Long-running, family-owned spot for sopes, gorditas, and weekend menudo on the east side. It’s the kind of everyday taqueria locals rely on—simple plates, house salsas, and plenty of regulars swapping tips at the counter.

The service at this location was very good, and my takeout order was ready in no time. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety on the menu, and overall, I enjoyed the experience. I would definitely consider coming back. However, I did notice that the food didn’t seem as fresh as I had hoped, and there was a small issue with my order: I had requested corn tortillas, but I was given flour tortillas instead. I’m not sure if there was a communication issue or if they simply didn’t hear me clearly, but it wasn’t a major problem. I also ordered an elote to-go, and I have to say it was absolutely delicious — definitely one of the highlights of my order. Additionally, I found their prices to be very competitive compared to other restaurants in the area, which makes it an even more appealing option.

Visited Taqueria Hernandez in McKinney, TX, with a good buddy I hadn’t seen in six months. He’s been a regular since 2008 and knows the hardworking family behind this gem. The restaurant was spotless 🧼, and our waiter was attentive, recommending specials and options—spot on! The food was phenomenal; it felt like grandma’s cooking 👵❤️. I’ll definitely be back with my family on the weekend to enjoy authentic handmade Mexican food 🌮🇲🇽. Highly recommend!

Google
Ordered fajita sopes and tacos (fajita, barbacoa, al pastor). Went next door and ordered mangonada and fresas con crema, and when we got back, the food was already ready. Didn't have a chance to get pictures since they were so good. Green salsa and red salsa were both good. (Red is hotter than green) Overall, would definitely go again.

A nice little hole in the wall with some tasty food. My burrito had a nice flavor, stuffed to the brim to where it fell apart. I will say I asked for no tomato but from the photo, there was a big chunk of it inside. My family enjoyed their chicken tacos and enchiladas. The elote had just a tad too much mayo throughout. The drink selection wasn't much, I ended up with water. The Service was nice and friendly. There seems to be only two servers at night, and the rush was a lot. They got everything out one by one, but in a timely manner. The parking is pretty bad though. We parked across the street at the pawn shop. Overall it's a nice sit down place for a quick bite.

I ordered to go, and the food was out quick. The staff were quick and friendly. The tacos were very good. Al pastor and barbacoa were my favorites.

Google
I was excited to try the food because it looked amazing! However we waited 40 mins just to get a plate of Chilaquiles…We walked out… there was zero communication with the waitress & we had to ask her on an update for the food. Everyone else was getting their food & we were there for a while. Disappointed. We came down the street come to EL POLLO ALEGRE!!! Good food & amazing staff!!!

This place is my secret place to eat real authentic home style Mexican food in McKinney! The food is really good. It’s like a Mexican mom who made food for you. It is seriously affordable and I love coming here. The owner, waiters, and cooks are so nice and they are so hospitable. True Mexican hospitality ♥️ Parking is okay, but if you can’t find a spot out front, there is plenty in the back! Family friendly atmosphere. I recommend 100%.

Yelp
Went with a group of 6 and really enjoyed the food! Very family atmosphere and my enchiladas tasted freshly made! I'm not a refried beans person normally but these were excellent! I have no complaints and the owner was very welcoming and pleasant. Yes, I will go back again!
google avatar

Yelp
Everything was good my only complaint really is that they were out of tortas (I'm assuming the bread) and the Al pastor didn't taste like anything but oil other than that the people were nice and everything else was good! They seemed to have a lot of regular customers, it seemed like every person that came in they knew by name which I liked! It's a little more run down than most places but like they say to never judge a book by its cover! Would have wished they had some sort of music playing it would get awkward in silence at times.

Yelp
Clean, bright restaurant with a wonderful staff cooking and serving authentic Mexican cuisine. I had the Tacos Al Pastor, lengua and barbacoa with a chile relleno plate. It was delicious!

Fred S.

Yelp
Great authentic food that is made to order as you wait. Very personable owner and staff. Took me 9 days to find this small place. Best food I have had in the area.

Yelp
Things finally thawed enough that I decided to try driving, but there were very few places open - Taqueria Hernandez was an exception. The ambiance is classic, old school taqueria. Their prices were excellent and right in line with other taquerias ~$2.50 per taco with the tacos being Mexican street style with 2 corn tortillas, cilantro, onions, radish and lime slices. I ordered pastor, barbacoa, bistec, chorizo, and lengua tacos as well as a gordita and a sope - everything to go. While I had taken orders from my family, it all fell apart once they started trying the tacos. The bistec was for my granddaughter as she is a picky eater, but before I had a chance to explain that, she grabbed the chorizo taco and would not relinquish it (I only got to try a few chorizo crumbs - which were excellent). I was thinking that with 7 pastor tacos, I should be able to claim my 3, but I only got 2 as they were quickly wiped out - very tasty! Fortunately, I got one of the barbacoas and that took care of me. The wasn't fast enough with my camera to capture the lengua before all 4 of them were devoured. The sope and gordita (pastor of course) were huge and an excellent value. I liked them, but my wife was not a fan of the gordita as it had some yellow cheese on it. The service was excellent and they made sure I had water while I was waiting. They also had beers and other things, but I couldn't partake as I had to drive. Taqueria Hernandez was full of nice people, and had great food at a very good value. I would like to go back and try some of their other offerings. If you like authentic Mexican food, you should try it - highly recommended.

Yelp
Best Mexican restaurant in McKinney. Hole in the wall. Good prices. Great quality food. Real deal. Sauces are at the table and ready to add spice or coolness to the dish.

Cyndi D.

Yelp
It was so good. I had to come back 2 days later. If you like authentic TexMex this is the place to be. I tried tacos Verde the first time. I came back for the Huevos rancheros. Both were delicious. I will return!!!

Eddie S.

Yelp
Had the egg and potato breakfast plate with a coffee and water. 100 percent authentic Mexican food. I was completely satisfied. Definitely a hidden Gem. Also staff were nice!

Yelp
Great street tacos! One of my favorites street tacos place. We had lunch during my son's visit. We had taco de lingua, & barbacoa sopes. Loves their sauces, too.

Yelp
This hidden gem of a restaurant tucked away north of downtown mckinney is my new favorite authentic taco spot. Their sauces are so flavorful and the spicy orange one has some heat! The al pastor and steak tacos are my favorite. The service is good however a little difficult since I don't speak spanish. There was a nice man at the counter that spoke english and took our order though. Will come again as the quality, authenticity and price were great. Did not take pics of the food since I devoured them so fast!

Yelp
Great authentic tacos. Wonderfully priced. Warm tortillas. Great presentation. About 2.19 a taco. Highly preferred over gourmet tacos; these at taqueria Hernandez are fulfilling but I would say order 4+ if you're hungry fr fr. They have fruit too so I believe they double with a fruiteria. I haven't tried that yet. My new fav taco spot & I'll be back soon. I bought a jarritos, 7 tacos (chicken and bistec) & spent $20 ($16 before adding the jarrito). The food came up quick enough while I waited. I can't wait wait to go back.
google avatar

Kyle S.

Yelp
Great Mexican food at great prices. I personally had a little trouble ordering as I don't speak Spanish but that speaks to the authenticity.

Yelp
Authentic food and awesome service!! Ambiance is what you expect from a taqueria and we love it!!

SloppyMc_Floppy C.

Yelp
Terrible customer service and way to expensive for what you get, the food was not very good and the portions are small.Ghetto ambiance, it looks like they live upstairs and they have like 5 tips/donation boxes, really money hungry i even got charged a service fee just to eat here.
google avatar

Yelp
A winner the Taqueria Wars. Always friendly and delicious from this clean, hole in the wall. A good lunch with your coworkers or family. I keep coming back for the tacos with the top being: *Barbacoa delicious, moist and a little sweet *Pastor is fantastic. Lightly crisp and perfect flavor. *Lingua is very light, moist and easy. Not crispy. Menu is big enough with tacos, gorditas, tortas (only 3 meat options) , and even menudo, YUM! Nothing fancy with food your family would make. It's that delicious and I enjoy each visit. Gracias

Yelp
Food is wonderful Service is nice Their lengua was especially good. Place feels homey.

Yelp
Found this hidden gem thanks to Yelp and am very glad I did! Located in east Mckinney, it's a small little restaurant next door to a gas station. My husband and I both enjoyed the red enchilada plate, with rice and beans. Only complaint was food wasn't hit when served, just slightly warm. Warning cheese inside enchiladas isn't melted, it's crushed cojita cheese, but they were very yummy. We also enjoyed a few tacos, all pastor and barbacoa, both were good as well. We shared a bistec Gordita and all though it was crunchy (which I love) it was a bit on the bland side. Definitely a place to try and already looking forward to our next 7/15 Tried the fried potato tacos, they are amazing.

Jennifer J.

Yelp
I've been coming since a child, I recommend this place for the horchata and bistec tacos, they're getting pretty stingy with how much meat they put in. But everything is good. Definitely should give it a go!
google avatar

Sadie C.

Yelp
The best authentic Mexican food in town affordably priced and the food is super fresh and delicious. I recommend the enchiladas

Melinda S.

Yelp
the reviews have to be friends and family members. that was the worst authentic Mexican restaurant I ever been too. the food was terrible. the menudo tasted like they used chile powder. that's not authentic. and the chorizo and egg. I've never had chorizo that tasted like that.

Yelp
I love hair in my food, workers who lie to my face and insult me in their native language thinking I don't understand. COVID concerns: No, the workers AND chef did not wear face masks, but customers are required to wear one upon entering. That should've been our cue to leave. I also noticed that the workers didn't immediately clean up a table once the party left. Tacos: I got my usual chicken and barbacoa tacos. Barbacoa was a tad too oily for my taste, it seemed like the barbacoa was quickly put together rather than sitting in the marinade, and it didn't pull apart as it should've. I had a hair in one of my chicken tacos so I tossed both of them. Environment: Skeeeetch..tooown Service: 3 main issues. (1) As we were waiting for our order, I heard the guy who took our order joke with another worker, calling me a "dumb Chinese" - first of all, what...the absolute...fck? On July 13th, 2020 at approximately 7 PM, Kacie's DNA has been verbally altered and the blood that courses through her veins is now 100% pure Chinese. Kacie is now and forever "dumb" cause she was a little indecisive while ordering. Even though she really wasn't given any suggestions. (2) After doing a brief check of my order, I asked if I could get more onions and cilantro on the side. The audacity - this man goes "we don't do that here. We can give you some for $5". Hold up, hold up, hold up. First of all, I've seen photos and reviews of this place, not a single person mentioned FIVE DOLLARS for something that always comes with street tacos? (3) We drove to our next stop and decided to eat the tacos in the car before finishing up our errands. I do my usual "the camera eats first" and noticed a short black hair all tucked underneath the pathetic amount of onions and cilantro on one of my tacos (photo provided). Haven't eaten somewhere this shtty in a very very long time.

Alexander Z.

Yelp
I'm honestly very disappointed and dissatisfied I took a chance and chose to try out Taqueria Hernandez I ordered pastor and bistec tacos but after trying them all I can say is the meat itself had little to no flavor! It pretty much tasted as if it was only seasoned with salt and pepper.... I received a red and green salsa I thought maybe they'd make the tacos taste better or at least give the tacos some flavor but all I can say is the salsa had as much flavor as the tacos. Overall don't bother spending your money here unless you like unseasoned bland food.

Christina R.

Yelp
The food is delicious our favorite is the gordita, they are handmade on the spot, you can hear the clapping and patting as the make them, authentic.

Jaziman C.

Yelp
food was good. The man who took our order was rude, rushed us only to take our order wrong. Also made a big deal that he didn't mess up our order when he did. I feel like he just wanted to argue. As we were leaving he was shouting at us that we owe him money for the missing food item that he failed to annotate correctly. It wouldn't have been a problem to pay, but he decided to be rude about it.
google avatar

Yelp
The Pozole is amazing!! I loved it. Even my picky kid tried it and then stole it from me. The street tacos are also excellent. Just the right seasoning and flavor.

Yelp
My brother in law swears by this place. My brother in law phoned his mother and asked her to specifically bring me to this place for some authentic Mexican Gorditas and Sopes. He said, "John, you have to try this place for yourself and the tell me what you think." I have tried this place several times and now I will share with everyone what I think. According to their menu (http://taqueriahernandez.letseat.at/menu), "a gordita is best described as a thick corn tortilla pocket stuffed with beans and choice of meat. A sope is a thick tortilla with beans, choice of meat, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. Traditionally, both items are garnished with sliced lettuce, sour cream, and crumbled cheese (cotija)." As a disclaimer, every time I eat at Taqueria Hernadez, I will only order Sopes and Gorditas. Not because I don't want to try other things on the menu but because this is a specific dish that takes time and is done exceptionally well. The taste of both gorditas and sopes is out of this world. Both sopes and gorditas are consistently crunchy and soft at the same time. You try to describe your first bite and do it justice. Every single bite you take is packed with tons of flavor. Don't forget to be adventurous and try one of their three in-house salsas (light green, green, and red). I usually order three items and they are enough to satisfy my appetite (either two gorditas and one sope or vice versa, two sopes and one gordita). If you are skeptical, try either a sope or gordita individually for yourself. Finally, the handful of times that I have been here (late afternoon on a weekday, and early evening on a weekend), there is always a crowd. If you are starving, be prepared to wait. The service is not slow, good fodo takes time. Don't be impatient and miss out on this authentic Mexican cuisine experience.

Yelp
Delicious tacos, friendly staff, and fast service. Delicious sauces, especially if you like some heat.

Amanda F.

Yelp
I really like the new little restaurant. It is very clean, and the staff are attentive and friendly. The food in good, and portions are enough for leftovers! We will be coming back soon, it's so much better than fast food.
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
Great authentic Mexican food. The tacos are awesome. My wife loves the pozole. Turning into a Sunday tradition.

Yelp
Was craving a Mexican torta and spontaneously stumbled upon this place on Yelp. Went on a win and we are so glad we did!! The torta hit the spot. We also got the potato tacos and they were also really good. Will definitely be coming back!!

Ken S.

Yelp
We stumbled on this little gem one evening and it was a find! Legit. I'm in town from the RGV and this is RGV kind of food, not your typical texmex at all. Looks to be family operated, super friendly, prompt. The place was clean. Deceivingly large inside. Parking can be an issue. Seems like they have a lot of pedestrian/local traffic. Food was on point. Will definitely return.

Rue A.

Yelp
I drive from Richardson to this restaurant, it's that good! The food and service have always been top notch and the authentic cuisine is something that many restaurants would dream of mastering. I highly recommend and make sure to try the Gorditas and Menudo - yum!
google avatar

Momof4 J.

Yelp
Love the tacos, and the location is very close to us. I do wish they had chips and guacamole though.
google avatar

Avaln B.

Yelp
Delicious tacos, the sopes are wonderful! My go to meat choices are busted, carnitas, pollo and pastor. Horchata is authentic and on point. I also really enjoy the jamaica!
google avatar

Daisy M.

Yelp
When I tell you this place is authentic I mean authentic to the T. Really good pozole, menudo and most of all the gorditas is the best I've ever had here in the states and in MX.
google avatar

Jenny T.

Yelp
I ordered from this location for my husband's 30th birthday! We catered meat by the pound and it fed 20 people! Ordered in advance and their sauces are the bomb! This place is humble and my favorites go to when he gets off work!

Chlöé M.

Yelp
SO much more than a taquería! This places serves amazing home style Mexican food. My husband and I shared a BIG bowl of red pozole (very generously portioned) and loved it. This is possibly the best pozole I've tried in the area. We also had chilaquiles verdes (delish) and a spicy pork with nopalitos special. The coffee is ok, but I suggest ordering an agua fresca or soda instead. My only gripe? They only serve pozole and menudo on the weekend! Can't wait for next Sunday so I can go back.
google avatar

Carlos C.

Yelp
This by far is one of the best authentic Mexican food restaurants I've ate in McKinney! ladies in the kitchen are fast and service is great too. I can't believe it's like a hidden gem in McKinney! I definitely recommend to friends and family
google avatar

Jennifer D.

Yelp
Bright teal taco shop, signs and menu in Spanish, homemade salsa in squirt bottles, telenovela on the TV... all signs of a solid taco shop! Tacos are $1.25 and come with a good amount of meat and cilantro/onion toppings. Highlights are the bistec and al pastor - tender, juicy, perfecto. The barbacoa was more fatty and chunky rather than the slow cooked stringy pieces I'm used to. We learned the gorditas are the specialty here - meat, veggies, sour cream and cheese stuffed into a deep fried shell. Delicious. Shout out to the classic spicy green salsa and the unique sesame based creamy red salsa. Not my type but truly a flavor I've never had before. Will be back for a Jamaica and bistec gordita!
google avatar

Yelp
My brother and I came here for lunch today because I told him that I have been getting mediocre Mexican food in Dallas since being back. He told me this was a hole-in-the-wall place, and the tacos here were good. He was right. The tacos here are delicious! I got the bistec and lengua tacos. SO GOOD! We also got the tostada and gordita. Both were good, but the tacos were better. Btw, when we walked in, there were only Mexicans here. This was a very good sign. Seeing this, I knew then that the food here was legit. Definitely coming back here again!!
google avatar

Yelp
Such amazing people & amazing, REAL good at a good ass price. Love this place. It was my first time there & they have a dessert place right next door

Jaime Q.

Yelp
I will only comment on my experience. My limited experience is takeout for menudo and pozole. I think both are great! I am happy to have found a place that reminds me of home.
google avatar

Eva M.

Yelp
Customer service is a bit slow it gets really packed on the weekends, they could really do some more remodeling to their restaurants rooms, and the parking sucks but overall great food.
google avatar

Briana L.

Yelp
Before this place used to be amazing, and everyone was nice and understanding, now it is horrible the lady was so rude and we found a hair in our rice and beans, the buns on the torta was burnt, and there were no avocados, the Chicken on The Sopes were hard and raw, and on top of all of that it was a 55 minute wait, then we asked if we could have the onions and cilantro on the side and the first thing they do is put onions and cilantro on it

Mj F.

Yelp
Very disappointed with the food and service today. It took them 1 hour to make our chicken enchilada plate! Not ever going back!
google avatar

Saul G.

Yelp
Bad service we waited half an hour for tacos and the coolers were just siting there and when we ordered they served other people that got there after us and they got there food first
google avatar

Jackie C.

Yelp
We had tacos and Gordita de lengua (cow tongue) only because the barbacoa was out after we ordered. But over all it was very good had a great taste.
google avatar

L H.

Yelp
First time in and we ordered a lot. Had to try everything. I'll start with the good- our server was friendly but be warned that not a lot of employees speak English. The torta was the best thing that we had. We ordered one of each taco and it was a 3 out of 5. The lengua was a 5! The horchata was great. The burrito was mehhhh. The menudo tasted great but it was hard to get over the smell. I make menudo and so I have high expectations on the cleaning process. We came when they opened and they brought all the food without cilantro. She said they ran out. Huhhhh? Seemed rotten that they didn't mention it before we ordered because I would let have ordered all the tacos just to have them plain. Irritating. I also don't understand how a taqueria doesn't have excellent salsa and a variety. There is one red and it comes in a ketchup dispenser. Wasn't tasty. Also no pickled carrots here FYI. Parking is tight and there's a few homeless people sleeping behind the restaurant.

Zack W.

Yelp
The food was very good and has been every time I've gone. It takes a little bit to make it but it always comes out hot and fresh. All of the waiters and waitresses have also been very nice and helpful when I've eaten there
