Where to Eat and Drink in Columbia Heights and Mt. Pleasant | Eater DC

"Though the taco joint has been through a few name changes, most recently Lezo’s, one thing hasn’t changed. Doña Rosa, who ran a clandestine “apartment taqueria”, is still making the tacos, tortas, tamales, and rich stews served at this neighborhood standby." - Jamie Liu

First time visiting. Very good service. Everyone was very friendly. The food was okay, I tried four different types of tacos. They all had good portions and full of meat but the steak needs more seasoning. They also need salsa or taco sauce as I was not a fan of the sauce that was given. One of them was very bland the other was just spicy but neither was flavorful. I tried the mangomargarita It was delicious but it was a bit over priced once I got the bill. They don't have any specials or happy hour which was strange for a bar and they don't have prices posted so really could have been charged anything. I would visit again.

We were pleasantly surprised with these delicious takeout tacos! So tasty with fresh ingredients and large portions. The service was friendly and fast as well. Bathrooms were super clean.

Dishes looked accurate to the websites photos. We’ve eaten here twice in the last four days, fantastic both times. Both times we ordered the enchiladas verdes and fajitas texana mixta. (With 3 extra tortillas) They absolutely load you up with protein in these dishes, the tortillas appear homemade, chips are made in house and paired with a thin salsa, the pinto beans and yellow rice are delicious. The consistent quality of each component sets them above any place I have yet to try in the area. Will definitely be returning to try more dishes.

I go here all the time and never had horrible service like this is 2pm and they saying there online system is down but they are just realizing it but it’s still accepting orders. They same system that is down took my order and charged my card and when I got there I was told I have no order and will have to pay and order again even after I proved that I paid. Then when I asked for my money back or a manger they told me no and to come back next week or next Monday

Google
I was pleasantly surprised! The food was excellent, the atmosphere was great, and the cleanliness exceeded my expectations. Compared to other Mexican restaurants I’ve visited, this place is definitely a 10 out of 10!

Google
The food great ,large portions all fresh, family friendly in one side the other a bar with loud music, we had the fry fish and torta the carnitas pork, the kitchen and bathroom clean all the area was clean. It’s a super busy place that is why food is fresh, and really no time to greet or seat guests , so please go straight to order your food and drink and wait patiently till they get a minute to get your order after that all good don’t expect anyone to ask how was the food ,food is great, after you finished eating please pick up your plate and put it away. No fancy here just good food for hungry people. Oh i almost forgot they make Fresh corn tortillas and your utensils are on top your food inside a white bag, 🧐. TMI

The food is always good but I called today and was left on hold for 5 minutes and walked into the store and 3 people were at the register doing absolutely nothing and immediately asked what I wanted. I asked who answers the phone and left me on hold with my phone still on the call! Fernando says oh I'm sorry I forgot and smirks like something is funny. I come here all the time and this made me not want to come back! I'll be finding a new spot ASAP!

Google
The margarita, guacamole, salsa, plantains, steak, shrimp and chicken fajita was the best I ever had!!!!!

Yelp
Hands down the best Hispanic food I've had in Maryland. Service was excellent and they have a bar in the back if you wanna grab a drink. It's a very casual place with seating at your own discretion. The prices are reasonable, and they pack your food to the max with meat and you feel like you are getting your moneys worth. All my food was delicious, I got Two tacos de lengua( cow tongue), Two tacos de Carnitas and a Gordita de Carne asada. Portions are great and came with extra veggies and salsa. They have a wide selection of Mexican glass sodas and desserts. Will definitely be coming back again.

Yelp
Their churros are huge and filled! No chocolate required lol! Ordered for pickup for cinco de mayo and was impressed. They're massive as churros used to be and it only took 3 to feed 7 people who eat a lot. Even my kids ate only 1/3-1/2 at a time! They are good and reheat well in the air fryer. 8/10 would recommend!

Yelp
This place has been here forever and I went in here randomly one day with my parents and now whenever I'm nearby and hungry I have to stop here! The food is so good and authentic I love it. It's a a really cute spot and seems to be a favorite in the community as it's always a line. They have a large menu and plenty of desserts. Definitely recommend

Yelp
A good friend of mine highly recommended this restaurant. If you're in the Waldorf area and craving authentic tacos, I highly recommend Taqueria Los Compadres. They offer a variety of Mexican dishes, including tacos, quesadillas, burritos, sopes, huarache, tortas, and more. The restaurant has a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for a casual night out with friends or family. The bar is right next door. The lighting is dim and cozy, and the decor is tasteful and modern. The music is upbeat and adds to the overall vibe of the place. Now, let's talk about the tacos. The pork tacos are a must-try. They are flavorful and juicy, and the toppings are fresh and delicious. The shrimp tacos are also a great option, with tender and well-seasoned meat. The restaurant offers a variety of salsas and toppings to customize your tacos to your liking. Finally, the customer service is top-notch. The staff is friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. They make sure that you have everything you need and that your experience is enjoyable from start to finish. Overall, Taqueria Los Compadres is a great choice for anyone looking for authentic Mexican food in the Waldorf area. I hope you enjoy your meal! #EatGoodAndBeHappy #AreYouGonnaEatThat

Yelp
Margaritas were perfect not over killed with tequila or mix or lime, it was perfectly balanced. The tortilla shell was super crispy, the chorizo was very flavorful, lettuce was fresh, the cream, avocado, and crumbled Oaxaca cheese added the perfect balance of creaminess and salty. Papusa needed a bit of flavors but the coleslaw was very tasty and refreshing. The beef soup didn't have intend beef flavor and the beef was a bit tough. Service was very friendly and fast. Ambiance was lively busting with a lot of carry out orders, quick eat, the diners , and the bar. I will definitely go back for sopes, tacos, and margaritas.

Yelp
Love the tacos but skip the soup. Come here for the fresh food and authentic flavors.

Yelp
What an adventure just to be over all disappointed! We ordered two while tilapia platters on March 6. When we got home we realized they were beyond over cooked. They were so dry, hard, no flavor. They were so over cooked we couldn't pick any meat off the fish. That night I ended up eating some left over from home with the sides we got at this restaurant. When I called to complain they were closed. The following day March 7. I called asked to speak to a manager and was hung up on. I called back spoke to three different people, one who said there was no manager. I let them know my issue and I let them know I would like the food remade. They tried to brush me off and told me I could it get a refund I should have came back yesterday. I let them know I had called but they were closed I also let them know I sent a message on their contact us portal in their website. They continued say they couldn't do anything. I let the young guy on the phone know this was not how they should treat their customers and that I saved the fish to show them. He said bring the fish so they could see. I did just that. They took the bag looked through the boxes which we had only touched a tiny piece on one of the fish. They took the food to the back and he returned saying they will make it over this one time but in the future I need to tell them I don't want it over cooked. I laughed in disbelief and he laughed and said they cook it well done here. Needless to say I will not be back! The fish we received on the second night was not over cooked but most definitely cooked in old grease! The smell of it was unappetizing and my husband and I no longer had a taste for whole tilapia. What a waste of money! $50 down the drain during inflation! The rice and beans were good. The salad was old and soggy both days! If you are in the Waldorf area and looking for good whole fish I suggest Coastal Azul, just one light down!!

Yelp
Terrible. Disappointed. Hot. All the words to describe our experience. I met up with a friend for food and beverage. We both love Latin food, so we wanted to give this place a try. The smell hits you as soon as you open the door, so that's usually a good sign. A guy yelled "this is the best food ever!" as I was walking up. (He's a liar, lol) We opted to dine at the bar and were quickly assisted with our order. The waitress seemed kind while she took our order and then her mood changed when we later ordered chips and salsa. Hell, the chips and salsa were just ok, yet the best part of the order. It was so HOT in there, as if the heater was on full blast. The music was playing which I was cool with, but as soon as we started talking the music got louder and louder and LOUDER to the point where we had to scream to have a conversation. Eventually we gave up and asked for the check. As we were leaving we noticed that the music was turned down to a more reasonable volume, so that was rude. Never again. Oh, here's what we had: *CHIPS & SALSA *CHICKEN TACO *STEAK TACO (not pictured) *CHICKEN SOPES *STRAWBERRY-MANGO MARGARITA __ I eat. @f.hux I thrift. @DCthriftish

Yelp
5/5 stars. This is a hidden gem in Charles county and not many may pay attention. But I am here to tell you. RUN DONT WALK !!!! This is some of the most authentic Mexican cuisine you can get in the dmv. As soon as you walk in you are greeted and asked for your order. We decided to sit in the restaurant . Note they also have a bar connected next door as well as a grocery store. The food will transport you to another country. The Al pastor taco was my ultimate favorite. You tasted hints of smoke and the fresh pork flavor. The fried tilapia was a fan fav as well. What real foodie doesn't love a whole piece of fried fish and yellow rice on the side? The different hot sauces, drinks, and toppings also made me fall in love. I told myself I'm going to go back one day for happy hour.

Yelp
This was my first time coming here. I had passed and decided to try it out. The menudo had a lot of large bones to reduce the amount of meat they put in it. The taste was ok, but they used too much sauce and made it heavy. I also ordered a horchata and it was chalky and too sweet to the point I took it back. Instead of giving me another or a discount on another drink. They charged me for a new one. The place was clean and had music. Would not suggest coming to eat here. Keep going down the street, there are other resturants down the road

S P.

Yelp
The food is always delicious, the service always fast and friendly. Also, the restaurant is always clean and the ingredients are fresh.
google avatar

Jenny T.

Yelp
Solid, authentic, no frills spot with quick service. The fajita seems pricy but it's very large portion. I usually get the shrimp and chicken. The horchata is really good too.

Yelp
No more long journeys for wifey and I when we want the ambiance, music and authentic Taqueria food! This place is nothing but outstanding and the service is excellent as well. How can you go wrong with a market, restaurant and bar in one location, however separated by walls. This trip we opted for the tacos and ordered 7 out of the 11 which is basically all of them. My favorite was the Lengua, however the Shrimp and Fish was absolutely delicious! Wifey's favorite was the Al Pastor with Barbacoa de res a close second! Needless to say, this place will surely be a regular when we get the urge for this cuisine. Highly recommended without a doubt! Damn day 2 and they reheat well so major PLUS!!!

Yelp
You should definitely eat here! The taqueria may look a little sun bleached on the outside, but inside is bright, clean, spacious, and smells like a mixture of Fabuloso and scents from the grill. Very pleasant. Most of the people inside (cooking and eating) are brown, which is always a good sign at a taqueria. It's cafeteria style, so you order at the counter when you walk in, take a number, and find a table. Speaking Spanish is a plus, but some of the staff is bilingual. I've been able to put away my Spanglish and be confident I'll end up with the food I want. If you're not comfortable pronouncing the names of the food, the menu has pictures of each dish, with handy numbers next to them. The service is friendly, even if it's obvious everyone is busy with the job they have to do. The food is as tasty as it looks, and is always fresh. Be prepared to wait a fresh food amount of time, for sure. Your meal will come out as it's ready, not all at once. The chairs are sturdy and without arms. There is room to maneuver a wheelchair between tables. If you are sensitive to light or sound, bring some shades and earbuds. This is a spot we come back to over and over! I hope you do too!

Yelp
Delicious food, well served, staff is always friendly, and the place is kept super clean.

Yelp
Micheladas are great and will definitely fill you up. My go to is always the Carne asada burrito or tacos. For the vegetarians, my partner gets a veggie burrito that she absolutely loves.

Yelp
This is one of my absolute favorite restaurants in Waldorf Maryland. It has so much Latin culture so much good food affordable prices good ambience nice people working there. Your food is made hot and fresh. It's a lovely place to go with your family. It's a lovely place to pick up a meal for yourself. I love this place. It's a lovely place to go and get your tacos for taco Tuesday or Cinco de Mayo. It is a really good place to get your family a nice, hot nutrient dense meal.
google avatar

Jay M.

Yelp
I have driven past this spot for YEARS and finally decided to give it a shot for Taco Tuesday. I ordered two tacos -- one steak and one chicken, both on corn tortillas. Both were good and reasonably priced (less than $3.75 ea.). The staff was friendly and the restaurant was clean. IM) this is one of the best options for authentic Mexican food in Waldorf, La Plata and White Plains.
google avatar

Blanca B.

Yelp
Tacos are greasy, food took an hour to be served, the horchata tasted old and the Jamaica was way too sweet.

Tavo T.

Yelp
I used to eat in this place a lot the prize and the food was fine .today i buy 2 chicken soups small and is ridiculous small portion of sup the cup the using is from the side order and the big sup is now the regular cup the any other restaurants they provide to you and not charge extra please owner stop doit it! i feel you rob me . Yelp
Great tacos Authentic cuisine Service friendly and fast Restaurant feels right at South America, really nice tbh.

Yelp
We were really hungry & wanted a quick bite to eat. Found this hole in the wall next to a little Mexican store. This place is a locals only kind of joint with families out for a Sunday meal. Fast and inexpensive, my carnitas tacos were packed with meat, cilantro & onions. Came with some lunch mes, cucumber, roasted onion, and radishes. Food could have used a touch of salt but that's a personal issue. Please don't ruin it by going in there and asking for a bunch of vegan options. Stop by next door and get some pan dulce for the road.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
I had the Baleadas. Super soft tortillas and reminded me of a breakfast burrito but in two taco form.

Yelp
We love coming here! Normally we just order the tacos and pupusas but today we tried some other stuff. Not disappointed!! Food was great. Restaurant was clean. Service was friendly. Update: I accidentally left my purse at our table when we came in. I noticed it about 15 minutes later and called them right away. Y'all- They had noticed it and set it aside for me! Such an honest team. I can't thank them enough for the amazing food, great service, and phenomenal honesty. We'll definitely be back and will support this business over and over again. lol

Yelp
About a 1-1.5: Taqueria Los Compadres is a restaurant/bar located off of Crain Highway, offering items such as tacos, pupusas, salads, and various specials of the day. The hubs and I came here, and we ordered: 2 carnitas tacos, 2 carne asada tacos, a cheese pupusa, a bean dip, and a cup of horchata. Honestly, the food was all pretty awful and almost inedible. The carnitas, while tender, didn't seem to have been drained appropriately, and there was just way too much liquid in the tortillas; it was also bland, and adding some squirts from their hot sauces didn't help, either. The carne asada was not good, as it had a very strong, off-putting beef flavor to them. The tortillas were also not good, as the edges were dried out and stale. The pupusa, which seemed to have been grilled nicely, had a strange chemical-like taste to it and was spit out. The bean dip, which was of a generous portion, was gloopy and thin and had no flavor; it was also not seasoned. The tortilla chips that came with the bean dip seemed to be the only edible item of the whole meal. The horchata itself was more on the sweeter end and grainy, but not a drink that I would have ordered again. The staff here speak limited English, so brush up on your Spanish! They also place priority on phone orders than on the dine-in customers, so it will take a while for them to take your order, as they have to punch everything in the system before assisting anyone else. You order up at the counter, are given a number, and the items are brought out to you, as there are plenty of tables. I'm glad I was able to check this place out, but I would not return. +dried-out tortillas T___T +off-putting flavors of meats and pupusas T___T +gloopy and unflavorful bean dips T___T +limited hot sauces available +free parking in small plaza

Yelp
I'm disappointed after I went to this place this morning. I've been going here with my family and friend for years. Today they had attitudes. I always get a burrito without rice and add eggs. They've been doing it for years. Today was a fuss. They can't make it with eggs now. I tell them ok, but I don't want it with rice, so just do it with beans. They (the cook & cashier) refuse to make it and try to force me to order it with rice. They claim that the burrito doesn't close. You mean to tell me it closed just fine for 5 years, but now it doesn't close? Don't know what part of I don't like rice they didn't understand. Also where in the menu does it say that the burrito come with rice? False advertisement much? You can't force customers to eat things they don't like. Then she had the nerve to tell me to order a quesadilla. You lost several customers. We're never coming back. And the chicken soup is disgusting. They can't make a soup to save their lives. I only ate the pupusas and burritos. You're better off going to El Rinconcito Salvadoreño, Veracruz bakery or Silver Diner.

Jay S.

Yelp
Carne asado taco... also tried the Lengua and pastor. Carne asada taco was the best one. Lengua has no flavor nor does the chorizo one. Don't think I would recommend to anyone. First time trying it since I seen good reviews but definitely not what I was expecting
google avatar

Dan J.

Yelp
Carne asada taco - bland; tortillas - not good; the al pastor - NO flavor; chips had no salt; refried black beans - again, almost no flavor. Highly disappointing, but not awful. I would have given them 2 or 3 stars, but they omitted an item from my order and didn't handle that well. When I called they blamed me for not grabbing it out of the refrigerator (they didn't bother to tell me that I needed to do that). They said I could come pick it up, but the place is 25 minutes away. I didn't want ANOTHER 50 minute drive for what was likely a disappointing tres leches (based on the other food). But they wouldn't refund that item. I didn't want refunded for the less than great food--just the missing cake. No, they wouldn't/couldn't do that. No offer to make it right. Definitely not going back. Find some place else for tacos.
google avatar

Britney G.

Yelp
Hidden Gem!! I've passed this place for years and finally decided to try it from seeing people post their food. If you like authentic tacos you won't be disappointed. I also had their pupusas and they were great as well. I definitely recommend!!
google avatar

Charli B.

Yelp
Worst taquitos I've ever had in life! Hard, cold, under-seasoned chicken from last week... I should have just went to 7Eleven! And THEN they wanted $3.16 PER scoop of ice cream...whet?!? Never coming back! Hours later....I definitely have a case of food poisoning from those old taquitos earlier. Been up all night throwing up & on the toilet!!! Horrible!!

Yelp
So we are at Taqueria Los compadres in Waldorf. I'm treating my family to dinner, we order Huaraches without beans. My daughter wanted to try the beans so she asked to put the beans on the side. When we saw the receipt, Kim the cashier charged me $4.50 for beans. Mind you, beans come on the Huarache but we didn't want them on ours. I asked why was she charging us for the beans and Kim's response was I'm pretty sure it's a charge for the beans anyway, If there is then why charge me if the meal comes with beans. Kim I didn't like your uncaring customer service if that's your name. And , I hope the food is good because if it isn't you have lost a great tipper. I should have spoken to the manager. Deuce here! After eating you get. 3 ***

Yelp
Amazing service amazing food. I think I have taco in my hair I ate so good! 1000% would recommend

Yelp
3.5 I've been here about 3 times now. First two times were great, this last time..not so great. Chicken flautas and shrimp tacos are our go to's. They offer a grand variety. My Spanish fails me to order more than my go to's. I usually get 1 pupusa. This last visit I almost barfed. My sister didn't agree that the pupusa was bad, but my son upon opening the box remarked how funky the pupusas were and would not eat them. They were trashed. The sopa de camarrones (a daily special) was the experimental dish and boy did I get surprise. Whole shrimps with heads and tails in a tomato based soup. It came with rice, tortillas and some garnishment of cilantro and lime. I wasn't too interested after peeling and deveining the shrimp. The taste of the soup in general wasn't too appealing to me. I like them for my go to favorites and they sell desserts and horchata. Pretty authentic stuff.
google avatar

Andrew R.

Yelp
Friendly service, clean place. Orders served fast. I like tacos a lot, here tacos are not bad at all, ingredients were fresh, just some lack of flavor. I was visiting this place with my friends and we ordered few different tacos, some tacos were great, but some little bit lack of seasoning. I'm personally not a fan of salty food and their tortillas on point, but seasoning overall is not great. But will recommend this place, tacos made good, with fresh ingredients and portions not small, price is fair.
google avatar

Andrew N.

Yelp
One of the few local Mexican restaurants in Waldorf that my family and I really enjoy. We usually stick to the tacos (all varieties), chicken flautas, and horchata as our go-to meal. We usually don't dine in, but the staff is very friendly. When it comes to the restaurant, there is nothing to rave about: pretty much a whole-in-the-hole restaurant, but that's the least of my worries. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for authentic Mexican food in Waldorf.
google avatar

Aggie S.

Yelp
This place has the best tacos and Mexican food I have ever had in my life. I am kinda sad I'm moving away from southern Maryland and will miss this place. The tacos are amazing and authentic. I always get the carnitas and chicken tacos but the beef and beef tongue are also soooo good. I love their flan as well, so delicious! Not to sweet and very creamy and flavorful. I also like ordering the daily specials especially if it's the barbacoa de res! The dessert is great! Churros are amazing and the fajitas are so good! The tortilla are homemade and their little side sauces are also authentic. I hope to find a new go to Mexican place when I move to Arlington!
google avatar

Jai L.

Yelp
Love it! Go to the Little market next-door while you wait for your food (if you didn't call in advance) to find other treats and meats ( highly recommend). I also like the bar in the restaurant. The sweet lady that works behind there makes one mean a$$ Margarita!
google avatar

Desmond B.

Yelp
The best spot to have amazing margaritas and equally great food. My wife and wanted to go somewhere to blow off some work steam and engulf in a different culture. If you are here try the street tacos they will be all you need.
google avatar

Micah C.

Yelp
Wasn't expecting to find good Mexican food in Waldorf, but this spot might just be the place to go. Try the papusas -- they're great! I also had a chorizo taco and carnitas taco. The chorizo was a little salty but the carnitas was delicious. It's also very affordable. Will definitely come back to try out other dishes and get dessert next time.

Yelp
This place has been in Waldorf for as long as I can remember but we have never tried it until now. I have noticed it when driving past for years but just didn't give it much thought. The other night my husband was craving some Mexican food and so I looked on Yelp to see what our local choices were. Of course, we have been to Mexico and La Tolteca many times so we decided to give this place a try. We were not disappointed! We both got tacos and they were delicious!! They were extremely fresh and certainly authentic. They were served with a fresh lime slice, grilled green onion, a slice of radish and cucumber. My husband got all three Carne Asada tacos. I tried one steak and one Carnitas. The meat was cooked perfectly in each one and they were topped with fresh cilantro and diced onions. I loved having the fresh squeezed lime on top of both. We also ordered chips and guacamole. It came about 5 min or more after they served our tacos...I wished it had come before our tacos like an appetizer. Either way...the guacamole was fresh and delicious and the chips were warm and crispy. We just chose bottled waters to drink although they had a lot of bottled soda and Mexican soda options available. They also had a freezer full of popsicles that looked good although we did not try any. The inside of the restaurant was not much to look at. It was bright and did not have a cozy, date night feel but the food made up for the lack of decor. They did have a second side of the restaurant that had a bar in it with a few high top tables and that had darker lighting. We will definitely be back!

Ashleigh L.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place but my food was cold and my burrito just didn't taste that great. I feel like I was given food that was just reheated to be honest. However, my plantains was nice and hot, very fresh. Now that I enjoyed, I'm giving three stars for the great custom service I revived when I entered the establishment and the lady at the register was helpful. I'm still new to the area so I'm sure I'll get this place another try and possibly update my review.

Russell L.

Yelp
Great place for cheap food that tastes great. Made fresh and has a nice bar set off to the side. The food is truly the best part. The place is clean and the folks are very friendly. Excellent bargain
google avatar

Rey G.

Yelp
This place is the bomb.com, no seriously, been here a bunch of times and purposely try different things. Everything thus far from the tacos, to the STEAK BURRITO and the pupusas as de-li-cious! Been to many similar restaurants in the area but this has to be #1. The staff are nice, the prices are fair, the place is clean and food is legit.

Rolando S.

Yelp
This place is worse employees actitud also my order takes 45 minutes to come over and they bring plate by plate and place was completely empty when they finish it with my order first one was completely cold

Me and my husband used to come here for tacos and margaritas before COVID. I haven't been during COVID, but the food is really good. Authentic street tacos and really great margaritas. We have also had the guacamole which is really good as well. (My baby daughter also loved it)

Yelp
Had to find good Mexican restaurants in Maryland for some reason. This was one of the best ones that I found but still doesn't compare to Mexican restaurants in Nebraska! Yes, Nebraska!! But anyways, this place was clean, nice staff. I'll be back to taste other items on the menu.

Yelp
I normally go to another spot in the area that serves tacos, but I saw the good reviews for this place and decided to give them a try. I got the three chicken tacos w/ chips and guac, I also got the yellow rice. I honestly wasn't impressed. The chicken was bland and lacked flavor. I was also shocked that they charged for a side of pico and cheese. Seems like that would be included as a standard topping for the tacos and not additional. The guac was ok, but I didn't care for the tortilla chips. The yellow rice wasn't bad either. Everything I had was just ok. Not sure why they have so many rave reviews, but this was a disappointment (especially bc I was hungry). Won't be returning here.

Yelp
If you are looking for authentic and delicious hispanic food this is the spot. My favorite entrees aré pupas and carne asada.
