My friends and I decided to check this place out after shuffling a few pieces of furniture across town. One of my friends suggested it, he said he used to eat here all the time when he was back in school. The rest of us took his word and off we went.
Yes, this place is decidedly Southside, although after walking in, it could have been south of the border for all practical purposes. Mexican music on the juke box, a predominantly Hispanic clientele, and not a word of English spoken. The tables looked dingy, better than Chinatown, but not as good as some Northside Mexican restaurants, and had trays full of hot peppers that you could feel their burn just by sitting down. There was a fair amount of business in the take out area and you could feel the heat from the kitchen nearer the front. But the smell of the cooking food, oh, it was flavorful.
We ordered tortas, tacos, and burritos. I had a beef steak torta and because there was the wonderful smell of chorizo in the air, one chorizo (chorizo=Mexican sausage, often spicy) taco. At first I thought I would want more than one, but after my torta came, I was glad I only ordered one.And here's my reason for only ordering one. I've been to several Mexican places where the the chorizo smells very good and flavorful, but tastes bland and stale when eaten. So when my one taco arrived I looked at it with a healthy amount of skepticism. It smelled good, the cooked chorizo steaming out of the corn tortilla that surrounded it. The tace was on the smaller side, some people may think it's a rip-off, but at least it was stuffed to the brim. Well it turns out I was pleasantly surprised- the chorizo not only smelled good, it tasted good as well. And it was spicy and slightly greasy, just the way I like it. Based on the qualification alone, I knew we had come to the right place, and was thinking about ordering more tacos.
Then came my torta. Whatever appetite I had would definitely be satisfied by it. That sucker was huge. The steak flavor was good, though I've tasted better, and everything else tasted, the way it should. And in the back of my mind I was thinking that I should have ordered one with chorizo on it. The thought of even trying the other tacos and burritos we ordered was out the window as well. For a moment I was in cloud nine.
Anyhow, should you go, try your Spanish out. One of my friends was trying his out to the waitress and she was loving it. The other two of us were amused. Yes, this is out of the way just to get Mexican food, but by the amount of people eating, or waiting for their take-outs, the place is doing something right.
Pros: Food tastes as good as it smells, reasonable prices, big parking lot.
Cons: Bring your Spanish, even broken Spanish will give you some respect here, dingy ambience may be too much for some.
To sum it up: The world definitely revolves around a tortilla.
