Where to Eat in Wheaton, Maryland | Eater DC

"Some of Oaxaca’s best dishes, including moles and signatures like chile rellenos or chile poblano, arrive hot and fresh at this colorful new restaurant in Wheaton. Taqueria Sabor Mixteco also delivers on exceptional service and lively music, making it feel as if you’ve been transported south of the border." - Tim Ebner

Stopped by for dinner here. The atmosphere is quaint and the service was very prompt. The drinks were also good. However, we were underwhelmed by the food. To be clear, it wasn't horrible. I ordered a variety of tacos and my wife had the mole. The tacos were fine, but nothing remarkable. The mole was similarly fine, but not a stand out. It's possible we ordered the wrong things but from what I could tell these were staple dishes at this place. In all fairness, we're spoiled former Californians who have frequented many, many tacquerias and taco trucks. For this area maybe this is the best place around, I don't know.

Beyond anything we could have expected. Everyone was so warm inviting and knowledgeable about everything. The service was above and beyond. The food was so amazing my friend couldn't stop crying he was have an visceral reaction ro how great it was! This place is a must of you are looking for authentic Mexican food. Or just great food period.

Stopped in on a whim for the first time yesterday. We chose to eat here based on reviews and were not disappointed! Service was excellent and attentive. All the meats were so incredibly tender and juicy. One of the best lengua tacos I’ve had in the area. Nachos with carne asada were a hit. Enchiladas Verdes were very tasty with a tiny kick. Definitely recommend, & will be back.

Traditional Mexican dishes, with a focus on Oaxacan specialties. I thought everything we got here was quite delicious. I found the staff to be exceptionally engaging, which enhanced the overall dining experience. They were not only friendly but also incredibly helpful in sharing how Mexicans traditionally enjoy their food. Their recommendations on which sauces to pair with different dishes elevated the flavors even further. The artwork on the walls was really cool, adding a vibrant and cultural touch to the space. If you're looking for a place that serves authentic Mexican food with a welcoming atmosphere this is a great choice.

Everything was cool & then the service went downhill when we asked the server to split our checks. My husband & I on one check, my sister on her own being that she was in town for work & needed the receipt. The guys whole demeanor changed, and he got the nastiest attitude & started telling us about some extra fees they have to pay from splitting checks. This is one of the most normal occurrences in the restaurant industry. Definitely put a bad taste in our mouths & we probably won't be back. The food was ok, nice sized portions, but nothing special flavorwise & when I asked them for a little cup of lime slices, he gave me 2 little tiny dry pieces of lime & had an attitude whilst giving them too me. If it's that serious, charge extra for your precious limes, then maybe we can actually get some with some juice in them.

It was a religious experience…. Juan and all of the savory and pastry chefs here are artists. You taste the love and artistic expression in the food- The mole was everything!!! So delicate, a touch of sweet - it brought me back home to my abuelitas kitchen. Just set aside any expectations you have and run to have lunch- dinner here. This place will transport you to Oaxaca and maybe beyond! Nos vemos pronto Juan!

The food was very very delicious! It wasn’t TexMex It wasn’t Salvadoran/Mexican. It was authentic Mexican food the kind you eat in Mexico! Being Mexican I know what Mexican food should be.

Stopped here in Wheaton for dinner on my evening bike ride! OMG the tamarind agua fresca was cold, delicious, and refreshing!! Best tamarind juice I've ever had. Lengua and al pastor tacos were on point as well. Fast, friendly, and polite service. Appreciated the joke about parking my bike wrong hahaha. Definitely coming back and would recommend.

Yelp
I stopped by two weeks ago on a freezing cold and rainy Thursday night. I was happy to be immediately greeted and seated. I've heard so many good reviews about this restaurant and was really excited to finally try it. The place is small inside and no frills but cozy. To start we ordered a mango margarita and a mezcal pineapple-peach margarita. Both good and pretty straight forward. For our appetizer, we got the queso fundido with chorizo to share. It comes with tortillas. It was very good. For our entrees, we got the carne enchilada and the chileajo mixteco. Delicious! The chileajo mixteco came with pork and creamy thick sauce, potatoes, and rice and beans. It looked so great the table next to us immediately asked what it was. The carne enchilada was sizzling, the pork tender, the vegetables perfectly grilled. Our server was attentive and nice. Service was quick and prompt. Overall, we had a really good experience I plan to go back often. I definitely recommend them for anyone looking for great Mexican food.

Yelp
It is often difficult to find good Mexican food in the DC area. Some places are delicious but expensive and bougie. Others are Salvadoran places that happen to offer pretty mid tacos and burritos. Taqueria Sabor Mixteco is a rare gem: Delicious, unpretentious and actually owned and operated by folks from Mexico, specifically Oaxaca. The service was a little slow when we went, but staff were extremely gracious and they were clearly overwhelmed by a huge surge in customers. I'm glad word is getting out about how good this place is -- More customers means more likely to stay open. The overwhelm did not impact the quality of the food at all. We split a tlayuda for an appetizer. I hadn't had one before and didn't know what to expect. It was delicious and I will definitely get it again next visit. I had the chicken enchiladas with mole and they were delicious. The mole was a little sweeter than what I've had elsewhere -- Apparently this is the Oaxacan variation. My spouse got alambre with chorizo, which I liked even more. I am a bit of a fiend for melted cheese, though. The prices are extremely reasonable, staff is friendly and the flavor is amazing. I cannot recommend this place highly enough.

Yelp
Amazing service! We went tonight and had a wonderful server who gave us great recommendations and made our experience feel special. The food was absolutely amazing and the atmosphere was pleasant with warm decor and good music. We were also pleasantly surprised that they do serve beer and cocktails which we didn't see on the website.

Yelp
My son and I are here a couple weeks ago -- and are still talking about how delicious the food is at the gem of a restaurant tucked away in Wheaton. Everything is made fresh -- even the hot sauce. If you want fresh, light, flavorful tacos, this is the place.

Yelp
The service and tacos and enchiladas were excellent. They offer an array of agua frescas that are delicious.

Yelp
Now on our list of favorites in the DMV area and well worth our 45 minute drive to get there (although it's close to the Wheaton Metro station). We thoroughly enjoyed our introduction to Taqueria Sabor Mixteco after reading a review in the Washington Post. No shortcuts in the food prep here, it's obvious that traditional methods are followed, including the beans and salsas. Far above standard taqueria fare. Apolinar Cervantes was a delightful host.
