

Javar V.

Yelp
Just walking into the establishment has insane vibes and the decoration in there is amazing. The staff is so friendly an answer any questions you have. The food is fresh and has so much flavor and the price is amazing as-well.

Yelp
Tanpopo Ramen is a small but cozy place. Oddly enough, I didn't have ramen. A last minute decision was made to get the Gyudon instead, which did not disappoint. It was delicious! A huge bowl which was enough to take leftovers home. Will definitely be back next time I'm in the area to try the ramen.

Amaru K.

Yelp
So this is my usual ramen spot, however the past few Uber eats deliveries I've ordered have been missing my drink! Please do better about reading your tickets! I am a chef myself it's important to give the DRINK to wash down the food. If this happens again I will not patronize anymore. Good day!
google avatar

Jennifer D.

Yelp
Great ramen and ambiance! My husband and I enjoyed dinner here and really appreciated the peaceful ambiance. We tried the fried squid and both had bowls of the tonkotsu ramen. Everything was delicious but the portions were on the smaller side for dinner. The menu included several different types of ramen as well as a few other dishes. They also serve a few different types of bottled beer such as sapporo.
google avatar

Lai Wun C.

Yelp
Tanpopo is such a hidden gem! I came here 2 times and both of my ramen are delicious! The prices are fair and the atmosphereis warm and . The waitress served me both times and she was quick and respectful. So far I've tried the Tonkotsu raman and Chicken Katsu ramen. The noodles is firm, which I prefer how my noodles are, and all the ingredients are always fresh. The tonkotsu has a rich broth that is very flavorful and thicc. The chicken katsu is super crispy and the broth is clear yet rich. I started working nearby so I'll get more chances to come here, amd will definitely come back!

Yelp
Food is not good. I wish these places can stop taking people's money in exchange for NASTY FOOD

Yelp
Solo date night could not have been any better. Tanpopo ramen has the absolute best customer service and atmosphere. I felt so at peace. It was a nice rainy day that set the mood for a warm tempting bowl of ramen and Tanpopo did not come to disappoint. I had the shrimp tempura ramen and it came with 3 large Jumbo shrimp tempura coming out of the side. I did not know the portions would be this big. I also ordered the katsudon (I think, I'm not familiar with the name) because I order with my heart instead of my stomach size and left stuffed. With a happy belly and a hand full of leftover I was so satisfied.

Jean S.

Yelp
I couldn't believe that we missed Tanpopo Ramen. It has been there since 2019 and it's just 10 mins from our house! Food and service were great ( our waiter was great too (wink wink ;)). My husband and I both ordered tonkutso ramen and mango & matching mochi ice cream for dessert . Too bad I didn't take a photo, but I will next time :)
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
For the price and the area it's pretty solid ramen. I got the chicken katsu, while the chicken was spot on the broth was not super filling and tasty, and however they marinated their egg was a little much for me. For a place in Newport News this is a solid 4 but in places like NYC this would be 2.5/3. If you're craving ramen in Newport News though definitely check it out. Mochi ice creams were nothing special, the red bean was tasty but the green tea tasted like perfume. My waiter even warned me about it but then suggested it when I asked which I should get? Veggie gyoza was crispy and tasty though! The low prices and ambiance of the place inside really make it a great date spot. Will come back the next time I have a craving for NYC ramen lol!!!

Yelp
If you are familiar with CoCo Curry House Ichibanya Japan. Tanpopo is as good as it gets ten toes down.

Yelp
Food is great! I love this place. Service is great and I happy I found a place that serves katsu curry!

Yelp
Food was lovely, Atmosphere was great and the staff was friendly and attentive. Will be retuning in the future.

Yelp
Between the three of us, we ordered a chicken katsu ramen, a tonkatsu ramen and a chicken katsu curry rice plate. Both good and service were excellent. We all left feeling satisfied with a warm fuzzy feeling especially with the rain outside!

Yelp
This place is super cute inside. You can order to go or sit inside. There are two seating areas, one had mostly 2 tops and the other areas had tables of 4 or 6. We waited about 5 min in the lobby to be seated and they gave us a takeout menu to look over while we waited. They offer a variety of apps, ramen and rice dishes with dessert. My husbands coworker recommended it. It's located in Newmarket area of NN in a shopping center. Our waitress was prompt to get our drink orders and food order and checked on us 2 or 3 times to make sure we didn't need anything. We had gyoza and spring rolls for apps which came out within a few min or each other. Then we had a seafood ramen, spicy miso ramen and tonkatsu ramen. All were filled with veggies and the selected protein.
google avatar

Mary-Ann L.

Yelp
I really wish I could give 4 or 5 stars as most reviewers have given. Actually I was slightly disappointed having so looking forward to try Tanpopo out, even recommended to a friend and we both trekked a long way from VA Beach to try Tanpopo out. I ordered the Tonkatsu ramen. First of all the broth tasted like it had fish sauce in it, was on the salty side. The ingredients were underwhelming - the pork was bland, No Korean fish cakes? No bean sprouts or scallions? The broth wasn't even piping hot which made the noodles room temperature at best.
google avatar

Mansi B.

Yelp
Came here on a Tuesday evening and it was nice; clean, fast service and tasty! We had come for a family member's birthday and they give you a free ramen bowl if you show your ID and it's your birthday! We got the veggie gyoza and then vegetable ramen. The vegetable ramen was good, LOTS of veggies, and flavorful broth. I am knocking down one star because the veggie gyoza tasted a bit fishy? to me? and it sort of ruined my appetite (I'm a vegetarian) but my husband and sister didn't think this was the case! I would come back for the ramen for sure :)

Devin H.

Yelp
Great service and amazing authentic food! Recommend the tempura app and the Tonkotsu Ramen! Not to mention the ambiance is awesome

Vondrake W.

Yelp
This spot isn't anything spectacular. It will do when in a rush and if you a close by the restaurant. I wouldn't drive out of my way for it. The ramen didn't taste any differently than what I've made myself from the store. I was hungry again 30 minutes after I finished the entree.
google avatar

Vanessa S.

Yelp
I'm a sucker for a cute cultural restaurant. Frfr they understood the assignment. Period sis. The anime scenes on the walls and dimmed lights are suck a vibe. The food...Bi$h they was trying to put me in a trance. We ordered everything to get a feel and it checked out and for cheap. The last time I had good nigiri was in Hawaii and they definitely did a great job. They definitely did that purr. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Tyler L.

Yelp
The restaurant itself is well decorated with anime posters & figurines. We ordered shrimp shumai, which had a crisp outside with a hot tasty inside. Our main entree was the Grilled Chicken Ramen with extra meat and noodles. Our server Christian was very attentive and made sure we had what we needed. This is a popular grub spot among locals and college students. If you're looking for a lively atmosphere paired with good food and service, check out Tanpopo Ramen. Again, thanks for the great service Christian!

Yelp
Great service, cute store, and pretty decent ramen! My friends and I decided to stop by and I got the spicy miso ramen. I enjoyed the al dente ramen noodles and appreciated the bamboo shoots and seaweed pieces. The spicy minced pork was pretty solid but I felt like the miso flavors were a little lacking. It almost seemed like dan dan noodles with a broth. It was still good though! Just not what I had expected. My friend's Tonkotsu ramen looked pretty good too so I definitely want to try that the next time. The store is decorated with cute Japanese style cat posters and anime characters! The also hang traditional red lanterns so I really liked the vibes. The service was fantastic and they even gave us little candy bags cause it was close to Valentines day!
google avatar

Colby C.

Yelp
We don't eat a lot of ramen but this place was delicious. Environment was also super cute.
google avatar

D M.

Yelp
Great ramen!! The best soy marinated eggs I've ever had. I always get tonkatsu ramen with extra eggs. I do wish they used pork belly like most traditional tonkatsu ramen has, unfortunately they use pork loin which tends to be dry but the broth and eggs make up for it. Their harumaki is eh okay, but the karaage is pretty good.

Yelp
After many missed opportunities I finally made it to Tanpopo Ramen. The family owned ramen spot is one of the best rated on the peninsula and I have been wanting to check it out. I arrived on a Saturday evening and the collection of vehicle parked in the parking lot only in front of the restaurant with several people waiting for take out is a good sign. The restaurant has all of the stereotypical almost requisite Asian-style lanterns but it also has a fun vibe with lucky cat banners and framed 'One Piece' cartoon images on the walls as well as Polaroid images of past patrons neatly displayed in the walls. I ordered the katsu ramen and when it arrived it was worth the wait. The broth was piping hot with just the right amount of spice and seasoning. The chicken cutlet was fried just right not too greasy. Bottom line I will return with more people to enjoy this local gem!

Yelp
About a 1-1.5: Oh, man, Tanpopo - I've been wanting to try you guys out for a while, considering you've won 'Best Ramen' on various lists! We managed to stop by for a late lunch, and we ordered the following: +Gyu Don - sliced marinated beef, onion, red ginger, and onions, with rice and scallions - the rice out-ratio-ed the beef; the beef was dried out, overly sweet, and there was just no juice to it for the rice to sop up +Tonkotsu Ramen - pork-bone broth with tonkotsu base, chashu pork, bamboo shoots, fishcake, wood ear mushrooms, red ginger, shredded scallions, egg, and nori - the broth was flavorless, thin, and not at all the creaminess and thickness that I expected, considering this should be simmering all day; the noodles were overcooked, which was a huge no-no for me Staff were super welcoming and friendly, and I really liked the various anime figurines that were used as decor on their shelves. Not sure if I went on an off day, but we just were not fans! Glad I was able to try them out, but would not return. +overcooked noodles +not-so-great ramen/broth +avoid the Gyu Don - super dried out +friendly staff +cute decor +plenty of parking in the plaza lot

Rachel P.

Yelp
This spot was so unexpectedly hip! The atmosphere is cool and the food is fantastic. If you feel a cold coming on I recommend getting their spicy miso ramen (get it to go of course). I've been able to evade sickness a few times because of this soup. The other appetizers I've had there are also delicious.
google avatar

Ben B.

Yelp
Pros: -Wait staff incredibly kind, helpful, and attentive -Pork gyoza, age tofu, tonkotsu ramen, and chicken kotsu ramen were all delicious! -Food came quickly -Environment was relaxing -The walls were covered in photos of people who had eaten there and the little quotes they left Cons: -None! Consensus: Overall an amazing ramen spot, I would definitely come again!

Matthew S.

Yelp
Great Ramen. Don't worry about ordering a 5 for spice. It is not over powering if you are used to spice. I definitely recommend this place if you love ramen.
google avatar

Yelp
The people are always welcoming and the food is always so good. It is a casual place, good for meeting friends.

Yelp
This has always been my go to ramen place since I been in Virginia. The inside is aesthetically pleasing with its Japanese pop culture decor. The servers are always friendly when we come in. And I haven't had a bad meal yet. This was my first time getting the seafood ramen and it was tasty. I wish there were more muscles in it. I only found 2 pieces. But there was still a good amount of seafood to ramen ratio to satisfy my appetite.
