Long-running, family-operated and now takeout-focused, Tan’s pairs Chinese staples with a beloved Indonesian menu. Tallahassee Magazine spotlighted its nasi goreng, and recent community chatter confirms it’s still going strong in 2025.

This place is unreal. I am a long-time Tan’s fan since they opened. I’m so glad the Indonesian food is back! The full Indonesian menu is incredible, and these are things I have not found anywhere else in the U.S. Even in Indonesia, it is hard to find these regional dishes without visiting the regions themselves. Everything we ordered was full of flavor and delicious. Huge portions and generous amounts of protein. The spice in the sambal is no joke! Of course, all the Chinese food we got was still delicious as well. Overall, this is still such a unique place, and we are so lucky to have it in Tallahassee!

Google
I haven't found a good Malaysian place here in Orlando. Hopefully you find a good place. With this said took a trip to Tallahassee and found this little gem. So. If you’re ever up in Tallahassee, Tan’s Asian Cafe has expanded their menu and they have Indonesian rendang. A little taste of Indonesian cuisine! Delicious

The lady at the counter was super friendly. The meat and tendon in the beef noodle soup needed more time for flavor and tenderness. Some pieces were still a little tough. Chicken Curry and Shrimp in Lobster sauce were edible but I wouldn’t order again. I’d make my own rice next time. Plenty of parking. This was a take out order so I’m not sure if they were open for sit down. No matter, not really a date night kind of place. I’d order the Taiwanese Beef and Tendon Noodle Soup again to see if they were just having an off night.

Google
First time ordering from here. Lovely woman attended to me, food tastes great and service was great as well. Had the tangerine chicken combination platter, and I was not expecting much, the the tangerine chicken was amazing. And I have 5o add, best egg spring roll I've had in a long time.

Google
Why would anyone purchase this food? First off this is takeout only the inside is in shambles with no place to sit and wait and it appears as if everybody buys their food online and just rushes in to pick it up. Now for one of the things that I just don’t understand here in Tallahassee, this restaurant is highly rated and yet the two meals we got we’re not edible. The beef lo mein was so overcooked it was mushy and completely dried out with a few pieces of beef that were like shoe leather, then some special Japanese shrimp and pasta dish which turned out to be nothing more than the same over cook dried out lo Mein noodles with shrimp and a bit of egg added to it, total bill over $30 result we had to find something else to eat. Shame on any restaurant that would charge $15 for a handful of dried out pasta. So sad to toss $30 + in the trash!

Google
One of the better Chinese takeout places in Tallahassee. The prices are better than a lot of places, and the portion was what you would expect. The General Tso’s was good, with a nice balance of sauce that left the chicken with a good crunch to it. Of all the takeout only type places in Tallahassee this one has been the best so far!

Google
Casual place. Friendly staff. Good food. We had "Salt and Pepper Tofu" and "Skewered Chicken". I love the tofu. The chicken was good but it was seasoned with authentic Indonesian seasoning. It was not quite my taste. Good and cecent meals for reasonable prices.

Google
I work right by this place, so I stop here for lunch pretty often. The food is fresh, it is well flavored. The Thai soup is amazing! the Mongolian tofu is the best tofu you will ever eat! I highly recommend this place, and it doesn’t have MSG like a lot of other Chinese restaurants. (No MSG bloat) It is more towards the Thai flavoring with being run by Indonesians. Try it out!

Yelp
Great service and generous food portions! I will definitely be ordering from Tan"s again. This can be my new go to Asian food restaurant.

Yelp
First time back since the pandemic. I ordered the hot and sour soup, beef rendang, and Tahu Isi to try it. I went to sit in the car because they are take out only and I had a dog in the car. The woman at the counter is always so friendly and I adore her lilting voice. She came out to tell me my food was ready so I went into get it. The hot and sour soup had too much cornstarch in it and it was not as flavorful as I remembered. I threw it away. The Tahu Isi was tofu filled with veggies, cabbage, onion, carrots and battered and fried. It was good but a little greasy. I liked it though and would probably order it again. The oil probably wasn't hot enough. The beef rendang had a wonderful curry aroma. I put a few spoons of it over the white rice. It was spicy with a good flavor. The meat was tender but some pieces had entirely too much fat connected. One bite was all fat. I liked the spice but be forewarned- it isn't for the faint of heart. It was good but I wished they would trim the meat more but fat is flavor. I'll come back for lunch and see if the beef Mongolian is as good as I remember.

Yelp
Terrible food. My shrimp in my pad thai noodles was hammered and the noodles were awful! No flavor except peanuts. And the hot and sour soup was neither, even though I ordered medium heat. And since when is hot and sour soup sweet? At home I added rice wine vinegar, schiracha, soy and fish sauce, but that didn't help. I threw it out. The sweet was overwhelming. The boneless spare ribs were sweet too. No real flavor. The General Tsao's chicken was ok. I do not recommend this place at all. Terrible. Too sweet without any umami balance.

Yelp
This is a take out restaurant with no dine in condition. We came here due to their Southeast Asia rendang beef. Unfortunately, they no longer carry that. We decided to have other items in the menu and notice they have Javanese food. We got the Javanese shrimp stir fried noodles. They give a lot of food. But the price is not cheap either for take out place. My wife got the pork pad Thai. We selected a picnic area and start enjoying our food. Unfortunately the taste is not match what we expected for the capital city. We did not finish the food and have to throw away due to taste. Value to price is not favorable and the taste is not there.

Yelp
Absolutely unacceptable. My pregnant wife and I both got severe food poisoning after eating here. This isn't just about a bad meal--it was a health hazard. We ordered takeout and within hours were both violently ill. Considering her pregnancy, this was extremely frightening and dangerous. We will be reporting this restaurant to the local health department. Based on our experience, this place clearly does not prioritize food safety. Tallahassee has its share of questionable spots, but this was the worst we've experienced. I'd strongly recommend avoiding Tans Asian Cafe until they prove they can maintain proper health and hygiene standards. Disappointed, disgusted, and concerned for anyone else dining here.

Yelp
We ordered on Uber Eats. I had the vegan tofu dish with coconut curry, lemongrass and other flavorful ingredients. It was delicious! Much better than my high expectation. There was a generous amount of tofu, about 12 oz., and a full container of streamed rice. I can't wait to order it again. And it was on special at 2 for 1 as were several other entrees.

Yelp
Ordered Christmas Eve dinner at 5:45P, a few minutes later the app came back and said it would be ready at 7:45P, OK its busy I get that. Arrive at 7:45 to pick up food, get lip service, but no food. Many people waiting. Past point of no return so just waited, a group of us in same boat discussed the situation. Finally got food 8:50P. But the nail in the coffin was the food was awful( have always has reasonably good food before) We threw out most of it out. Not sure we will be back

Yelp
Whoa, it's unbelievable. A real Indonesian restaurant in Tallahassee. We simply purchased everything was available to eat because we were unaware that it was solely for takeout. Noodles, rice, chicken, and an egg. and pancakes with scallions. Simply delicious. authentic street cuisine from Indonesia. I'll be back shortly. very amiable owner.

Yelp
I love this place, if I ever want Chinese food this is the spot I go. They are consistently good and they consistently give me way too much food. They are closed on Mondays but Tuesdays through Sunday they have my heart. Tans is hands-down, the best Chinese food Tallahassee. I love their customer service and they're ambience is great.

James N.

Yelp
Always love the food and service here. Unlike any others - nice staff, good food. Sure wish they would open sit down again
google avatar

Candace C.

Yelp
I can't say anything about what the inside of this place is like or the service, I ordered takeout for the first time this evening. The egg drop soup and honey chicken were delicious. This will definitely be my new takeout spot.
google avatar

Rachel T.

Yelp
Y'all, I'm so disappointed. The rice had no color or flavor, and the chicken was extremely gummy and not satisfying. Worst of ALL, once I had a couple of bites I found a bug (looked like a gnat) crawling in the chicken! Giving one star because the hostess was sweet.
google avatar

Shrelle T.

Yelp
The food was good. I would definitely stop here again when in town. I ordered the chicken fried rice, shrimp fried rice and Nasi Goreng Jawa (which isn't served like the menu shows) but they made it right and it was delicious. On my next return, I hope to try more things on the menu!!
google avatar

Brigitte M.

Yelp
We ordered the sesame chicken with rice (egg rolls included), shrimp lo mein, shrimp fried rice, and fried cheese wontons (all for pick up). Though everything was good, the noodles for the lo mein dish were a bit drier than I like; additionally, I expected to have more than five shrimp. Though I will have loads of leftover noodles left, I will have to make sure they don't become even drier when I warm them up. Of note, the shrimp fried rice had a decent amount of shrimp, but they were all at the bottom of the container - which is not the best way to enjoy the meal if eating directly from the container. In any case, the portions for most items are more than generous. I am sure that we will return but don't think I will order the shrimp lo mein again.

Taylor H.

Yelp
Tan's is so fucking good and the lady inside is so cute and sweet. Order the javanese rice or stir fry.
google avatar

Laicy H.

Yelp
This was my first time eating at Tan's and I ordered My usual go-to Chinese takeout order, which is an order of cheese wontons, egg roll and beef lo Mein. The egg rolls and cheese wontons were so good! But I couldn't enjoy the lo mein, the beef wasn't the best and the overall flavor was disappointing.
google avatar

Val N.

Yelp
The food is over salty and heavy on the rice and not so much on veges or meat. It is located next to Esposito Nursery.
google avatar

Joe K.

Yelp
Freshly cooked and HOT even when delivered. You need to get the Mongolian Beef and the Hot and Sour Soup for sure (extra hot). Highly recommended. Actually everything is above par here, even though the establishment is hidden in the corner behind Carrabba's. Great prices, too.
google avatar

Yelp
One word...YUMMY. We ordered the steamed dumplings, egg drop soup, moo goo gai pan, bakmi goreng (all the way) and fried chicken wings. ALL AWESOME. I wouldn't ordinarily order chicken wings when I am craving Asian food but this is what my daughter wanted. Ummm, holy deliciousness!! Soooooo goooood. I had this meal delivered but I can say that Tan's called to verify my order. The person I talked to was super sweet! This is a great place to order Asian-Americanish favorites AND to try I here they have a buffet, so I will see you there!!! ***Ordered some new stuff and I am posting pics of my new favorites, the Mongolian Beef and Shrimp Chow Mein!
google avatar

Mark R.

Yelp
I cannot begin to brag about the food tonight! full with rich flavors the Mongolian tofu was beyond phenomenal! It was cooked to perfection and the spices were outstanding! The service as well was phenomenal. They were truly customer centered watching out for what the customer needs. Making sure our drinks were refilled and that we were satisfied with our selection which beyond words we were! I will be back in Tallahassee next week and of course I will be going back here.
google avatar

Yelp
Great service food was good no sit down just take out fast friendly service the chicken and broccoli is good
google avatar

Virginia S.

Yelp
I've only ordered take put so I can't really review the actual restaurant. All I know is that the service/food prep is quick and it has always been delicious. Portions are also very generous and good prices.
google avatar

Chris E.

Yelp
Went to this place for lunch with a couple Chinese friends and everyone was happy-I has moo go gai pan and they had java fried rice with egg and hot tofu in a spiced broth. Everyone agrees that food was good and my friends said it was very authentic for American restaurant. The place is casual and staffs is friendly and accommodating. Recommend trying it out if your in Tallahassee
google avatar

Megan S.

Yelp
Unbelievable food and service! The portions and quality for the price can not be matched. My husband and I had Indonesian chips, steamed dumplings, chicken egg foo young, pork lo mein, and an egg roll with their house-made, and truly amazing, spicy mustard. The chicken egg foo young was delicious and looked so good that people passing by the table stopped to ask what we were having. The pork lo mein has real pork chunks and has the perfect texture and flavor. More than anything, the service stands out! Mr. and Mrs. Tan (and their staff) are always making sure everything is perfect and always helpful with suggestions or explanations of their menu items. They even chatted with us about an upcoming trip to China!

Yelp
Upon our daughter's recommendation, we're glad that we checked out Tan's Asian Cafe during the Friday lunch period. This place is very popular and jammed with customers for good reason - their $11.99 lunch buffet is quite good with delicious food and soup selections which include fried rice, lo Mein, fried tofu, sweet sour, chicken satay, spring rolls, egg drop soup, hot sour soup and my buffet favorite - salt and Pepper shrimps! Wow the shrimps were huge and oh so very tasty! The wait staff are very attentive and quick to replenish your drinks. The owner Manager who greets you at the front register lobby area is so friendly and cordial and took the time to show me the two local beers that she had on draft. Tan's is a nice hole in the wall find if you are looking for really good Asian food and friendly service!

Yelp
Hidden in a little shopping center I driven daily but never noticed is a very interesting combo of Indonesian and Chinese food that's familiar but different enough to make Tan's stand out as a unique spot. The food is cooked to order so be prepared to wait, I don't mind and prefer. Everything we ordered tasted great, I also noticed its not to salty compared to some other Indonesian spots I been too in other cities. Besides the Chinese and Indonesian they also have Taiwanese beef tendon soup, Pad Thai, Pho, Singaporean curry laksa, and some vegan options. Tried 6 things got about 20 I plan on coming back for.
google avatar

Steven B.

Yelp
This place is way better than your average Asian food strip mall joint. Very good food. Really friendly service. Prices were a little high. I paid $20 for the chefs special with a tip, but the lady working take out orders was so sweet, I wish I would have tipped her more.
google avatar

Yelp
Off the chain for Asian takeout or dine-in when they resume that service post -pandemic. The Mongolian tofu is sweet and salty in all the right ways and the tofu is EXTRA crispy. Something that vegans and non-vegans will appreciate alike. I'm also a big fan of their Pad Thai and Mapo tofu (spicy and tofu is not crispy). They also have lots of fun Indonesian appetizers which you don't see at many other restaurants. You can't go wrong with any of those. The spring rolls are also delicious. This place is not trying to be anything fancy, but it over delivers on the quality of food.

Yelp
A coronavirus review: Hats off to Tan's for providing gateside pickup. They are not seating customers at this time (which I greatly respect), but they are offering delivery and pickup. We preferred on their web site and paid online. It's been a while since we had Chinese food so we went all out: egg rolls, cream cheese wontons (a more accurate name than Krab Rangoon), wonton egg drop soup, General Tso's chicken, Mongolian beef, and pepper salted shrimp. Everything was wonderful. The Mongolian beef is the best in town, the salt and pepper on the shrimp was perfectly balanced , and the General Tso's has a welcome hit of spice. It was a great dinner...and soon to be great leftover lunch. We called them to see how to do the pick up. They said to park abs stay in the car and they would call us. They did, right at they promised time, and you walk up to a table in front of the door where they give you your bags. And it was confusing to see all employees, in both from and back of the house, wearing masks. Thank you Tan's!

Nykierama C.

Yelp
Best customer service ever! And oh my God, the Extra Spicy Mongolian Chicken are to die for. Who knew fried rice only needed egg. I love this placed!

Yelp
How have I not penned a review for Tan's? Tan's has been a fan favorite of mine and my close friends for years. I've seen renovations, additions and an influx of loyal customers right before my eyes. The food is consistently great. Whether you're going all out for the $9.95 lunch buffet or a classic Chinese meal, Tan's has all the bases covered. Even Indonesian cuisine! A few of my favorites would be the Boneless Spare Ribs, Mongolian Tofu and the Fried Chicken Wings (oh yeah). Most dishes include fried rice and choice of egg roll or spring roll. The tickets times are always quick. However on occasion, I've had rice come out cold (like tonight). And sometimes the water has an off-putting taste to it. Other than these mishaps, Tan's has my giant stamp of approval. If you ever have the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Tan you'll be in for a treat! She's such a nice woman. Rock on, Tan's!
google avatar

Suzette M.

Yelp
If you like a different taste from other American Chinese restaurants, this is the place. Their fried rice and lo mein dishes have a slight spicy kick. Unfortunately, they only offer a handful of Indonesian cuisine. I wish that they would bring back their satays and maybe offer one Indonesian dish each week.

Yelp
Okay, so let me explain the reason for my rating. I had an engagement to be at at a certain time, and wanted something decently quick to eat, but I was allowing myself 40-50 minutes to eat before I needed to leave. First place I chose was closed, so I decided upon Tan's. It looked nice on the outside, and I came in, was greeted, and sat at my table. The place wasn't busy, so I figured I'd be able to get out pretty quick. I went by myself and only ordered the beef tendon soup. As time went by, I was beginning to wonder what was taking so long. It eventually got almost up to 40 minutes of waiting, and the waitress told me she would check on my food. Within a few minutes, she brought it out to me. It was still hot, thankfully. The food was alright. It didn't taste special or anything. I only tried one thing, and they have a decent sized menu, so I can't speak for all of it based on the soup, but at least it didn't taste bad. The prices were fine, about what you'd expect, and I had a decent portion of food. I was able to get filled up a bit. I know I could've asked sooner what was taking so long, but I was both trying to see if they would notice, and didn't want to trouble them. I wasn't offered any kind of compensation (I don't look for that or ask), but this is more than likely not a common occurrence. I ended up missing my previous engagement. I may go back, and hopefully it will be better then.

Yelp
NASTIEST CHINESE FOOD IN TALLAHASSEE GOT ME SICK The was old, soggy, flavorless. Terrible 100x WORSE THEN MALL CHINESE FOOD. We were missing food, wrong order, it's was inedible. It's chewy chicken tasted like a PUBLIC TOILET. The general Tua chicken, was soo old, the chicken breading was mush. The friend rice was completely flavorless. The king po chicken, was inedible, disgusting, smelled like pans, was all got sick after. HEALTH HAZARD

Yelp
Found another good asian food - with authentic indonesia cuisine! 1) vegan samosa 2) Bakmi goreng with chicken ( Javanese stir fry noodles) 3) daging bumbu bali ( Balinese beef) We love all the food even it dont have fancy display. But it is so delicious! We will plan to revisit to try other Indonesian food By: www.yencooking.com

Yelp
We decided to give it a try. But our experience was disappointing. The order took an hour-and-a-half to be fulfilled. To the restaurant's credit, we were called and warned that orders were backed up, which is understandable during the pandemic. But our disappointment was with the food. The egg rolls, rice and lo mein were fine. But the Moo Go Gai Pan had no chicken! And the mixed vegetables were much too over-cooked. I would have rated one-star, but want to provide a bit of slack considering the difficult times for restaurants.

Yelp
I was on my roadtrip and driving pass through Tallahassee & found this place from google. They only have 2 Indonesian dishes on the menu and I ordered both. I'm Indonesian and craving for real authentic Indo food. The food is so tasty!! my belly are happy :) The workers are so nice too. I ordered mine to go and how I wish they have more Indonesian dishes on the menu.

Yelp
Picked up dinner Thursday evening and everything was fantastic. The owner even threw in some of these amazing fritters to try - they were great.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious homemade spring roll. They were very safe with covid restrictions and doing takeout only. We were happy to order and take home.

Yelp
While returning to Jacksonville from a road trip along the Florida Panhandle I decided to stop in and take a break from the road and grab lunch at Tan's Asian Cafe. The restaurant was take out only however there was a single table outside for dining. I decided to eat there since the day was nice and I was on the road. I had the Moo Goo Gai Pan. It came out quickly and was really good and was complimented well by the sweet tea and great weather. The vegetables were cooked just right, the one that ere supposed to be crunchy were, and the sauce mixed well with the rice. The person who took my order offered to throw away my food containers. The food and service was spectacular. It was a nice break from the road before I returned to the First Coast.

Cassandra A.

Yelp
I have ordered take out every time, but seriously some of the best food around! The cream cheese wontons are fully loaded, the dumplings are delicious and the servings are generous of the general Cho's and it's delicious!!
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
I ordered lunch online today. It was ready before the time it said it would be. No one is allowed in the restaurant, so an employee meets you at the door and brings you your order. It was so easy and pleasant! I got sweet and sour chicken, egg fried rice, soup, a spring roll, and cream cheese wontons. Everything was delicious! The lunch portion was large enough that I had left overs. The spring roll was large and so yummy. The chicken was flavorful and filling. I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
This Asian establishment is mediocre at best. A three star sounds about right. I've been here twice so far for lunch since I moved back to Tally. Had their beef noodle soup which was awful and not authentic AT ALL! I used to eat this delicious beef noodle soup at China Delight when it was owned by this Taiwanese couple. I thought Tan's was their new restaurant but I was wrong. I didn't find out until later that it was actually Ming Tree. So that's an epic fail. I then returned to try their lunch buffet which was better. Selections were pretty decent and I especially liked the satay. They were very tasty! I'd say lunch buffet is a solid choice but then again the small room was full of white ppl and no Asians. Guess that says something. They do, however, offer Indonesian cuisine here which I haven't tried. For that, I'll give them benefit of the doubt.
google avatar

Chiara M.

Yelp
The food is good there. Most dishes. We did have a terrible experience: when we went there to get takeout. Because our toddler was crying and without asking the cooks, the tough lady in the front told us the food was going to take 40 min - Really? The place was empty but I guess they didn't want our service. A waste of our time! As soon as a customer goes in the door, the front person or the servers who greeted us, should have informed us how long it's going to take for takeout. The lady at the front should treat everyone equally especially when the restaurant has 4 tables that have finished their dinner. When we left, the lady at the front looked at the customers next to her and they all laughed. Very disrespectful.
google avatar

Dianne M.

Yelp
This is still the best place for lunch! Curry vegetables, spicy beef (that really is spicy), curry chicken, crab Rangoon. You name it- it's on the buffet!
google avatar

Anne J.

Yelp
Yesterday I went to Tan's Asian Cafe for the lunch buffet. I really enjoyed it. Had a good variety of different types of Asian foods. What I really like was the dishes had different flavors some buffet the food kind of all tastes the same. The food is good, hot and continuously refreshed. Really enjoyed the curries and the dumplings. Nice staff they take care of you. It doesn't have a lot of atmosphere and the huge tv that is on the sports station was bit overwhelming. I will return for sure!

Rick L.

Yelp
I ordered Chicken fried rice and was extremely specific on the chicken being well done but nope! No utensils to eat my food with and no sauces!! egg roll cold like it came out of the refrigerator! I can't understand how a place like this stays in business period! They definitely won't get my business again!!!

Alex H.

Yelp
Finally found good authentic Asian food in Tallahassee! We got the Taiwanese Beef tendon soup and the rica-rica, which is pork in a spicy Indonesian sauce. Both were fantastic. The broth in the soup tasted just like I remember from a recent trip through SE Asia, with big chunks of tendon. That may be off putting to some who are looking for basic, watered down Chinese food, but it was exactly what we wanted! If you want real Asian food, go here.
google avatar

Yelp
I used to LOVE their Javanese pork fried rice but they completely changed the recipe!! And now it's so disappointing.. please bring it back!
