Where to Eat, Stay, and Play in Mérida, Mexico

"To eat like a local, look no further than Taqueria La Lupita, adjacent to the street food mecca of Parque de Santiago which is lined with vendors slinging tortas and ceviche. Watch the kitchen carve pork from the bone and nestle it in a homemade tortilla."

What to Do in Mérida, Mexico in the Yucatán

"Arriving early, I jumped into the local cuisine at Taquería La Lupita in the Mercado de Santiago, one of the city’s best purveyors of cochinita pibil; Yucatecos like hearty breakfasts and things start to sell out by 1:00 PM. I also loved the lechon tortas topped with chicharrones that are crunchier than a potato chip, and I sampled the agua de chaya, the region's ubiquitous green juice made with a wild, spinach-like green." - Scarlett Lindeman Scarlett Lindeman Scarlett Lindeman is a chef, writer, and researcher based in Mexico City, Her work covers Mexican cuisine, foodways, and culture. Delicious, great prices, quick service, and one of the best cochinita pibil of our trip. The recado negro was a bit dry, not my favorite here. Carne asada is pork here (vs beef in the states) and it was delicious. The empanadas are fried up fresh and made with all corn masa, no wheat flour.

Amazing food at amazing prices! One of the best places I've been to for tacos in Merida. They loaded up the pork like crazy and it was totally fulfilling. Also the torts de carne asado 🤌🏻

I came with a single mission to Parque Santiago. I needed my "fix" of Relleno Negro, a Yucatecan specialty. I was not disappointed. The flavor was spot on, the meatball was perfect and the broth was as black as the moonless night. Charred peppers never tasted so good.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this review. 3 years ago I ate here for the first time. And 2 years ago I went back —the food was without question the best lechón and Cochinita in Merida. Sadly, those days are gone. The food today is average, well prepared and with okay seasoning ( before it was 5stars, today 2.5 to 3.0 stars today ). There used to be a line to sit down, now there are plenty of empty tables—that is the only unsolicited improvement that this restaurant has seen in the past 2 years, but it is an unwelcome one. The service is awful, inexperienced rude teenagers that don’t know how to manage a table, nor do they care for it. They seem bothered when you ask for information or inquire about your plate; they can’t serve all plates a the same time, it is also sorely apparent that no one is running this restaurant as there is no communication or coordination on sight. The prices are still affordable, but they have jacked up the price significantly from before. ( from about 15 pesos, to 25 pesos per taco, an understandable change since this is a macroeconomic event that is outsides a Taqueria’s fault) In short, the charm this lovely venue once had is all but gone. You will probably leave wondering why someone recommended this place (sorry, it might have been me before today). My recommendation is to ask locals for a better spot—this place is in its late deteriorating phase of its business life and no longer worth the visit. Sorry Lupita, you were my favorite must-go spot, but today I fear was my last visit.

Google
Best meal we had in Merida. We waited for probably 15-20 mins in line before getting a table as this is the place to go! We got the cochinita pibil tacos , relleno negro tacos and cochinita pibil torta. They were all so flavourful and delicious. The pibil is so Smokey and sweet.

Get the pork roll - it’s heavenly and only $40 pesos. The chia de limon is also delicious!

Google
Yessss! Had my favorite salbute of my entire trip through Yucatan at this place. Also I’m always a huge fan of local markets. This was fun!

Google
Most unique and original experience for local fast food. The best option is to arrive early as it opens at 8 am but demand is so high you may not find all of their variety of dishes by 10 am. You may need to wait no longer than 15 minutes in the line as it is big but it's demand is over their available tables. Totally worth it!

Yelp
THE BEST TACOS IN MERIDA - At least that is what I heard, so when we came here obviously I had unfairly high expectations. But, believe it or not, two of the tacos easily surpassed them. The Lechon taco was the most tender, succulent, and moist pork taco I've ever had and with just a touch of smokiness, on delicate tortillas with the added habenero salsa, it was perhaps the perfect taco. You will struggle to outperform this taco. Not that the Cochinita Pibil didnt try! It too was tender with delicate flavors and unparalleled balance, a taco masterpiece in its own right! The other tacos we had were good but these were superb! They also had the best pepino limon agua fresca I've ever tried, a perfect balance of lime and cucumber, with enough pulp from both to give the beverage an amazing textural experience to complement it's amazing taste! Located inside the marketplace on the corners of Calle 57 and Calle 70, just get there early as they close at 1pm... And if you miss this you won't know what you missed so I will tell you. You are missing what may be the best taco in Merida! Happy eating fron John Sito!

Yelp
Recommended by many people, our first try. located in the Santiago market food was a perfect introduction to the Yucatán cuisine. Long lines but many tables so a ver short wait. The server was attentive and helpful. Located in the market it was more of a local dining spot, nothing fancy but delicious! I had the sopa lima and empanada chaya y queso. Sopes was delicious with a great balance of flavor, not over powered with the lime. The empanada was cooked perfect! Not at all greasy!! This was my first exposure to Chaya and I loved the flavor it brought to the culinary party I was tasting.

Yelp
Went here Wednesday at around 8:45am The place was busy but I was able to find a seat (sit at the table with blue cloth) waitress andris? She was very nice and Took my order. I got a Lechon Al Horno Torta and a Coke. The wait was not long at all. The torta was the best I had so far and the meat was succulent. Would definitely recommend to give this place a try. 10/10

Yelp
Definitely a must try! After seeing a few YouTube vloggers recommend this spot, we had to try it! We had the torta de cochinita, the empanada de queso and taco de lechon. All so authentic and delicious

Yelp
I had seen several food programs and youtube videos featuring this taco spot, so I knew we needed to try it while in Merida. It was a holiday when we went so most of the market was closed, but some restaurants were still open. This place has a super long line. We got tacos de cochinita pibil. They were very simple but the meat was juicy and delicious. We ate them outside on a bench due to no space left inside. I recommend trying this place at least once.

Yelp
As seen on Netflix taco chronicles (pibil episode)! This little taco spot is in the Santiago plaza. Everything is cheap and they pack the tacos full of meat. We ordered one of each type of taco and also ordered the huevos montelenos. All the tacos were good but the relleno negro was the best! It's worth trying the tacos but I wasn't a fan of the huevos. The peas and ham were definitely canned so it didn't taste fresh. Overall it was good but not amazing. We also got sick so beware because the smaller cafeteria type restaurants seem to have less access to clean bathrooms/consistent hand washing. They were following covid restrictions in terms of masks but the table salsas were shared so you have to ask for new ones.

Yelp
Go where the locals go - here. Always crowded and known for their lechon. The pork is moist and sitting in it's own juice and fat. They also have grilled turkey, turkey in negro sauce, breaded steak and metro Relleño soup. This is located inside the market. There are many places selling the exact same thing but this place was the most crowded and busy. The food was incredible and the prices were the lowest we've paid during our stay in Merida. I recommend the lechon de horno. It's the roasted juicy moist pork topped with a crunchy pork rind. The combination is music in the mouth. Get it on a taco, torta, tamale or salbute (soft puffy fried corn shell) PROS: Lechon Prices Salbute Eating with locals

Yelp
Went there during the week when the market was shutting down for the day. I didn't think that much of it compared to other yelp reviewers and can't recommend a visit here.

Yelp
Super inexpensive and the food is amazing. If you go during the weekend their might be a long wait. However it is worth it. I tried the taco pibil as well as the panucho de pibil and they taste amazing. Their salsa is spicy and tasty. Recommend. During our visit we came here three times!

Yelp
Man, I loved this little taco spot. They were open very early so I stopped for breakfast tacos. It is located inside the market in a covered hallway. Service was fast and friendly. I tried all the different meats they offered on the tacos and enjoyed all of them, but the lechon was my favorite. It was so nice to get the juicy pork with the crispy skin in top. The food was very reasonably prices. I would highly recommend this spot for breakfast tacos.

Yelp
Unassuming place that seems more like a local than tourist spot on the edge of a quiet square. Not sure if this is the Netflix-famous La Lupita, but it doesn't matter. Some of the best tacos ever. Cochinita pibil was seriously good.
