Best Bars and Restaurants in South Lake Tahoe | Eater SF

"Taqueria Jalisco is located in one of South Lake Tahoe’s many mid-century strip malls, but don’t dismiss this gem based on the hole-in-the-wall location. The Mexican food restaurant is quick, authentic, and affordable, complete with a salsa bar, as well as friendly service. The three taco combo with beans and rice is especially satisfying after working up an appetite during a long day on the mountain." - Julie Brown Davis

Best hand made burger in town. It is pricey but worth it. The produce was fresh. The food was hot and the sitting area was clean.

When in need of a quick bite, this is my go to! Easy to get to on 16th and I always find parking. On my most recent visit, I had chicken soft tacos. So yummy and I poured on top the owners most recent creation-a salsa that added a bit of a punch. So delicious. Of course, I'll be back.

Google
Best burgers in town!! My coworkers and I went to all the local burger joints and hands town Taqueria Jalisco takes the win!

After checking in to my hotel I decided to look for somewhere to eat and this place caught my eye because of the sign that says "worlds greatest michelada". Let's just say I've had better at non latino restaurants. I ordered tacos and non of the salsas were spicy. Which is a huge disappointment for a taqueria.

I've stopped going to fast food spots for their expensively small bland meals. Taqueria Jalisco has the flavor. The price is right and the atmosphere is great. I ordered the Deluxe nachos with carne asada and the papa (California) burrito. Menu as of 7/24/24. Support delicious businesses.

Google
Relaxed atmosphere with amazing burgers and incredible street tacos. Everytime I go staff is so welcoming and helpful. I'm not usually big on sauces but their homemade salsa and guacamole are a must have!

Google
I’ve been coming here years years and the food is authentic and cooked fresh on the spot. Only place in Sacramento that you can get a delicious juicy dripping burger and tacos at the same time. Outside patio is small but doable, flys are ready to eat as well. On a good note my #1 spot for all your taco/burger cravings

I know things are expensive. I know it's more expensive renting a store front downtown. But nothing explains this! My 3 taco order came up to be about $15. These were the smallest tacos I've ever eaten. It looks like they use Pringles chips size tortilla to make them. In addition, they use these smaller boxes to make the to-go box look full. I had received 7 chips in total! These people are trying to save money on chips y'all! The food wasn't that impressive either. Tasteless but spicy!

Yelp
Absolutely amazing food, friendly staff, and quick service. Four of us ordered a pile of dishes and they had it ready in less than 10 minutes. We're visiting Sac from Hawaii on a Mexican food R&D trip and out of the five spots we've visited TJ was our favorite. Sauces are insane. Owner Danny came out to chat with us. He told us the story of how he got started, and how much he values those that work with him. Mahalo for your time and an awesome lunch, Danny!

Yelp
I don't usually leave one-star reviews, so if I'm doing it, there's a reason. First, the prices are way too high for what you get. I'm sorry, but almost $20 for a burrito? That's ridiculous, especially when the food isn't great. I was shocked when I ordered a quesadilla and saw the price--it definitely wasn't worth it. Another issue is that their hours are unreliable. They don't keep their "Open" sign on when they're actually open, and I've shown up during their posted hours only to find them closed. On top of that, the location isn't easy to access, and for what they charge, the customer service and food quality should be much better. Even at high-end Mexican restaurants, the prices aren't this steep, so I don't get why this small taco shop is charging so much. I've given this place three chances, but it's never impressed me. I always try to be fair before writing a review, but I just don't see a reason to go back.

Yelp
Very overpriced!! $19 torta, and they charged me extra for a different cheese (without mentioning the additional charge). Thought maybe it would be really big or super tasty, but really it was average size and below average taste. Also, this place closes at 7pm most days of the week. They literally close at peak dinner hour, it makes no sense.

Yelp
I was trying to find a decent place for lunch near the Convention Center, but sadly, this place fell short of my expectations. There was a lot of speculation and mixed reviews, but since I was in town, I had to try it out for myself with my friend next to me. First things first: the location of this taqueria is quite in a sketchy neighborhood, north of all the other places within Downtown Sacramento. In addition, the parking is not sufficient enough, and quite small that it took me three times to get out of the parking lot on its own. The service was very well kept, as they were attentive without being intrusive, ensuring that everything goes smooth and enjoyable. They are knowledgeable about the menu and more than happy to provide recommendations, catering to both regulars and newcomers with equal enthusiasm. The promptness with which orders are taken and delivered exemplifies their commitment to maintaining a high standard of service. However, the culinary experience at Taqueria Jalisco was marred by the oversalting of their tacos al pastor. The marinated pork, while perfectly cooked and tender, was overshadowed by an excessive amount of salt that detracted from the dish's rich flavors. This misstep overshadowed what could have been a flavorful representation of classic Mexican street food. Additionally, some diners noticed that other items could benefit from a better-balanced seasoning approach. Despite the flavorful salsa selection and well-prepared sides, the main attraction should showcase balanced and harmonious tastes. Nonetheless, the inviting atmosphere and commendable service make Taqueria Jalisco a notable spot, one that could truly shine with more attention to seasoning intricacies.

Yelp
$20 for a Taco Bell sized burrito. Do I need to say more? First and last time ever eating here.

Yelp
My friends and I heard about this place on TikTok and figured we'd give it a try! Taqueria Jalisco is very unassuming on the outside like all the best places are. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by the friendly staff who took our orders. This place has plenty of seating on either side of the front counter, which is great. I ordered the veggie burrito - which came with rice, beans, lettuce, guac, pico, and peppers. It also came with a chips and a side of salsa - which was delicious. The burrito itself was good but nothing extraordinary. I wish it was grilled because the tortilla got soggy pretty quickly after getting it. My friend ordered the veggie quesadilla and was not too impressed. Overall, we had a pleasant experience but I will definitely keep looking for better Mexican food in Sac.

Yelp
My favorite local spot! Every time I've gone here the service is always so nice and quick. I've gotten their burritos and tacos before which are yummy but my favorite is their taco salad. It has a great mix of everything and the shell is always spot on! They have a nice outdoor area so you can get a beer, some good food, and relax. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Duane L.

Yelp
Got plenty of outdoor seating and its own little parking lot Ordered a carne asada quesadilla. Had more of a Pico de Gallo filling. I liked it. Interestingly they have a famous burger. Will try next time if I'm around the area
google avatar

Xavier P.

Yelp
We ordered 2 asada tacos, burrito and an horchata. The tacos didnt have anything on it when we told them to put everythin on it and when we asked if they had a large horchata they said no then said yes and gave us a slightly bigger cup but charged us for 2 drinks. Besides this the food was great!! The meat was seasoned very well n had a good taste to it
google avatar

Norm L.

Yelp
This place has outside seating, fair prices and authentic food. The crispy chicken tacos were really good and the papa burrito was okay (alittle too mushy for me- i want to taste the fries and steak more). I'll definitely come back to try their "famous" burger.
google avatar

Carlos Augusto Z.

Yelp
Food and service were outstanding, this taco restaurant has a full service bar! The owner is so personal and he makes you feel very special, like you are part of the regulars family
google avatar

Natasha B.

Yelp
Ordered two burgers with fries - while waiting for food heard and saw the cashier clipping his fingernails at the register. . .. The burgers were really good but kinda reluctant to eat them given the cashier was cutting his fingernails in the same room the food was being made. Yeah. We got one order of fries and wasn't given much either. Didn't seem like a full side of fries. Eat at your own risk?

Yelp
After years and years of driving by this place and then finding out it was a friend's absolute favorite Mexican spot in Sacramento, I knew it was time to check out Taqueria Jalisco! This is a solid option for Mexican/American eats on the grid. I went with a group of friends on a week night around 5:30-6ish. We were all able to get spots in the lot, but there is ample street parking (you'll likely have to parallel park if this is the case). When we pulled up, there were lots of take-out orders, but we had plenty of options for where to sit (all outdoor patio seating). One of the employees came out frequently to make sure that we didn't need anything wiped down and that our seating was ok. 5/5 stars for attentiveness and friendliness! Several members of our party ordered the taco salad (our friend who comes here often said it's her favorite) and it looked great. The rest of us asked for recommendations from staff. The owner was working the window and was so kind and helpful. His first question was about how hungry I was, which I feel like is the absolute best first question. He steered me away from some big plates when I told him I wasn't absolutely starving. He recommended I get the street tacos and picked the al pastor, carnitas, and carne asada for me to try. Sooooo good! My absolute favorite was the al pastor. The flavor was fantastic. I loved it so much that I ordered 4 more to go so that I could bring some home for my husband to try (he also loved them). Bonuses: When they serve street tacos, they throw a few tortilla chips on the side. It's genius for catching the pieces that fall from your tacos! I'm usually looking for a fork to scoop those bits up. The margarita is LEGIT. Nothing frilly about it, just the important bits. The owner and I chatted tequila and I let him know that it was perfection. This is how margaritas should be. The owner told me that he's been there for thirty years and I hope he's there for another thirty more at least! Go check out Taqueria Jalisco!

Yelp
Actually this place is not good at all. So bland. I can't believe this place is so expensive for what you get. It honestly blows my mind and keeps me up at night.

Brian S.

Yelp
A $17 Takeout Burrito!? I was a bit surprised when the rang my Pastor burrito up but I gave it the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it'll be amazing or massive. Nope, neither. It was average size and the pastor was mediocre at best. To add to the insult, they add a lot of rice and lettuce as a filler to take up the space where meat and beans should be.
google avatar

Yasmine S.

Yelp
Everytime I go here the food is amazing and the service is A1!! They play good ass music too which is such a good touch to a good taqueria!! Everything was yummy and left me full!!
google avatar

Stephanie V.

Yelp
Second time here and it's delicious! Definitely coming back, good food, great customer service, and a nice clean spot to eat outside..
google avatar

Catrina R.

Yelp
If I could give this place 0 stars I would. I was placing an order and just as I finished placing my order, the very rude cashier told me let's hurry up please. Mind you I had only been placing my order for about a minute or so. I said excuse me what did you say to me, he said let's hurry up. His reason because a surge of customers just walked up maybe 30 seconds into me placing my order. Food may be good. But not at the expense of VERY RUDE SERVICE. This small business doesn't deserve anyone's money with that type of attitude.
google avatar

Trev K.

Yelp
Taqueria Jalisco has consistently served the best Mexican food on the grid. The tacos, quesadillas...even the cheeseburger is fantastic. (Don't sleep on the burger!) Parking can be tight, and depending on the weather you may want to choose to get it to go. (Seating is only outside)
google avatar

Ruben R.

Yelp
Ordered a super burrito that cost almost 18.00? Included inside rice, beans, lettuce why? And small portion of meat inside. No sour cream? No avocado? The only thing good was I didn't get sick. The burrito is over priced and mediocre at best. One star for now getting sick rating. Owner needs to lower the price and include avocado / sour cream and remove the lettuce burritos should not have lettuce in them.

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
Closed and has been for a while their website has been suspended! Most of the Mexican restaurants in Downtown Sac are closed.
google avatar

Faith B.

Yelp
i LOVE coming here! great staff and great food! i would order at least twice a week last year lol. but now tacos have gone to $5 each... just a basic street taco. that breaks my heart. 12 tacos was $75. it's not really in my budget anymore unfortunately to feed my family of 5 and everyone gets some. definitely more of a splurge for me but i'll still be coming back every so often! just unfortunately not multiple times a month anymore. not their fault
google avatar

Carlo E.

Yelp
Good location, friendly staff and a good clean restaurant. However, the tacos were bland and the price for 4 tacos was $20 which is outrageous. I understand inflation is a thing but that's ridiculous. For that price i expected something that didn't taste that bland . It came with complementary chips but I can't recommend something so boring .

Yelp
I saw this place on Tik Tok, and had to try it out. I mainly came for the burger that I had heard about, but also ordered a few other items. I met the owner at the window, he was taking orders. He seemed like a nice guy and has been in this location forever. The food overall was good. We ordered the burger and fries, a steak burrito a bean and cheese burrito for my daughter and a couple sodas. The quality of the food, the ingredients and the flavors were all top notch, no complaints there. The down side is the price was a little high, for the amount of food that we got. Everything that I ordered was just under $70. Im glad I tried it out, and if I was in the area, I would definitely eat here again, but there are a lot of options for that price range.
google avatar

Luv H.

Yelp
Lunch time! This place was a cool little joint. The people are awesome! Order 2 crispy taco and crispy taco is only chicken, and it off the menu. It's was delicious but I wish they would offer it by choice of meat. It's is a little pricey bit more cause it a small business but consider these day with price inflation and tough times. I'll definitely come back to try out more stuff on the menu.
google avatar

Dave M.

Yelp
Serving jury duty and when we took the lunch break I figured I'd visit Taqueria Jalisco again. Must have been 10 years since we biked there for lunch from UCD Health. Friendly service and fantastic food as before. I had a couple carne asada street tacos which were served beside a couple very juicy lime quarters. Ate on the west side this visit and really enjoyed sitting at the very long table. Always clean and inviting. An excellent meal! Stop in and try them out!
google avatar

Jerel O.

Yelp
I heard about the burger, so that's what I came for. I was 3rd in line and the 2 people in front of me ordered the burger. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and a drink. I wanted fries, but I'm broke. Got it and the guy asked me if I wanted a refill on my drink. Who does that? Most places hope you don't ask for a refill, let alone offer it. I ate it in my car with the AC on. It's too hot to eat outdoors in Sac right now. Burger was good, staff was nice. Maybe next time I'll try some Mexican food.

Barry H.

Yelp
High price, not much food. Got their burrito, which goes for $17.00 dollars. Added some guacamole and cheese, that brought the price up to $20.00 plus tax. I'm thinking I'll get a big burrito for that price. Nope. Very average to smallish burrito with not much meat (pastor) and exactly seven tortilla chips in the to go container. I could literally fit two of their burritos inside one super burrito at the Mexican place near my house and the super burrito at the place near my house costs $11.99 and is just as high quality as Taqueria Jalisco. Definitely a gyp.

Roman R.

Yelp
Great food, awesome owner. Highly recommend! I have my new spot. The Verde wet was spor on!

Heidi G.

Yelp
Carne asada tacos were fire but the birria tacos were okay. The meat was very thick and not juicy.
google avatar

David V.

Yelp
Great cheeseburger, only bad thing would be how insanely expensive it is. The burger was greasy, but in a good way
google avatar

Gabby M.

Yelp
TLDR: Papas Cali burrito is great just don't choose to look at the price. I've been here three times and only once were they open when the hours said so. -I ordered their version of a Cali burrito and it does the job. It's a larger burrito which is nice. I thought the flavor was good especially on the potatoes. -I'd love to go more often but there's not even an online place I can see if they decided to shut down on a normal open day. -small parking lot and outdoor food court style seating.

John B.

Yelp
Food is fantastic. People are great. Love the ease of online ordering, and being able to customize everything.

David B.

Yelp
I introduced my mom to Taqueria Jalisco we had the street tacos and the crunchy tacos chicken and a order of Deluxe nachos, We met the owner Danny he introduced himself told us about the history of his family. The service was excellent. My mom enjoyed the restaurant it had great atmosphere and ambiance. It was a nice lunch downtown. Will be back
google avatar

Phillip K.

Yelp
This place has great service, very friendly. I ordered the Downtown Burrito with Carnitas, and a side of chips and salsa. They were very generous with the chips and salsa. I think the fire salsa is my favorite. It's not very spicy, but just right to pour on the burrito. The establishment is a quaint little walk up eatery with outdoor seating. Definitely a must stop and eat place. Plus: I spoke to the owner who told me his mother opened the place in the 70's and he took over in the 90's, so it's definitely Sacramento history!
google avatar

Teri B.

Yelp
Good good! My favorite is an Al Pastor tostada. Easy to order online for pickup or eat outdoors on their covered patio.
google avatar

Adi G.

Yelp
My favorite are the crispy chicken tacos and the burger!! Both delicious options! Their salsa is also great
google avatar

Natalia S.

Yelp
Ten out of ten every single time, I swear. Always fresh food, cold drinks, good vibes. Family owned and operated and a Sacramento gem! The burgers are really yummy - Mexican American cuisine in the heart of capitol city. Across the street from The Washington Neighborhood Center!
google avatar

Cindy M.

Yelp
Crispy chicken tacos at Taqueria Jalisco are my new favorite! Delicious. Crispy Chicken Tacos

Cory A.

Yelp
I got nachos. It was okay. I feel like everything came from the grocery store out of a bag or can. It cost $18. I got a michelada too. It was watered down. My total was $35.89 (that might include tip) I just think it's all overpriced. It was very middle of the road. Paying $10 for the nachos and $10 for the Michelada would probably be okay, but somehow I feel like that's still high lol
google avatar

Chris T.

Yelp
I thoroughly enjoyed the carne asada downtown burrito. Add guacamole to mine which was great. A bit pricy at $18 (with the $2 guacamole addition) but it did come with a handful of chips and salsa. Burrito hit the spot and I would return. Little hot, but the shaded seating was a nice reprieve from the sun. Window service was very friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Dalia R.

Yelp
Ahorita es mi favorita Taqueria! La carne la hacen deliciosa. Me encantan los burritos de al pastor To my surprise, they sell King Cong Brewery beers! I love to support a local brewery

Latif Y.

Yelp
Taqueria Jalisco is one of the best Mexican/American food restaurant in North 16th Street. Good, wholesome food and very reasonable prices. Don't forget to ask the Big Boss Danny to make you his special lemon/soda/ice special soft drink. Delicious.
google avatar

Kaye E.

Yelp
It's never too hot for tacos! Pulled up for some much needed comida after a hot day at concerts in the park downtown! Showed up towards the end of the day (near closing) and the food was STILL fresh and on point! Danny's service is always a PLUS! Next time you're in mid town EAT A TACO! Items Tried: Carne Asada Tacos Carnitas Tacos Al Pastor Tacos Downtown Burrito (Carne Asada)
google avatar

Jackson T.

Yelp
I've been here several times now and never been disappointed. The food is top notch and authentic. I only found out about this place since I live a few blocks away. When I first came here, I ordered the papa burrito (their version of the CA burrito) and it was decent. The beans were a different touch to what I'm used to. Still a very solid burrito. It filled me up and I could barely finish it. Second time I came here, I got the carne asada fries. This was delicious as well. One of the better ones I've had. My friend got the downtown burrito and liked his food as well. Third time, I wanted to try their hamburgers since I heard they were good. It's true. I got the bacon cheeseburger and there was a good amount of bacon, cheese, meat and chopped lettuce. The buns were thick and soft (similar to what squeeze inn uses). I really liked this Burger. The fries were good as well. It had a nice crispy exterior. Overall, solid place for Mexican food. I only took off a star due to a "Covid Surcharge".
google avatar

Joshua M.

Yelp
This is my favorite taqueria anywhere. Every time I'm in town I have to get it. The service is great, their chicken is seasoned to perfection, and the whole place is a vibe!

Debbie Z.

Yelp
I used to love this restaurant before it changed hands. They used to cook the shrimp for tacos perfectly. Now the shrimp is overcooked. Also, the Fabuloso that they use to clean completely overwhelms the place and makes me sick. I can't go in there anymore, even if the cooking was the same. Please consider the cleaning fumes. That Fabuloso is awful.

Nazary K.

Yelp
Amazing food. Best taco spot in all of downtown. Customer service is 10/10. I have never liked crunchy tacos but I'm excited to come back for the crunchy chicken tacos. Recommend this spot to anyone. Worth the drive if you live far away

Jason M.

Yelp
Terrible food! No flavor, rude service. I ordered a "Super Burrito". Super Burritos always come with sour cream, guacamole, and cheese in addition to the main components. This $16 burrito did NOT. They wanted to charge me an additional $6 for those after the fact. So I asked for a refund - they refused. DO NOT GO!
