The food was tasty, everything was very flavorful.
The Horchata was perfect, I'm very impressed with it - layered flavors, the perfect amount of cinnamon, and not overly sweet.
We got the 5 taco special with Spicy Pork, 2 Horchatas to drink, the Pork Carnita Quesadillas, and the Chile Relleno meal with beans and rice.
This is probably the first time in almost 10 years that both my husband and I completely forgot to inquire about Gluten-Free options. I think we were both thrown off by the fact that it is raining really hard tonight and we could barely hear them speaking to us through the pouring rain.
We are also both unusually tired; it's been an especially long week and we've worked even harder than usual this week, which is saying a lot since we are both very hard workers.
So, I'm praying I don't flare really badly. I ate almost none of any of the tortillas, which appear to be flour-based. If I do flare, we have no one to blame except for ourselves! (Gluten has the potential to cause a very painful flare-up of my medical condition.)
Because it was raining so hard, we were not going to be eating our dinner outdoors, so we got take-out. We live pretty close to this location, only about a 15-minute drive away. However, my husband, who is extremely hard to please (trust me, I know... he always says that he likes it that I have "high standards", but his own standards are stratospheric really... if he was an active yelper he'd probably give almost every place 1, 2, or 3 stars!), complained that his Horchata was just "okay," his quesadillas didn't have enough cheese in them, and that the food was practically cold by the 15 minutes that it took for us to get it home. (It wasn't warm; I'll give him that.)
We were super hungry when we got home and we didn't want to go back out, so I was sort of digging in the quesadillas and the tacos to get the filling out, trying not to get much (if any) of the tortillas. We ended up sharing both meals and the one appetizer.
I had requested the spicy pork tacos and my husband had requested the pork carnita quesadillas, but I liked the texture and the flavor of the pork carnita quesadillas much better than the flavor and the texture of the spicy pork. I love pulled pork, and the texture of the pork carnita quesadillas was pretty similar to that.
I am a little bit confused by my spicy pork taco meal. The filling itself is quite fresh and flavorful, but it isn't "spicy" really at all, by itself. But when I unthinkingly (I guess we're really not thinking today!) took a HUGE bite of the pepper, I almost immediately regretted it. It pretty much practically burned my mouth off, haha. I ate literally almost the entire pepper in one bite; I can usually handle spicy peppers pretty well (unless they're habaneros or something 4-5 stars+, in which case, no thank you). However, this pepper was the exception to that rule.
My mouth was in pain for about 10 minutes as I decided which things to drink in order to calm it down (water definitely didn't cut it; the horchata helped a little bit; we live on 100% fresh-pressed cherry juice and we always have some in our fridge, and that actually cut the pain a lot, finally).
I would go again and I would recommend this place. If I went again, I would take tiny bites of the pepper and eat bites of the pork tacos along with those tiny bites of the pepper, which would most likely make the tacos delightfully and tolerably spicy. If I went again, I would also remember to check Gluten-Free options.
