The Best Mexican Food in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"For Mexican on the West Bank, look no further than Taqueria Sanchez, a tiny, bright roadhouse that greets diners as they hit Gretna. The green salsa is the key here, and don’t miss the hangover-soothing menudo or tortas, both standouts on the vast, affordable menu. There’s a no frills location in Kenner too." - Beth D’Addono

Google
Great place to go gran hispanic food on the go. Didn't wait too long for my food. It was delicious and super flavorful. Their tacos are bomb. Really enjoyed the carne asada plate and the burrito. Had a great lunch experience.

Google
I did not want to eat here after I walked in, but I was with a coworker, and she was ready to leave right away, but neither one of us knew it so we wasted our $$$. This place was not sanitary, looked like somebody’s garage, and is NOT a safe place to eat. The staff does not speak English but my Spanish is good enough to order, say thank you and hold a conversation. Got my food and immediately said no. So if you’re considering this for lunch or dinner - save your money. There is no atmosphere or sanitary conditions and certainly the food is too $$$$.

Heidy C.

Google
It was just okay. The place looks kind of dirty and the place also has a funky smell. But the people where really nice. The menu is expensive. I just didn't like the food too much.

Leah M.

Google
I'm a Cali transplant, and this is as close to as it gets with the food here. It's one of the best places to have tacos 🌮

Mike C.

Google
This is a little roadside stand on the Westbank Expressway. Not a sit down restaurant. There are a couple of seats and a counter to eat at if you're in a hurry. Maybe 10 things on the handwritten menu taped to the glass. THE FOOD: I just tried a couple of carne asada tacos. Came with a lime wedge and salsa verde. I gotta say, lots of flavor in the meat. Delicious char flavor. The salsa was also awesome. Heat, savory, great. $5.00 for the tacos. THIS is a great little quick eats place. Gonna try some other menu items next time!

Google
Food looked delicious, the flavor didn't back it up. The desebrada tacos were a bit tough. The barbacoa tacos were good but extremely wet that by the time they got to me, the tortilla didn't hold together anymore. Lastly, the Gordita.. I wanted it to be good so bad. It was a mess. I appreciated the fresh tortilla but the chicharron wasn't chicharron, it was just gooey fat bits. Oh, the horchata was WAY too sweet and too much cinnamon. All their aguas frescas were too sweet. All in all, this seemed like an attempt to make Mexican food l, but it falls short because the textures and flavors aren't consistent with Mexican food. Being Mexican and having just moved here from the Midwest, maybe it's my fault for having fairly high expectations of Mexican food. 😔

Google
An authentic taqueria in the NOLA area! I had 3 chicken tacos (pictured). They had the perfect balance of meat, cilantro, and onion on corn tortillas. They come with lime and salsa verde with just the right amount of heat. Outdoor seating only.

Google
Best burrito in New Orleans. I've traveled far and wide in search of the best burrito. Finally, I can say with confidence that I have found the world's best burrito...in the unlikely state of Louisiana. No, not San Diego. Not even Austin, Texas. Not Queens, New York. Louisiana. Be sure to try the pastor. You won't regret it.

Yelp
Great food all around !! Tortas Tacos Burritos Everything you could want from a taqueria
google avatar

Niki W.

Yelp
While I find the food quite good, it's very expensive for a road side taco stand. $14 for a single burrito is pretty outrageous. To note, pre-COVID, a burrito was $8. I get the prices are increasing, but a 75% increase?
google avatar

Yelp
As a westbank native, I have passed this place THOUSANDS of times and never tried it lol. I'm happy to report that this place is a solid taco spot. The food is fresh and budget friendly - I mean, who can beat $3 tacos, especially in this economy. I walked up to order, and I waited about 10 mins for my food so the service was quick. The ambiance is definitely a grab and go type of situation with only street parking. Overall, happy I tried them. I will be going back for a quick cheap lunch/ dinner on the go.

Yelp
The best food is made with love, and the chicken tastes like all the love in the world goes into it. I could tell just from driving by this place that it was good. It is a humble building on the side of the road that always has at least a handful of people hovering around the window. Go there and order chicken tacos or a chicken burrito and you will be cared for very kindly. Please do not try to customize your order. Just let them make your food how it's supposed to be made. The fewer the words exchanged, the better. If your order costs $9, tip them at least $3. Karma will put even more love into the food. That is exactly how this works, trust me.

Yelp
This place was recommended to me by one of my colleagues. It definitely did not disappoint. I ordered the popusas, and they were a good size and delicious. It took about 10mins for them to prepare them. I wasn't aware that they automatically gave you one with meat and one without. My preference would have been both with meat, but I will have to ask about that next. I definitely will be going back to try more items on the menu!
google avatar

Yelp
Really fast, made to order, authentic Mexican food. I got the steak quesadilla and they give you a lot plus the toppings. I've had the tacos before and they are great also. My only con is that they do not season the meat. Maybe they once did and got complaints. They give you salt packs. If that is the case then I guess nothing to change, if the majority said it's too much seasoning. I'll be trying the burrito and breakfast next.
google avatar

Yelp
Overpriced food that gets little amounts. They overprice it because construction workers seek jobs near there and they don't know any better than to get the nearest food. My dad is a fool for getting food here. The shack is decrepit and they never do anything special with it. Also they changed management, it ain't the same people that used to give a lot of food, just some new greedy, mean attitude owners.

Yelp
I always see a line outside of this Taqueria, so it was time to investigate for myself. We ordered, 4 fajita(carne asada) tacos, a chicken quesadilla, a fajita burrito and and an chicken enchilada plate. The total came to 36$, amazing. There's a limited outside seating area and a small stand table, if you're ready to grab a quick bite and run. I noticed traditional Mexican soft drinks available for sale, but our group opted to take ours to go. The beef tacos were a delicious street variety that I love and featured two hot sauces. Standard, double corn tortilla with cilantro and onion. Add hot sauce and a squeeze of lime and kapow! Your on the streets of Mexico. The burrito and quesadilla loaded with meat and cheese disappeared in no time flat. Questions regarding the doses were met with slurps, grunts and head nods. Jack happily said the quesadilla was very cheesy. Here comes the wah-wah.....When I opened the enchilada plate box, there were no enchiladas, only rice, beans and a salad. Insert crying face here. We were too far away to go back and I double checked the math. Yep they charged me. I'm super chill and mistakes happen. I communicated in broken Spanish, so I could have checked myself. Luckily, we ordered extra tacos, so I had something to eat. I was a happy camper, just slightly bummed. I'll still be back for tacos, but I'm gonna try the tongue next time......that's my favorite.

Yelp
Frequent visitor to this place. Easy but not quick, I've had long waits but it's worth it. I usually get the tacos (carne asada, Barbacoa, lengua, pastor -- all great), baleda con todo and pupusas. Be prepared to be patient and understanding, you'll be rewarded.
google avatar

Rose L.

Yelp
Trash food and attitude! Go to La Conquistador! It's much better and cheaper and the staff are friendly.
google avatar

Liza A.

Yelp
This spot is an authentic taqueria. Food is made to order. Lunch hour can be busy, so plan at least for ten minute wait for your food.
google avatar

Craig P.

Yelp
Use to be my go to taco place, but unfortunately they seem to have issues with employees. One visit will be great and the next one will suck. Very inconsistent. Normally the green sauce is mild and the red sauce very spicy. Last visit I found they had mixed them up so the green sauce was super spicy and the red was mild. I'm done with them.
google avatar

Jay A.

Yelp
I used to be a regular at TS at least 2 times a week at most over the past 3 years. There must have been a major change with new management and employees. I would usually order the Carne asada tacos which at first were really good and I would recommend enthusiastically to anyone, but there has been an extreme decline in the quality of food. I've tried to go back multiple times and consistently got bad quality food. The beef is over dried and it taste like cheap McCormick seasonings. This used to be a spot for the best tacos on the WB. It has completely lost its authenticity I can confidently say I would never spend another dollar at this location or any other for that matter. Please avoid or find another authentic Mexican taco location.

Yelp
I come from California/ Los Angeles were you find the best Mexican Food.! And let me tell you that I haven't had good tacos ever since I moved to Louisiana but this place hits the spot! I love the Tacos best tacos I've had in Louisiana ever!!! Love tacos de tripa and lengua delicious!! This place wins all around.! No chilangos, ni tacos el DF! This little tiny spot has great food!
google avatar

Yelp
We stopped by this taco stand on a whim and we were not disappointed. We ordered 3 different types of tacos...chicken, beef, and pork. All three were delicious...on corn tortillas, filled with pico and cilantro. We also ordered a beef and chicken combo burrito and split it. It was also fantastic. The prices were great too. I will definitely go back.

Yelp
From San Diego, CA, where we reign champions of these type of restaurants. Best you're gonna get in NO.

Yelp
Good, cheap and authentic Mexican cuisine! This is a hole in the wall taco stand that I always pass by and never thought to try until a friend raved about it on social media. Today I finally got the chance to try it out. After browsing through Yelp reviews, I decided on the steak quesadillas and my husband got the chicken taco and a burrito. The burrito was tasty but don't expect your typical beans and rice inside. He liked the taco and we both liked the steak quesadilla. It had tender steak with great flavor and the perfect amount of cheese on a perfectly toasted tortilla. I added avocados and jalapeños to it when I got home and it was perfect. Our total was $18 and we couldn't finish our food because the portions were so big. Would definitely reorder.

Yelp
Wow. Autentico! Great pupusas and I'm from Los Angeles and love pupusas. We also had pastor, asada, and chicken tacos, tasty meat, perfect salsa, cilantro, onion, just right... friendly calm customers, and hard working humble people behind the counter. Horchata delicious too. Will be back!!
google avatar

Alexander W.

Yelp
Nice little taco stand on the West Bank. Quick service, decent prices. Got some delicious pupusas and a pretty good al pastor burrito. I would like to go back to try their tacos as they look like traditional street taco. They have lengua, which is one of my favorite meats Gotta give taqueria sanchez a big thumbs up as some of the best Mexican/Latin American food I've had in New Orleans
google avatar

Meagan J.

Yelp
Five stars across the board. This little hole in the wall serves some of the BEST authentic Mexican food. They open early and close late. You can't sit inside but you can sit or stand outside of the building. The food is fairly priced for the large portions they serve. My favorite would be the steak quesadillas! It's loaded with steak and cheese. The service is quick so you won't be waiting long. Please give this place a try if you're ever on the westbank!
google avatar

Lilliana B.

Yelp
Have been going here since I was a kid. It is not that pretty or a fancy place at all but it is a classic spot for authentic Mexican food that has stayed consistent for over twenty years now. Great especially for when you don't have too much time or want a quick bite!

Yelp
Taqueria Sanchez is the very first place that I had ever eaten authentic Mexican food from. It was not at this location, but rather a Taqueria Sanchez food truck in New Orleans East. I have been to all locations are they are all really similar. Before eating Authentic Mexican food, I was eating tacos and burritos from Taco Bell thinking that was what Mexican food was like. When my brother took me to the food truck when I was younger, I instantly fell in love with it! I had to find more places like it! Though I would find a lot of places with Authentic Mexican, Taqueria Sanchez always has a special place in my heart. Over the years, I usually just order tacos at Mexican Food Trucks and Restaurants. I rarely order Burritos or Quesadillas anymore, but I decided to order a burrito during my recent visit to Taqueria Sanchez. I ordered a Lengua Burrito, Lengua Tacos, and a Pupusa. Food did not take too long to come out and they all looked amazing! The burrito was just as good as I remembered and especially delicious with the included salsa verde! Everything else was good too, but the burrito was the star of the show. Overall, a great place to get authentic Mexican! It is more of a grab and go place, but there are some stools to enjoy your food at this little building. There is no need to wait til Taco Tuesday to enjoy delicious tacos, just stop by Taqueria Sanchez!

Alexis Nicole G.

Yelp
I just moved here from Los Angeles, CA. So you know, I know good Mexican food. I had a carne asada taco, which was pretty darn close to LA. Granted you have to eat it with the cilantro and onion for all the flavor. I also got the chicken enchilada combo. The rice has little to no flavor, but the beans are pretty good. The enchiladas are extremely salty, but good enough.

Daniela A.

Yelp
If your looking for fast Mexican food this is your place ! Definitely delicious ! Recommend!
google avatar

Rachel R.

Yelp
I was so happy that I decided to try out this taco stop! Though it's awkwardly placed, this place provides you with some of the most authentic Mexican food you will find in New Orleans/Gretna! I hadn't found a place that reminded me of the authentic Mexican food in Houston but THIS TAQUERIA IS IT! You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Danielle G.

Yelp
Nothing like a simple taco. Carne, cilantro and onions with like on the side. The price is perfect for a filling meal. Always my spot to go for authentic tacos
google avatar

Jess C.

Yelp
Tried 3 times to find this place. Have not succeeded and given up. UPDATE:: AH! Don't rely on the directions that yelp will give via the maps because it had me totally driving in circles! Finally found it and will definitely try it out tomorrow! I will update the review then! Totally went today and they are delicious. Price has changed to $2.50/taco but they were tasty. I ordered chicken pork and tongue. All delish!! Try them! It looks sketchy but they were pretty quick and tasty.

Madeline C.

Yelp
The best authentic street taco stand in New Orleans. I love getting lunch at Taqueria Sanchez, their carne asada tacos are my favorite and the spicy green sauce is excellent.

Yelp
I ordered 4 steak tacos today. Didn't taste fresh at all was kinda dissatisfied on this taco Tuesday :(.

Yelp
I don't know why I never wrote about this place sooner, I have been here sooo many times and I'm never disappointed. This has to be my favorite authentic mexican spot in maybe all of the city. I always used to think why are people huddling around a sketchy looking hut. BUT do not judge a book by its cover because this place has my favorite authentic tacos and quesadillas. The steak quesadilla is a must have. The thing that makes this place stand out the most to me is the salsa. I think it is a creamy salsa verde of some kind I don't really know but it is a GAME CHANGER. Not to mention how affordable the food is too. I could spend less than $10 here and still walk away satisfied.
google avatar

Amy Y.

Yelp
Being from California originally, and a die hard taqueria Guerrero devotee, I had high hopes for this spot due to the hype and cult following. A side by side comparison follows. Definitely solid but Guerrero still beats a couple of metrics here. The green salsa is better at Guerrero (i have been known to buy it by the pint), and the portions are bigger there too. Sanchez does have chunkier, less greasy carne asada, a lighter sour cream, and super fresh veggies, and the flour tortilla enveloping the burrito was damn tasty. All in all, a solid taqueria, but a bit overhyped IMO. A good choice for the westbank but not worth a drive in and of itself. If you're looking for a hearty and solid meal this will def hit the spot, but the cult devotion is misplaced.
google avatar

Myles W.

Yelp
Being born and raised in California I have had my fair share of great Mexican food. If you like Mexican food and want the authentic experience make your way over her as soon as you can. The parking is a little tricky due to the location but pop that mask on and walk across the street and order the carne asada tacos and a cold coke. You won't regret it. Nothing fancy nothing modern just excellent home cooking.
google avatar

Suyrriah X.

Yelp
This is really good street food !!! The pork tacos are to die for !! I was not a fan of the quesadilla but I'm not a big steak person but they are really sloppily made which I think is authentic if you like that kind of style. My first bite into the taco changed my life. I didn't know who I was before I tried this place. I have passed this place up thinking it was rat & roach infested cheap nasty food but oh boy was I wrong..
google avatar

John L. H.

Yelp
This walk up restaurant serves authentic Mexican food. Located half a block from Home Depot, this place gets a steady walk up business from the day laborers near the store. The menu is a bit confusing since I don't speak Spanish fluently, but I managed. Both times I went I ordered some type of soft taco/burrito thing. Both times were with chicken, unless polo means something else. The food is very good. My meals came with a side of salsa that was spicy and delicious. Don't be intimidated by the appearance of this place. The food is very good. You wont be disappointed.
google avatar

Elizabeth D.

Yelp
I prefer the traditional tacos with corn tortillas, onions, and cilantro, but these are the most amazing tacos I've ever had. I'm pretty sure they make their corn tortillas, and the way they grill them is just perfect and delicious. I've tried the chicken, steak, barbacoa, and lingua (cow tongue). The lingua's texture and fattiness wasn't my favorite, but I will definitely be back for chicken and steak. The steak and barbacoa were my favorites. The barbacoa is a bit spicy, but I love it. Definitely one of the most authentic taco places ice ever been to. Don't be put off by the slightly run-down exterior, there's usually a line for a reason!
google avatar

R A.

Yelp
This is really the best food I've had. It's really awesome, hot, fresh and fast.1 order is enough for two ppl, I will be visiting here again really soon.
google avatar

Dominique L.

Yelp
I keep returning to this place to get my fix of lengua. Everything I've had from here has been delicious and I'm very glad that this is on the westbank. If you see this place in passing: be sure to stop by!
google avatar

Christopher W.

Yelp
Stopped in to try the tacos after some beyond belief hype and it was just as advertised. I got the barbacoa tacos and they were absolutely the best tacos I've had in New Orleans. The beef was tender and flavorful absolutely perfect. Cant wait to go back and try more. Don't come here if your not used to real Mexican food if your used to americanized crap this is not the place for you.
google avatar

Ingrid A.

Yelp
Best tacos in New Orleans, it's not a fancy place but the food is on point. We had the chicharrón , lengua and asada tacos and the salsas are delicious. Really clean too.
google avatar

Nesi J.

Yelp
If i could give zero stars i would. Refused to serve me. Just wanted some authentic food
google avatar

Don C.

Yelp
The food was fast, delicious, and authentic. The staff is friendly and professional. The neighboring restaurants will run you out of their parking lots, but that is only due to jealousy.
google avatar

Tiffany M.

Yelp
We ordered two Fajita Tacos and a Steak Burrito... The tacos were absolutely amazing... The Burrito was just ok... A little over seasoned but still eatable... Haven't had tacos that good since our last trip to Mexico...
google avatar

Karen K.

Yelp
It may look like a sketchy place but the tacos are PHENOMENAL. I get four al pastor tacos every time. There is usually a line when I go too which is always a good thing. I think that also have multiple locations as well.
google avatar

Victoria N.

Yelp
*not for those who love Americanized food i.e. Taco Bell* *not for those who love Tex-Mex* This is the real deal authentic mexican street food tacos guys. Honestly, you can get tacos like these all over the place in Texas but in NOLA? Nada. I am soo glad I found this place. I used to walk to it from school all the time. Yes, they don't offer much modifications/ sides but that's because you should enjoy it in its pure form, which to me means corn tortilla, fajita, cilantro, and onions. Of course, you gotta ask for the salsa verde. I ask for extra. Be warned, it packs a punch. The people inside really don't speak English, but I've never had a problem ordering and my orders always come out on par. Most of the menu is in Spanish anyways. There's no bench, but I'd prefer not to sit on the side or the westbank expressway anyways. The place is a little sketch, so I wouldn't stay long besides ordering these yummy tacos.
google avatar

Jennifer Leigh D.

Yelp
Great little take out spot. Got a veggie burrito and a lengue street taco $6.50 in total. Authentic for a simple dinner and delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
After buying slacks at the gap, my gal and I needed some legit Mexican food. We were welcomed by the most delightful woman, hugged me like I hadn't seen her in years, and thanked us for coming in during the rain. Mrs doubtfire was playing at full volume right at the scene when he looses his mask performing cpr. We order cokes at a table with my new mom, guacamole a veggie torta, and the flautas. EVERYTHING WAS AMAZING The beans the rices, the bread the chicky the chunks of avocado. I WANTED TO ORDER MORE AND TAKE IT HOME. The owner, I assumed also our waitress is an angel from above. She greeted everyone so sweetly and made my experience sublime. I've worked in restaurants for sixteen years and could only hope to make my guests feel this way. Go here and spend your money, I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
google avatar

Michael D.

Yelp
It's unbelievable that you can find food this good at a walk up former snow cone booth. They don't speak a lick of English, but who cares what you end up ordering because the food is amazing. I always overeat and fear death is coming-but it would be a fine death. Try everything. It's cheap and amazing.
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
Food is really good. I would say its authentic Mexican food. Place my order at the window, the wait is not long. Price seems fair for the portion of food served.
google avatar

Tiff D.

Yelp
This may be the sketchiest taco stand around. They dont speak any english not even numbers so come prepared to use sign language or bring a bilingual friend. They were out of ceviche, my guess is that they only make it on certain days. We got chicken tacos and steak tacos. Requested avocado which they didnt have. $25 for 10 tacos. They are served with a green sauce and a red sauce. The green is much more spicy but flavorful. The steak was seasoned well and tender. The chicken was pretty bland. I ended up pouring on the green sauce. I was hoping to have a solid late night quick taco spot. This isnt it.
