Taqueria San Juanito - Review - Albany Park - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Make a sharp left after getting off the Kedzie Brown Line and you’ll see Taqueria San Juanito. And like many of the taquerias in Albany Park, it’s a solid place to visit when tacos have infiltrated your thoughts. Plus, with lots of space and one large table that can fit up to 12 people, it’s great for a group. They have a large selection of tacos, from carne asada to crispy tripa. But one of the best things here is the scarlet-tinged ahogada—the sandwich is incredibly flavorful from the bread soaked in zesty chile de arbol sauce. Just make sure to have a solid stack of napkins at the ready—you’ll need it." - John Ringor

Grown up eating from here and never got to make a review; now it is time. Friendly staff who always accommodated my non-Spanish speaking family. The BEST tasting dishes of all varieties. Gorgeous plating and HUGE serving sides, perfect to take home and eat for the next few days. And cheap prices for what is being served to us! I will always eat here when I’m home and am scared of trying new places due to how great the food is at San Juanito’s.

Google
Great service. Great food Great atmosphere. The tacos de camera are the best in town.

Google
Place takes up to an hour to get the food ready I meet a guy too that was getting angry 😡 at the time I arrived I didn’t know why he was angry but one hour later I realized why also try asking them they ignore you. Also what’s up with the plastic melting on my burrito 🌯 I feel that this is unhealthy might need to contact the city health department about this.

Our favorite neighborhood Mexican Restaurant! We celebrate our special days here, go here casually and professionally, and I brought my students here to enjoy their food! Family, friends, and colleagues alike will love it! Mine do! Going to go for breakfast right now!🫶🏾🙌🏾💪🏾😂 On weekends a lady makes homemade tortillas in the larger room and often musicians visit ( please tip them because that is a great gift). Please tip the servers as well because they are hard workers and great service! Love San Juanitos! We’re regulars!

Google
Got the ranchera super torta that was exactly as described a SUPER torta. It was huge I ate half of it and the rest the next day. You can share it. The ranchera has a little bit of everything asada, Al pastor and chorizo. The service was good. All the staff was super friendly and quick to take our order. We needed more time but they still checked on us multiple times. When we were finally ready Janet answered all our questions. The red salsa was really good if you like spicy. Green didn’t really have much flavor or heat but it was okay. The pico de gallo or salsa not sure was good too. We got 2 rounds of chips. The agua de jamaica was not that sweet which was perfect. They asked us if we wanted ice or not which not a lot of places ask they just assume. Overall, our experience was great. Service was good. Atmosphere was cute - they have it decorated nice and the front window is open. They also have outside seats. They seemed really busy. Parking is street parking pay to park. Definitely give it a try. We went because passing by it smelled good.

Beautiful place dressed for Christmas, love that they get festive. Food is always delish! I think their best taco is the Al Pastor😋😋

Google
Wonderful place, delicious food, great prices, and good service Tacos are delicious, but my favorite dish is Tampiqueña... I love it

Google
Food is good I think is just the thing that I had was too much pork and cheese for me which is totally my fault, it’s literally called choriqueso, I would recommend to share it as an apt. The service could be better. The portions were huge btw and it was very affordable. I’ll definitely revisit to try other stuff too.

Yelp
My husband and I dined in tonight and the food and service was excellent. We ordered a pambazo chorizo con papas, Cuban super torta, quesorizo and two large horchatas. This is some of the best Mexican food we had and the cooks did a wonderful job! The inside was super clean and spacious.

Yelp
They took 40mins for our food, but the rest of the tables were getting their food even if they arrive after us. When we told the server they said "they had online orders that they were working on" very disappointed. Shouldn't they prioritize in house orders first? Rude server

Yelp
Everything was great about this place. Cozy & inviting with tasty dishes. The only thing that could've made it better was a liquor menu, but I can always bring a flask next week ;)

Yelp
Albany Park is a favorite area for ethnic food for me. Just walk a little bit and you'll come across Pupusas, middle eastern food, donuts, Filipino, Mexican, Brazilian, Chinese, brunch, etc. There's such a wide variety of places to eat and Taqueria San Juanito has become an instant go-to for a home cooked Mexican meal. I really admire this place, the first time, they were filled to capacity, and we could not get a table. The place was packed with all Mexican families - that's when you know it's the real deal. There was a live singer with a guitar, singing Mexican country songs, table side. I think he was lamenting about missing home. At least that's the feelin I had, namean?? It's byob, the art is Tasteful and the food is excellent. The Chile relleno, carne asada and chicken tacos were excellent. Much to my dismay, they don't offer lengua tacos. I liked my pambazo spicy sandwich and the giant steak quesadilla was Muy fantastico!! The service was very accommodating in breaking down the menu for us. It's street pahking folks and they fill up fast on the weekend. So hop to it amigos y amigas!!

Yelp
Un Platillo Campeón !! ... .... el primer platillo que pruebo aquí y muy delicioso , la salsa de los chilaquiles verdes muy sabrosa y picante lo suficiente para que sigan siendo "chilaquiles", los recomiendo !

Yelp
service is really good and food comes out at a pretty quick time which is the highlights here! recommend if u want to grab a fast bite! food is just good and nothing too extraordinary. got the al pastor torta and asada torta which both their seasonings are not the best ive ever had. the verde chilaquiles were yummy tho!

Yelp
The good: The gorditas de rajas were delicious 10/10. The bad: We waited almost an hour to get our food.

Yelp
Great taco spot if you're looking for authentic Mexican food. I ordered the 3 taco dinner and got carne asada, al pastor, and chorizo. All of the tacos were extremely flavorful. It also has great horchata, super refreshing! Service can sometimes take a while but the food is worth the wait.

Yelp
Update : Place is still amazing. They had redecorated the interior and the restaurant looks more modern. Even though I missed the previous style, the food is still delicious and the servers are kind and attentive. One of my comfort restaurants.

Sandra C.

Yelp
I called a couple of times to place an order but it seemed that the phone was disconnected. Came to the restaurant and asked the servers if their phone was in service, one of the servers stated that they disconnect the phone when they are busy. There were plenty of empty tables and many servers just walking around. I have seen this restaurant busy before today was not busy. This place needs better management.

Yelp
Called ahead to order 2 burritos. Had me waiting over 30 minutes and didn't tell me why

Totally recommend this place 10/10 stars for me.

Yelp
Best tacos in the neighborhood! Service is good, and I often call ahead for to-go orders. I usually don't have to wait too long unless it's peak hours.

Yelp
They have pretty good gorditas, sopes, and tacos. But a terrible salad. I ordered a salad and asked them for cucumber on it but they said they don't put cucumber. Only lettuce pineapple radish chicken and onion, per the staff. I asked them not to put pineapple, but when I got home and gave the salad to the person who asked me to get it for them, it had pineapple and some orange slices. Darn it! I really want to like this place. I hope they don't do this to me again if I order for pickup. I'll check my food next time.

Yelp
I was walking towards a near by restaurant, when I seen a woman through the window making handmade tortillas and I thought, "Mexican!" For weeks I had this restaurant in mind but could not find the time, until now. I had the Mexican steak(TAMPIQUEŃA). A generous, juicy-piece of steak, cooked to perfection. Food was very good, although I recommend going earlier. There's something different about food made with love. Will be coming back to try out a few other menu items. Until next-time!

Yelp
Delicious, authentic choices. I go with my Mexican in-laws often because they absolutely love it, so that is as high praise as possible. The service is great, friendly and attentive!

Yelp
Love their food! My family are regulars and I also bring my students here! Great BYOB as well!

Yelp
First couple of times I ordered from here, I was impressed. The pork torta and steak burrito were both really flavorful. The three taco dinner was on point with lots of extra meat and the rice & beans were delicious. I figured it would become a regular place I could order from. The last time I ordered from here, it seemed totally off. The torta seemed like it was painted on the outside with tomato paste and the grease was all over the wrapping. The burrito seemed a lot smaller and less filled with stuff, and the rice & beans did not hit the mark. Not sure what happened, but I probably will look elsewhere for a delivery place.

Yelp
Great place to go would so recommend My favorite item on the menu is the Taco Chorizo Taco so much flavor in one bite all the ingredients match up so well. The waiters are nice and patient I felt very welcome there, it's a perfect place to go with your family. The overall setting looked great the art was so unique and the vibe/atmosphere was great overall.

Yelp
Giving 2 stars because my order was correct and bread was nice and fresh however the carne asada was cut up so small i felt like I was eating ground beef. So cheap.

Anna R.

Yelp
I've been dining at this restaurant for a long time with my family and I realized I never left a review!! All employees are super welcoming and the service is so fast. Sundays get really busy so be prepared to wait a little but like I said, the employees are super quick with seating you despite busy times. Ambiance is super homely and the food is amazing! Truly authentic Mexican restaurant! Nobody beats their tacos by the way:)

Yelp
My love and I were having a nice stroll around town when we wanted to try someplace new for dinner. We wound up at Taqueria San Juanito, and we were very pleased with our dining experience. Located close to the Kedzie Brown Line stop, this restaurant has two seating areas. The one on the left when you enter looks more like a banquet room, while the one on the right seemed to be favored by regular diners. Perhaps this is because this dining area has charming tiled tables and heavy wood chairs with carved seat backs, though many of the seats seem to be jammed together. Our table number 6 alongside the window seemed to be a good spot to enjoy our dinner. Free tortilla chips and salsa were served, but I was distracted by all of the interesting choices on the menu. We also enjoyed eyeballing what other folks were ordering for dinner. My love enjoyed her taco dinner with lengua. I went crazy and ordered what was effectively two lunches for dinner. The pambazo with chorizo and potato filling was a very unique and quite tasty sandwich. Apparently the bread roll is drenched in chile sauce and then griddled, so the sandwich stays crispy throughout the meal. The chorizo filling is good, but boy the exterior of the roll is super messy so try to eat it with knife and fork. I also ordered a gordita with chicken tinga, and this seemed slightly spicier than the pambazo (which really did not seem spicy at all). Everything was yummy, and somehow I managed to finish both of my "lunch" selections. The small horchata I ordered was ok. To top off our evening, a singer-guitarist serenaded the crowd in Espanol for a bit. Some items on the menu appear pricier than average, and some (like the pambazo) seem like a really good deal. Although other Mexican restaurants are closer to our home, we may have to make an excursion to dine at Taqueria San Juanito again.

Yelp
A few people recommended this place because I love Mexican food. I'm also from California where Mexican food reigns. That said, I'll admit it can be hard to review Mexican establishments outside of California in terms of authentic taste, flavors, and seasonings without comparison, however, I do try to remain objective. It goes without saying Californian Mexican food is prepared and influenced from the northern part of Mexico, whereas Mexican food/restaurants in the Midwest, in general, tend to be heavily influenced from the central part of Mexico. This place, however fell short altogether. It wasn't because I didn't care for the seasoning and flavors, it had more to do with the preparation. I ordered the flautas, which to some is a standard dish to make. Flautas are similar to taquitos which is meat rolled tightly in a corn tortilla and then deep fried. Flautas consist of meat loosely rolled with flour tortillas and then deep fried. I took a bite of the flautas and tasted nothing but the oil they were fried in. The rice was gummy rather than fluffy. The only thing I could really eat were the beans but who wants to pay $10.00 for a plate of beans. Perhaps I caught them on an off day but the way the other plates were being served it seems to be the standard.

Yelp
Recommended by a fellow co-worker. My review then is based on menu options, flavors, portions and prices. The menu offers a variety of meat options. I ordered 4 tacos: Al Pastor, Lengua (beef tongue), Tripa Dorada (tripe fried hard), Chicharron (Pork Rind in green sauce). I was looking for the "Trompo" rotisserie for the Al Pastor, did not see it. I was bit disappointed in that. It made me think of I had the Al Pastor version from the flat top grill. My Al Pastor was a bit on the dry side and lacking a bit of the pinnacle flavor that I was expecting. Tripa was on the fried hard side, the way I like it. The Lengua was sliced in strips. It usually comes cubes but that did not bother me. The Chicharrón was good as well. Every taco was short on onion and cilantro except for the Chicharrón taco. I would have liked it if it was more evenly spread across al 4 tacos. The tongue was nice and tender. They gave me 3 salsas: green, green (avocado/Serrano?), red (stole the show and boosted) flavor. If I was rating just on flavor, San Juanito would rate a 3 star just for the tacos. They do have an extensive menu so I'm sure it offers much more. The portions were good and each taco was doubled up on tortilla as they should be. The price alone for 4 tacos, you can't beat it. $2.10 per taco. My total was still under $10 bucks! That's pretty darn good! The price boosts my rating to 4 stars. If you're in the area, do check it out for lunch. Definitely recommend it. It's easily located off of Lawrence and Kedzie, not far from the Brown line stop for all those commuters.

Yelp
Nice place to get tacos. Stop by if it's convenient but I wouldn't go out of my way to get this. Overall: 3.9/5 Value: 4/5. $2 per taco. Tacos are not small either, so 3 tacos is a very filling lunch for $6. Atmosphere: 4/5. Actually the restaurant is very nice. It has a quiet hustle/bustle with big tables and lots of space for you to sit. Speed: 3/5. It took about 15 minutes for the tacos to come. I'm glad that everything is made fresh but it is definitely not fast. Taste: 4/5. The al pastor pork tacos were really good. The chorizo taco was ok. The chicken tacos were not very good. Good amount of meat is given in the taco. Not a ton of sauce is on the taco but it tastes pretty authentic (as far as I can tell). Solid tacos though--I'd get more al pastor or try some of their other options next time.

Yelp
Don't let the chaos inside put you off. Selections are plenty and tasty! On busy days, it can be topsy turvy and smokey but your bellies will be filled with flavor-packed dishes. I've avoided Mexican cuisine for so long, did not like the smell of black chili. How limited was my awareness and knowledge of the cuisine then! If you are like me well stir away from tacos and burritos, find a local Mexplace in your neighborhood and try the other comidas offeredl.

William M.

Yelp
I've been going here consistently for the last few years, never have they ever messed up my order, the staff are always friendly, I recommend you get the taco dinner all 3 tacos al pastor (dare I say some of the best al pastor in the city!) and if you eat a little more order a extra taco with your taco dinner they will gladly put it together on a plate. The atmosphere of the place is great, you'll see good decoration, paintings here and there.

Eliza C.

Yelp
Food came suuuuper fast and tacos were really yummy! We had tacos de Al Pastor, Asada, Cecina, Tripas and Cabeza. Tripas and Cabeza are pretty rare at everyday taquerias so this was a treat for my dad. He had Jamaica and my son and I had Horchata. My dad said the Jamaica was great, I'd for sure skip the Horchata. I was disappointed they didn't have Lengua, maybe next time. Prices were fair, parking was rough on this Sunday afternoon. We will definitely return! Excited to try new menu items! Service was very attentive but not intrusive and I appreciated that! They also had a duo of a guitarist and singer hanging around if anyone wanted a song or two. Nice touch!

Yelp
Craving Mexican? The best in the city if you aren't looking for fine dining. Flavor point on! All is point on! My fave!

Illegirl_ 9.

Yelp
Food is decent but portions are a bit small :/ the service is amazing and ambience feels homey when you walk in!

Wendy Z.

Yelp
horrible service waitress with blue hair had a sh*tty attitud! everything I asked for they didn't have, I asked for orange juice and they didnt have nothing. I asked for enchiladas suizas (green) and they gave me red enchiladas with cheese and weird chicken?? it was horrible! chicken didn't taste like chicken and food was tasteless!! save your money

Honest T.

Yelp
The food is good it was a bit overpriced for the small portions. A veggie torta with French fries cost $12.13. The French fries were frozen with no salt, they also gave me a small portion. The torta was good but it was very small, which was disappointing since it cost about 8 dollars. The inside of the restaurant is beautiful the service was fast (pick up). They had a lot of people I side which is a good sign but I just feel like the side portions could be bigger and use a little more seasoning.
google avatar

Oscar H.

Yelp
Not many taquerias offer Panbazos on the north side, but San Juanito does. Sandwich was big and filled Generously with Steak! I will return to try "chorizo and potato" one in the future!
google avatar

Yelp
Consistent good food at a great price. I have been going weekly for years. Everything is good try it all!

Yelp
Amazing amazing taqueria!! The pico de gallo alone would keep me running back for more. The guac & chips were a delight as well. And the Pechuga Asada con Nopales (chicken + cactus) was super fun and special. This translated perfectly as takeout food during coronavirus. All the flavors were so specially curated. I'm still thinking about them days later. Can't wait to go back!

Cassidy B.

Yelp
Seriously some of the best tacos I've ever had. Get the pastor tacos! They're fantastic.

Stella P.

Yelp
my local place really good always bussin bro why do i have 2 say so much its good thats it

Patrick C.

Yelp
Steak is actually just trimmings and the meat is greyish brown and soggy, they also do not give you salsa verde and limes with the tacos which any self respecting mexican place would, however in this instance it would be the one thing that covers up the bland muck they serve you on a torilla, I looked at the tacos they gave me and lost my appetite
google avatar

Andrea G.

Yelp
Without a doubt, one of the best around! I feel like they are cooking just for me! Everything so good! Great tacos, amazing poblano queso sope, great "nachos". Love this place! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Sammi E.

Yelp
A wide variety of delicious and cheap tacos close to the train? Count me in! 20 tacos for $30, seriously?!? $5 for a giant burrito? Yes sir! The chorizo was EXCELLENT!!! So much flavor packed into the meat. Definitely the best chorizo taco I have had in Chicago. The chicharon taco is smothered in awesome green sauce. If you dine in you also get chips with three sauces!
google avatar

Yelp
On my ever lasting hunt for good Tacos I ended up at this place. I've been on yelp for about a year but have been actively yelping for about 7 months. The main reason I stopped here was because of the good yelp reviews but oh my lord was I deceived. It was about 1 pm on a Friday and this place was pretty much dead. The server saw me walk in but just looked at me. There were no directions to either seat myself or wait to be seated; so I seated myself. My server came within a few minutes and took my order. 3 steak tacos with lettuce, tomato, cilantro and cheese and also a large horchata. My horchata came first and I was ready to gulp that sucker down but it was spicy. WHY WAS IT SPICY??? I asked many of my friends and they told me that Horchata is not spicy! My tacos were disgusting. Not seasoned and just sort of thrown together. i see all these great Yelp review but i do not know where and how! I was very disappointed and i will not return. If the service was more active and up to standard then maybe this review would have been a bit different but service was as terrible as their food. No Thank You

Yelp
Hola! I saw this restaurant featured on Chicago's Best show last week and decided to take a ride from the far south side to the far north side to check it out. Luckily, it was Sunday, so I had no trouble parking on the street (for free, yay!!!), but for what it cost in gas I could have gotten a great meal from any number of South side Mexican restaurants. That being said, it was average. I had guacomole to start. It was pretty much just mashed avocado. No onion, lime, garlic...kinda bland except for the salt I put on. Chicago's Best featured a "Super Torta" called a Cubano. It sounded interesting, but I didn't want hot dogs on my torta. I settled on a Michoacana, which is Carne asada, ham, chorizo, beans, lettuce, tomato and sour cream on a toasted super size torta bun. Large size for sure. The asada was chopped into tiny pieces, as the chorizo is, and the tomatoes too. That caused alot to fall out as I picked it up. The chorizo was borderline burnt, but had flavor. The couple of pieces of ham were very thin and looked more like bologna..couldn't even taste it. The beans I noticed only on one side of the bun. I guess overall it was just "ok". Larger slices of Carne asada would make it easier to eat, but I wouldn't make the drive that far to go here again. The staff was buzzing around, very helpful and friendly. Parking on a regular day on Kedzie would probably be a challenge, I even drove around the block to check it out. Restaurant was clean, bathroom too. Decor was typical. Drove back via Lake Shore Drive, on a beautiful day.

Yelp
That place is busy on a Sunday night!! Hubby's cousin just got off the bus and appeared to be hungry, so we went there based on the stellar yelp reviews they've received. The service was friendly. I ordered caldo de cameron like my usual route at a Mexican joint. It was portioned adequately, which I like it because I hate to experience Mexican food coma but food is always tasty. Not to mention that the shrimps are gigantic!! The hubby said the pastor gordita was good even though he still favors the gorditas at a different Mexican neighborhood restaurant. The starter salsa and chips were on point. They did forget our orders of horchata and Jamaica but we were able to grabbed one of the servers and there was enough remedy for this minor glitch. In the end, they didn't charge us the drinks we ordered and continue to apologize for the mistake. Honestly, it didn't bother us at all because the entire experience was enjoyable. The restroom offered a baby-changing station. It was very thoughtful of them to provide this for the convenience of moms with infants. P.S. The definition of Mexican food coma: due to the generosity of my fellow Mexican friends and families, overly large portions of food can cause a temporary incapacity to do anything because a petite, 95 lb Asian girl can't handle it all at once.
google avatar

Maria O.

Yelp
The service was great and fast. Also very well lit and with cute decorations (even in the bathrooms). The food itself is also good and they have homemade sauces which are also different in flavor but very tasty! This place gives you incredible portions for just $5. I guarantee if you come here you won't be disappointed. Our waitress was very kind and attentive and the staff in general were great! The ambiance of the place gives you a sense of comfort away from home.

Yelp
One of my go to Mexican restaurants around my area. Great food, great service, great prices. I love their pozole and menudo. Tacos are always very flavorful and loaded with ingredients. Their cabeza tacos are delicious.

Pete F.

Yelp
My favorite place for chilaquiles. Their green salsa is incredible. Homemade tortillas, tasty pastor.

Yelp
I think I've been to most of the Mexican restaurants in Albany Park, and this is my favorite. A huge burrito for $4-7, and every meal is served with unlimited chips with three different salsas. The cheese/ham/pineapple quesadilla is really great too. Service and atmosphere is very predictable and comparable to other little places in the neighborhood, but the food is much better than average. Note that they have a $10 minimum for using cards.

Yelp
First time ordering food from here.My Uncle raves about this place & let me tell u he knows good food. So we ordered a variety of tacos ( pastor, carne asada & lomo) all street style. All on point. The pastor had that nice char & tang. The lomo was juicy & just the right amount of peppers/onions. The asada was seasoned & cooked perfectly. Their tortillas were fire (have to find out if they are housemade). I highly recommend this spot. Next time I am trying their breakfast.

Yelp
Favorite Mexican place in the north side! Food is always good & fresh. Try the al pastor "pork" gorditas. To die for, aside the great quality. The price range is very affordable. Dinner for two may range from 15-25. Very reasonable!
