The Best Restaurants in Sacramento, Roseville, and Elk Grove | Eater SF

"It’s not exactly difficult to find solid Mexican food in Sacramento, but it’s not often you can consistently taste the pride and love that went into making it. Taqueria Rincón Alteño has been operating in Natomas for nearly 20 years and is often mentioned fondly by Sacramento natives who don’t even live in the capital anymore. That’s because the restaurant nails the basics: The rice maintains a starchy chew, whether tucked into a Super Burrito or served with beans alongside a pair of melty cheese enchiladas; salsas are made fresh and packed with a depth of flavor; and pozole, when it’s available, offers a perfect textural harmony between crunchy hominy and rich shreds of pork." - Tamerra Griffin

This was my first time trying this place, and I can confidently say the positive reviews are well-deserved. The restaurant was exceptionally clean—staff were actively tidying even though everything already looked spotless. I ordered the chicken chimichanga, which was absolutely delicious. The chicken was flavorful and well-seasoned, and the portion size was very good as well. My partner had the crispy chicken tacos, which were also excellent—the chicken was tasty, and the cheese was perfectly melted. The salsa at the salsa bar stood out. Overall, a great experience. We’ll definitely be coming back.

Been there a few times on my way home from work, food is good, love there salsa! , ice cold beer Thanks for taking the time to read my short review😎

Google
This is a solid spot. The staff are friendly and the portions are large. They have a free chips and salsa bar and free refills on fountain drinks and agua fresca. It’s mostly clean but there was a fly buzzing around our food the entire time we were there

Google
Outstanding quesabirria and yummy breakfast burritos - get the #1 with eggs, chorizo, and potatoes. It's enough for 2 meals.

Pedro Lopez

Google
The menudo was okay, the enchiladas were good, and everything was fine. I think the worst part about this experience is I felt like I was eating at a gas station. If I'm paying 20 for a plate, I want more than plastic plates, plastic forks, and plastic salsa holders. I understand why restaurants do it. It just communicates they don't care about our health or how their presentation looks. Styrofoam for beans and rice? Come on.

Google
Food, service and atmosphere are all 5 stars. I am giving an overall rating of 3 stars because of the significant price increase. Steak ranchero is now $22.36 and with a soda and tips on top, it is over $30 for a meal. Looking back at the prices a year ago. The same dinner plate was just over $19. So I won't be back again for a while.

Google
My family and I had breakfast at this joint this morning. Cashier was very friendly. We found plenty of parking. They have an accessible ramp for people with wheelchairs, so that’s good. The food was honestly average and not what we expected based on the reviews. We got a Pastor Super Burrito, Pastor Super Nachos and Chicken Super Nachos. They offer chips at an additional price and they have a free salsa bar. The green salsa was good, but we did not like the rest of the salsas. I didn’t like the fact they charge you an additional fee to get chips when most restaurants include the chips on the cost of the food they serve. I feel like you are nickel-and-dimeing people when you do that.

Google
Had a taco salad because I seen them frying the shells ....it was a great choice and the prices are decent besides choices of meat you can also get whole or refried beans I got refried this time but I'm trying whole next time

Yelp
Amazing fantastic food. Great staff and fair prices. The crispy Carnitas tacos were fantastic as was the posole. Cannot wait to come back

Yelp
Ouch this one's hard! I was here when this place first opened and was quite a regular. I have a lot of great memories with my son here. It's been a while since I've been here. However, this is the third time that I came and it just wasn't what it used to be for me. If you order anything here, get the crispy tacos they are the best by far. They've never changed really good. Service is always good. The place is big. They opened up the second side, which is nice and they have a lot of area seating outside. My problem is tonight is the first night that I was met with lower than expected expectations One please note you will be paying for chips. When I asked if you want chips, the person at the register didn't say I'd be charged that's number one also for dining in being charged for chips. I don't know why anyone would charge for chips; but that's a huge turn off for me no matter the price I'm sad to say I don't know that I'll come back here except for when my mom wants to come because she really likes their crispy tacos Today I got flautas 2 -5 I was disappointed by the size. It definitely has changed. The beans and rice with it we're good. I did want to ask her for a flower tortilla, but I wasn't sure what they would charge me for it. I will say this the water is amazing. It's really good. It's so funny because I was thinking it and then I was told it as we were sitting there eating. I was sitting there, disappointed that I was gonna rate them 4 stars because as I said, this use to be 5 stars. What happened to make it go down to A 3 star was my husband ordered the chimichanga burrito with wet sauce over it. We thought there might've been a mistake. Maybe we got the wrong order. Maybe we ordered wrong even though I knew I did not but all in all when he took the burrito up they said they don't fry it. I'm sorry that's just not a chimichanga. For a $50 bill - I really expect for more than just my water to taste good. Hopefully, in the future, they take some of those fees away. I know for me I would be upset if I would've ordered some other food that I seen that people got charged for as far as they charged for. Birria sauce. Prices are decent, but I'm sad to say I did not want to give this review

Yelp
Came to enjoy a shrimp cocktail and one of my favorite crispy chicken tacos With an ice cold Michelada. This is definitely my go to when it comes to crispy chicken tacos. Tortilla shell not too crispy, fried perfect enough to bite into without shell breaking comes with lettuce, tomato and cheese. Perfect with their spicy tomatillo salsa. Food is always made fresh to order & comes to the table quick and service is always great.

Yelp
Me and my boyfriend went on a Friday night. The ambiance is all right nothing fancy. They have a salad bar full of different salsas and you pay for chips which are .50. The food seems like homemade Mexican food. I tried the pozole and my boyfriend got the steak fajitas plate which comes with meat stir fried with bell peppers and onions, tortillas, rice, guacamole, and beans. My pozole came with cabbage, onions, and 4 tostadas. It only had a little bit of meat which kind of disappointing. It was pretty spicy but it was good. The cashiers are friendly and they bring out the food very fast. We've gone there a couple of times and they always give big portions for the price and everything is good.

Yelp
The cóctel was BOMB. Perfect sweetness. The SAUCES YALL, it's a must, it's worth it as well. So goooood. definitely the new spot. Was recommended to me and I highly recommend this to you!

Yelp
Time for an update! Tried them again last night for dinner since I had a 530 appt at my vet's office next door. I ordered online so I would not have to wait and scheduled it for 5:15. Didn't realize there was a $1.75 convenience fee til after I paid but it gives you 7% rewards to use later that slightly exceeded it. I arrived at 5:20 and not only was it not ready, it was not started til I got there. It took less than ten minutes for them to make it which should have been a sign. I ordered 2 birria tacos, super burrito and super nachos for $37. Birria has become very popular recently so I like to try how different places make it. Do NOT get them here. They were not authentic and they charge an extra $2 for the consume dip. Most places it comes with at least a small side of it. They also put rice and salsa inside it which ruins the whole texture. Little cheese and no flavor. The shell was super soggy when it should be crisp. It was so bad that we both had two bites and threw it away. The burrito was hefty but meat was scarce for $12. It was mostly rice and beans. The nachos were also just eh. Hardly any cheese. I asked for sour cream on the side and there was none. The only saving grace is that their chips and salsa bar is pretty good. I like the variety and freshness. The place is clean and the staff are generally nice. I always prefer to support the small business but I don't think I will be back anytime soon. Very disappointed!

Yelp
Burritos today's for lunch with the co-worker. Food was great, place was clean, prices were pretty good. Waitress was super friendly and cleaned the table before we sat down. Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 was that both burritos fell apart while eating. Finished the burrito up with a fork. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
I've been here a few times over the years, before and after the pandemic. In all that time, the food quality and quantity have stayed consistent. If you want good, hearty, no frills Mexican food, Taqueria Rincon Alteno is the spot to go in Natomas. I've been here for lunch and dinner. It gets busy at lunch so I prefer coming in for a later dinner when it isn't so crowded. So far, I've tried their carnitas and carne asada both in burritos and their dinner platters. Their whole beans are cooked exactly how I like them, still a little firm and with very little liquid. The rice is perfectly fluffy each time. I had their posole on a cold, rainy day and it hit the spot. On my last visit, I had their carne asada nachos. At first I thought there was no way I could eat the whole thing, but I underestimated myself. The toppings were generous without turning the whole thing into a soggy mess. The guacamole was outstanding. I will definitely be back for this. The restaurant is clean and tidy. Service was good. Our order was taken promptly and our food came out shortly thereafter. TRA is located in a strip mall next to an Indian market and Filipino restaurant. Parking was plentiful. I will most definitely be back for the posole and the nachos.

Yelp
This is a quick and decent Mexican food place in Northern Sacramento. The inside has some seating but probably better to-go. The menu is fairly complete. The salsa bar has a decent selection and the chips are in a self serve warmer. My only issue was the bragging on Yelp of how this was so much better than the others. The food was good but didn't stand out above other places. But comments just lead to too much hype that this place couldn't live up to. Just to be clear there is nothing wrong with the food. The staff was great for the 10 minutes I was there. If staying in the area again I may return. But I would not pass multiple places to come here.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was good and what you'd expect at a taqueria. Nothing special or amazing. Service was fine, again, nothing special. Here's my main issue - the price of the food was extremely high!! Ordered a flautas plate (3 flautas) and it was almost $22! I literally had to check with the cashier to confirm that was the correct price. In what world are we charging $22 dollars for 3 flautas and some rice/beans at a taqueria? Then to have the audacity to charge you for chips is so cheap and tacky, in my opinion. I just dropped $80 dollars and now I have to pay for my chips too!? So many other equally good taquerias in Natomas that cost half the price. I definitely won't be coming back here!

Yelp
My go to for crispy chicken tacos. The service is always great, fast. I live close so I'm a regular.
google avatar

Julee L.

Yelp
Tastes legit. So glad I swing over here then Chipotle. You got that family run vibe. Cozy
google avatar

Sheila F.

Yelp
My favorite taqueria in the area and overall for the value! I typically order to-go and it is always served fast and fresh. The venue is very spacious and offers adequate amount of seating. I also love the self-serve salsa and chips area. I have ordered a ton of different things from here usually a plate meal with either enchiladas, carnitas, fajitas and/or tacos. The flavors are amazing and their consistency with their dishes is applaudable. You can't miss with such a diverse and extensive menu. I've also ordered them via delivery several times as well and it always arrives hot and fresh. If you're looking for a great, filling meal, they are an excellent stop!

Ignacio H.

Yelp
La comida estuvo increíble. Deliciosa. El personal fue muy amable y cortés. Sin duda, recomiendo volver.

Yelp
I love this place. Al pastor is legit. The nachos are delicious. The salsas are tasty. Seems to be kept clean. Repeat customer!
google avatar

Dave S.

Yelp
Working at another branch in area and everyone said come here for tacos. So what did I do? Got a Carnitas Burrito. The meat was good but over all was a just ok. The beans did not help it, to watery. BUT.. the mango salsa was GREAT! The chips come fresh out of a warmer. The place was clean and did have a lot of people in there. I did notice they all had Tortas or Tacos. Staff was nice. Food came out Fast! I would return, really want to try the tortas.

Michael P.

Yelp
The food is salty and greasy. For what they charge you can get better food at a restaurant with full service.

Brian T.

Yelp
Amazing food and service! Great Carnitas and even better shrimp. Flavorful, consistent, and timely. Great daily specials too. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
I recently tried their Birria tacos. Man it was good! Consume was on point and the tacos were nice and crispy. I love this place!!
google avatar

Tiara B.

Yelp
First time trying Taqueria Rincon Alteno and will certainly be back! I ordered a lunch taco plate that came with two chicken crispy tacos, rice, and refried beans. Everything was good! My food was fresh and delicious. They do have some tables for dining in. This is a popular place because every table was filled when I went. If you're in the Natomas area looking for Mexican food, go here!
google avatar

Rubi T.

Yelp
Delicious tacos and love their salsa. Been here twice for lunch and def will be back :)

Don M.

Yelp
Nothing wrong with the food. Same as it's always been. Greasy( I'm talking more than jimboys), hot, never bad. However, what am I paying $86 for a family of 4 at a taqueria? Again, food is, as it always was. But $21 for a 3 flauta plate. Cmon! Then you wanna charge $1 for a chip basket? I'd rather you go back to the poster menus and stop charging ridiculous prices to pay for your led tv menus. There are so many other cheaper, same quality taquerias in Natomas. I'm assuming you know what you're doing, but $86 ain't for us.
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Used to go here years back last time we lived in Sacramento. Forgot about it for a minute, but saw it one day and thought I'd see if it was still good. Definitely was. Service was quick and friendly. Food was great. Good price also.
google avatar

Ant G.

Yelp
This our go to spot and it's close to where we live as returning customers. Wifey was craving Mexican food so we had dinner here. I had two shrimp tacos. One soft and the other hard shell. Came with their sauce and it was delicious. We never sat in the adjoining dining room which had a couple customers. Their food menu never disappoints! Get here!!
google avatar

April W.

Yelp
This is my fave taqueria in Natomas for the last 20 years, and trust me when i say that i've tried A LOT of them. I haven't tried anything there that i didn't like. Carne plates, burritos, salads, street tacos, crunchy tacos, quesadillas, nachos, chile relleno, enchiladas, shrimp cocktail...all fantastic. And their salsas are not tame. Full of flavor and pack a punch. I would go here any and every day if i could. They are friendly, clean, spacious, quick and flavorful. A great place to go and watch a soccer game or boxing match too. Don't miss out on this local gem.
google avatar

mui d.

Yelp
Clean friendly place, good sauce. But everything I ordered was loaded up with salt. Chili Verde was super salty & the burritos. So Salty it was inedible for us. You should try still, and support local mom & pops....
google avatar

Caren Gale C.

Yelp
We ordered a super burrito and quesabirria tacos. They ran out of rice, and when we asked if we could sub it for something else, they could but for extra charge. It didn't feel right considering rice is such an essential ingredient in burritos. For the quesabirria tacos, it did have a good amount of meat, but the overall flavor was okay.
google avatar

Andrew D.

Yelp
This is probably one of the better Mexican spots in Natomas in my opinion. They have a decent menu, I got the carne asada dinner plate which came with a few tortillas and you can choose between corn or flour, guacamole, sour cream, rice, beans which can be pinto or refried, and the meat. That was pretty filling and the price wasn't bad. I also tried the carne asada quesadilla and that was a 8/10 for me. I like how you can refill your chips as many times as you want BUT you do have to pay $1 for the basket to get chips. Other Mexican restaurants offer it for free so that was a bummer. The good thing is the chips were kept warm. The salsa bar wasn't too special and had the same/usual options that other places have already. The service was fast and there was a lot of parking. Will definitely come again.
google avatar

Neisha R.

Yelp
Idc I think I've already reviewed them I freaking love the tacos. Crunchy Chicken to be exact. Please don't get me started on that pico and chips. It's fire. I'm going to try the Birria probably today. Moderately priced . Honestly if they get a liquor license it would for sure elevate this spot. I know they are about to be like, damn girl you again See y'all later Ok update y'all! I went andddd yep still bomb. I got three but really was full after 2.
google avatar

Reena S.

Yelp
Things I like: -Large portions -Fast service - to go order took less than 5 min -Great salsa options -Fresh chips -Extensive options Things I don't like: -Smells like strong cleaner in here, almost unappetizing to dine in. -Price points - each entree with rice and beans is $15+ - but this is pretty common now at these taquerias post-covid -Enchiladas use a very Americanized tomato tasting red sauce than what I've had at other authentic places; maybe that is more Tex-Mex?
google avatar

Joselin H.

Yelp
This was one of my go-to spots when I moved to N. Natomas but the quality has gone down for the price. I've tried it a few times and the quality is consistently not worth the price. Meat is scarce even when I order extra meat and light rice, the flavor of the meat is also not great. The restraunt seating is spacious and clean, which makes good for big groups. I work in client care and customer service so I know a thing about working with people, but if you cannot smile at the register, perhaps find a different job.
google avatar

Paige S.

Yelp
I've gotten food here a number of times (always takeout.) The food has always been good in my experience and tonight it seemed extra delicious. We got the taco salad with carne asada (no shell, no rice), a chile relleno, veggie tacos, and melon agua fresca. Everything hit the spot. I highly recommend this spot for Mexican takeout! They have a casual indoor and outdoor eating area too, if you prefer to eat there.
google avatar

Ashley K.

Yelp
Have been here a few times but the most recent trip showed a quality decline. All three of our burritos were cold and poorly wrapped. Mine fell apart after two bites and had very little carne. The other carne burrito was also very salty. Only redeeming factor is their warm chips and salsa bar.
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
Best tacos in Sacramento. Perfectly seasoned meat, spicy and flavorful salsas, and affordable prices at $2.75 per taco! They also have a large dining area for indoor dining and some seating outside too
google avatar

Amelia W.

Yelp
The best Mexican food in natomas. Usually order there and take to go home. super fast service and food is amazing every time
google avatar

Jim P.

Yelp
Still great after all these years! I lived in Natomas twenty years ago, and this was a favorite place to eat. Was in Natomas today and stopped in for dinner. The carnitas Super Burrito that I got was delicious, very big, and had more meat in it than probably any other burrito I've eaten. The chips and salsa were really good, and the service was friendly and fast. It gets my highest recommendation.

Diana S.

Yelp
If you order to go they will give you different meat. Ordered an asada super taco and inside was chicken instead. When I went to pick up my to go order the cashier said the salsa was at the bottom just to find out there was no salsa at all.
google avatar

Sunny K.

Yelp
Their meat has the prefect seasoning. We cater from them for all gatherings whether it's a dinner party or fantasy football party.
google avatar

Dawn B.

Yelp
Today was an off day? Ive eaten here in the past and food was better. Chicken dry, guacamole not freshly made, beans not much flavor. I had the chicken nachos and horchata. Horchata was a pass.
google avatar

Charlene G.

Yelp
4 stars comin' in HOT, just like the salsas from Taqueria Rincon Alteno! I've had this spot bookmarked for the longest time not only because it has such a high star rating, but because they open at the butt crack of dawn (kinda, 9am on a Saturday, LOL). Not many places open that early so because this place does, automatic star right there! Because we have been in quarantine, placing our order online was super easy. Ordering is very specific and you can basically build the items exactly how you want it by adding or removing certain ingredients. But the time my hubby arrived to pick up our take-out order, the food was ready as promised. He said they have a "help yourself" salsa bar that offered many salsa options (peep my picture). The food here is very tasty. Because I couldn't make up my mind on what to eat, I ordered a Carne Asada Super Burrito annnnnnd Quesabirria Tacos, 2 to try + a cup on consume sauce on the side. Okay, so the Birria tacos were good, but could have been filled with more meat, they were a little shy on the fillings. But the consume sauce!? Omg, seriously some of the best I've ever had. Bursting with flavor, period. The super burrito? Delicious and huge. Worth it. Everything was fresh and worth it. There's a reason Taqueria Rincon has such a high Star's rating. This is a good spot, come and try it!
google avatar

Dan G.

Yelp
Place was poppin. Clean establishment. Food was made fresh to eat. My burrito was a breakfast burrito. Every bite was highly satisfying. It was made with fresh, flavorful ingredients. I recommend the sour cream salsa from the salsa bar because it pairs perfectly with this breakfast burrito. I ordered the Horchata. It was a little grainy on the bottom but other than that it was good. Adds a nice sweetness to my breakfast burrito combo. I would eat here again, it is that good.
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
tacos were so good! we got 3 each 3 different meats, all outstanding! prices were good service was great! a lot of settings inside and outside, paid $1:04 extra for the nacho chip bar ? not bad , will definitely go back and recommend!!
google avatar

Marlene T.

Yelp
Overly greasy. It's not often I post short reviews like this. But I don't have much to say. They do have an unlimited chip and salsa bar. But the food, is just not wonderful.
google avatar

Minerva D.

Yelp
Maybe I'm biased because I'm from Southern California, so my taste for tacos are particular, but what we ordered was fine, but definitely not as good as I've had back home. Thinking that it's near the Mexican consulate, I had some faith that this place was somewhat decent. I ordered a Birria chimichanga, and the Birria was dry. The chimichanga also had more rice and beans in it even when I said go light on both. I ordered 2 crispy tacos that ended up not being crispy, at least not like I'm used to. The pastor and the carnitas were okay. Nothing special. Felt like something was missing from both. Also, they're skimpy with the cheese here. Ordered 2 regular tacos. The adobada and the Asada were just okay too. The Asada was lacking flavor. But I do like that there was a lot of meat in all the tacos. What was strange was that there was no salsa with what we ordered. I get it, they charge, but that's just so strange to me when I'm from a place that gives salsa like candy. In fact, the good places are the ones that let you ladle the different salsas yourself, along with scooping up as much lime, cilantro, onions, and radishes as you like. Do I miss tacos from SoCal? I think I do. Was it terrible? No. Will I come back? Probably not. Will I be on the hunt for decent tacos up on sacramento? You bet.
google avatar

Monifa S.

Yelp
This restaurant definitely gives mom and pop vibes. It is very family friendly. It is small but there are 2 tables inside the restaurant and there is a patio outside facing the street. The staff is not that friendly. They were a little cold when ordering. While the food was good, the restaurant is overpriced. I ordered the quesobirria tacos (3) with the sauce (consume), which totaled to $15.99. After paying I looked over the menu and saw that I could have gotten a super burrito for the price I paid for those tacos. Nonetheless, for me to be spending almost $20, chips are not included. They cost $1 extra. I personally did not like that and it turned me off as a customer. I was disappointed! Overall, the tacos were good but the customer service could be better and providing chips with a meal at no cost for customers would be great.
google avatar

Selene S.

Yelp
The food here is good, we really like the salsa options. My favorite dish has been the Mojarra Frita. Our go to for Mexican food in Natomas

Christine H.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food with lots of flavor and the presentation was well done! This is a do-over.

Jefferson S.

Yelp
Not clean , serving things off the floor .literally .needs to sanitize items before using it
google avatar

Cheryl T.

Yelp
Very clean inside, as well as the restrooms. However, this restaurant is more of a fast food grill rather than a "restaurant." We ordered an enchilada plate but I've not ever tasted a red sauce that was sweet. The place must have pre-played rice and beans and then they add the entree. I say that because the food came faster than I could get salsa! Don't waste your time because the prices are expensive considering the taste!
