In downtown Ann Arbor, you can walk in any random direction and find good food. While i was trying to figure out how to pay for parking (it took me a while to figure out parking is free on Sunday), my wife found TAQ. When she told me about it, I thought she was trying to spell Taqueria, and gave up after three letters.
The interior looks more like a diner than a Mexican restaurant. But if the food is good, I've found that atmosphere doesn't matter to me. The food is astonishingly good.
The chips are heavy duty, super crispy. It makes me not want to have chips out of a bag ever again. The elote is rich and creamy, and it makes me love corn more than I already do. The guacamole is very cilantro forward. The pico de gallo is flawless.
The only issue I had with the tacos...is they there too many of them, so I can't eat them all in one sitting. Each taco is $6, but you'll want to try several different kinds.
The pork in both tacos is smoky, robust. The steak tacos were lean and seasoned to highlight the beef. The care taken in the preparation of the meats makes it clear that they really care about what they're serving. The chicken in the Greek taco was a bit overcooked, but nicely charred and, how fun is it to enjoy a taco that dressed up like a gyro?
The tortillas themselves require some mention. These are freshly formed, and every bite you take wraps those amazing meats in a gorgeous blanket of corn.
Jade was a real gem waiting on us (sorry...bad pun). Seriously: she did not steer us wrong when answering questions, so we asked her to surprise us with a taco that we hadn't ordered yet. The barriga (pork) taco was excellent.
And, the Mojito was strong, and loaded with fresh mint. Not cheap ($13), but worth it.
Even with $6 tacos, this will not be a cheap meal for you. But, that's on you. The food is so good, you'll find yourself ordering a variety of different things. And, yes, you will be back.
