The Best Fish Tacos in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"The funky Taqueria Portland in Buckman does tacos well, period, but its fish tacos are the clear standout: a heaping taco of fried fish, lettuce, cilantro, pico, radishes, and avocado on a corn or flour tortilla. Taqueria Portland also hawks shrimp tacos, similarly adorned. Order delivery or pick-up via Grubhub, DoorDash, Uber Eats, or Postmates." - Jenni Moore

Google
a solid Mexican spot with a huge menu with all your favorites. Friendly service with a small dining room and tiny patio out front for seating. Food was very good, house made salsa amazing…have to admit, I wish they had better chips for it.

Google
From the customer service to the food this place is great! Staff is super friendly and helpful and the food is delicious and full of flavor! Prices are super reasonable! If we lived here we would make this place a regular stop lol. Definitely suggest stopping In and grabbing a bite!

Google
I was so excited to take the lime chips that I had bought and take this case of beans home and eat them and to my disappointment, they had been exploded in the bag because they were packaged so poorly, and it makes me wonder if the employees carry at all UPDATE: One thing I will always respect is a business that tries to resolve the situation and they reached out to me asked me if they could remake the entire order gave it to me for free and apologized profusely for how the beans were Packaged. They even told me that they’ve changed their practices around how they package their food because of the review they got so how could I not leave such stellar service of five star rating again? Absolutely go visit this place. The food is pretty good and they really care about their customers

Google
Excellent service and the food is absolutely delicious. Joseph went above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience , he was friendly, attentive, and made us feel truly welcome. I’ll definitely be coming back.

The atmosphere at the Taqueria Portland next to Key Bank on Morrison Street is akin to that of a vibrant bar, ideal for socializing. The customer service is exemplary, and the food ranks among the finest Mexican cuisine I have ever enjoyed. Each visit is a unique and memorable experience. I frequently come here during my lunch breaks, and one of my recent meals stood out as exceptional. The culinary skills of the cooks are truly impressive. This establishment deserves the highest praise—an unequivocal five stars and a perfect ten out of ten.

Google
Came here for the first time today, and thought the food and service was amazing. The food was delicious and decent portio . I've been looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant near me for a while now, and i'm glad I found this hidden gem, I know I'll be frequenting this place more now. The prices here are reasonable too.

Google
Wowee zoweee! Just tried this place for the first time because I drive by it 5 days a week and today I got off early. 10/10! The fella working the counter was very friendly and that is appreciated and so rare in these unprecedented times. I got the Cali burrito. It was massive. Tiny crunchy fries inside just the way I like it. Loaded me up with green sauce as requested. Inside it was chill, clean and comfy. Heck I'd bring my parents in here if they ever want to see me again. Also parking in a real true bonafide parking lot made the experience stress free (Im a bad driver) I will return with friends.

Google
The food was amazing!!! The service was good too! It was pretty quick, and the checkout person was very friendly. I would definitely go here again.

Yelp
The food is reasonably priced. the customer service five the place is clean bathroom smell good. The guacamole is chunky conveniently located right here by Grand Central bowling alley. They have a full bar come get a shot of tequila.

Yelp
This place was great! I feel like I always have trouble finding good taco spots in the heart of Portland, and this place was such a pleasant surprise. And there was a parking lot with actual spots at lunchtime! Unheard-of! I got three tacos, and each of them were really good. They were a good size for the price. I would definitely recommend this spot for weekday lunch! The service was also fantastic and everybody was super nice and helpful. Also, the menu is huge and there is a ton of stuff to choose from. So if it's your first time you can look it up ahead of time or they have paper menus you can grab and look at!

Yelp
Taqueria Portland is a good taqueria. I've gotten a Chile verde super burrito and some horchata from them a few times. The horchata isn't great. It may be a mix. The burrito is good. The meat is tender and delicious. It's filled nicely with all of the components. Overall, Taqueria Portland is a solid spot for Mexican food in southeast Portland.

Yelp
Taqueria Portland has delicious burritos & enchiladas mole. The restaurant is bright & clean. The staff is super friendly & helpful. You must give them a try.

Yelp
This is the best Mexican food I've found in SE Portland so far. Everything I've tried has been very tasty. Highly recommend!

Eddy M.

Yelp
This place is great!! Here visiting from the Bay Area, I didn't know what to expect from pdx Mexican food. I tried a couple different places but left a little disappointed each time. This place left me 100% satisfied. Super clean atmosphere, very friendly service, great prices and the quality of the food was on point. The salsas were great, the verde (green) was my favorite. Will definitely be back. Solid taqueria with open seating. Thank you!!

Yelp
I used to love this place. I still like this place and will return. This visit they got my take away order wrong. I saw it unfold. I ordered a super burrito and the party behind me ordered three burritos of sorts. When they were prepping our orders I could see the staff talking with the cook and there was some confusion and lots of conversation. Yep I suspect the party behind me got my super chicken burrito and I got their regular chicken burrito or there's very little guac in the supers now. My guess is the former. I still love the vibe here, the salsa and the people. Mistakes happen and look forward to returning.

Yelp
Big beautiful burritos! We stopped in for lunch and I got the best burrito I've had so far in Portland. We ordered at the counter and out food was out to us a few minutes later. I had a carne asada burrito wet red and it was AMAZING! The red sauce was so tangy. The meat was tender and juicy and the burrito was busting at the seams. My only regret was that my stomach wasn't bigger, I could not finish my burrito in one sitting. It ended up being my dinner as well as my lunch. I will be back to try more options out!
google avatar

Yelp
Great food! The service is good and you get free chips for eating in! I fully recommend this restaurant!

Yelp
My torta was pathetic, but her quesadillas were very good. It was what happened to both of us about 14 hours later that was surprising and awful. Seriously, my torta had the thinnest slathering of carnitas and almost nothing else, a few shreds of lettuce and cheese, no guacamole or avocado, no beans I could find, really just toast with what might as well have been meat. spread But the real story of course was that both of us and our hurlers all developed food poisoning the next day, ourselves in 14 hours, our friend more like 16. NEVER AGAIN.

Yelp
I had this place awhile ago and WOW. Probably one of the best Mexican Food spots in Portland - I kid you not. I got a super burrito, breakfast burrito, shrimp taco, and bean burrito and all of it was really good. Overall, it was just high quality Mexican food and ingredients. Will for sure go there again!

Yelp
In my (seemingly) never-ending quest to find the perfect Mexican food in Portland (the closer to my place in SE the better) we ordered delivery from this spot the other night, and, overall, I'd give it a 4.5 star rating! I'll have to go again to be sure, and here's why... The tacos were very good, according to my (Chicano) husband. He got carne asada and carnitas tacos. We would definitely order these again! We also ordered a bean and cheese burrito. Either they were running low on cheese or they just don't give you very much. It was a good-sized burrito for the price, but the cheese was almost non-existent. Also, the tortilla seemed like it was verging on being stale. Despite all that, it was still really good. The beans made it delicious in the end. But back to the lack of cheese: I ordered carne asada nachos and I asked for no cotija cheese, but it seems like they left off the Monterey Jack cheese, too!? I don't remember seeing or tasting ANY cheese. That fact, plus the lack of cheese in the bean and cheese burrito, made me think it's either how they use cheese in general (sparingly) or maybe they were almost out and trying to conserve? Either way, it was a bummer. I also asked for the jalapenos on the side, and they did not include them. Not a HUGE deal, but it's annoying when you really want your peppers on the side of your nachos instead of on top and then you don't get them at all! Having said that, you might be surprised to read that I think they were some of the very BEST nachos I've ever had. The chips seemed homemade (SO GOOD!), and there was just the right amount of chips to toppings ratio. Everything was SO delicious! (Despite the lack of cheese.) I can only think of one place that had nachos that were better, down in Southern California in a spot that has long since closed. I think Taqueria Portland could beat them IF they were more generous with the cheese. I'm definitely going to give this spot another try, and soon! If there are any significant changes I'll update my review. :) For now, I'd definitely recommend it!

Yelp
Delish! Great COVID protection measures and quick service. Stopped in for take out and ordered at the counter - protected by a barrier. Large menu but I looked at it ahead of time and knew what I wanted. Got a number and waited outside to stay out of the way. Seats were spaced out and labeled so keep distance amongst customers. Got my food in 5 minutes or so and she brought it outside. I took it home to eat and it was packed up nicely. Pastor tacos were on point! Perfect spice, juicy meat, fresh crunch of veggies. I added sour cream which was a nice cooling end to the bite. I'll try more the next time I'm in the area. Small parking lot with free parking.

Yelp
We highly recommend this place. Coming from the Bay Area where there's a plethora of authentic Mexican food, between restaurants and food trucks we thought we'll not find a good Mexican food here. BUT we're super excited and happy to try this place. Very professional, kind, friendly, flexible and welcoming. Come try Taqueria Portland. We'll be back :)

Yelp
The food tasted great. The tacos were delicious and the burrito was great . The salsa was great. Overall I would recommend eating here

Yelp
I've been meaning to update my review for a while now, but with coronavirus in full swing, it had been almost 3 weeks since we'd eaten out. We decided to change that, and find out if our favorite Mexican place is still serving... a ray of hope shined down on me as I stopped by on my way home from work and found they have limited hours for takeout (10am to 2:30pm most days, except Sunday... call to confirm!)!! My first review based solely on 1 experience there when I randomly stopped by for some tacos. I've since returned to this location at least 50 times (sometimes, I've got twice a week, but these were the PRE coronavirus days). I've tried many a thing from this taqueria, and everything has either been good or downright excellente! The star of the menu for me is their taco salads... holy crap. Perfectly crispy, in house made shells filled with rice, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, cilantro, cotija, and your choice of protein... sometimes they swap in some cabbage with the lettuce, and other ingredients (this has happened a couple of times), but it's ALWAYS delicious. All of the employees I've interacted with are friendly, helpful, and just awesome people. I love Taqueria Portland!! If you like spice, they have an in house habanero sauce that is AWESOME. Be warned though... it's HOT! ;)

Yelp
The food was amazing. I brought one director, three principals and an instructional specialist... everyone was super happy with the food. My fish tacos were the best ever. The service was great; the lady at the register was very patient. It was a nice place to eat- clean, bright and cheerful. I'm a continent away, but I'll go next time in in Portland.

Gayle B.

Yelp
Some of you say they got free chips. I didn't , paid $4 dollars for them. $10 for a margarita good flavor but no booze. Burritos are pretty good. The enchilada sauce tasted like marinara sauce from a frozen lasagna.

Yelp
We drove across town because this place said it was open until 9:00. We get there at 7:55 and it is already closed. The staff was incredibly rude. We won't be back, and definitely won't recommend. Maybe the management should change the hours online so you they don't have more irritated customers.

Toby D.

Yelp
The steak in my fajita burrito tasted rancid, I threw it away after 2 bites. The steak in my taco was just as bad. Awful stuff.
google avatar

Allison S.

Yelp
One of my favorite Mexican places in Portland! Delicious tacos, tortas and quesadillas - definitely looking forward to trying more things on the menu. So far it hasn't disappointed

Sarah G.

Yelp
Just tried their new location on Johnson Creek. The food was great! Quick service! Unfortunately this location doesn't have a liquor license yet.
google avatar

Lauren G.

Yelp
Super nice people and super good food. I recommend the Chile relleno burrito. Coming from FL, I moved here and still yearned for this kind of flavor and almost gave up, thinking I'd never be able to taste this sort of labor of love until I travelled back to the east coast. Not only was my experience really good, it definitely made me feel less homesick. Thank you!
google avatar

Charlie T.

Yelp
I remember when they used to be out in the N. Portland area by St. Johns. The place is still a good place to get a wide range of tacos for a decent price. Not only are the tacos tasty, they have a great chops and salsa that they give out with each order. The place is counter service and has seating for about 20 people. During the nice days, they have a couple of tables outside.
google avatar

Astrid B.

Yelp
Delicious. Some of the best mexican food I've had. Go here. The place was cool too and a great place to hang out and eat with friends.

Flora F.

Yelp
No manches.... This place was decent when I moved here 3 years ago, but as of now, giving it a few tries, this place is off my list. I've had a few things from this place and each time it was a disappointment. Shrimp is over cooked, greasy, chimichangas taste stale, the rice is dry and hard. Absolutely unacceptable.
google avatar

Kevin W.

Yelp
Enjoy a tortilla filled burrito. I'd like my money back, bit instead I'm going to mucho gracias. :( Appropriate names"portland taqueria" very portland if you ask me. Muchos gracias has Twice as many ingredients for half the price. I'm pretty bummed I didn't go there

Yelp
I've held back on this review for some time now because I do like the food. But I can't any longer. Worst customer service I've experienced in a long time. The woman that's been working there for years behind the counter taking orders is just as rude as can be. It's like she doesn't want you to order food or talk to her... it's very strange. I've been sweet as pie to her to try to counteract the venom. Even asking her name so I could say hello more personably the next time. But it's a no go. No good side I've seen. I used to go here often because it's near my office. But 75% of the time she is dismissive, rude, arrogant, and condescending. I stop going, then I'll give it a try again, just to realize she still not a kind person. It wasn't just a "bad day" or an "off day." This is just how she acts towards people. The stars for this review are for the burritos which are good... assuming you can handle getting treated like dirt first. Even with take out or ordering to go, it's the same horrible experience.

Yelp
I ordered a bean rice and cheese burrito w onions and cilantro and it cost $7.50. This pic is after 3 bites. I didn't order a kids burrito but that's what they gave me. 7 bites and the burrito was gone. Flavor was good but man this is way Overpriced. These ingredients cost next to nothing. I'm a vegetarian and am sick of paying like I've ordered a steak.

Jacob S.

Yelp
To be honest, I feel like every one of my positive restaurant reviews ends up being some variation of "fresh and delicious" and "considerate of vegetarians." It's kind of hard to write consistently original content about restaurants, because in most cases, food is either good, or it isn't. But Taqueria Portland has very good food, and I want to recognize them for that, even if I don't have anything groundbreaking to say. The food tastes great, the prices are fair, they get orders right - and, yes, they are considerate of vegetarians. I highly recommend the wet burrito!
google avatar

Yelp
We get this at work when we run Saturday shifts. The white people at work REALLY love it.
google avatar

Yelp
Pozole, shrimp taco, super burrito and beer for $23! You can't beat those prices. Popped in for a quick bite. Good smelling food and a pleasant atmosphere. They had some college basketball on and the young people inside were enjoying it. The service was friendly and the food came out pretty quick. Great portions and pricing. I would rate them a 4.5. The dingers were that they had a full bar but no mixer like cranberry juice to go with the vodka. Also, the Pozole was missing some flavor. Like, I used all the add-ins and asked for cilantro, but it still was missing something taste-wise. I would come back, but stick with their tacos and burritos. Much better flavors.
google avatar

Ernie B.

Yelp
I'm sure the food is fantastic but maybe language barrier maybe an issue for this restaurant. A simple thing of a Quesadilla should not be a problem to make. 71 Rob or Rob said the timeline but there's no check my stock items mobile Sorry but customer should be always right. I ask nothing be put on it except meat & cheese but it came with all of those items on it. I asked it to be made correctly but they had replied they would not at first But then the manager got involved and said they would remake it. At that point I was no longer hungry and they never once offered to credit my card back. Food may be good but I wouldn't know! #DisappointedInNotImpressed

Yelp
If you're looking for a spot that has big, delicious burritos, this is it. Got the Mojado Burrito with mild sauce on top & it was so delicious! And guess what? It comes with guacamole in it, so no need to pay extra for it! Along with guac, it has cheese, beans, cilantro, onions, sour cream, lettuce, & your choice of meat. They also give you a side of chips & salsa. The burrito was close to $10, so it wasn't cheap by any means, but the portion was large & it tasted good, so I didn't mind splurging a bit. Will need to go back to try some of the other many items on the menu!

Yelp
Just east of the water, I've eaten here numerous times when in PDX. Expansive menu that is a little hard to parse, given the way it's laid out. Lots of veggie options -- many of which can be requested vegan. They have burritos, tacos, tostadas, fajitas, etc. I often order the veggie mushroom burrito. Absolutely massive thing for about $8, comes with grilled peppers, regrows beans, lettuce and tomatoes. Yum. Always comes out fast and is served with bottomless tortilla chips and salsa. Solid spot.

Diana R.

Yelp
The food is so good that we ordered take out twice in one week! I really enjoyed the fish tacos and chicken fajitas! Delicious!!!
google avatar

Samuel M.

Yelp
Best Mexican food spot in Portland! Friendly service, food is great! Meat is well cut and just right. Highly recommended if you're in Portland.
google avatar

Evelyn S.

Yelp
I do love their fish tacos, $3.25 for corn tortillas, $3.05 for flour. The portions are good considering the price. I'm not a huge fan of beans and rice but I have tasted theirs, both pretty standard. They have what appears to be a full bar and a large food menu to choose from. The staff are efficient if not overwhelmingly friendly.
google avatar

Meghan C.

Yelp
Easily the best Mexican food in Portland. Huge menu. Fast service - whether it's stop-in takeout or call ahead. Enormous portions. There are usually at least a few other people ordering food, no matter what day or time it is. Much love for this gem.
google avatar

sonia g.

Yelp
This place is so good. I highly recommend. The food is reasonable priced and delicious. I wished I would have came here earlier in my trip.

Bryan W.

Yelp
I've been going here for years. They have some of my favorite beans and rice in Portland and when they can master something that simple and ubiquitous then you know their other food will be great too. Fish burrito or flautas are my regular go-to's but never without an extra side of pinto beans and rice. Outstanding salsa verde too! Highly recommend

Olivia Y.

Yelp
Quick service and complimentary chips and salsa -- what more could you want! I ordered the Mojado Chile Relleno burrito which was huge and large enough to share with other person. Thankfully for me, I had yummy leftovers the next day. Their house chili sauce and spicy green sauce are great. The green sauce has the perfect amount of spice. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because my burrito had about 30 seeds in it but were easy enough to pick out. I would definitely eat here again!
google avatar

Amber P.

Yelp
Tamale had almost NO filling. Shrimp taco was ok, staff was excellent. ed on food except the fact they made me the wrong Margarita and after a few back and forth conversations they did make me a new one. They wanted to charge me for wrong flavored one but I refused. So the willingness to make me a new one and not demand I pay for wrong one got one more star. Just bla Mexican! I would have only given them two stars bas

Yelp
This review is LONG overdue. Okay...is it wrong to say I am completely IN LOVE with the chile verde burrito mojado with green sauce. It releases endorphins that I didn't even know existed. Well...if loving you is wrong, I don't wanna be right. No rice for me b/c in a burrito it is just filler. This is not for the faint of heart but for the daring and brave. The filling of pork chile verde, refried beans, sour cream, lettuce, onions and cilantro will warm your heart and soul on a cloudy Portland day. You WILL NOT be able to finish it! In fact, my advice is just don't. You will be in a food coma for a couple hours. Save the rest for a delightful lunch the next day! They just started charging for chips and salsa but with inflation I don't mind paying the extra $1.25 and you can get a refill no charge. Get it! As one of my Latin/x friends said...it's legit. I have been frequenting this place for over 10 years back in the St. John's days on Fessenden and they have always been great with service and take out! And hey...if you can't take the heat just get it with the red sauce.
google avatar

Anna N.

Yelp
Stopped by here because the wait for afuri was quoted at 2 hours... solid food and I'd come back again. When you dine in they give you free chips and salsa - both were awesome. Can't beat fresh salsa . Taco salad: waaaay bigger than you think it is and the picture deceptively looks like all lettuce. It was probably only 15% lettuce. I actually could have used more veggies. All the fillings were delicious and the crispy bowl was perfect. 5/5 Horchata was WAY too sweet. It was like drinking syrup. Not sure if it was just off that day, but I would probably try it to see before ordering again. The portion was huge though. We just couldn't finish it because it was too sweet. 2/5

Yelp
This is my favorite Mexican place in Portland. They are closed due to COVID19 and I would love to support this restaurant in some way. I would be so sad if I could never get their home made salsa and mojado burrito again. I have been thinking about how I can help my favorite small businesses and if the owners see this, and want to start doing takeout orders, I can help get your social media set up and help you get some PR and spread the word.

Yelp
Well done Taqueria Portland, I really enjoyed your food today. Well recommended by fellow Yelpers and I see why. We got several different Tacos and a Burrito today along with a couple margaritas. First I have to commend you on you flavor and texture of your food. My taste buds were so freaking happy today. The Pork Verde Tacos were very good, and your red and green salsas again had flavor not just heat. The salsa with your chips was also flavorful, lots of texture and Delicious. I also chowed down a regular Burrito with grilled chicken, and wow here we go again flavor and texture. Theme today is Flavor and Texture. Very clean inside especially the mirrors on the walls no grubby hands prints. Giant menu on the wall, would be nice to have one to hold in my hand to look at. Parking is a challenge in the lot next to the place because of all the spots marked for other businesses. You can find street parking and a garage on 8th. It's worth finding a spot to park.

Yelp
I had a lot of hope for this place. The menu was quite large, it took me a while to figure out what I wanted. Let me first say this place was decent but I'm not sure I would go back because there is definitely better. I appreciated that they had Micheladas- I ordered one with Sol. They served in a standard large glass, the mix was good, could have used more lime but other than that it was a good start. They also give you a small bowl of chips and salsa - not really an even ratio but it did the trick for me as I came very hungry. I ordered the Mojado burrito with grilled chicken half covered in green sauce and half covered in red sauce. The sauce was good, one was decently spicy, I still requested a side of their spicy salsa which is habanero based. I'll be honest, I was really not impressed with this burrito. It lacked in flavor. I was trying to imagine how this burrito would even hold up without the sauce on top. As per usual with wet burritos I used a knife and fork to cut, the issue with this particular burrito was the tortilla was so hard to cut at the bottom. The only thing I had was a butter knife and it really wasn't cutting the extremely hard pieces of tortilla. It turned into a mess and the tortilla was just useless so I ate everything else. Super disappointing. I would say the cheese on top was lacking and I pretty much ran out of sauce I was so hungry and used all the sauce on the plate to drench each bite. My boyfriend got the enchiladas and those were pretty good. Average enchiladas, not bad at all just . The green sauce they have in the bottle was amazing, I think it's the same sauce on the burrito. It tasted different and that was pretty much the best. I liked the atmosphere here. Lots of mirrors which I though was odd, made it feel a lot bigger than it was. The service is kind of lacking but it's not really their fault, the lady taking orders was also cleaning all the tables off. The prices are okay but over 3 bucks for a taco kinda sucks.
