Beautiful Bruges has a wealth of lovely places to eat at and Japanese is featured high on the culinary list thanks to Tanuki. Pass the door and you'll be transported to the other side of the world, ready to indulge in the flavors of Japanese teppanyaki. The wooden beams, overall décor and large open kitchen give it that authentic feel, but beyond the welcoming look and feel you will get to appreciate some excellent food. Not to mention, good value for money if you consider how expensive Japanese food can be in Belgium.
We went on a busy Saturday night and were seated at the counter facing the sushi chef. Things seemed to run very smoothly and we ordered sashimi for starters followed by a prawn and a beef teppanyaki. The sashimi was fresh and tasted great. It was very nice to be able to see the chefs at work, slicing and dicing, and the plating up right in front of you. The teppanyaki that followed were equally good, with a preference for my beef order accompanied by tasty mushrooms and a flavorsome jus. Prawns were no showstopper but weren't in any way bad.
Good food here, and proof you don't need to be Japanese to master the iron griddle and cook good food. The Belgian head chef does a fine job surrounded by his Japanese team.
