Tanuki

"Since 1989 Ivan Verhelle has been treating his diners to a genuine taste of Japan. The table service and interior are larger than life and the open - plan kitchen provides a bird’s eye view of the preparation of fine ingredients, such as fresh wasabi. The chef is a fan of teppanyaki cuisine and can even organise (bookings) a tea ceremony." - Michelin Inspector

This is the best Japanese restaurant in Brugge. I am surprised by how authentic the interior Japanese style design it is when stepping into a traditional Brugee house, and the menu also offers the variety of selections. We had the set menu and the taste is close to what you can get in Japan but not 100% for sure. But it is very compare able if you like to enjoy a good quality Japanese food. The price is set at right level base on what you get as environment, service and taste. If you are looking for the total experience for authentic Japanese food, this is the place to be.

Tanuki is always and special experience. Every thing you eat is so good and contains so much flavour. The staff is incredible and the chef is world class. If you are not familiar with Japanese food I would recommend the Bento box then you can try a bit of everything. The interior is outstanding it will make you forget that the restaurant is actually in Bruges and not in Japan.

Absolut disappointment. Money you pay not equal food quality. The chipset ingredients for top range price. I do work in this business. Got food worth €10 and paid €150. Absolut rip off

Lovely meal and experience at Tanuki for lunch. The atmosphere really feels like you’ve just stepped in to Japan. Everything was very delicious and of quality. I would highly recommend!

It's funny to go to a Japanese restaurant while in Bruges, but it was one of the best decisions. Not only is it a beautiful place with a unique atmosphere, almost as if you were in Japan, but also the food is delicious, authentic and of a superior quality. I recommend drinking Japanese green tea. Both meat and fish are carefully prepared and melt in your mouth. An experience worth living, it is a piece of Japan in Bruges.

Slow. Very slow. I sat down at 630 and ordered the set menu. It's almost 830 and I haven't had the main yet. And the portions are not big. I don't need 30 mins to eat 4 pieces of tempura. I'm bored. I should have just had frites instead. This is silly. The quality of the food is ok, nothing special. Not worth the price

Very nice authentic Japanese restaurant! Especially fish and beer. Highly recommend, although quite pricey.

This is a kind of the Japanese restaurant you would expect to come across in Japan. The atmosphere is so Japanese. The food is authentic. We had a good time there.

Yelp
Beautiful Bruges has a wealth of lovely places to eat at and Japanese is featured high on the culinary list thanks to Tanuki. Pass the door and you'll be transported to the other side of the world, ready to indulge in the flavors of Japanese teppanyaki. The wooden beams, overall décor and large open kitchen give it that authentic feel, but beyond the welcoming look and feel you will get to appreciate some excellent food. Not to mention, good value for money if you consider how expensive Japanese food can be in Belgium. We went on a busy Saturday night and were seated at the counter facing the sushi chef. Things seemed to run very smoothly and we ordered sashimi for starters followed by a prawn and a beef teppanyaki. The sashimi was fresh and tasted great. It was very nice to be able to see the chefs at work, slicing and dicing, and the plating up right in front of you. The teppanyaki that followed were equally good, with a preference for my beef order accompanied by tasty mushrooms and a flavorsome jus. Prawns were no showstopper but weren't in any way bad. Good food here, and proof you don't need to be Japanese to master the iron griddle and cook good food. The Belgian head chef does a fine job surrounded by his Japanese team.

Yelp
What a nice and quiet refuge from the busy tourist hasstle of the city. A beautiful Japanse decor welcomed us for a booked lunch. We were guided to a nice table with a view on the small garden and pond. We started off with two Japanse cocktails, one of which came in a ceramic figurine. We got the bento box and the teppanyaki beef. Every bit of the lunch menu (some appetizers and a miso soup) came at a leisurely pace. Our main course was very tasty and appealing to the eye. All in all it was a wonderful culinary experience. We'll be sure to come again!
