20 Excellent and Child-Friendly Restaurants in the East Bay

"Bring your appetite, mellow vibes, and a desire to connect with the community to this tiny, funky eatery with a big heart and assorted games — plus an unofficial play structure, the tree out front, for elementary-aged kids to explore while you wait. Mostly takeout, the restaurant does have a few bar stools and tables inside and, weather permitting, outdoors for those who want to linger. It’s a true neighborhood spot, with periodic parking lot concerts and lots of fans from the nearby school. Owner Joe Frankel also works for Drake’s Brewing Co., so beer is big, though a few wines are always available, along with lemonade or root beer for a kid-friendly treat. The eclectic menu features hefty sandwiches and entrees, salads, a fab matzo ball soup, jambalaya, and daily specials (WTF Wednesday and Taco Tuesday have devotees). The kid's menu means grilled cheese, chicken tenders, and butter-cheese pasta, but the regular menu’s pesto pasta has some little ones’ hearts." - Laura Smith Borrman

Tartine Manufactory Opens New 40,000-Square-Foot Hub in Los Angeles - Eater SF

"Oakland’s Montclair has a new neighborhood bar and restaurant: Taps and Takeout (5736 Thornhill Drive). It offers a tight menu of salads, soups, sandwiches, dinner plates, and sides — plus a kids’ menu — including matzo ball soup, meatballs, and fish and chips. As the name suggests, beer is a focus, with tasting flights of four brews available for $10." - Janelle Bitker

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Taps & Takeout in Pediment, and I must say, it was an outstanding experience! From the moment I walked in, the welcoming atmosphere immediately set the tone for a great meal. The decor is modern yet comfortable, making it a perfect spot for both casual dining and special occasions. The menu boasts a fantastic selection of dishes, with something to satisfy every palate. I opted for their signature burger and a side of loaded fries, and I was blown away by the quality and flavor. The burger was perfectly cooked, juicy, and topped with fresh, high-quality ingredients. The fries, smothered in cheese and toppings, were the perfect indulgence! What really stood out to me was their extensive drink menu. The craft beer selection was impressive, featuring both local and artisanal brews. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and helped me choose the perfect pairing for my meal. The service was top-notch; the staff was friendly, attentive, and made sure my dining experience was enjoyable from start to finish. I also appreciated the cleanliness of the restaurant, which is always a significant factor for me. Whether you're looking for a quick takeout or a place to unwind with friends, Taps & Takeout is the perfect choice. I can't wait to go back and try more of their delicious offerings!

Google
We had a lovely dinner at Taps and Takeout tonight. The food and drinks were very tasty at an affordable price. Joe and Matthew were very affable, and provided exceptional hospitality. Whether you're looking for a hearty meal, something light, or just a beer, we highly recommend Taps and Takeout!

Google
I’ve now been here a handful of times. It’s my favorite restaurant in Oakland. Joes, the owner, is a really cool dude and has put a chill menu together. Huge portion of coffee!! Amazing Brussels sprouts and gigantic bowls. It’s a great brunch spot and nice for a beer and dinner.

Google
I had a phenomenal experience at Taps and Takeout and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a bite to eat, terrific beer on tap, or a warm ambiance. Joe, the owner, welcomed me into his place and was very kind to me throughout my time there. I had the steak sandwich and it was a well done meal at a good price ($12 for mine). The menu is extensive and the chef in the back does a great job getting orders out. I met some nice people there as well, mostly locals from the surrounding neighborhoods. It had a nice community feet to it and I'm sure I'll be back very soon.

Google
Great community spot to stop in for a beer and good food! Kid friendly as well. The owner is there much of the time and is great at making sure you feel welcome and taken care of. Cheers!

Google
Local spot, it was dead (no ambience or other patrons), small cozy cute dining room, bbq was good - a bit spendy for the quality but good portions... Prob will not go out of my way to return but if I did might be willing to give it another chance or recommend others to at least try it and report back..

Google
Came across this place today and saw a nice live show outside which sounded really nice, so we got in and ordered some mimosas and fries which all were priced really fairly and everything came out quickly Great atmosphere and the crew are very friendly! Definetly coming back for the Columbian party on 9/29

Google
Perfect spot for a bite before an event at the church across the street. Our server was absolutely delightful. It was fun to be offered free shots of whiskey when we arrived. Food is satisfying and reasonably priced. Lots of families having a great time.

Yelp
Small restaurant that spills out to the patio. Friendly owner and staff. Great vibe, good food, excellent beer.

Yelp
Alright....very good location....waited for a lifetime for food....but seriously location location location....live music....!!

Yelp
Incredible hole in the wall joint. Some of the best fish and chips I've had in the Bay Area.
google avatar

Steve M.

Yelp
Great food and nice staff. The beef burger and fries along with Brussel sprouts make a great dinner.

Julian S.

Yelp
Wonderful idiosyncratic bar and restaurant. It's like an English pub; everyone knows everyone else, and if you're a newbie you'll be embraced with open arms. Very limited menu, changes nightly, but everything I've had has been excellent and very reasonably priced. Limited hours, check before going.
google avatar

Bobby L.

Yelp
Jambalaya was some of the best I've ever had, and easily the most affordable I've ever had. $10 for a whopping portion, and filled to the bring with chicken, pork sausage, and fresh shrimp. Service was quick and painless. Ambience was very relaxed, small quarters but clearly taken care of. I will be back soon.

Stephanie R.

Yelp
Had the fried chicken sandwich with a side of fries. Overall great quality and delicious. For personal preference I would add for next time some pickles and maybe some spicy sauce on the side. The people here are great and super friendly.

Yelp
Do you want to open a great beer and food place in your neighborhood? Check out this nice little place in the Moraga area of Oakland and do what this place is doing! The service was super friendly and welcoming. As there Are not a whole Lotta places to sit you need to be flexible and go with the program and try and work with other people to find the best setting location. There is a very nice group decided to move it outside and they were nice enough to offer as their table. This is just what a friendly neighborhood beer and food place should be. The fish and chips were amazingly good. The fish was very fresh, thin pieces of mild white fish with a very thin crispy flavorful tempura style coating. The fries were really pieces of whole potatoes nicely cooked and although I've heard them referred to as "soggy" that is simply the way they are because they don't have the artificial stuff on them to make them fake crispy. I'm deathly looking forward to my next visit here and I appreciate the great food and the welcoming, friendly and relaxed atmosphere..

Yelp
Taps and takeout, friendly, cozy little spot on Thornhill wonderful music food is fantastic. Oysters are phenomenal our little neighborhood taps, and take out.

Yelp
Stopped by while driving by. Amazing neighborhood place. Cozy backyard style. Lovely and friendly staff. Live band, children hanging out, puppies playing. Really amazing and inviting atmosphere. Will be back.

Jason B.

Yelp
Generally happy and will return, ordered on a Friday and ordered the daily special including various smoked meats, I did the brisket which wasn't at all what I was expecting - thin slices, fairly tough meat.. I wouldn't order that again. Other sides were good though and will probably give the place another try.

Yelp
Joe is incredible! He lives in the neighborhood, kid attends school, owns the tap room and plays music at the wine bar a few doors down. But he feels, thinks, and talks like community. Their hours are late in the evening. COVID changed things for everyone. Now instead of opening all day they allow the coffee shop to take the morning biz and they open later so there is no competition. You cant get a better neighbor than that. That's equity in capitalism bc the community benefits. Im a fan and customer for life and havent even bought my 1st meal here. There are examples of GREAT ppl/community happening in Oakland. I see it in District 4!

Geoff M.

Yelp
New to the area! Found Taps just down the street. Everything has been delicious. The MAC AND CHEESE is perfect!!
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
There are half empty liquor bottles scattered around the dining room. There is a large Tupperware full of cannabis. The staff are not sober. They are mass rolling joints behind the counter, and seem to have forgotten that I placed an order. I was offered a shot. This place doesn't have a liquor license. It's filthy. How are they still in business?
google avatar

Minako O.

Yelp
Love supporting neighborhood businesses! We ordered take out. Fish n Chips were crispy. BBQ pork sandwiches were delicious! Owner most kind and gracious.
google avatar

Nasrin M.

Yelp
We tried this place for the first time as takeout. Very good food overall. They have gluten-free bread for sandwiches upon request. We tried the pastrami melt and fish n chips. Fish N chips is not gluten-free. They aren't open for lunch which is a shame because they could be getting a lot of traffic. Their sign is also not very visible. Marketing dept needs to step it up ;)
google avatar

Benoit B.

Yelp
Great food and comfy family ambiance. Music outside on Fridays is great. Coleslaw has Kale but ok then.
google avatar

Kimmy G.

Yelp
This is such a great little local gem. There's limited seating inside and out, but they have a great selection of food and drinks, and they do live music on the weekends. I came here for the first time because they were doing a fundraiser for the local school, since then I've been back a few times. We love a business that supports their community. I'm a fan of their burger. You can taste the freshness and they're never greasy. The staff is friendly and so are the other customers. I think local spots like this are important for Montclair and Oakland, and I'd definitely recommend checking it out if you're nearby.
google avatar

Monie B.

Yelp
Found this place while browsing the internet for a place to grab a bite nearby one evening. We were pleasantly surprised to find amazing food, even better company, and a neighborhood gem we would be coming back to regularly! I had the impossible burger, which was great....however, I could not leave before ordering fried chicken "to go" after watching several customers order it and it being the "special" of the evening. The chicken was EXCELLENT! I can't wait to try the jambalaya. Great beer selection...even got cans "to go" after a couple pints at the bar.

Yelp
Taco Tuesday is a must. This is Montclair version of "Cheers!" Always feel welcome and special here. Interesting people and owner Joe never stops smiling--genuinely! Some great food, beer and wine too. There's a generous amount of fish in the fish tacos and the salsa is delicious. Ditto for the shrimp tacos. The brussels sprouts and mushrooms are terrific too. I'm a pescatarian so I judge the meat dishes.
google avatar

Louis G.

Yelp
Great people. Fun atmosphere. Fast service. Conducive ambience. Convenient location in Montclair on Thornhill.

Becky L.

Yelp
I haven't been here in a minute and stopped in last week with my kids when I didn't have any dinner plans and was too tired by the week to make dinner. Was fun to run into so many familiar faces from Thornhill Elementary! There was another family dining in and we invited them to share the large table with us -- was a nice and casual place for dinner. Food is always above average, beer is cold, the guy behind the bar (maybe the owner?) offered a free shot of tequila. Would love to go back more often now that the weather is getting nicer. Sweet little neighborhood spot, great vibes, would love to support it. I also saw some folks picking up six packs of craft beer, not sure how it works but nice to have that option!
google avatar

Yelp
Nice to have a place nearby. I am very pleased with their fish and chips and beet salad. Very friendly owner. I would definitely recommend this place.

Philip A.

Yelp
Cool intimate ambiance, solid beer selection, nice staff vibe. Thanks! Had a good time, great place for a meeting!
google avatar

Yelp
Love the relaxed vibe and delicious food! The matzoh ball soup is so so tasty and the fries too!!

Yelp
Great local spot with amazing food especially the Mexican and seafood specials...healthy options available...also great local musicians featured intermittently Thursday was a really great blues band....great spot for date night or family or alone you will make new friends!
google avatar

Yelp
Great Montclair addition! They offer the best taps on draft. The owner knows beer and you can tell by the rotation they make available. He is also super chill and provides recommendations and tastes until you've make your selection. They also have a solid menu. I like getting a few share plates to enjoy amongst the small group. The Brussels and mushrooms are yummy! They also give you a small snack when you sit down such as chips, etc. The have small seating inside and outside. We love coming here on Thurs or Fri night. I can't wait to try the brunch.
google avatar

Jeffrey N.

Yelp
The name is a bit of a misnomer. We thought it would not have seating, and it actually has a pleasant large table and outdoor seating. The owner is affable. The decor is down home and charming. Macaroni and cheese was some of the best I have had in some time. Matzo ball soup was hearty and full of good stuff.
google avatar

christine c.

Yelp
I wouldn't consider or expect a wing to count as one of the pieces when I order 4 pieces of fried chicken. Skin was pretty good but meat was dry - seemed old. Mushroom medley too salty. Steak sandwich completely mushy. Meatballs weird taste. Fresh cut chips SUPER salty. Cornbread seemed like jiffy instant mix.
google avatar

Lorena S.

Yelp
Super cute and cozy (read: small) local spot. This place has a warm vibe with a friendly owner behind the bar that makes you feel very comfortable. We sat at the bar (seats 6) and ordered from their special taco Tuesday menu. We tried the steak and the fish tacos. Both were fresh and yummy. They have a cart that rolls around for toppings which we had to wait for while other customers also topped of their tacos. You can also grab refills for your chips from the cart. I'm glad we stumbled into this neighborhood spot and we'll be back for their fried chicken Friday. They've only been in business since early 2018 and it feels like they're really trying to make themselves a neighborhood staple and I'm here for it!
google avatar

Theresa S.

Yelp
This is a teeny tiny, cozy neighborhood hangout with good food and beers. Be ready to get to know the friendly staff and patrons. There is counter seating for 5 or 6 and 2-3 small tables inside. There is also outdoor seating so you can bring your dog. I had the Cubano sandwich and an IPA. Both were very good. The homemade chips were not my favorite-- some undercooked and others over cooked with a slight burnt taste. Fries would have been better, but the sandwich was very good. They are just starting a brunch menu on the weekends can't wait to try their Benedict and mimosas .
google avatar

A G.

Yelp
Great place for locals! Food is always consistent. I love the Texas Burger, Clam Chowder and Cubano Sandwich. The staff and clientele are always engaging and it feels like a great community meeting spot. This place was great during COVID and I hope to see them expanding now that they will have less restrictions.
google avatar

Jim U.

Yelp
Delicious, fantastic food with a superb selection. Every item stands out, try the Brussel Sprouts. Joe provides outstanding service and offers a tasty menu of beers. During the pandemic Joe stop serving lunch so the Cafe near would be able to stay open. You will not be disappointed.

Mike M.

Yelp
Great little place. Joe the owner is a great guy who does slot for the community. Stop in have a beer and some food.
google avatar

Andrew B.

Yelp
This place just opened and it already has a place in my heart. Big portions, great food, and delicious beer. Brought my wife, son, and father and we jumped in on all of the sides, the amazing fish and chips, and solid steak sandwich. Get here before they get super popular.
google avatar

Heather D.

Yelp
Three words - Freakin' Taco Tuesday! Limited beers on tap but they have an IPA that I crave and the best tongue tacos ever. The meat is super soft and flavorful and the soft tacos are super fresh. If you are in the area stop in, the staff is super friendly and accommodating. They will even set you up outside or take your beer and food to go. I also have tried the tamales (maybe a Wednesday thing?) but they don't hold a candle to the tacos.
google avatar

Devon M.

Yelp
This place is awesome. I came here for lunch one day. I grabbed 2 apps. I got the mushroom medley and the brussel sprouts. It was super good and so much food I couldn't eat it all... and I can eat a lot. It's nice to be able to find something healthy as it's not just a burger joint. I've also enjoyed a beer with the owner, great guy. His name is Joe. Highly recommend. I think they may be doing brunch soon which will be a fantastic hit.

M H.

Yelp
Stumbled across this gem on a rainy Friday. Great sandwiches. Delightful staff. Nice ambiance. Recommend the fried chicken sandwich.
google avatar

Yelp
We heard Taps and Takeout was giving free beer with takeout, so, naturally, we decided to try it. Ordering online was easy, even before they opened and including setting up a pick-up time. Selected menu items had options, mostly free, for condiments and additions. I walked out with my food and a Drake's dark lager to go. The fried chicken sandwich ($12) had thick, juicy breast on a fresh roll, served with BBQ sauce, mayonnaise, and tomato. The spinach salad ($9) served with vinaigrette was tasty. The side of French fries ($6) was generous, but the fries were greasy and undercooked, although we easily fixed that in our toaster oven. The fish and chips ($16) included a generous portion of those soggy fries. The menu offers cheese on many items including most sandwiches and some salads. It's an odd obsession, but it's easy enough to click no cheese. No, I didn't want cheese on my fried chicken sandwich or spinach salad.
google avatar

Eddie P.

Yelp
Quick update. We've been back a few times and the staff are super friendly, food is good, and they seem to be working at building community. Upgrading to 4 stars!

Yelp
Tonight was special. Very Special. The S.O. and I ventured a total of 1.1 miles to give Taps & Takeout a try. The venue is small and intimate. Very informal setting. The establishment's owner, Joe, is engaged with every one of his visitors, as if each was one of his few friends left on the planet. Big screen TV and a tap selection of ~6 beers with lots of other selections are available in cans. Their food menu is killer however. Killer! The Friday Night Special, which we thoroughly enjoyed, was the Fried Chicken special ($19 for 4 pcs and 2 sides). We also ordered the Fish and Chips. The Fried Chicken and Fish were as good as I have ever had. No Doubt! The fries were totally A-W-E-S-O-M-E! TOTALLY! All beer selections available to us are very well priced. We were out the door with 3 beers and two main food selections with some tasty sides, with tip, for under $60......YOU JUST CANNOT BEAT! Lots of Montclair locals filter in and out during the evening. More seats to dine (or drink) outside if the weather cooperates. A very friendly vibe, produced exclusively by the owner and his friendly employees. Even tho' we were first timers, they all made us feel very welcome. Well worth checking out. We will....Fo Sho!!! 5 Stars in anyone's book.: No Lie!

Rick T.

Yelp
This place has good food, but I had an extremely negative experience there last night, and will never return. Unfortunately, I was the victim of a crime committed by another patron. My jacket was stolen from the back of a chair in the music room where friends and I had gathered for a blues jam. There were approximately 20 people in the room, all of whom where known to me or others in the room. At one point two young men who were unknown to everyone came in holding beers that they had purchased in the restaurant. There were standing immediately behind the chair where my jacket was hanging and they left after one or two songs. Once the gig ended, I realized that my jacket was missing and told the owner. Beware the criminal element in Montclair.

Tierney F.

Yelp
5 stars for the Matz ball soup! It was sos good. Better than most and better than most made at home. Everything I wanted and needed.

Yelp
Well I waned to like this place, a small local eatery. I wanted to support them after seeing all their sad signs out front basically begging people to give them a try, but it didn't work out. First time I went in was for lunch, I ordered the Mushroom Medley and added shrimp. Portion was generous and I got two meals out of it but was very expensive at $16. The mushrooms were too salty and the shrimp was overcooked. Bummer number one. I thought I would try their Sunday brunch, brought my dad last weekend and they were not open at 9am when the brunch starts. We waited till about 9:15 and the place was dark inside, so we left. I called a few days later and spoke to a woman that confirmed with someone in the kitchen that they were indeed open last Sunday. I said they weren't open on time but that I would try again this weekend. Maybe they had a flat tire? I'll give them another shot. Bummer number two. We tried for breakfast today but they were closed, again, with no one inside. We waited till 9:12am, then we left. Bummer number three. We went to the Grand Lake Kitchen instead and had a great meal. Don't bother, it's a waste of your time, and the one dish I had was sucky.
google avatar

Yelp
Remember the last time you went to a friend's sunny deck BBQ and the food, company and beer left you walking on air and in exceptional spirits for a few days? That's like T&T. I'm delighted that we've got such a small, local hideaway place here on the apron of the hills, removed from the main drag. It feels like a corner pub. But the food really was unexpected....burger like a backyard BBQ. Chicharonnes topped with juicy pulled pork (surprise!) And Mac and Cheese like Grannie's secret creamy recipe. Like another poster said. Don't go here. Leave it for us ;)
google avatar

Matt C.

Yelp
Super small (2x 2-tops, 1x 8-top and 5 seats at the bar), but cozy. Was warm, and decor is simple. That being said - the food was far better than I expected. The steak sandwich was on point and my daughters chicken stripe were good too. Everything was fresh. A touch disappointed in the beers on top. Bud light, drakes and a porter. For a place this small with taps in the name - drop the bud. People working were super nice and friendly, and very fast. Will be back
google avatar

Craig B.

Yelp
Right in my own neighborhood and I didn't know. You'll know you're there when yo see the people. Cool looking group. Outdoor seating and 2 bar areas. We were greeted warmly and offered drinks. Food came right away we were off. Home we found great looking fish and chips. Flavors did not disappoint. We will go back.
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
What a great addition to the neighborhood. Fish and chips are excellent and plentiful and the couple of specials I've tried were amazing. Nice rotating beer selection and the owner is super friendly. Check it out!
google avatar

Jason A.

Yelp
I'm a huge fan of this place. I've tried everything on the menu and while everything is good, my favorites are the fried chicken, Cubano, and steak sandwiches. This place offers awesome taco tuesdays and fried chicken fridays. For sides, I definitely recommend the Brussels sprouts, mushroom medley, and Mac and cheese. This place is a great local hangout spot. the owner and staff and all the customers are all super friendly. Shout out to Joe, Justin, and Valerie! Come for the food and stay for a couple glasses of beer and wine! Before you know it, you'll be a regular too!
