I cannot tell you how disappointed I was when I moved to Texas only to find that the mexican food sucks here. There is nothing here that even closely resembles authentic mexican food. And the fact that some of these places chose to call themselves "taquerias" is just ludicrous to me. They have never been in a real taqueria. It's like calling the HEB sushi kiosk an authentic Japanese sushi house, not even close. My first clue should have been when another soldier told me the mexican food near fort hood is great, it's real authentic, not like Taco Bell... Really, Taco Bell? Well I arrived here and all my fears were validated. So turns out there are several mexican food restaurants around here and I have eaten at some but not all. I have been disappointed many times already, but have yet to be surprised. The caliber of mexican food here is what some call "white" mexican food, it is designed for the Anglo palette and is usually as spicy as the taco sauce you get at a Taco Bell. This specific mexican restaurant and drive through is among one of the worst. None of their food has any semblance of authenticity, their salsa is fresh out of a can, all their food is pre-made, greasy, salty, soggy and altogether unappetizing. The drive through is the worst, it has taken me over a half hour to get my food with no one else in the drive through and taken me even longer when there are more than one car there. My order is almost always missing something or is prepared wrong and to add insult to injury, they are expensive. For the crappy low quality food they sell they charge a lot of money. I pay those prices at nice sit down restaurants, not at drive thrus. I don't think I should have to pay $3.50 for a dollar taco, a true "taqueria" you are not, my friend. After my second time getting food poisoning from that place I am finally writing them off, I will never step foot in that restaurant again.
Btw, if you do want REAL authentic taqueria tacos, and you don't mind driving 3-4 hours, go to San Antonio. The next best thing besides the Alamo for me was getting a styrofoam plate with four small tripa tacos with home made salsa, a wedge of lime and some onions and cilantro on top. Now THAT is a real taco my friend.
