In my (seemingly) never-ending quest to find the perfect Mexican food in Portland (the closer to my place in SE the better) we ordered delivery from this spot the other night, and, overall, I'd give it a 4.5 star rating! I'll have to go again to be sure, and here's why...
The tacos were very good, according to my (Chicano) husband. He got carne asada and carnitas tacos. We would definitely order these again!
We also ordered a bean and cheese burrito. Either they were running low on cheese or they just don't give you very much. It was a good-sized burrito for the price, but the cheese was almost non-existent. Also, the tortilla seemed like it was verging on being stale. Despite all that, it was still really good. The beans made it delicious in the end.
But back to the lack of cheese: I ordered carne asada nachos and I asked for no cotija cheese, but it seems like they left off the Monterey Jack cheese, too!? I don't remember seeing or tasting ANY cheese. That fact, plus the lack of cheese in the bean and cheese burrito, made me think it's either how they use cheese in general (sparingly) or maybe they were almost out and trying to conserve? Either way, it was a bummer. I also asked for the jalapenos on the side, and they did not include them. Not a HUGE deal, but it's annoying when you really want your peppers on the side of your nachos instead of on top and then you don't get them at all!
Having said that, you might be surprised to read that I think they were some of the very BEST nachos I've ever had. The chips seemed homemade (SO GOOD!), and there was just the right amount of chips to toppings ratio. Everything was SO delicious! (Despite the lack of cheese.) I can only think of one place that had nachos that were better, down in Southern California in a spot that has long since closed. I think Taqueria Portland could beat them IF they were more generous with the cheese.
I'm definitely going to give this spot another try, and soon! If there are any significant changes I'll update my review. :) For now, I'd definitely recommend it!
