12 Best Taco Shops in Charleston | Eater Carolinas

"Consistently rated as some of the best tacos from a truck around, Taqueria Espres gathers a cult-like following in North Charleston. The doubled up tortillas are stacked with perfectly seasoned meats, onion, and cilantro. Each order comes with a few pickled carrots and a jalapeño." - Erin Perkins

Great customer service but even better, great food! Love the fajitas… Fun Fact: Fajitas express have ground Mexican sausage, chicken, steak, and 3 shrimps. (Love the sausage in it.) but if you’re not a fan, make sure to request to remove it. Great prices too!!!!

The service was great. The food was okay. My cousin had the “Pollo a la Plancha” which she loved. They do not have a variety of drinks, mainly jaritos and beers. I ordered a horchata which was really good. My main issue is there’s no heating, it was really cold in the restaurant. Especially I came on a really cold and snowy day, I did not expect this place to be freezing.

I have been here many times for years. The experience I’ve had today, just ruined everything for me. I ordered my daughter a plate of cheese sticks. As she began eating her first cheese stick, she unfortunately choked on it (she’s okay now). I asked the waitress to change what we had for chicken fingers instead as she almost died eating one. the waitress told me I was still gonna get charged for the cheese sticks plate. That was absurd. I spoke with the manager regarding my concerns, and he stated that they would’ve taken it off my bill if my daughter were to say she didn’t like how the food tasted… OH BUT IF SHE NEARLY DIED, IT WOULDNT BE ENOUGH? I would also understand if my daughter had eaten most of the food.. but that’s not the case. she only picked up 1 cheese stick. on top of that, i waited 24 minutes for the new kids meal to come out.. i ended up paying for the food because i was not gonna waste any more of my time for the kids meal i asked for. Ridiculous.

We were driving by and saw this place and decided to stop. The atmosphere is authentic to a Mexican spot. We were seated pretty quickly and ordered two shrimp tacos, two steak tacos, chips and guac and two Modelos. The guacamole is delicious and the chips were fresh. Our food came out before the guacamole and chips with no napkins or utensils. The waitress looked lost when I asked for napkins and utensils. When I asked her where our drinks were she asked" what did you order water?"... No, we ordered two Modelos. The wait for the check was longer then expected because the place was not crowded So far this place is two stars. I would have to come back to see what my experience is then.

Google
Unprofessional waitress. Did not refill or check on how we were doing. Claimed we wanted beef but clearly told her chicken. She had an attitude and told her boss in front of us that she heard us say steak. Come on now, one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a Mexican restaurant and trust me I've been to many of them. Did not offer refills for drinks or chips at any point or check on how we were doing during our entire interaction. Worst experience and we've been coming here for years. Came here for Sunday menudo and left unsatisfied and barely touched my food. There are a dozen of other mexican restaurants in a 5 mile radius that offer a better experience and show maturity to their patrons. I understand espanol and worked in service before so please have some maturity. It’s not like we asked for something out of pocket. My girlfriend is literally allergic to beef and would never ask for carne

The atmosphere was fun and lively. I went with a group of friends and everything we ordered was delicious with good service! Nice spot to grab something tasty.

Yelp
We started with the salsa which was super fresh, the. had the barbacoa and shrimp tacos, and a chimichanga dish. All were delicious and the service was amazing. Very authentic. We really enjoyed it.

Yelp
Clutch!!! Good tacos and drink variety. Quick service and food made to order, not just sitting on grill

Sarah D.

Yelp
I came here for the first time and had such a wonderful experience. I'm a vegetarian so eating out can be complicated sometimes. I ordered 2 orders of tacos vegetarian, and they checked with me so many times to make sure they had it right. The tacos were great! The salsa for the chips was amazing, some of the best I've ever had. I also had an order of esquites and it was great! I loved the way it was plated. The Christmas decorations were beautiful, all of the staff was so nice and helpful. I highly recommend coming here and I will be back.

Yelp
Chicken quesadilla was perfectly cooked as well as the rice and beans will be coming back ASAP! Highly recommend

Yelp
Peor experiencia de servicio al cliente en todo charlotte, la mesera con su actitud prepotente no quizo cambiar mi orden a pesar que fueron ellos los del error. Este restaurante queda descartado para mi completamente

Yelp
Stopped here for lunch on a whim. Small entrance that opens up to a nice sized sitting area and bar. Prices are very reasonable. We had 6 asada tacos,4 flautas plate, horchata, queso, and another drink for $32. Food was cooked quick even with them being busy. They played current popular Mexican music which was enjoyable. Bar has two large tvs and at this time was showing novellas. Staff was nice. The salsa and salsa roja were a bit mild on the picante scale for me. Tacos had a good portion on meat. Flautas were good as well.

Yelp
Super tasty food and reasonably priced! The chicken and steak tacos were great, as well as the burrito! I love that the salsa wasn't extremely spicy, instead it was mild. The service was great, will definitely be back! I rate this place 5 stars because of the great food and experience but I'm also not going in there expecting a Steak 48 experience! It's an authentic taco place off of Albemarle Rd!

Jose O.

Yelp
I've been a handful of times and really haven't been impressed. Unfortunately it fits the typical Charlotte-Mexican food experience of being mediocre and doing too much. To start off the music is super loud so it's a bit hard to have conversations. The service is hit-or-miss, sometimes it's great, sometimes the waitress/waiter is nowhere to be found (not to mention they forget who ordered what). Items I've tried have been the tacos and tortas. The tacos were OKAY at best, nothing crazy, tortilla was too thick (just because it's handmade doesn't make it better), meat was super greasy, the salsas weren't too bad though. I had their torta and it wasn't worth it. Bread wasn't toasted and crumbled at every bite, I asked for a milanesa de pollo and you can tell it was pre-made and left out because the chicken was dry and the crust was soggy. No real flavor and the toppings were not helping. Zero cheese or beans even though it's supposed to come with both. I will say the price isn't bad and overall fair.

Andrele H.

Yelp
The food is ridiculously good and staff are superb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chris G.

Yelp
Great food and they make it quick. The cubana and tacos de asada are my fav, the red sauce is also amazing since it's spicy but not to much

Natalie P.

Yelp
I try & support small businesses and popped up for my break to have lunch after a 20 hr shift....... can't believe I was treated so poorly ....almost ruined my appetite and on top of feeling racially profiled the food was SO bland Will never be back & if your black ....FYI your not welcomed or atleast I wasn't

Michelle B.

Yelp
Best Mexican food I've had since living in Tijuana and Jalisco. I am obsessed with the campenchano burritos. Prices are sooo low but man it's so good. Staff is friendly, helps if you speak Spanish but if not they got u in English too. Been going and ordering take out for years. Never had a wrong order. Anyone in the area knows only two places hit on the correct orders and amazing food. Taqueria Express is one of those 2.

Yelp
The quality of food has declined since my last review. The grilled steak meat on my sons tacos were like thin slices of dried beef jerky. The watery mole sauce on my daughters enchiladas were heavily seasoned in cinnamon. I kindly asked the waitress before ordering this item to allow me to taste the sauces of their enchiladas to make sure they were up to par. My request was refused. That is the first time this has happened to me and I should have known to get up and eat elsewhere. My pozole was a bowl of red grease with overly soaked mushy hominy beans and small chunks of what might be pork. Might have been passable as some unknown stew but this was not an authentic pozole. It was served with two bean tostadas garnished with waterlogged romain lettuce shreds. I returned the enchiladas and requested a cheese quesadilla, which ended up being filled with yellow cheese instead of quesadilla, chihuahua, or mozzarella cheese. Overall, each of our meals were not palatable and could never pass as authentic flavorful Mexican dishes. Meats are definitely cheap cut and not fresh. After doling out $38 for food that was barely touched, I made sure to tip the waitress for at least being somewhat attentive. This place gets busy and seems to have a local following. The staff are busy hard at work keeping tables cleared and floors swept. However, the quality of their meats, vegetables, and food prep are very questionable. Their pricing is highway robbery. Attached are pictures to provide an idea of what I described above.

Yelp
Tacos are delicious! I ordered them "special" which means instead of the standard cilantro and onions it'll be lettuce, sour cream, cheese, and avocado. Bathroom cleanliness has not improved. Salsas were also diluted with more water today.

Yelp
Keep in mind their sign actually reads Taqueria Express. This is a tiny little taco stand carved out of Fruteria El Pueblo just west of Woodlands on Albemarle. Orders are placed at a window overlooking a stuffed, hot kitchen. Food is quick and simple. Menu's surprisingly large - lots of tacos, quesadillas, burritos - didn't seen any Salva-or-Ecuadorian influences on there. Language could be an issue if you no tengo un pequeno espanol. I have a thing for tortas, so that's what I got - and it was good. A little pricey (6.50 for huevos y queso) but easily one of the better ones I've had in CLT. Soft, sweet teleras, Monterey-Jacky cheese, shredded lettuce, some jalapenos. A mess to eat, but whatevs. This isn't the "IT" torta, but it's totally worth a stop.

Yelp
Bad, bad, bad customer service. Chips used to be free. Now they charge. The excuse is that some people don't eat them. Well, if I ask it's because I want to eat them. Asked for a little bit of chorizo dip to try it. The answer was no. Wow! Not business savvy at all. Not going back
google avatar

C T.

Yelp
Today was my first time eating here. I dont know where to begin, from the hair strand in the salsa, the one small order of tortilla chips because they "ran out" the water they said they'd bring my child before I could say, "sweet tea." The chicken had NO SEASONING !!!!!!!! My daughters "shredded beef" taco was "Beef Jerky" with cilantro and onions that was supposed to be left out. The waitress nice but she acted nervous the whole time as if she was being held captive to work there. I left that place smelling like onions with a full appetite!

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and drive out to Albemarle Road eat here. It puts all these other latin chain restaurants to shame. Tortillas are super fresh food is excellent and fresh. Very nice wait staff and servers. Shocked at how big the restaurant is inside. Nicely decorated felt like I was in Latin America somewhere lol... honestly mad I haven't came here before

Yelp
This place has been redone since the last time I was in Charlotte. It used to be a bit more rustic looking but now it is warm and inviting! Walked in after a gym session dying for some tacos. First let me say, I love tacos and I love authentic tacos and friendly service. This place at least had authentic tacos. The tacos were decent ordered the carne asada, carnitas, and al pastor. The al pastor was extremely flavorful and I would totally order it again, the other two on the other hand...never gain. The meat was subpar in quality and the seasoning was nonexistent the only saving grace was the decent salsa and clearly handmade tortillas! Now to the customer service, maybe I am nitpicking, but it really irked me. I walked in and the person in front of me ordered in Spanish, I also order in Spanish, the girl responds in English, I respond in Spanish. She refuses to speak to me in Spanish. I then ask her about salsa in the togo box and she ask if I want chips and salsa....like no...I want to know if you put salsa verde in the box. She tells me she doesn't know what they put in the box. I ask her if she can check, she just looks at me. I want to support local businesses and I want to have yummy authentic tacos, but with the attitude, I will take my business to some other taqueria up Central Ave. There are plenty that use better quality meat and are way friendlier.

Yelp
So the reviews of this place looked pretty good and sometimes little hole in the wall places are the best for food. NOT this place. I ordered the chicken quesadilla and I said "it comes with beans and rice right" and she said yes. I also ordered a chicken, shrimp and steak taco. I got home and there was no rice and beans when I called they put me on hold for five minutes to find somebody who spoke English. The woman proceeded to tell me that I didn't order the quesadilla with rice and beans and I said $10 for a straight up quesadilla is ridiculous expensive. She said no I charged you $6.99 for just the quesadilla, then why did she agree with me when I said the quesadilla comes with rice and beans. There is definitely a language barrier if you don't speak Spanish. The quesadilla was OK the chicken taco don't get it, it is dry! The shrimp taco was pretty good the beef taco was extremely chewy. I had a better taco from the truck around the corner! I'm not ever coming back to this place.

Yelp
Ok so ive been craving Mexican tacos for some time now. So while out running to the neighborhood store I smell some awesome food. I didn't know what it was and asked the cashier. He said it's probably that Mexican restaurant a few blocks up. What???? I pull in and instantly know that, yes this is what I've been smelling. I order 3 shredded pork tacos with avocado. After dressing my tacos with alittle salt, jalapeño sauce, a squeeze of lime and add my radishes. I took my first bite and started singing.....Sir Mix a Lot/ Nikki Manji remix OH MY GOD....Becky Lmao I'm through lol #authenictacos #whyhaventibeenherebefore

Yelp
A co-worker told me about the location a while back and I decided to try it out. By far, one of the best and most authentic restaurants I've been to. Everything is fresh and made to order. Tacos are cheap and the tortas are delicious.
google avatar

Weekendgirl G.

Yelp
Good tacos, quick service and cheap prices . I ordered two of the lengua tacos that was good but not great they made them fresh to order and the location is pretty convenient probably wouldn't go again but it's worth a try.
google avatar

Tonya P.

Yelp
Two dollar al pastor tacos and a Coke hecho en Mexico makes me a happy chica. Little tiny counter with a few tables to dine in. Kitchen looked spotless. Great place to stop across the street from Bargain Hunters. This would equal a delightful afternoon.
google avatar

Manny G.

Yelp
Good Tacos!! We ordered chicken, pastor, and asada all were delicious. The best Mexican I've had since we moved to Charlotte. The limes are a little dry and the sauces go bad if left in fridge longer than a day (strong). The place is a hole in the wall but they are clean!

Angelique A.

Yelp
This place has bad customer service lady on the phone hang up on me. Me and my family got 6 chicken tacos and 3 steak tacos , tortillas are dry and old , then missing my grilled onion and peppers. I called about it the lady hang up on me because she knew I was complaining.
google avatar

Michi S.

Yelp
This is a really fast real cheap good food restaurant. Its the second time I visit them and I'll probably become a regular. I love the passion fruit juice and all the food I tried it's well seasoned. It's a real authentic Mexican restaurant.
google avatar

Kheila L.

Yelp
Small place, limited menu but it's authentic mexican and really good

Julie W.

Yelp
Awesome. It was great to see all women working. I saw a picture of someone's food and had to have it. It was as good as it looks.
google avatar

Albe M.

Yelp
Now to say I am NOT a Mexican food fan would be an understatement but my wife is I found this place just by chance and I have fallen in love with it. for me to say that about a Mexican restaurant means an awful lot I highly recommend their food I highly recommend their sauces they are some really nice people and the price is very inexpensive give this one a try and you won't be sorry

Marisol G.

Yelp
I've been to this place and it needs to be better.the chips were really stale and the salsa had no type of flavor and i placed an order for 3 tortas for my kids and the lady totally forgot and I got out of work really tired expecting my kids food so they can eat but when I asked she had already cleaned the stove and said she forgot I was very upset because it wasted my Time I recommend you if you eat here make sure that the person taking the order makes sure they write it down.
google avatar

Taylor D.

Yelp
The food is always delicious and flavorful and I always get that authentic Mexican feel. They have great tacos, quesadillas, and their sopes are amazing. But every time I order take out, the price is different, even though I get the same thing every time. I don't understand why that is.
google avatar

Richard C.

Yelp
Good food, but they ripped me off by bringing an inflated Bill with no itemization. But what am I to do? Nobody speaks English. Lesson learned.
google avatar

Mr S.

Yelp
I love this place tacos are super cheap under $2 a taco. The pastor tacos are the best!! The natural fruit juices are good as well!

Ocracoke Seafood C.

Yelp
Yum!! Other positive reviewers have it covered. Delicious fresh ingredients. Clean and friendly.
google avatar

Cynthia B.

Yelp
The chips are $1 it should be free but not the point of my rant the owner had said in the menu the chips are a $1 ok fine but the waitress gave us the chips first then the menu so obviously I'm not going to check if the chips are a $1 in the menu if the waitress had already put the chips on the table first then the menu so for me I'm automatically thinking the chips are for free and when I'm done with my food they had charged me for a Coca-Cola and I didn't even drink Coca-Cola I had horchata and they had put $1 for chips now I don't care that I had to pay $1 for chips the point is at least let me order the chips if there in the menu not forcing the chips at my table and then making me pay at the register

Bakaih K.

Yelp
This place is BOMB ! So fresh and so filling I could eat here everyday ! And they have good customer service I recommend to anyone looking for good authentic mexican food and the dining area is cozy

M B.

Yelp
Ive lived 5 mins from this place for over a decade. I popped in with a friend for Valentine's Day. Best Mexican food ive had since I lived in Houston. So inexpensive, friendly servers, amazing amazing amazing food. Its smaller and has hole in the wall charm. Not all servers speak English, but they get it done. Sweet and kind. Service was fast. You will smell like a Taqueria when you leave but its well worth it. I had the chicken, shrimp, and steak fajitas, chorizo taco especial, asada burrito, and barbacoa taco especial. They also have a booming take out side it you dont want to sit down. Highly recommend. You will not be disappointed. Also saw some reviews abt hair and poor customer service. its so good idgaf, please replace my plate and im moving on and eating more. That good. Its actually really clean, i sat by the kitchen... its just authentic. Very raw talent cooks. Culturally there are big differences but its worth it. I noted some reviews expect them to have Chik Fil A level Customer Service. Not at all, but after traveling in Latin America its spot on, the food is the customer service. Add the language barrier, but the tacos and fajitas are worth any snags the girls may miss. No matter they were nice and accommodating if you ask. Different cultures, embrace and enjoy what they bring to the table. Leave the frilly expectations at the door
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
Best tacos in town. Period. This little place is a hidden gem. Everything I've had here has met or exceeded expectations. The women that run this place, though a little shy, are always more than accommodating. I am somewhat of a tacos aficionado and have eaten many tacos in many locales... These are some of the best I've had anywhere. The tortas are wonderful, too.
google avatar

Lester P.

Yelp
Asked for one type of taco and they brought out another kind. I didn't want to argue. Will not go back to this place. PS health grade 93.5

Lynn N.

Yelp
Omg I didn't find this place soon enough. I love the tacos. I came back twice in one week! I had the regular season pork tacos that came with cilantro and onion then the next day I came back for the special steak+sausage taco combo that came with lettuce, tomatoes, avocado and cheese, plus 2 regular chicken taco on top. Best authentic tacos thus far!!! I am still craving for more! And their less than $2 per taco!!! Also try the maracuya drink, it's so refreshing.

Miss M.

Yelp
Very authentic and made fresh. Order ahead or be prepared to wait for take out. The burritos are delicious. (Light on the beans though). Not a place for vegetarians.

Bentley R.

Yelp
We went last night for the first time and were fairly impressed. We had cheese dip (yum!) and then tacos. I tried the chicken and the steak and my husband had steak, al pastor, and chorizo. We both were impressed with the food and can't wait to go back to try something else.
google avatar

Jose P.

Yelp
I am usually not the one to write reviews specially not bad reviews but the experience I had today was absolutely the worst. I will fast forward to the part where the waitress brought out the chips and salsa we specifically told her we didn't want any because we didn't want to see them go to waste but she left them on our table either way; we then went ahead and ordered esquites off the menu (corn with mayo, lime, cheese, and chili powder) which costs only $3.95. Our order arrived and it was just corn with mayo because it didn't have any of the other ingredients; we asked the waitress for the chili powder and she said they had ran out, we then asked her for any other hot sauce and she said she didn't have any; we had to ask her again and she then said she did have some hot sauce. We asked her for some limes and more cheese because the order didn't include any of the ingredients. When we finished eating and she brought the check it was $6.20. When I paid I asked what was the extra charge for and the waitress said she was charging us for 1 dollar of chips and 75 cents for the likes which total up to $5.70 so I am still unsure of the other mysterious charge. The point here is not to complain about the money but the terrible service provided at this place. The waitresses are rude and have an attitude, when I asked about the extra charges they were all looking at each other and giving me dirty looks. I am not going to lie and say the food here sucks because it doesn't but the service definitely does and I if I could give it zero stars for that I would.

Shana O.

Yelp
It was just ok. Nothing spectacular. The containers they brought to the table were a bit dirty. The rice and beans tasted like they were not fresh. My husband ordered carne Asada and he said the meat was terrible. We went here because the reviews looked awesome, but were highly disappointed. Oh, and to top it off the Diet Coke cans (because they do not have fountain drinks) were out of date. We will not go back.
