"This family-owned establishment is a Southwest neighborhood mainstay, not the least because it stays open late on weekends. True to the town of El Nacimiento, for which it’s named, the restaurant serves Mexican food in a family-friendly atmosphere, with specialties like spare ribs marinated in salsa verde, soothing bowls of pozole and menudo, and a full breakfast menu (great for brunching). Strong cocktails, including enormous micheladas, are also served alongside options like ceviche-stuffed oysters, traditional breakfast specials, and whole-fried fish. Online ordering is available." - Serena Maria Daniels

"When nursing a crudo from a night out on the town, Taqueria el Nacimiento offers an array of soothing caldos like pozole, menudo, and siete mares — a seafood stew bursting with shrimp and octopus — the ideal cure for what ails you. Top off a nourishing meal with one of the spot’s enormous micheladas, including the michelada botanera — served with chilled shrimp." - Serena Maria Daniels

"At Taqueria El Nacimiento on West Vernor Highway I observed a busy first day back: we opened at 9 a.m. and customers returned eagerly after five weeks of closure. The family-operated spot—open for 19 years—had been busy with carryout during the shutdown, kept employees on rotating shifts, built metal-framed plexiglass dividers to place between booths and to enclose the register, requires staff to wear masks and thoroughly sanitizes everything on tables (from salt shakers to menus) between guests, currently seats about 90 patrons at 50 percent capacity while adding a new patio area, and is prioritizing staff PPE over policing customer mask use because they don’t want to put themselves in confrontational situations; overall, it felt like people were starting to get back to the restaurant atmosphere little by little." - Brenna Houck
