The Best Tacos in Houston | Eater Houston

"Tucked inside a family-owned, full-service meat market and grocery store, this taqueria is known for its long, countertop-lined space with red vinyl-topped stools, where diners can watch as their orders sizzle on the grill. There are nearly 20 types of tacos to choose from, such as nopalitos (prickly pear cactus), aguacate (avocado), barbacoa, and jamón. Fair warning: If you’re not a Spanish speaker, you may need to dust off your high school Spanish skills to order at this cozy spot. Stop by the carniceria and grocery store after to pick up imported spices and quality cuts of meat to take home." - Brianna Griff

Google
This is your typical hole in the wall, Mexican joint. It was jampacked with people, so I thought it must be good! I was craving a gordita, and this came up on a google search as I had just landed at Hobby Airport. I knew it was a good thing because it was packed with the locals. I was afraid that it would be very greasy, and it was a bit oily for me, but it didn't upset my stomach. It was really yummy. It is a restaurant/grocery store with only seating at the bar.

Google
Food was delicious! The scent of food was mouth watering and the food arrived quickly and service was spot on. The horchata was really good and not watered down or too sweet. you get your monies worth and portion sizes were just right. I recommend checking this place out, oh and they have a meat market/grocery store right next to it, convenient!

Google
let’s first start with the staff very sweet and welcoming. the restrooms were also very clean. the food was amazing. i will be making the drive again. i order the torta de fajita and a gordita de pastor and a agua fresca de limón. it’s amazing that they already bring you limes without you have to ask for them. now the salsas i wish i could drink them i love that they had a kick to them

Google
Amazing experience, the local staff are super friendly, it gives a México kind of vibe with the set up, the attention to detail, the staff friendliness are top notch, the food experience is out of this world El personal es super atento, los detalles de el lugar te brinda una experiencia auténtica, el sabor de la comida es delicioso, súper recomendable

Google
This place is the Mexican Benihana—but way better and way cheaper. You sit down, face the grill, and boom: tacos and gorditas cooked right in front of you while you sip on fresh aguas like royalty. If they don’t have your drink, just stroll to the grocery side, grab one, and come right back. Been around forever, and for good reason. It’s fast, it’s fire, and it’s a Houston legend .!

Google
Going here is an experience! Gorditas are Texas sized and usually come with beans and cheese. Nopal gordita had an authentic flavor, not slimy nor tart. The chicharrón en salsa verde is spicy, careful. Trompo tacos are mega flavorful, but eat them quick because the tortilla hardens as it cools. This place is packed but line goes quickly, service is fast, and food is served fast too. They have about 7 fruit waters. Cucumber lime was refreshing, a little on the sweeter side but not overpoweringly sweet.

Google
It’s like a diner style restaurant just 2 row of seats. And parking is a little crazy but the food was amazing. The service is quick and fast. From ordering and actually getting the food was so fast.

Google
Gorditas, go hard! This place is really good & Aguas Frescas are the best 👌🏼. Only down side for me is too much grease/oil! They should change their cooking oil for something healthier !

Yelp
It was amazing very delish food and the best service but the line was very long line but it was worth it an the employee was very sweet especially the young black dude

Yelp
Absolutely loved this spot!!! I ordered the Menudo and a Gordita, and both were amazing -- super flavorful and really hit the spot. The food honestly felt like something straight out of a home kitchen. The service was great and the wait time was surprisingly quick. The space is a little tight, but honestly, that just adds to the whole vibe -- it feels like you're sitting down for a meal with family. Cozy, welcoming, and delicious. Definitely will be coming back!

Yelp
Typical hole in the wall Mexican restaurant. It is connected to a grocery store so you can get your groceries and satisfy your munchies too. It is an old building, I needed some Mexican fix on my way home from the airport. I got a bean and green chili gordita and it was pretty good. It was a bit greasy for me, but it did not upset my stomach. The salsa was also good. The staff was very kind and friendly despite being hectic and packed.

Yelp
Definitely one of the best taquerias in Houston!!! I love everything on their menu. I always order chicharon en salsa Roja, lengua, and fajita tacos. Also love their gorditas!!

Yelp
Very cool experience! The service was awesome. The flavors are definitely authentic. Brush up on your Spanish before you go. Parking is challenging, but there are spots along the street. It is very crowded on the weekends. But the food is fantastic. And the ambience is like a small diner in Mexico. I recommend you try it out.

Yelp
The food was good but to be fair i was borderline hangry. Service was fast but it's 90% spanish speaking so there was a bit of a barrier in language. I love authentic feel of the place when you walk in- almost like an old school diner with bar style seats and tables. The place has great reviews and maybe that set the bar higher than i should of expected it.

Yelp
I mean come on. Houston Texas let's go man. Day 3 of university of houston bball camp. Needed some grub. I was recommended a lot of places but nothing seemed worth it? Found this spot on Yelp and knew I had something special. I arrived around 6 ish on a Tuesday and was greeted in spanish (i know minimal Spanish lol) and was taken to the counter to order. It's like a diner setting where you sit at the counter in front of all the workers and it was fantastic My Spanish 3 knowledge carried me as I ordered 2 chicken tacos, 1 carne asada Gordita and a large limon Fresca. Ladies and gents. This was fantastic. The servers are all attentive and my order was taken so quickly. We placed the order and waited no more than 10 minutes for the food. The limon drink came out first and was as big as a big gulp. It was the best lemonade-esque drink I've ever had. My chicken tacos came with lettuce, tomato and i added green and orange salsa along with a lime. The taco was filled with juicy meat and the veggies added a nice crisp. The Gordita was sort of a quesadilla with carne asada. Circular smaller tortilla with cheese and carne asada and my goodness it was good. Juicy and crispy meet with runny cheese. If this is the best meal I eat in houston, I won't be disappointed even a little bit. Oh also. Look at menu prices . $2.20 for a taco and $4 for a Gordita is ridiculous. The drink was the most expensive thing I bought lol. I paid for my friend and I and it was $27 total. And considering I don't normally buy drinks, this could have been well under $10 a person if I played my cards right. Steal! 10/10

Yelp
I rate restaurants on 4 core values which is Customer Service, Taste of food, Price & Cleanliness. Service - Is okay. It's not bad but they also don't go out of the way to do anything extra. There is no host, waitress's or servers so you have to order your food at counter when you come in and you can sit where you like. Taste - I like it very much. Reminded me of my mom's cooking. Value - for the taste it was good price! Never spent less than $20 for any meal. Cleanliness- Despite the outside look the inside is clean. Overall - I recommend this place. Food is tasteful and delicious but don't expect much for customer service and you'll come out happy. My suggestion is to take it Togo.

Yelp
Hadn't been here in years, like 12 years. The food is pretty good, I had a Gordita carne asada and two tacos, one barbacoa and one pierna. All of the food top notch. The service, while nice enough is very lackluster. The employees mostly have a very passive and don't really care to be here type attitude. No one was rude, but at the same time no one actually seemed to want to be courteous to the patrons. I would be back if I was in the area and craving good and very reasonably priced mexican snack food, like tacos, torta a, gorditas.

Yelp
If you want some great no BS Mexican food, you must try this place. They have the best gorditas! Their food menu is simple: tacos, gorditas, tortas. They also have menudo on the weekends. You won't get the rice and beans on the side like you'll see at some other places but you won't need it to love it. You will need to know a little Spanish to get by but you can get away very little, if that's intimidating then just make sure you look at the menu before visiting and it will work out fine. The parking lot can get busy but it's worth the effort. Once you enter, you'll be in the carniceria and if you look to your left, you'll see the entrance to the dining. There will be two lines, one for to-go/pick-up and another to be seated. If you decide to dine-in, you'll watch the workers make the delicious food and they'll provide you with a number when they take your order (think whataburger). They'll use this number to give you the food once it's ready but you'll need to keep this number since you'll use it to pay at the register before leaving. That's about the gist of it, make sure to try one of their aguas frescas (I personally loved the horchata) and if you have some time check out the carniceria after.

Yelp
This place is more of a taqueria, not quite a restaurant, it is small and rush hour is a long wait, but with time is all worth it, the place is also a meat market with a lot of Mexican products, candy , cokes, etc. But to get to the business, the tacos are outstanding and as far as $2 taco is worth it, the gorditas were not yo my liking, they had good flavor, I'm just used to different style, the tortas are good, my first time it was well balanced, but my to go order the second time was missing a lot of meat, more bread than meat. You can order over the phone, and you can also order on line, it is not as easy as it should be, but it works if you get things as they come. The service was great, friendly and as fast as it could be for such a small place.

Yelp
This is hands down the best place for the best gorditas . This location has been around for years definitely a hidden gem anyone should try for gorditas and the menudo on Sundays is always great . Service kinda sucks sometimes cuz it's small spot inside the carneceria and usually a wait especially on weekends. I highly recommend to visit I had the Gorditas and that's all I ever get very delicious and always fresh .

Yelp
Places feels so authentic. The Gorditas are amazing. So are the tacos, but the Gorditas stood out to me because of the flour they use. Sooooo good! Must try!
google avatar

Yelp
Food was amazing and authentic, the vibe and people were nice and attentive, definitely recommend coming here ! There is a line but went by quick food is worth it
google avatar

Yelp
Food here was 10/10! Tried the rajas and chile verde gorditas and a torta de al pastor. There was a long line but it moves fast. Also tried the agua de melón which was great! Wish the seating area was a bit bigger but overall the experience and service was great. The staff is really friendly, great customer service!

Yelp
I kept seeing this place on my TikTok Feed so I drove 40-45min to come try it and the food was phenomenal! It was busy when I walked in which was around 6:30 pm on a Tuesday. The staff were very welcoming and friendly! it's a 10/10 taqueria
google avatar

Yelp
First time this week and ordered to-go. It's a cute, small place. It looks hectic but they actually have a pretty good system going. The aguas frescas were super good! They actually tasted like authentic fresh fruit. Would recommend, just keep in mind it is small and popular, but they work fast.

Yelp
So perfect! This place is a gem. We found it years ago for lunch. Working in the area this morning I stopped in to see if they have breakfast. They do serve the entire menu starting at 7 am but no traditional breakfast items. So it was a Gordita for breakfast for me. The orange salsa is . Had to grab a 16 oz container to go. I'm so glad I found this place again. Far from home but when in the area it is a must stop.

Yelp
Great hidden tacos place. Its famous and known amongst hispanic, but i bet most Houstonians dont even know about this place. It is located inside a grocery store. I came around 2pm and it was super packed. I ordered 5 tacos, barbacoa, al pastor, lengua. They were all really good. Good portions and generous with meats too. Price are also really worth it. You gotta be careful, most of the workers dont speak english, so you have to carefully place your order. Food 8.5/10 Service 8/10 Price 8.5/10 Place 7.5/10
google avatar

Brandi B.

Yelp
The best gorditas around! You know it's good when it's consistently busy. Everything comes out good and hot.

Carlos G.

Yelp
The place has the best food in Houston. The employees are outstanding always with the great smile and happy to help you with anything that you need!!!

German M.

Yelp
Drove down from Dallas to get some of the best gorditas I've ever had. Worth the drive I wish more places would learn their method
google avatar

Yelp
Food is spectacular. Definitely found a new hole in the wall. In a city full of options when it comes to real Mexican cuisine, this place stands above them. I had the pastor tacos and of course the Gordita with chicarron.... Aye ya ya ya... bueno!

Will G.

Yelp
This very well may be the best place in Houston. The vibes are fantastic - have a small diner feel. As soon as you sit down, they bring you hot sauce and take your order. All the food is phenomenal (and extremely affordable - 4 Gorditas and one large agua fresca is $25 with tip). I would recommend the Al Pastor and Carne Asada Gorditas (they are bomb)! I don't speak Spanish very well and the waiters/waitresses are very patient and helpful! We are and forever will be regulars!

Edmund P.

Yelp
Best gorditas ever. This place never dissapoints i have been going here for more than 20yrs and it's still as good as the first time i went
google avatar

Yelp
After trying multiple "best" listed in Yelp/Google and being very disappointed, we finally discovered this diamond. I strongly encourage everyone to try the food here. If you want to true "home meal" this is the place. First, the staff is super friendly and patient. The tacos, gorditas, and aguas were excellent. We tried a variety of meats and were all exceptional. The place is simple, with no frills and rustic, but the food shines. I hope you enjoy as much as my family did.
google avatar

Clay C.

Yelp
Stellar gorditas. I enjoyed the carnitas ones more than the carne asada. Can't wait to come here again
google avatar

Yelp
Great service , I will drive further to get there instead of Michoacana. Fresh food, friendly service 100% authentic.
google avatar

Croix L.

Yelp
Very good, affordable Mexican food. I got the Menudo, gorditas and tacos. Meat is tasty. The menudo is the best I've ever had. Looking forward to coming back.

Shawn C.

Yelp
The food counter is amazing. The food is fresh and delicious. Must speak Spanish, very limited English.
google avatar

Natalie S.

Yelp
This place is a must when I'm in Houston. It's located inside a carnicería, and only bar seating. Get ready to sit tightly with other patrons and expect a bit of a wait. The gorditas are definitely worth it. They're super delicious, as are the tacos. I didn't expect much from the tacos but they were actually very delicious. As far as Gorditas, they were all good. The chicharrón gordita is also solid but I think my favorite is al pastor. Price is super good too, about $21 for 3 gorditas, 1 taco, and 2 Mexican cokes. You must stop in for some good Mexican food.
google avatar

Brianna R.

Yelp
Incredible food! The service was speedy. It is a cramped space but that didn't impede the taste of the food, so it's not a negative.

Morfi J.

Yelp
The gairditas where okay, and the tacos mid . Not worth the hype . They're grocerie store is good tho
google avatar

Mila F.

Yelp
The food was amazing it had the juiciest flavor even tho the wait is a little slow it's worth it
google avatar

Rudy C.

Yelp
Most reviews have mentioned how delicious and authentic the food is. The flavor of the chicharrón verde in the gorditas and the nopalitos scream: authentic Mexican flavor! Even though the line was long , the service is friendly and relatively fast. The ambiance of the establishment is appealing. Everyone is enjoying good food! Also, the cooks wear gloves, head nets, and clean uniforms :) even though the place was packed they keep up with keeping it clean.

Cole D.

Yelp
The BEST Gorditas I have ever had !!!! I don't come here often because I live about 40mins away , but when I do I order about 6 Gorditas to go. MUST try this place if your in South Houston - you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Chantal R.

Yelp
Food is not always the best I have gotten hard tortillas and sometimes it's the best. service is good and fast and ambiance is always welcoming.

Yelp
This is probably one of Houston's best kept secrets... a tiny taqueria hidden inside a meat market. Right on Broadway, about two blocks from the 610 freeway, this little place is huge on sabor! Right as you enter, hang a left and walk through the threshold to reveal a counter with about 20 barstools. The menu is pretty limited, but when the food is this good, you don't need a 15 page menu. In fact, there are no menus. Just sit on the stool and turn around and looks to the wall and there is all you need to know about what to order. Tacos, torras, quesadillas, and delicious aquas fresas, or even a Mexican coke or Fanta in the glass botellas! Come on nephew! They keep it simple and good. You get to sit and watch all the food being made, it's honest and no frills, they keep it rolling! You get your food fast in a little Plastic basket and your food choice comes wrapped in a sheet of Sysco aluminum foil so you can keep it all together while you shove it in your face hole! They have red and green salsa for your spicy accoutrements, no chips though. You won't need them. When you're done, stop by the carnicería and pick up a mango or tiny pot of tamarindo candy to put a sweet treat on your stuffed belly. Provecho!
google avatar

Ger B.

Yelp
Best gorditas you will ever eat! No matter what meat you go with make sure to get extra cheese and extra toasted.

Scam Likly S.

Yelp
Good‍ It's good really good my dad loves this place it's smells like your grandmas house feels like it
google avatar

Lin L.

Yelp
best gorditas EVER Hole in a wall but best gorditas in the H as always! Wish they would expand already but hey maybe that's what makes this spot so good

Chris B.

Yelp
Best . Good. Ever. Fast service and the place is just like home. The people there are nice and are hustling, be sure to clean up after yourself to help.
google avatar

Misha T.

Yelp
I've been told by some trusted sources that these are the best gorditas anywhere. Those same sources brought me some home for lunch today and while the gordita was great, I think it suffered a little in transit. But i was also brought two chicharron tacos and those were incredible. Just wildly unctuous. Beware of the red salsa though, it's pretty hot and you can go overboard with it.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
Amazing tacos! Went in on a Saturday afternoon and it was packed. I was able to get to the Togo window after a short wait and with my high school Spanish was able to order. I admit parking was difficult but glad I waited. Asada , pastor and Barbacoa were delicious. Everything so fresh , tortillas outstanding and their sauces the perfect compliment.
google avatar

Carlos Y.

Yelp
over price if you ask me i had better tortas and tacos at a food truck honestly not worth the wait
google avatar

Santoria M.

Yelp
This place is cool the food is served counter style. Service is great. The Tortas, Gorditas and tacos are delicious. Oh and get the lemonade, then thank me later :-)
google avatar

Rosalinda L.

Yelp
I love Aguas , it's definitely a gem they have the best gorditas !! And yumm the aguas frescas are natural and refreshing !! I also love the meat market !! On the weekends they have the best barbacoa & carnitas it's a must !!
google avatar

Qul G.

Yelp
A hidden gem! Weird layout but worth the maze lol. It's a huge building for such a small "restaurant". Enter through the grocery store and take a left. It looks like there's only registers to order to go but if you walk towards them, you'll see a long bar seating area along a wall. And the only menu available is painted on the wall along the bar. It's extremely narrow and crowded that it can be hard to find seating but everything is so delicious that it's worth it whether you eat in your car or try to brave finding a seat.
google avatar

D R.

Yelp
This place never disappoints! I had their famous gorditas because they are the best!!! I had lengua gorditas because I always get the fajita ones and they were awesome Both their red and green salsas are good too! I've tried almost all their Aguas frescas and they are all !!! If you haven't tried this place yet, I highly recommend you do asap! It is a very small space and all seating is bar stool seating (which is limited, especially during lunch hour).
