The 23 Best Late-Night Restaurants In Chicago

"Open until 12am daily Primo Chuki’s is a popular taqueria on the border of Ravenswood and Uptown that's open until 12am every day of the week. This place is good for both carrying out and dining in, and has a large, airy dining room that's great for eating a spread of tacos. We’re big fans of the spicy and tender al pastor. It’s well-seasoned, crispy, and juicy. The flavor is so good it really doesn’t need any salsa (but we like to add it anyway). While you’re at it, get a carne asada taco, too." - adrian kane, john ringor, veda kilaru

My favorite place for taco's up north (Pilsen and Albany Park are obviously better areas for Mexican food generally). Their cabeza and lengua taco's are my favorite & their salsa verde tastes better than other places imo!

This place to me is the very best place to go eat tacos. I live about 45 minutes from there, but i make the trip as often as i can cause they are that good. The portions are very generous. The salsas are really good The waitress is very nice and fast at taking care of everyone, sometimes even El Primo waiters for you when needed. I was disappointed to know that those delicious spicy chips and beans are no longer provided while you wait, but I understand, times are hard. The owner I've known always as Primo. He always and i mean always stops what he's doing to greet and say bye to EVERY SINGLE one of his customers. He understands that simplicity goes a long way if you do it from the heart. That alone makes me want to keep coming back. Keep up the good work, and ill see you soon!!

Three words - $2 Taco Tuesday. Came by on a Tuesday and got a Al Pastor and Pollo (Chicken Tinga) taco. Man these tacos were fat. Loaded to the brim with meat and veggies, and encased in a double lined corn tortilla to ensure it stays. Not much else to say except they were bomb. Both salsas were solid, although i wish they had a bit more heat to them. The inside is like your typical mom and pop Mexican cafe, perfect for a sit down with friends to enjoy some good food. It was busy and the food came out quick too. Staff was friendly and helpful. Don’t walk, run to come try these for a great deal.

Went after the gym, got the taco dinner with two steak and one chicken with double rice no beans and a Jamaica margarita. Also got a side of chunky guacamole. $38 for everything. Pros: - Tacos were very good and they give you a lot of meat. They are not stingy at all with the toppings either. I preferred the steak over the chicken. - Good spicy red salsa, a lot of places these days don’t sell spicy salsas anymore. There is a war on spicy foods:broken_heart: - Marg was very good and cheap ($10) for how big it was. I didn’t know they sold liquor and was surprised to see it on the menu. - Guac was good, seasoned and not too much lime or salt. - Good service, the two women ran that place like the navy and were very kind! Cons: - Chicken taco is ehh, okay. I feel like a lot of Mexican spots chicken tends to be dry. Maybe that is how it is traditionally. I’m not Mexican so please correct me if I’m wrong. The chicken was seasoned though so it made up for it a little. - Horrible rice, just not seasoned at all. Makes me sad when Mexican spots have bad rice. Next time I’ll just get fries or nothing at all. - Marg wasn’t strong. But for $10 I never expected it to be. I know they have stronger drinks on the menu so next time I will try something else. - It is cold in there, but I also sat by the window so if you get easily cold, don’t make the same mistake as me. Overall I will be back. I know they have a $2 taco deal for the fish, chicken, carnitas and veggie tacos on Tuesday and Thursday. But I really like their steak so I may have to become a regular.

Great tacos! I'll come here again. Traditional style, juicy, meat cooked perfect, great people.

Good burrito! Got the burrito al pastor, which was meaty & delicious! The red salsa is atomic hot, watch out when you first taste it! The salsa verde is nice. Minus one star because they forgot the avocado. Can't wait to try the tortas de Milanesa! Addedum: The torta de Milanesa is delicious! Highly recommended!

Google
They have $2 tacos on Tuesdays and Thursdays and I got 24 for my family. They had no problem fulfilling that order. Very tasty tacos as well. Came with a lot of limes which I liked. Would recommend to anyone in the area and I will for sure be making this a regular spot. My favorite was probably their el pastor but all of the ones I tried were good.

Google
This hole in the wall Mexican restaurant is great for taco Tuesday and Thursday for 1.99 each! Meats are lean, juicy and generous. The other plates are big, and we'll priced. They have alot of daily specials that draws in crowds daily. A staple in Uptown/ravenswood.

Google
I walked in to order a Asada (steak)burrito. The portion was good. Nice healthy burrito. But, when I took a bite into it. The steak was hard and crunchy. As if it was cooked twice. When you cook meat twice it becomes hard and almost gravel like. I was highly disappointed. Not even the lettuce and tomatoes could've helped that steak from tasting good. They must pick and choose who they give the "good meat" too. Because they gave me the bogus part of the steak. It's sad. I really wanted to enjoy it. So it became dog food instead. Disappointed. Really. If you're ordering out. It's best you check your steak before you walk out. Make sure it's not hard and crunchy like mine was.

Yelp
This place has awesome, amazing food. You can't go wrong with anything dish on the menu. Excellent service. Casual environment.

Yelp
Ordered takeout. Food was hot when we dove in. GREAT guacamole taste and size for an order (the $10 price was shocking but we got a lot of guac). Burrito was great Pastor tacos were GREAT. I didn't like the steak tacos but that's my own texture issue with cooked onions and peppers-- my partner tried it and loved it!! Both sauces were pretty spicy for me (wimp I know) but again my partner reallllly liked the green sauce. Would try again. Will try to dine in next time!

Yelp
Recently came in again on a Wednesday night with my partner and unfortunately they are no longer BYOB. It was nice while it lasted. They still have the $2 Tuesday and Thursday taco special for Asada, Fish, Cabeza, lengua, and carnitas which is a great deal. I got the asada burrito this time and it was pretty tasty. They still have the same 2 salsas at each table (the green being not spicy at all and the red having a kick). The lengua taco was not good at all. It tasted very flavorless and unseasoned. I will still continue to come back for their Asada tacos and burritos here. They're delicious!

Yelp
I ordered for delivery and the lady who took my order was very kind. Customer service is a plus! I felt like eating a carne asada burrito and my son wanted two steak tostada dinners. The burrito tasted really good and they didn't skimp on the steak at all! The tostadas were fully loaded too. I'd highly recommend this place for anyone who is craving good Mexican food.

Yelp
Ok. Nothing from my previous review has changed except I have more love for this place. After my first visit I have been back multiple times within a week and a half. I get my food quickly and hot. I have now tried the steak taco which is flavorful and plenty and the torta which was really filling. The young lady behind the counter is starting to recognize me.

Yelp
We walked into this place and were surprised to find some of our other team members dining in there for lunch too! I have been here on three occasions and have never been disappointed. The last time five out of the six of us ordered the carne asada torta - the fan-favorite of the five of us. They dice up the carne asada into perfectly tiny bites to help you black out and inhale the torta without problems or interruptions. This explains why I don't have a picture of this delectable sandwich because it was gone in a flash. SoOoOo delicious and evenly balanced. It was a little of a mess, but I regret nothing. We typically have a group of six and can get seated without a problem during lunchtime during the week. They decorate during the holidays, enhancing our experience and giving it a local feel. My other fan favorites to order are the Chilaquiles con carne and tacos. The $2 Taco Tuesday special is almost too good, that mere humans do not deserve food this good for so affordably. Primos, we are not worthy of your greatness!
google avatar

N B.

Yelp
The food here is very unseasoned and flavorless. I got the ribeye, asada, and al pastor tacos and they were all flavorless and disgusting. And don't bother getting the guac, it was terrible too. No flavor at all. I had high hopes for this spot but if you like flavorless Mexican food then this is your spot. Would not recommend
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite taco place in Chicago so amazingly delicious their beans and rice are fire and al pastor taco is the most fire taco to exist
google avatar

Yelp
Every family has a favorite cousin, and I can only assume that Chuki is his family's favorite. Either that, or he has something to prove, because he absolutely put out for these tacos. At this point, I've tried probably everything on their menu, and if you asked me for a rec, I would have to be that guy and say that everything is good. Seriously - try the al pastor, try the carne asada, try the chorizo, and please for the love of god try the tripa. And yes, they have taco Tuesday, so you can get amazingly good food at amazingly low prices. The servers are friendly and quick. The inside is colorful and smells like corn chips and fabuloso (the best scent combo). The jamaica is always fresh, and you should always be planning a trip here

Yelp
My love and I recently dined at Primo Chuki's on a Sunday evening. They have a $1.99 taco deal on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Alas this was a Sunday, but we did order the $7.99 taco dinner deal which includes two tacos along with rice and beans. During our visit there were few diners, but they were doing a brisk takeout business. With the taco deal I was allowed to order two different fillings, so I went with al pastor and carnitas. While the tacos were generously filled with meat, the flavors of the meat were a bit bland for me. We did get some salsa and lime wedges, which I drizzled onto the tacos and the rice. I had high hopes upon entering Primo Chuki's, but I'd say overall the tacos I tasted were just AOK.
google avatar

Audra M.

Yelp
We went in and ordered two taco dinners. For $7.99 each, it's an okay price. However, no free chips with an order, I think. We did not receive any, but a neighboring table did, so I cannot confirm or deny their complimentary chips. Said table could have ordered them, but I do not think they did, as they received them after their soda order. We were just drinking water. I favored the food. Meat was plentiful, and the modest amount of beans and rice with our two taco dinners was tasteful. However, my three-star stems from the fact that there were carts adjacent to the female restroom that were full of soiled dishes that did not smell great. It was rather gross, to be honest. The top plates had food on them, and it just did not smell well. With the size of the place, they could come up with a better plan for soiled plates on an evening where they were not busy at all with dine-in. My final assessment is that this place is skippable, as there are other taco joints in the area that are more pleasant.
google avatar

Lypheng K.

Yelp
Stopped by Taqueria Primo Chukis for dinner. The place was spacious and it was early in the evening so there weren't a lot of customers inside. I got three tacos - al pastor, lengua, and carnitas. All came with cilantro, limes, and onion. The al pastor and carnitas were both delicious. The lengua lacked flavor and was pretty bland. The portions for each tacos were generous so getting three tacos was decently filling.
google avatar

Herb L.

Yelp
Went on a Tuesday night and it was semi busy there so I understand if there's a wait for the food. But I was in line behind the people that had just ordered and the cashier overlooked me and took the order of the people that just walked into the door instead of me. Then after I finally ordered for take out (al pastor taco dinner, al pastor burrito dinner and guacamole and chips) it took at least 20+ minutes for them to get me my order. It shouldn't take that long to cook the food I ordered. Also, the taste of the food was pedestrian. No flavor stood out on the burrito and it was sloppily made. Probably won't return but I wish them luck and improving their product
google avatar

Thomas M.

Yelp
Big ass portions, and delicious food. Good mix between authentic and 'drunk' Mexican food, iykwim Burrito's are the size of a newborn baby Sometimes the food feels a little greasy if youre into that
google avatar

Tom G.

Yelp
I waa disappointed this time with my El Pastor Burrito, it had not one but two bits of gristle that was a turn-off for me. In fairness, this was my first time ordering the El Pastor Burrito it may be different next time. In comparison, I ordered the Chorizo Burrito on my first visit and It was outstanding, perfect in every way, and the amount of meat, and spices was on target with a nice browning of the tortilla. I would order that again without hesitation. I ordered a Chicken Burrito for my friend and she said it was very good. My first there was on a Saturday afternoon to go as well as this time on a Friday around lunchtime, What a huge difference a day makes. The place was packed with dine-in and carry-out customers, There had to be at least a dozen high school kids who walked in, thankfully I ordered a few minutes before them. I waited longer than I thought but the counter lady was right on top of it. I'll be back and try their Steak Burrito next time.

Kelsey B.

Yelp
Damn, those refried beans were good! I don't know what they add to those but they were orange and yummy! Highly recommend.
google avatar

Brigitte S.

Yelp
If you're looking for delicious and authentic Mexican cuisine, I highly recommend trying 'Taqueria Prima Chukis Uptown.' Their traditional dishes are bursting with flavor and were made fresh. From the mouth-watering Fish and Pork Tacos, to the Carna Asada Torta, the generous portion of Guacamole and the flavorful green & red sauce, everything was delicious. The friendly service only added to the overall experience. We will be back!
google avatar

Steven E.

Yelp
Outstanding food here, we get take out all the time. Huge portions strong flavors. Spicy sauces are no joke. Al pastor to die for.
google avatar

Yelp
Ultra greasy and messy steak burrito that fell apart. If this is your vibe then enjoy. 0.7 out of 5.0

Yelp
I heard about this place from a coworker from an old job of mine, and it's been years since I've had it. I was craving tacos one day and wanted to make a trip to Primo Chukis, and I'm glad I did! These tacos definitely hit the spot and tasted just as good as I remember it! The definitely load up the meat in each taco, which is really nice. Once you squeeze some lime juice and put some salsa on it, the flavors definitely all come together. Excited to come back soon!
google avatar

NaBeela W.

Yelp
Whenever you're in Uptown, grab a quesadilla at Taqueria Primo Chuki's. Made fresh to order, I normally grab the quesadilla dinner and add chicken while subbing out the beans for more rice. The venue has a very hole-in-the feel with a moderate amount of seating and easy access to the rest of Uptown/Ravenswood. The food is always made fresh to order and you can dine in or carry out. I believe they also deliver. I'm happy I don't live closer, otherwise I think I'd eat here once a week.
google avatar

Tanya M.

Yelp
If I have a hankering for tacos I'm going to Primo Chukis! My daughter alerted me to this restaurant and I have been hooked ever since. The portions are good, the flavor is great. I have gotten the shrimp tacos but my usual is the veggie. I could get full off of one, but I'm greedy so I get at least two.
google avatar

Jane P.

Yelp
My kid and I stopped after a long afternoon of doing tiring outside activities. She got al pastor, I got carnitas, we both got giant horchatas and proceeded to groan loudly while enjoying the hell out of everything. Man that hit the spot. We're definitely coming back.
google avatar

Anna L.

Yelp
I have been going here for YEARS. Probably like 6-7 years. And I AM SO GLAD PRIMOS HAS ALL THESE WONDERFUL REVIEWS ANS GETTING THE RECOGNITION THEY DESERVE!! HANDS DOWN THE BEST TACO JOINT IN THE CITY. I have been trying tacos everywhere around Chicago and Primo Chuki's continue to reign supreme. Their al pastor and carne asada tacos have not faltered in taste, quality or meat abundance since the first time I was lucky enough to try this place. Their burritos are fat with goodness. I've watched the owners children grow from wee babes to young adults - that's how long I've been going here and I will never stop! Long live Primo Chukis!!!
google avatar

Audra Z.

Yelp
This place never disappoints. Always so tasty and the food is delicious. They make all the salsas in house. Tacos and burritos are our favorites.

Tony M.

Yelp
Used to love coming here but prices are insane! $5 per taco and the meat wasn't too good. Won't be coming here much anymore
google avatar

Bridget M.

Yelp
Update!!!! Have been to Primo Chukis many, many times since my last visit and the Al pastor is amazing. I think you're good if you don't go late night! Love this little taqueria and will continue to frequent this local establishment!

Luis S.

Yelp
Amazing service phenomenal food and great environment. My wife put me on with this place a few years back and taco Tuesdays here have been the move since.
google avatar

Wanda O.

Yelp
I've been ordering takeout and dining in at Chuki's going on ten years. My family and I loved the tacos. Yummy delicious Mexican food!

Josh G.

Yelp
Great find for Mexican food in the Ravenswood neighborhood. Prices are beyond reasonable when compared to the likes of other Mexican spots in the area such as Taqueria El Asadero where the standard burrito will cost you $20+. I got a carne asada burrito for $11.49 and it was fantastic. Although a little bit on the greasy side, the meat was super flavorful and the combination of the refried beans and cheese really worked together nicely. Additionally, it was large enough to satisfy my hunger (something that's quite difficult considering that I always seem to be hungry). Their salsa verde is also some of the best I've had as well. I will definitely be back to try their $2 Tuesday fish taco deal and other offerings.

Mary D.

Yelp
Portions are huge and prices very reasonable. An order of guacamole was a little less than $10 and more than enough for four of us. We were close to full before entrees arrived. We all have leftovers and this includes two teenage boys who have big appetites. Food was tasty but nothing spectacular.
google avatar

Morgan M.

Yelp
Good a** tacos and food. What more can anyone ask for? And they're open much later than most, which is rare! Totally go here, you won't regret it.
google avatar

Phil S.

Yelp
06/23/20 - I didn't feel like cooking and it was taco Tuesday. My sis and I ate at a place up in Winnetka for lunch where I had (what else tacos) that cost $6/taco. I went back to Primo Chuki's (one of my standbys) for a good old fashioned TACO TUESDAY where they have pork or chicken tacos for $1.50/taco on Tuesday & Thursday. I got 4 tacos for my wife and myself for $6 same price I paid for a single taco in Winnetka. This is why Primo Chuki's is my stand by. They always have great quality food for a fraction of the cost of most taco joints. I have seen the light!!! Do I believe? Yes I believe in PRIMO CHUKI's. Great food for great prices. I will definitely be bac
google avatar

Jillian M.

Yelp
If you want REAL tacos, this is the spot in Ravenswood/ Uptown area. Everything is always so good and I have never had a "bad" order from here. Generally, I can call in an order and it's ready in under 30 minutes. So happy to have found this neighborhood gem.
google avatar

Susan S.

Yelp
Small clean, friendly and delicious . Lengua tacos were amazing ,so tender and delicious. Chili eel kenos was excellent piping hot . I love that the food wasn't salty you can always add salt right. Girls were wonderful I just wish it was closer. I will definitely come back . Nice My brother took me here so this will be on my roster for sure, I loved it . Give it a try was excellent !
google avatar

Molly E.

Yelp
We ate here today for the first time. We tried the Al pastor, steak, and chicken tacos. They were delicious. The prices were fair and the staff was friendly. I highly recommend.

Kassie S.

Yelp
Always delicious. I first had Primo Chukis over ten years ago, and I've never been disappointed. Vegetarian options are on point- tacos and tortas are always a great option. Horchata is a must.
google avatar

Antony P.

Yelp
The food was amazing, everything had flavor and tasted really well. Only downside was the wait time, I felt like a good 30-40 minutes for my table to receive their food. But over all the food was great!
google avatar

Christina A.

Yelp
Get the nachos and the tacos. Carne Asada and Carnitas. The family is super friendly and willing to make suggestions. If you dine in, it's BYOB. The taco dinner with three tacos of your choice and rice and beans and it creates the perfect dinner. Handmade green and red salsa are a great compliment. Don't bother getting chips and salsa when you should order nachos. Hand fried chips, cheese (not nacho cheese sauce), sour cream, beans, meat of your choice, pickled jalapeños and guacamole. Add extra guacamole and skip the sour cream personally.
google avatar

Ben H.

Yelp
I'll just keep writing these reviews until the place gets "discovered" by some food writer. The food is always perfect. The prices are great and the service is top notch. Oh also open pretty late. Love this place.
google avatar

June F.

Yelp
Came in with my youngest son for lunch. Food was delicious!! He had steak burrito and I ordered salad with chicken and side of guacamole. Service was excellent. Place was spotless and food was so good! Cheap and delicious! Who needs more than that???
google avatar

Brian H.

Yelp
Great stop after a show at the Riv. The tortas and burritos are done very well. I had a torta Al pastor. The pastor is done right with the right balance of sweet and savory.
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
A must try for tacos. They have so many options for the tacos. Authentic Taqueria salsas and flavors. I never had Cabeza but it is really good here. As well try the Al Pastor and Carne Asada. The piña drink is so good too. I highly recommend this spot for tacos. I'll be back someday for sure
google avatar

Abby Z.

Yelp
We definitely have high standards for steak tacos and we've got couple great taco places that we consider to be our go to spots for steak tacos. I wanted to expand my list and try a new spot as backup so when I found this place with the high reviews I decided to give it a shot. Unfortunately, it didn't meet our expectations and I had to throw away both tacos we got as taste test. First, they are charging a lot of taco! I paid $10 for 2 steak tacos that lacked seasoning and were drenched in oil, to the point where I felt sick afterwards. I think they could possibly improve if they changed their recipe to include at least salt or some type of seasoning and reduce the amount of oil they are using. Otherwise, the cost doesn't justify the flavor.

Matt T.

Yelp
Good food, great price. Always friendly & kind... very welcoming! Unfortunately we aren't in the area enough to remember to bring our biz there. Trying to get better about that
google avatar

Dominique R.

Yelp
Discovered another authentic taco place in the north side. Their tacos are so good. I personally love the al pastor with onion and cilantro. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, they do tacos for $1.50 each which is a steal. I felt like I was in California experience authentic Mexican food. Definitely a take out place! The salsas are tasty and perfect to add some spicy to the tacos.
google avatar

Stephanie P.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my take out from Primo Chuki's. I typically have been ordering Mexican take out from the same place for the last few years, but decided to try something different- and I am very glad I did. I ordered Steak Tacos with rice and beans. The tacos were large and very flavorful. Their refried beans were also incredible and some of the best I have ever had. Prices are very reasonable for the quality and portion sizes.

Tool W.

Yelp
Foods is really good. It's my go to place when i dog sit in the area. I call ahead and it's always ready. Taco days are the best i buy enough for a few days lol
