"Some of Oaxaca’s best dishes, including moles and signatures like chile rellenos or chile poblano, arrive hot and fresh at this colorful new restaurant in Wheaton. Taqueria Sabor Mixteco also delivers on exceptional service and lively music, making it feel as if you’ve been transported south of the border." - Tim Ebner

Great local addition, and some of the most delicious and more authentic Mexican food we have found in the DMV. Very friendly staff, courteous and helpful, wonderful overall atmosphere in a very casual Wheaton dining spot. We loved everything we tried pretty much: Guacamole (Avocado, onion, jalapeño, tomato, cilantro served with chips) - very fresh and flavorful, and while it could have been a little chunkier, that's just a preference Queso Fundido (Melted Jack cheese, Queso Oaxaca, jalapeño peppers, cilantro and served with corn tortillas) - we added chorizo and it was one of the best versions I have had of this ever. The chorizo was rich and delicious, and the queso itself was so yummy you could just eat it on its own with a spoon. Tlayudas (Pork lard, refried beans, cabbage, lettuce, tomato, avocado and cheese) - again added some of that delicious chorizo and it was an amazing dish. Never had this before, but highly recommended you give it a try. Enough for 3-4 people to share as an app or for one to enjoy it as an entree Enchiladas De Mole (Three traditional mole enchiladas stuffed with chicked served with rice, beans, queso fresco, and radishes) - my wife loved her enchiladas, and the mole was out of this world. Super smokey with the right amount of sweetness and bitterness. My daughter loved her custom bean, cheese, sour cream and guacamole burrito, one of her favorites ever she said. The beans were perfectly done. We tried a couple of tacos too: Al Pastor (Taco filled with marinated pork in adobo and pineapple) - perfection, right out of Mexico City. Suadero (Taco filled with braised beef) - probably the only lowlight for me, just not a fan, tasted a bit too fatty and mild. Phenomenal meal. Can't wait to return or potentially order in again soon!

I have found the perfect authentic Mexican restaurant. The quesdo fundido with chorizo, fantastic. Great cheese pull and delicious. The tacos saudero were yummy and melts in your mouth. Green enchiladas were tasty, tortillas were a bit thin but were good with the enchiladas. Now, onto the Mole Mixteca. The sauce. The sauce! Delicious, flavorful, slightly chocolatey, nutty, a touch of spicy heat finish at the end. Chicken is fork tender and the rice/beans are good too.

I was most impressed with their Oaxacan specialities. They were definitely the highlight. The service was excellent. One person came out and explained the entire menu. That was unexpected but very helpful.

Taqueria Sabor Mixteco is a hidden gem! As Arizona natives, we've been missing authentic Mexican food since moving here, and this place finally satisfied that craving! The chicken mole enchiladas are absolutely delicious, and the suadero taco quickly became our favorite—perfectly tender and flavorful. We also tried the carne asada and chicken tacos, which were equally amazing. Don’t skip the guacamole—it’s a must! They have an incredible selection of fresh salads too. The service was top-notch; our server was incredibly sweet and attentive, making the whole experience even better. Plus, the prices are affordable, and the lively atmosphere is clean and welcoming. We can't wait to come back!

Thanks to the amazing review in the Washington post we found this cute restaurant near us. Really good, fresh and authentic food. Super nice service and a relaxed atmosphere. We ate ALL the tacos and we’ll be back to try the other delicious foods. Don’t forget to try their most delicious flan!

What a treat, just finished a delicious meal Review by the Washington Post food critic. On July 21, 2024… we plan on going back on regular basis. I had the Tlayludas, hard shell folded, Excellent. The wife had a chicken burrito that was huge. And the coffee was excellent, anyway I highly recommend you visit and enjoy! Check out our pictures…

Had some of the best tacos I’ve had in a while, along with a refreshing non-alcoholic mango daiquiri. I especially liked the chorizo taco. The servers were helpful and friendly. Hoping to come back soon when they get their liquor license for more tacos and a margarita!

Staff and owner are so friendly. Restaurant is 6 months old but food here is so good. I got the chorizo, Lengua and beef tacos. Made fresh and great in value

Yelp
I stopped by two weeks ago on a freezing cold and rainy Thursday night. I was happy to be immediately greeted and seated. I've heard so many good reviews about this restaurant and was really excited to finally try it. The place is small inside and no frills but cozy. To start we ordered a mango margarita and a mezcal pineapple-peach margarita. Both good and pretty straight forward. For our appetizer, we got the queso fundido with chorizo to share. It comes with tortillas. It was very good. For our entrees, we got the carne enchilada and the chileajo mixteco. Delicious! The chileajo mixteco came with pork and creamy thick sauce, potatoes, and rice and beans. It looked so great the table next to us immediately asked what it was. The carne enchilada was sizzling, the pork tender, the vegetables perfectly grilled. Our server was attentive and nice. Service was quick and prompt. Overall, we had a really good experience I plan to go back often. I definitely recommend them for anyone looking for great Mexican food.

Yelp
It is often difficult to find good Mexican food in the DC area. Some places are delicious but expensive and bougie. Others are Salvadoran places that happen to offer pretty mid tacos and burritos. Taqueria Sabor Mixteco is a rare gem: Delicious, unpretentious and actually owned and operated by folks from Mexico, specifically Oaxaca. The service was a little slow when we went, but staff were extremely gracious and they were clearly overwhelmed by a huge surge in customers. I'm glad word is getting out about how good this place is -- More customers means more likely to stay open. The overwhelm did not impact the quality of the food at all. We split a tlayuda for an appetizer. I hadn't had one before and didn't know what to expect. It was delicious and I will definitely get it again next visit. I had the chicken enchiladas with mole and they were delicious. The mole was a little sweeter than what I've had elsewhere -- Apparently this is the Oaxacan variation. My spouse got alambre with chorizo, which I liked even more. I am a bit of a fiend for melted cheese, though. The prices are extremely reasonable, staff is friendly and the flavor is amazing. I cannot recommend this place highly enough.

Yelp
Amazing service! We went tonight and had a wonderful server who gave us great recommendations and made our experience feel special. The food was absolutely amazing and the atmosphere was pleasant with warm decor and good music. We were also pleasantly surprised that they do serve beer and cocktails which we didn't see on the website.

Yelp
My son and I are here a couple weeks ago -- and are still talking about how delicious the food is at the gem of a restaurant tucked away in Wheaton. Everything is made fresh -- even the hot sauce. If you want fresh, light, flavorful tacos, this is the place.

Yelp
The service and tacos and enchiladas were excellent. They offer an array of agua frescas that are delicious.

Yelp
Now on our list of favorites in the DMV area and well worth our 45 minute drive to get there (although it's close to the Wheaton Metro station). We thoroughly enjoyed our introduction to Taqueria Sabor Mixteco after reading a review in the Washington Post. No shortcuts in the food prep here, it's obvious that traditional methods are followed, including the beans and salsas. Far above standard taqueria fare. Apolinar Cervantes was a delightful host.
