The Best New Restaurants and Food Carts in Portland, March 2025

"In September, Haitian cart Tap Tap expanded into a full restaurant where owner Dieuson Alix’s warm hospitality can be felt whenever he leaves the kitchen (he shares cooking duties with his mother). To start, an order of bannann peze — fried plantains shaped into little cups cradling griot or shrimp and spicy pikliz — is a good shareable option for the table. Entrees like grilled snapper come with legume, a comforting mixed mashed vegetable dish, and mushroom-infused black rice studded with lima beans." - Paolo Bicchieri

Yelp
Coming from Miami and being married to a Haitian it is a must to always look for Haitian Cuisine whenever we travel. As soon as we found out about Tap Tap Cuisine, my husband and I were super excited to come by and try it. I ordered the legume and my husband got griot. It was pretty delicious and the staff was super nice and friendly.

Yelp
The food is pretty good, similar to other Caribbean island cuisines like Jamaican and puerto Rican, lots of beans & rice, fried plantains and meat. Not the lightest of foods but sometimes you want hearty and filling. We tried the whole fried fish, chicken wings, and plantains w/ griotz (fried pork belly cubes) and the Diri Djon Djon which was like a tasty savory beans & rice. It was also served w/ a side of Pikliz - like a slightly spicy pickled cole slaw which I really liked. The legume was ok but not my favorite - like a mild coconutty curry stew w/ eggplants & cabbage. A bit too mushy consistency. My only complaints is their menu is a little irregular, they don't always have everything so I would call ahead if you were wanting to try a specific dish, particularly the fried fish. Also it was supposed to be snapper but they only had tilapia which was still pretty good but I wish it was snapper. Also it is a bit pricey for some of their entrees but that is just kind of the way restaurants are now. They have a nice little covered seating section w/ a few tables but it can be pretty hot in there if it's sunny and warm. Also I would check google maps for more accurate hours.

Yelp
I was visiting from Washington and Im always on the hunt for caribbean food. Usually, I will do Jamaican because Haitian food is not something and I can find. Lo and behold and Checked and here was Tap Tap. It sooo good! We order the red snapper fish (my absolute favorite), fried chicken and Griot. The rice, sauce, piklez, everything was like being back at home In my Mom kitchen. Plus, as Haitians we are naturally welcoming as the owners were.

Yelp
This was so good! We stopped in on a whim and ordered the fried plantains with fried chicken and pickliz, and it blew our minds. The flavors of everything combined in really interesting and complementary ways. We also had the don djan djan which was SO good. Even though we hadn't had it before, it felt like home. :)

Yelp
The food here is absolutely delicious. We stopped by on a whim and everything we ordered was completely finished by the end of our meal! We chatted with the owner as well and he was lovely, and really cares about the food. Highlights for me were the whole fried fish, legume, and rice and beans. 100% worth the visit.

Yelp
During my recent birthday celebration road trip to Portland, Oregon, I had the distinct pleasure of dining at Tap Tap Cuisine. The culinary experience was truly remarkable, and the customer service was exceptional. The restaurant's location is also highly favorable, contributing to its overall appeal. As a Jamaican who grew up in the Miami neighborhood known as "Little Haiti," I have had ample exposure to Haitian cuisine, particularly griot. My childhood memories include saving my allowance to purchase griot from a Haitian lady's house on Fridays, with the assistance of a neighbor who spoke her language. My first taste of griot occurred when I was 11 years old. I felt compelled to share this background information to establish my credentials in assessing the quality of Haitian cuisine. Tap Tap Cuisine proved to be an exceptional gem in this regard. Plus, my 2 friends who accompanied me are of Haitian background. We all gave it a 10 out of 10! In all areas. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by the owner, creating an immediate sense of camaraderie. By the time we departed, we felt like part of the restaurant's extended family. Tap Tap Cuisine operates as a family-run establishment. The ambiance took me back to an island setting. I will most DEFINITELY be back again! If you are in or is visiting the Portland area. Do yourself a favor and check them out!

Yelp
Excellent experience. I live in NYC where we have plenty of Caribbean food restaurants but this place has them beat. Good vibes, great food and service, and cool artwork made by our server. It was my favorite restaurant I tried during my week long stay in PDX

Yelp
I order the fried plantains. The service was really good. Very nice guy. The food was amazing so delicious right very warm and comforting. The only thing I would recommend to make the place better would be some music.

Yelp
This place has amazing food and service! I had diri ak sos pwa and legim (rice, bean sauce, and stewed vegetables). It was so good I thought I was in Jacmel. I also went back for passionfruit juice which was delicious. The two folks working were incredibly kind and attentive. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
This is such a gem! Authentic Haitian food in Portland? How lucky. This place was so delicious, we had the family combo and pate for a big lunch. My children devoured everything and my youngest declared "I'm in heaven! As high as you can go in heaven!" There was a bit of a wait for food, but it is worth it. Everyone working there was so lovely & kind and the vibes were good. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
We are so excited to see another delicious Haitian restaurant in PDX! The food was DELICIOUS- we ordered one of each menu item and everything had the true flavors of authentic Haitian cuisine. The hospitality was outstanding, the owner made sure we were comfortable and welcome, he also made sure to greet every person that stopped by. The covered area with the turf made for a nice environment to enjoy our meal. We can't wait to come back and visit!

Yelp
So glad Tap Tap opened in the neighborhood! The food is incredible, and they were extremely friendly. He is getting set up for winter since it's mostly outside, so don't hesitate to try even in the colder weather.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. The service, food, and ambiance is amazing. It felt as though I was right back in Haiti. My favorite thing on the menu is the fried chicken with the pikliz. The rice and beans with the legumes were so flavorful. Everyone who worked there was so polite and always check up on us to make sure we were doing good. All of this is coming from a true Haitian and I will forever give this restaurant a 5/5
