The food is authentic and delicious! The food is super sized and the salsa is one of a kind. I thoroughly enjoyed eating at this restaurant and I couldn’t recommend a better stop for supreme Mexican cuisine

Rachel O

Google
Food is fire here and their salsas are always delicious. I’ve been going here since high school and the food has always been delicious and generous portions. Just had the Al pastor plate with horchata. $17 and change. Cute space to eat at.

Google
Massive SUPER $13.50 burrito that I should have cut in half and saved for another meal. But I was foolish and ate the whole damn thing! The Al pastor contains some fat which drips, but the meat is delicious (fat is sweet), and they are very generous with the meat. I’ll try the carnitas next visit. Solid burrito. No wonder they’ve been here for decades. Metered parking lot across the street. Owner is very kind. Please take it easy on the lady who has some health issues and isn’t always herself. Update: next visit, got the carnitas super burrito this time, but the volume was not the same as first visit when the owner served us. Considerably less meat compared to previous visit, perhaps depending on the chef. Guac and sour cream uneven throughout. Nachos are huge. Good chips. Friendly service, though.

Google
I ordered a quesadilla and a few other things. Key issue - there was a long piece of METAL in my food! Seriously?!?! I don't care about the guacamole being mid, but this meal was disgusting because of a PIECE OF METAL IN MY FOOD!

Kate Stanton

Google
I had inquired about a catering order on their website. They emailed me with the order, I did not confirm this order with them. I decided to go somewhere else. I was called the day of our meeting with someone asking me for a credit card. I never confirmed the order with them but was treated like I had. The person on the phone was doing his best to make this my fault, that they conduct their business on the honor system and that was enough for them to think this order had been placed. I have never been treated like this by a caterer, he told me that this wasted food was also my fault, went on talk about the business climate etc. I was completely offended by how this person spoke to me. He said this stinks and hung up on me. We have a lot of business in the bay area, this is disappointing to see how they treat potential customers.

Google
As you can see from the photos I love the nachos. I go with my family but when my nachos come I’m like ‘na-chos, amigos’. They’re piled high with all the fixings - refried beans, melted cheese, carne asada, guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, and when I’m feeling dangerous - jalapeños. But the best part is the flavor. These nachos are so good I look forward to licking my fingers after I clean the plate. Speaking of plate - you gotta ‘eat-in’ if you get them, because they don’t hold up too well for take-out. For to-go I recommend the carne asada super burrito or quesadilla suiza. In any event, take out or eat in, check out La Morena, you won’t be disappointed.

Google
Came here for the first time, food is very good . Never had huevos rancheros, I had it for the first time here it was very delicious. All staff are very kind and always make sure im satisfied. They even gave my kid a quarter for the toy machine, I'll definitely come back if im ever around here .

Google
Taqueria La Morena has some of the best Mexican cuisine that I have ever tasted. They had a large vegetarian offering, and the food was fresh and authentic. The prices were cheap, and the service was very quick. Extremely good food that I recommend to everyone!

Yelp
This place is fabulous ! The rice and beans are Heaven sent ! The cooks really work to make this Place go ! No messing around ... upstairs, downstairs , friendly atmosphere, old school . Just what the Doctor ordered ...

Yelp
Been going here for decades. Food is always spot on. I love their carnitas. Plates are huge. Plenty of seating and there is usually parking available nearby. This spot is a local favorite.

Yelp
Food was decent, but there are much better options around SF. We ordered the regular shrimp burrito, super carne asada burrito and the half order of carne asada nachos for takeout. The inside is spacious and clean, but you can tell most people pick up and go. The shrimp burrito was good, but only had a 3-4 shrimps. I did also order a super and they gave me a regular instead. Again not the worst, but not what I was expecting. The carne asada nachos were soggy. The meat was flavorful but as I kept eating everything became mush on the fork. We ordered the half order and it was definitely enough to share with 2-3 people. The carne asada super burrito was flavorful and very filling. The salsas are very spicy!

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch and got the carne asada plate. It was really good and they are generous with portions, definitely would stop by here again

Yelp
We always come here for a quick bite to eat when we're starving for lunch after 2 pm. We ordered the 1/2 carne asada and 1/2 al pastor nachos . It's been a while since we came here and the nachos blew us away. What a generous serving but we managed to finish it all. Oink, oink! Thumbs up to La Morena!
google avatar

Richard Z.

Yelp
Ordered take out. Had the Super Burrito Chile Colorado. I did not know it was pork and not beef. Online didn't say what meat. Even then the pork was not good. The salsa was also very watery in my opinion but the salsa verde was good. The quesadilla was decent.
google avatar

Ron B.

Yelp
Good food, generous port. Shared a chicken plate and there was plenty for two. Friendly staff, prompt food delivery. Plenty of seating and upstairs seating as well. Thankfully open on New Year's Day.

Yelp
First time with my coworkers and we loved the food we ordered. There were a lot of people in front of us but everyone's order was taken pretty quickly. I ordered Torta and it was delicious and juicy. We also go chips and sauce and they were freshly made. It's small restaurant that's two story so it won't take more than 30 people. Overall, prices are reasonable and good service

Tirsia H.

Yelp
When I walked in and walked up to order the old lady at the register taking my order was not welcoming at all , she had an attitude for sure. She did not say "welcome in, how are you ? What would you like to order ?" She just looked at me with a straight rude face. So I said , "hi, how are you?" To her first . If you're going to work at a restaurant learn how to greet and welcome people in. Don't just look all miserable like you hate your job. The food was alright but I definitely won't be going there again due to the service.

Yelp
Haven't been at this restaurant in years... the vibes inside this restaurant is superrrer nice! It's literally giving mexico vibes. It's my first time trying their menudo, and I didn't really find it that special. I didn't like their torta as much either... I was hoping it was a bit more flavorful, but it was a little bland for me. I did enjoy their plates with rice, meat, beans, etc. We came on a Sunday & it wasn't as packed, but I still enjoyed the food & the ambiance. I'd for sure come back for their plates next time!

Yelp
Horrible service. Period. Full stop. Came in to get birria tacos and I politely asked if they had them. The woman at the counter proceeded to yell at me saying I didn't know how to read the menu. There's no sign saying anything, but I told her I heard from coworkers that they had it. She said it's only on the weekend and proceeded to stack some containers. I asked her if I could get Carne asada enchiladas to go ansshe said no. She said she was busy. It was 2pm on a weekday. Wow, rude. So I left.
google avatar

Junior T.

Yelp
Got a crane asada burrito. One of the best burritos I've had in the Bay Area. Was very juicy, rice fluffy and right amount of everything. I will be getting one every time I go into the Bay Area. I tried the Al pastor but I will need to get it again to review that one. I had to put it in the fridge and didn't get to taste it fresh at the time. Service was great, cashier was patient with me when I had questions. It was quiet because I was there at 11. Am on a weekday
google avatar

Steve L.

Yelp
This is kind of 'hole in the wall' since the interior has been the same for 20+ years but boy is the good good. My favorites include the carnitas plate, green chicken plate, anyhow the burritos and on weekends the menudo. All authentic and in particular how they fry the carnitas is better than most places. I come here for the food and not the ambiance. Normally I take out. Salsas are fresh and the food is hearty and tasty. They could improve in the cleanliness of the tables and seats. Upstairs is the same - could be cleaner.
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
If you're looking for ONLY Al pastor tacos, this place is a go to. The flavor is bursting and the portions are relatively decent. If you're looking for a birria burrito, look for another place. Husband didn't enjoy it and salad the burrito was bland. He kept trying to add salsa from our chips to it make the burrito appealing. Also unlike most of the taqueria we frequent, there is no salsa bar, no limes or radish to serve yourself. If you want chips, you need to pay 0.75. There's decent amount of seating though so you can definitely eat in.

Yelp
I have eaten here for the last 15 years and never wrote a review. Shame on me. This lovely family owned Taqueria is one of my Mexican cuisine favs! Homemade at its best! The crispy tacos are off the charts fantastic! You can choose from any of their delicious meats for the taco. I love the grilled chicken. Taco also includes Mexican cheese, little minced white onion and cilantro all crispy grilled to perfection. Some cheese oozes out during grilling and gets crunchy, flipping love that, drives me wild! The all star fav...the carnitas plate. The best carnitas around! Loaded with juicy crispy pork goodness with fluffy Mexican rice and refried beans, little guacamole and sour cream. The best ever, hands down. Wait that's not all. Loads of warmed corn tortillas like little cozy blankets to wrap up the crispy porky deliciousness. They are super generous with their portions and very reasonably priced. The 2 story restaurant converted from a decades, quite possibly centuries old house, is adorned with beautiful murals depicting Mexican culture; very colorful. I love eating upstairs. Very unique, cool establishment. Stop by for some awesome Mexican food in downtown SSF, just a block south off Linden & Baden from the main street, Grand Ave. There is street parking and a small metered public parking lot a few buildings north on Baden. Love this restaurant, give them a try! You will be hooked. Nice staff, awesome cuisine, good prices!

Yelp
I've been here multiple times and they never disappointed me. The food is delicious and they're not stingy with the amount they serve. 5 out of 5 stars!

Yelp
Was given rice that was bad! It smelled like mold. My dad called to let them know so they wouldn't give it to other customers & the woman on the phone told him to bring it back so he did & brought his receipt, the woman working around 7pm one feb 7,2025 was disrespectful and accused my dad for never coming. He showed her the receipt to prove it. To give a customer attitude when you're giving old/bad food to customers is not cool.
google avatar

Yelp
Aromatic, Delicious, Flavorful, mouth-watering best Mexican food in town! Customer service and friendly staff are always welcome.

Yelp
It's been a couple years since I last visited La Morena and after striking out going to my original place, I ended up here for old time sake. As with my last review, I went with my original order of a carne asada super burrito and a bottled coke. ($15) The rice was fresh, loaded up with quac, beans, and a decent amount of carne. The meat itself was not as flavorful as I remember, but it was still a tasty burrito. It's one of those burritos that it's reliable, filling, just not my first choice. The tortilla had some nice grill marks on it, I wish they would've kept it on there longer. They don't have any of their updated pricing on their menu at the store, so be sure to ask if you have pricing questions. The best thing here still has to be their fresh pico de Gallo. It's unmatched and honestly I would come back just for this if I was making tacos at home. Parking is easier compared to Grand Ave. there's a lot across the street but only one row is metered, and one is permit only. Plus street parking. If you come during peak lunch hours, it's best to call it in you are on a time crunch.

Yelp
Food: 4 out of 5 I ordered 3 tacos with everything on it: chili Colorado (pork in 'spicy' red sauce), carne asada, and the Al pastor. My favorite had to be the Al Pastor -- marinated and grilled perfectly with crispy bits! Personally I wouldn't order the chili Colorado again, wasn't spicy enough for my taste though the pork was tender. Carne asada was my second favorite, seasoned great. As of 8/2022 no open salsa bar; chili verde and a red sauce was brought out to me. Both sauces were par. I mixed them together for more flavor. Service: 5 out 5 Restaurant brings out your food to you and clears your platters. Nice folks serving so don't forget to tip! Environment: 4 out of 5 Plenty of seating for a "hole in the wall" as some other reviewers would call it. My opinion, a reliable neighborhood Mexican restaurant to bring your friends and family. I enjoy the seating because it feels so communal. Menu prices have not been updated on their board so ask before hand. $10 minimum for utilizing debit/credit. Parking on this street was so much easier than trying to find anything on Grand Ave! Overall: 4.25 out 5 Great price for 3 tacos ($11.54 including taxes), reliable flavors, and easy parking!

Yelp
Ayer domingo fuimos a desayunar a La Morena.

Yelp
Came here to get a craving fix for some nachos - their nacho order here is humongous and is easily enough for two people to share. The first thing I noticed was the lack of parking in the vicinity - I circled around the block a couple of times and couldn't find any street parking so decided to just take a chance and park in one of the open spots in the gas station next door and hope that I wouldn't get towed. As we had already ordered ahead, I was simply here to pick up. Even though I was the only one in line and my food was pretty much already to go, the person putting all my items in a bag together was moving at a glacial pace in actually packaging things together. I finally got my items and was on my way. When we had placed the order, we had asked for the chips to be on the side as we didn't want them to be super soggy when we got the food home. Lo and behold, the chips, beans, and cheese were all combined together in the take out container with the other ingredients (sour cream, salsa, etc) in their own separate containers. So of course the chips ended up being super soggy, which is exactly what we didn't want. Overall, the food still tasted good but definitely not the texture that we wanted.

Yelp
Great food, good prices, ambiance is OK. The carnitas is to die for! I ordered three street tacos with everything and I was stuff.
google avatar

Jen W.

Yelp
If you leave the airport hungry or just in the San Fran area, this little Taqueria is a hidden gem. Hands down the best tacos we have ever had in our 50+ years! We got chicken tacos and beef. I believe they slow roast their meats then grill them up to order. Nice and crispy edges. Salsa Verde so good you can drink it! We just happened upon it and got lucky! Ate too fast for a photo! Oh, and try their homemade pineapple juice drink!
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Great food for a great price. However, like others have said, the staff are less than friendly and there is no parking. The lady there seemed annoyed we were even there. I cracked a joke about ordering a full nacho and a smile from her, but she didn't see the humor in it at all. I would eat here again and again for the good food, but would likely do phone orders for take out going forward.
google avatar

Rich H.

Yelp
Tried their breakfast burrito for the first. Chorizo, black beans, potato, salsa, & guacamole. My goodness. Holy frijoles, it was a happy fiesta in my mouth. The best way to start a morning! Bravo!!
google avatar

john d.

Yelp
Epic carnitas here. The best you will find. Whether in a burrito or a taco, it's moist, tasty and delish
google avatar

Alden C.

Yelp
La Morena has been a staple within the community for a long time and I've been going here since I was a kid. Definitely one of my favorite Taqueria's in the area. I always get the steak quesadilla which is massive and comes with guacamole, pico de gallo, and sour cream. It is delicious and the quality has always been consistent. I also love their horchatas. The atmosphere of the restaurant is also pretty cozy overall as well.
google avatar

Johnny N.

Yelp
My pasty complexion may lead you to believe i know nothing about Mexican food, but my heritage and addiction to Mexican food tells a different story. San Francisco is blessed with quality burritos, and La Morena is one of my favorites. Not getting Al Pastor is a bigger mistake than DC hiring Ezra Miller to play The Flash. Thank me later.

diewney n.

Yelp
Been coming here for about 20 years and they've even catered my kids parties. I come here for the carnitas plate but I'm sure everything else is as good. Nice and crispy with good fat and salt. Love the 8 tortillas they grill for you on the side.

Tess B.

Yelp
I usually go to another local taqueria but there was no parking there so I decided to come to La Morena instead. The food is very good but the lady at the counter has a bad attitude. Enough for me not to come back.
google avatar

Alyssa S.

Yelp
The food made my family very sick. Sucks because I used to love eating here before. Looks like there were a bunch of health violations on inspection.
google avatar

Jeff G.

Yelp
I've reviewed them before but I just had to jot down another for my favorite childhood taqueria. Had the pastor plate and it was good, filling and brought me back 30 years. When I need that blast from the past I come here and it never disappoints. Thank you for still pumping out good Mexican food.
google avatar

Mr G.

Yelp
One more local Tacqueria off the list and one to go (Guadalajara in the excelsior) in my fall 2021 burrito samplings. La Morena makes a tasty burrito! We ordered regular chicken burritos with black beans and they did not disappoint. The chips were thick and not overly salted. As others have mentioned the lady at the counter interacts with indifference at best, but it is only an $8 dollar burrito so...we'll return sometime to try the enchilada plates.
google avatar

Yelp
Solid food, but still on the search for a go-to spot. I was craving Mexican food and there's a few options with high reviews in downtown SSF. We came on a Friday night around 7pm and there weren't too many people inside the restaurant. They have seating upstairs and downstairs. Firstly, the service was really slow. We waited for at least 15 minutes for the one woman at the counter to answer the phone and put together other orders before she even got to the first person in line. She was friendly when we ordered but it did feel like we were being ignored for a while. We got the tacos, a quesadilla Suiza, and a tostada de ceviche. They ran out of carnitas! So I had to get a chicken taco and it did come with a LOT of beans and not as much meat. They also missed my extra side of rice and we had to ask for it. However, everything we had was flavorful. The chicken wasn't dry and the ceviche was light and fresh. We had a good amount of sides (guac, sour cream, etc.) We did get free chips and there's a salsa bar with two salsa options. The green one is spicier. The food was decent here, but the service has me longing for more and with all the options in the area, I'm still on the search for my go-to spot.
google avatar

Jose O.

Yelp
Nothing like having to remake your tacos at home. All I wanted was standard tacos; meat, tortilla, hot sauce onions and cilantro. Instead I got whole means and pico de Gallo. So instead of getting home and enjoying my dinner I had to pick off all the beans and add my own cilantro, onion and hot sauce. I'm done with this place.

Maura G.

Yelp
Let me say that my food was not very good, but the burrito and the torta my husband and son had were pretty good. We also tried some ceviche which was ok. I had the carne asada plate. The meat itself was ok. The rice was ok. The salsa was not fresh. The guacamole was atrocious. The menu I saw on line touted they used whole beans unless you asked for refried, so I didn't ask. I should have. I got some awful refried beans. But it wasn't expensive. I might do take out for a different meal. The other thing. I didn't get the idea they cared about our business. Maybe they were just tired.
google avatar

Maynard M.

Yelp
Hard to go wrong at this awesome taqueria! Went here a few times and the most recent with 5 other coworkers. I wanted a burrito and changed my mind to get the Al pastor plate which came with the same ingredients as the burrito but on a plate. The entree did come with corn tortillas but wasn't as soft as I would have liked it to be. Nevertheless, my meal was delicious. The other 5 coworkers ended up getting the same Al pastor plate and the overall consensus was a knockout! Al pastor was juicy and flavorful and the refried beans were silky and one of the best I've had. I think parking is only street parking but in this area that's mostly the case. Most likely I'll be coming back 10 more times this year!
google avatar

Sylvia H.

Yelp
I was meeting up with a friend and he suggested Mexican for lunch, so I picked this place since it was in between where we live. There's mainly metered parking in the area. Since we came here on a Sunday, we didn't have to pay for parking, though finding parking close by wasn't exactly easy. I'm always craving for tamales when I want to eat Mexican food. So I decided to order the pork tamales and chips & guac. We waited for about 10 minutes before our food came to our table. My tamales order came with two pork tamales, rice, beans, salsa, and lettuce all for $9 pre-tax! I love how I got two tamales instead of one. I feel like one isn't satisfying enough. The pork tamales and the guac were good! The portion size and prices are really reasonable. This is a good cheap eats place!

S B.

Yelp
It's been a good ten years so clothing's could have changed but this is the best burrito place and I had lots of options in SF. I hope they're still as good as
google avatar

Sara S.

Yelp
Will need to check online for prices as menu board in the restaurant does not list pricing. Prices very reasonable for portion size! Wishing we would've split the carne asada plate instead of ordering the way we did. Nothing ~special~ about staff or atmosphere, but great place for Mexican food! Reasonable prices, great flavors, quick service!! Will be back!

Molly M.

Yelp
Ordered enchiladas via doordash. Says right here vegetarian, nothing about any sort of meat. I got them and they were stuffed full of chicken. ): Please fix your menu as it's misleading and unfair to vegetarians to order food when you're hungry, pay for it, wait for it, and then to receive something you cannot even eat. Thanks for nothing guys. Will not be returning or ordering again.
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
Birria Tacos!!! Enough said! All this hype about birria tacos and it's blowing up all over the place in places like San Jose and SF. But honestly, the best ones we've had so far are from here! The only downside is that they only have birria tacos on the weekends. But they make crispy tacos , and their al pastor crispy taco is pretty damn good rival! I've been a customer of la Morena for over 10 years but never felt compelled to write a review until I had their birria taco. It's THAT good!
google avatar

Zach H.

Yelp
Apparently I love Mexican food. This place reminds me of where I grew up in the sac valley. Delicious quality ingredients, nice people. No frills. Burritos are great. Al pastor , carnitas and grilled chicken. The highlight is their crispy tacos. So good. Any meat. Rich and delicious.
google avatar

Ashton R.

Yelp
Amazing food all the way! I will definitely be coming back! Order yourself a taco from here I promise they don't skim out on meat. Come here hungry.
google avatar

Mariko D.

Yelp
Hands down my favorite taqueria in the area. The green sauce makes it even better! My go to is the "crispy tacos" which is Birria tacos. Must try!!! Lately though I've been ordering the pollo asado plate. Amazing. We've been ordering like once a week from this place. I think the green sauce just makes it all taste better. Although I love this place, I had to give 3 stars. Because they always forget something when we order. And that's not ok especially when your hungry.
google avatar

Clarence A.

Yelp
Been here more then few times, if La Tapatia closed I head over here for a burrito or rice plate. Their portions are fairly large the food is always good, eating in or taking to go is never a hassle. I've tried these meats asada, carnitas, al pastor, camaron, chicken red and green just to name a few of the options that I have sampled, all of them good. If we have time we eat upstairs, salsa bar upstairs self serve. carne asada plate is my regular, if on the go it is the super burrito with two meats carne asada and al pastor or carne asada and carnitas Their shrimp cocktail is delicious, chile relleno plate is also good the pepper is stuffed with cheese not meat just order a small side of meat to remedy this hahha. Again, I have had several of there offerings and still one of my go to's if others in the area are closed. food **** everything I have tried has been good price $ service **** helpful staff ambiance **** painted murals on the walls, hard wood tables designed with etching with large see thru glass placed on top, smaller tables just hardwood finish
google avatar

Claire J.

Yelp
I ordered online and did a pickup. It was easy and convenient. I was craving for enchiladas after reading about with the book I was reading at that time. I can't remember which sauce I had but it wasn't spicy. I wish I got the spicy one. I'm no expert but this almost hit the spot. My husband got the burrito. It was big and tasty. Not the favorite. But this spot is good in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is still pretty good. The service is horrible and the prices have over double (compared to the marked prices on the menu). There historically gave customers complementary chips... no more. Once again, another outrageous example of the hyper inflation.
