Yelp
My brother in law swears by this place. My brother in law phoned his mother and asked her to specifically bring me to this place for some authentic Mexican Gorditas and Sopes. He said, "John, you have to try this place for yourself and the tell me what you think." I have tried this place several times and now I will share with everyone what I think.
According to their menu (http://taqueriahernandez.letseat.at/menu), "a gordita is best described as a thick corn tortilla pocket stuffed with beans and choice of meat. A sope is a thick tortilla with beans, choice of meat, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. Traditionally, both items are garnished with sliced lettuce, sour cream, and crumbled cheese (cotija)."
As a disclaimer, every time I eat at Taqueria Hernadez, I will only order Sopes and Gorditas. Not because I don't want to try other things on the menu but because this is a specific dish that takes time and is done exceptionally well. The taste of both gorditas and sopes is out of this world. Both sopes and gorditas are consistently crunchy and soft at the same time. You try to describe your first bite and do it justice. Every single bite you take is packed with tons of flavor. Don't forget to be adventurous and try one of their three in-house salsas (light green, green, and red). I usually order three items and they are enough to satisfy my appetite (either two gorditas and one sope or vice versa, two sopes and one gordita). If you are skeptical, try either a sope or gordita individually for yourself.
Finally, the handful of times that I have been here (late afternoon on a weekday, and early evening on a weekend), there is always a crowd. If you are starving, be prepared to wait. The service is not slow, good fodo takes time. Don't be impatient and miss out on this authentic Mexican cuisine experience.
