Where to Order Tamales in Oakland, Berkeley, and the East Bay | Eater SF

"A line of cars regularly snakes onto the stretch of Tennyson Road in Hayward that curves by Taqueria Senaida’s drive-thru. The menu is affixed to the front of an old van in the parking lot and in its window, a hand-written sign announces pork and chicken tamales. Hefty in size, the masa is flavorful with ample, well-seasoned meat inside." - Annelies Zijderveld

Best East Bay Tacos That Are Available for Takeout or Delivery | Eater SF

"The drive-thru is open at this Hayward institution, and the line of cars waiting to place their orders is as long as ever. The ground beef hard-shell crispy tacos are the thing to get here, and the SoCal-style carne asada fries are also excellent." - Luke Tsai

They have been around for 40+ years. Its drive thru or walk up only. I live out of town and havent been in years but crave it! So driving thru I treated myself! That first bite was as good as I remember!! I had the chicken super burrito with chips & guac on the side. Mmmmm!! Its a good size. Too much for one meal..so I got to enjoy it twice!

Google
In contrast to my expectations, I ordered a Happy style burrito at this establishment. While the meat was satisfactory, the quantity and quality of the listed fixings and toppings were significantly diminished. The guacamole, in particular, resembled salsa rather than guacamole and lacked flavor. I consumed the burrito within a 10-15 minute span and experienced immediate stomach aches, necessitating a visit to the restroom. This is my second visit to this establishment. My first visit was 12 years ago, during the time when Carne Asada fries were a popular offering. Since then, I have not returned, despite the significant hype surrounding the establishment on social media. Many individuals claim that it serves the best Mexican food in Hayward. Having resided in Hayward for approximately 30 years, I can confidently assert that there are numerous other establishments that offer more flavorful and reasonably priced Mexican cuisine. I do not intend to express any negative sentiments towards the owner of the company, but I believe that the food at this establishment falls short of authentic Mexican cuisine. Given my experience as a certified chef with a culinary degree, I would rate this establishment one out of five stars. I could have prepared a superior meal at home.

Google
Quick drive thru, used to eat there when I worked in Hayward and we would always go. Hadn't been there in 30 years and it tastes exactly the same. I always got the carne asada super burrito. The salsa goes great with it. Highly recommend if you want to grab a great burrito on the go or to take home or work

Google
I have no idea why this place has good reviews. One of the worse Mexican food. I ordered super nachos and they added so much cheese. I also added a video. Sad! Also, you won’t know what you paid for from the receipt.

Google
People have a nostalgic feel when coming to this place. I did once. Food is mid at best. Charge you for putting the avocado that comes in the burrito on the side. No smiles just sales. For the price and wait. I'll be at Eduardos 🤘🏾

Google
I went here on a recommendation from my Uber driver. I must say the food was pretty good 👍🏾 😋. It's not much of a dining place, but it is worthy of a visit. The rest is up to you! I had chicken 🐔 tacos 🌮. Maybe next time, I'll sit down at the tables outside provided.

Google
This is truly sad. I’ve ordered nachos with carne asada many times in the past, but this has to be the worse plate I’ve ever seen/eaten. I paid 13 dollars for a like 20 tortilla chips with microwaved cheese and a sad side of what they call their “guacamole”. There were no onions, no tomatoes, and no cilantro. The saddest part was just the about of chips I got. I’ve gotten so much more with much better effort with 11 dollars at la chapirrita, which is down the street btw, and was originally my first option until I found out they were closed. So I ended up here thinking it would be good since a lot cars were waiting at the drive through. Sadly it’s just another Arby’s drive in.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the burrito from this place. This spot opens at 10:00am and 5 minutes before opening they already had a few cars lined up on the drive thru. It's important to note that they only take cash. Looking forward to the next time I'm in the area and grabbing a burrito from here again.

Yelp
This is another review where I feel like I should let folks know: I'm a vegetarian. Which means I'm penning this review based on my experience eating a rice, bean and cheese Baby Burrito. But in the beginning, I was ignorant. I let my better half hype me up about Senaida's and I saw that packed drive-thru and got hopeful. But when our burritos arrived, my cheese wasn't melted and it was mostly refried beans and cold shredded cheese with little rice to be found. Again, I don't eat meat so it's totally possible that someone going there for some carne would have a different experience. The staff we interacted with (dude who took our order on a tablet as we sat in the drive-thru and the cashier who passed us our food from the window) were all kind and efficient. But the burrito just didn't do it for me. Also, maybe I'm crazy but $1.60 for an extra salsa seems hella steep.

Yelp
I've been a lifelong fan of Senaidas, but it's hit or miss. Having a rock should be 1 star immediately, but I've been going here for decades and usually have a solid experience. I'm STILL so shocked as I type this because my partner yells, "AH!" We inspect it, and I was in major disbelief. How does a ROCK end up in a burrito? Someone needs to do quality control cause this is crazy.

Yelp
This has been a go to burrito place for 30+ years. Visiting family we swing by early on a Saturday morning and as usual cars on line early. I have always had the happy burrito and the flavor was as always great. Orchata is good and it's always fun as they will put tomatoes in there which is something you don't expect in a burrito but here it works. I have said in other reviews that Hayward has such a wide variety of Mexican food spots and if you are from here everyone has their favorites, this is definitely one of mine. Same family that has been running it since I used to go to Tennyson High so sitting there in the one of two wood benches with the drive through full is always a deja vu moment of years past.

Yelp
This place is drive through only. They have an outside table where you can park and eat after going through the drive through but a very small area. The service is so friendly and casual. The food is pretty good. Salsa is tasty but could use a little more heat. It's not spicy at all. We ordered a shredded chicken happy burrito, Asada super nachos, and crispy chicken taco. Nice good portions and the burrito and nachos was enough for two meals. Cheap, tasty food for a quick meal.

Yelp
4 1/2 stars for sure. So, a Mexican Drive Thru restaurant. You know this isn't a healthy place :), but it does taste good. I don't frequent often, but when I'm in the mood for nachos, this is my go-to place. Sometimes when it gets crowded, an order taker will walk out to the car to take your order. The nachos aren't like the movie/ballgame nachos with that fake cheese sauce. Although it does have a fake guacamole sauce, which is my FAVE! So the tortilla chips are layered with beans and cheese and tossed in a toaster oven/oven. Since I usually get mine with Carnitas, the Carnitas is then place on top of the cheese and the mouthwatering guacamole-ish sauce is placed on top. They have a really good hot sauce that is great too. A couple other items that I've tried, that are definitely a HIT are the crunchy beef taco and the Happy Burrito, with Carnitas of course.

Yelp
I came here when I first moved to Hayward a year ago but I had a lot of exploring to do! I came back the other day and it reminded me of a place I LOVE back home. Now I can't stop thinking about it!! I got the carnitas baby burrito with beans and rice. It was so delicious and the salsa had great flavor. I can't wait to go back. Fair prices and the baby burrito was as big as regular burritos elsewhere that cost $5 more.

Yelp
*THEY ARE NOT DRIVE THROUGH ONLY, A REVIEW BELOW WAS INCORRECT* So I've tried Mexican food all over the Bay Area, from the famous places all around SF to that one everybody knows with the orange sauce in SJ, although absolutely NOTHING has EVER exploded my tastebuds so good like the Shrimp Burrito I got from here. Service: 10/10, APPLE PAY ACCEPTED! Really nice cashier, was a little hard to hear him through the little window but he was super nice & patient while I ordered. Food: 10/10 OMG, SHRIMP BURRITO - the shrimp? LITERALLY PERFECTLY COOKED. Not rubbery, not over cooked just perfection. Great smell, great flavor, excellent tasting rice and beans, literal perfection. Pineapple Agua Fresca? SO GOOD. Flavorful and gave me a LARGE amount. Parking: 10/10, it's a drive through taqueria! Although I parked up because they have some really nice benches you can sit at in the shade and enjoy your meal. I wish I didn't live in the Peninsula otherwise I'd come here on the daily honestly. Really good food. Thank you!

Harry P.

Yelp
The service is pretty bad, low class to say the least. The guys working there never seem to be in the mood to take your order especially at the window. Typically the only commendable server is the one with the iPad going out to take orders. Otherwise, fat 1 star in service. Food is OK. Super burrito is the only thing I'd recommend. I'm surprised this spot is still in business and people frequent this spot. I wouldn't be mad if I got replace with a drive thru coffee/bagel shop.

Yelp
Burrito, chips, salsa, tacos, and agua de Jamaica! Everything authentic and delicious!!

Yelp
I have been coming to Seniadas since 1980 and over the years I've seen changes but I've always have liked the flavor of their food but recently with the prices going through the roof I was extremely disappointed in the lack of meat. With paying more IMO a consumer should get what they paid for. I probably had maybe 3 oz in my super carna asada burrito. I'm attaching pics of all the tortilla that I had half way thru.

Marcus J.

Yelp
Oh yes! Do it and do it now! For many years this has been the best drive thru. Food still tastes like it did when I was a kid. Great service too. And it a nostalgic feeling. Absolutely delicious!

Yelp
Drove down Tennyson one day and saw a line of cars backed up onto the main road at this place. My boyfriend and I decided to try it a few weeks later. There was no line (week day), but someone comes out to take your order on an ipad and by the time you get to the window, it's pretty much ready. There was a Cash Only sign taped there, but they accept credit card. I got 4 of their soft tacos (2 carne asada and 2 al pastor) and thought they were a bit on the high side ($3.50 each). The tortilla was definitely soft...kind of wish they crisped it up A TEENY BIT. Meats were good and well-seasoned. I would probably pass on the Al Pastor next time though. My boyfriend got the Happy Burrito and we're still stumped as to what makes it different from the Super Burrito as they both have the same ingredients listed on the menu lol. Also, not sure what it was, but he ended up drinking his burrito. Something inside was very saucy or watery. I guess a first time for everything lol.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Pretty good crispy chicken tacos. Horchata tasted strange. Yes, the guy who takes the orders is rude, but the cashier at the end is nice. Kind of expensive, a bit greasy but pretty good. I paid $20 for two crispy tacos combination plate with a medium Horchata.

Mella G.

Yelp
Tomato slice in my burrito :/ not even a pico just a whole slice in my burrito. It was good otherwise
google avatar

Arlo T.

Yelp
Yo I always wondered why this place was hella crowded and blocking hella traffic. There's a reason because this place smacks. Ever since moving into the area, people have told me that this place claps your taste buds and got your lips smacking. This time I actually left a review because why not. There's hella parking, but people are hella lazy and use the drive through. Honestly just park behind the shop and wait at the window. It's hella easier and you don't waste gas. I've had the torts, fries and the burritos they all smack.

Yelp
Mexican food is one of my favorites. Taqueria Senaida's is my go-to spot when in South Hayward for a good tasting burrito for the last 18 years. I've had almost everything on the menu, but always go for the steak or shrimp happy burrito with whole beans, light rice, sour cream, lettuce, tomato, guacamole, and cheese it's so fresh tasting and really good. The wet burritos are decent. I'm just not really a wet burrito person like that. Sometimes you get a good size burrito with plenty meat and few times you might get a burrito that's lacking in ingredients, depending on who makes it or the time of day. I use to think this spot was 5 stars but over the years, the prices have went up quite much . A steak happy burrito years ago use to be $7 now it's $12 with the same portion size. The shrimp burrito price is more. The red salsa is great and taste homemade very good with the tortilla chips and on tacos and burritos. The menu is decent with popular items like tamales, carnitas, flautas, wet burrito. The taco salad is pretty good. They also have salmon as well. I would suggest the regular tacos and not the hard shell tacos because the shell taste stale the few times I've had them. Nachos are okay, it wouldn't be in my top 3 to order from here. The burritos are the highlight for me. I like the fact that it's a drive -thru, which moves pretty fast, since the guy walks up to your vehicle and takes your order. The walk up window line doesn't be that long, but some days this spot gets really busy and the drive-thru have cars lined up off the curb. There's not very much seating available but a few tables only outside seating though. It's still cool for lunch with a couple friends. They offer catering, and you can get delivery service with Hayward Zamato , Postmates and UberEats. This place has definitely became more popular over the last decade, so they must be doing something right.

Yelp
The enchilada plate was awesome, so good, carne, molida, AKA,Hamburg meat rice and beans . Enchilada Plate

Yelp
I've been buying burritos at this place since the 80s, I wish they had a bigger drive-through or dual drive-through because they can get pretty busy on the weekends. Love their super burritos and super nachos.
google avatar

Rose O.

Yelp
Mexican fast food? Yes! I did not feel cooking tonight. But I was craving carnitas. This came with your choice of corn or flour tortillas and salsa on the side. I wouldn't say it was the best tasting carnitas around, but it definitely satisfied my craving.
google avatar

Yelp
Senaida's is my probably my all time favorite taqueria. I've been going here since I was a kid and the food still tastes just as great. I'm so glad this place survived COVID. The super burrito is my go to and is always delicious. The quesadillas are also realllly good. The workers are always nice and service has always been pretty quick. The drive thru line can be long and spill onto the street but it's definitely worth it. I'll always come back for more.
google avatar

Eric E.

Yelp
Best super burritos in the world!! Been going here for years and it never disappoints
google avatar

Theresa B.

Yelp
I have been coming to Senaida's way back when my parents lived here in Hayward 20 years ago maybe longer. I would come here twice a week for the nachos. I have moved out of the area but whenever I come into town I have to stop and get my nachos, and the prices are good.
google avatar

Love U.

Yelp
A bit greasy (still giving them 5 stars) because I love how they make their burritos HOT (temp) just the way we like them. I've tried many burritos around the Bay Area but find this spot to be consistent (it's literally the same every time) They have some yummy chips and don't get me started about the salsa (I always get extra). My Dad doesn't have much of an appetite due to his illness, but he love love loves their regular chicken, rice and beans burrito. I get it every time he's craving.

Deborah A.

Yelp
For the price you pay and they get your order wrong, I called was asked to return burrito, being to far away to double back to replace your order which should have been right in the first place is such an inconvenience. I ended up giving it to a family member. It's starting to be a hit or miss with what was my favorite stop!
google avatar

Dan M.

Yelp
Good burrito place, the highlight being it's a drive-thru (which I've yet to see in the Bay Area for Mexican joints). Unfortunately when I tried to go on MLK day the drive-thru line was almost around the corner, so I ended up parking around the corner and went to their pick-up counter. Note this place is cash only. Ordered a bunch of different items (asada fries, tacos, burrito, rice/asada plate); everything was tasty but nothing really stood out. One thing to note: chips are not free. I think it's like a dollar for a large bag of them. They don't throw any salsa in w/your order either unless you order chips. Kind of annoying as I've yet to find a place that charges for chips, but I guess in a COVID world, you have/can to monetize everything.
google avatar

Ambar C.

Yelp
Best burritos in the Bay. Hands down. We don't really order anything else off the menu, but why would we? This drive up spot has been a classic, down home place to get delicious burritos that are not very greasy. The ratio of meat to other ingredients makes sense, and Senaida's does not skimp. I tell everybody in the area to drop by. There is ALWAYS a line, but they have a handle on it like it's In N Out burger. By the time you get to the window, your food is up. Anyway, at this time, you need to need to look the menu up online before you go, or you can just... ORDER A BURRITO. Any meat is good -- carnitas, asada, or al pastor (my fave). The beans are legit. The rice is as good as my grandma's (and she loves it here, too). If you order the super, it's got just the right amount of guacamole and crema. Back to the al pastor. It's got a nice smoky gristle to it, and the marinade is sooooo good. My family and I have been coming here for as ling as I can remember (like, decades), and we give it our Mexican seal of approval. *Disclaimer: We've only ever gotten burritos.
google avatar

Lety F.

Yelp
Food is not good at all. I ordered a happy burrito thinking it was going to be really good and it ended up being disgusting, they added too much beans. As soon as I took the first bite they were coming out and oozing on my hand, they were flavorless. The salsa that came on the side was always savory and this time it was spicy and he wanted to charge me extra for a thing of salsa. Wtf! Condiments are free ‍. Never going again!

Gwen D.

Yelp
I *love* their ground beef enchiladas, refried beans & rice!! Hubby likes their beef crispy tacos & burritos the drive thru looks intimidating, but they have someone come out & take orders using a tablet, so by the time you get up to the window, your order is ready!
google avatar

Marilyn T.

Yelp
We came to this drive-thru taqueria in search of tamales after reading about them on an Eater list. It really is just a drive through, but there's a walk-up window for ordering, as well. Their regular menu doesn't have tamales, so I don't think it's an every day thing, but they have a truck outside with a handmade sign that says "tamales - pork and chicken". We called ahead, and they did have them the day we went. The regular menu is your standard taqueria menu. Note: birria is only available on weekends. So the tamales... - Pork: great flavor on both the masa and the pork, good texture on the tamale. Pork was the winner. - Chicken: white meat, but not much filling compared to the pork one. It also had less flavor (use their salsa). It was $9.47 for 3 tamales, which seemed like a very reasonable price to me. CASH ONLY. They're open every day except New Year's Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and 4th of July. They've been open since 1979, so they're doing something right!
google avatar

Cindy R.

Yelp
I'm very upset! I've been going here for over 25 years with my family and will never be going again. My sweet daughter went to go and pick up food today and the cashier was beyond rude. Because she didn't leave a tip in the tip jar, he called her a Puta. Just because we don't look Mexican doesn't mean we don't understand your derogatory words!!!! If I could leave no stars I would!

NoneyA B.

Yelp
UNSAFE they let lines spill into thy street instead of asking them to pull in waiting perking spot numbers like other places do. You can't drive by on busy hit your car street. They're begging for people to get hit.
google avatar

Samantha O.

Yelp
Seriously.... Why is everyone here so rude? The one young man who hands you your order in the drive through at nights is the only nice person who works here. Everyone else is so freaking miserable, I don't understand.

Craig B.

Yelp
The food is the same, still very good. The service staff has changed and been friendlier. But tonight I went at 8:40, 20 minutes before closing, and they were already closed with te drive-thru blocked.
google avatar

Jenny T.

Yelp
Crunchy shell taco? Hell ya! That's my fav fav!!! I only ordered 1 but I could had eaten 10!!! The only reason why I came was because when I was driving through this neighborhood to get to Costco, I saw a long line of cars waiting their turn for the drive-thru and saw photos of food! Otherwise I would had thought this place was just another car wash! Hole in the wall taqueria has been here for a long time now and it doesn't look like the pandemic is hurting their business either...
google avatar

Tearsa I.

Yelp
I've eaten here since I was a young teenager and 30 years later they still don't disappoint!! I'm glad to see they're still operating through the economic challenges.
google avatar

Lora C.

Yelp
Food is great. But the line is always crazy. I always call in before going and even if i call when i get there i still have to wait for the food for a bit.
google avatar

Andrea M.

Yelp
Wonder place to eat! Delicious food and welcoming staff! I definitely plan to come back and try more food!
google avatar

Cathy B.

Yelp
I drive from Vallejo, 1-2 times a month for the last 20 years to get the best burritos ever in the bay area. This is the 1st time ever that I was disappointed. The tortilla was tough, the ingredients we the same, thank goodness. Please use the original tortillas.

Lynda S.

Yelp
Our vegetable burritos were so good. The service is excellent, very friendly and polite. This is the only place my family comes to.
google avatar

Lai L.

Yelp
This place is more of an express drive through taqueria. I've been here many years ago and wasn't impressed, so I went back the other day just to make sure. Since I have been in Hayward, I've been on a hunt for Mexican food that taste like my hometown's in Oakland, but I have yet to locate one. Taqueria Senaida's is usually busy during rush hour, so try to avoid dinner and lunch times. I went around 2pm and there were only two cars ahead of us. Ordering was fast, but they make you pull up into the parking lot for your food. We got the happy shrimp burrito, super carne asada burrito and nachos! Everything was very heavy, which was expected, but lacking zest to it. I felt like they just threw a bunch of stuff in there and there was no love. All this to say, it wasn't horrible, just not to my standards, I guess. My mission continues for a solid, authentic (ish) Mexican truck or taqueria that gives me that nostalgic 23rd Ave burrito. One day...
google avatar

James D.

Yelp
Awesome food and service! I enjoy being able to drive up order my food in a timely manner and always enjoy the food and experience. It's exactly what I want when ordering delicious Mexican food. It makes sense why they've been around for so long!! Couldn't be happier
google avatar

Natural G.

Yelp
HAPPY BURRITO is my go to since the early 2000s. There's a lot of good Mexican food in Hayward but they all have their own unique flavors. This is definitely a top 5 choice for me.
google avatar

Edna G.

Yelp
During Covid-19, they are open for business through their drive thru and walk up window. I see the workers do wear their masked and gloves. Staff are pretty friendly and helpful. They have long car lines and have a guy walking up to you to pre-order so make sure you know what you want. They are pretty fast, decent prices for their food and good enough taste but nothing special. You can customize their meals, ala carts and appetizers. They do offer a lot of meat in their burritos and quesadillas but definitely needs salsa, sour cream and guacamole to make it taste better. I usually will like their food a lot if it can stand by itself but this needed other things to taste better. I did like the chicken enchiladas by itself. The retried beans needed more beans and it tasted like more lard than beans; almost runny texture. Spanish rice was good. Overall was ok for me but my husband likes going here mainly for the steak burritos as it's pretty for for the price. At least, I have them a try!! [48/100]
google avatar

Ana L.

Yelp
I love coming to this place. Their food is consistently good and I appreciate how hard their staff works to provide us good service and food but maybe work on collaborating with customers special requests especially if they're willing to pay for it and if not too complicated. I had requested if they can make a nacho dip because I didn't want to consume soggy nachos at work. It's my fault for expecting that this task wasn't too difficult to deliver but they simply don't serve it that way. Maybe you guys can consider making a dip option for customers who are willing to pay for non soggy nachos. It's a deconstructed taco. I didn't think it was going to be that difficult of a process to separate the chips. If you guys offer a dip cup. I'll pay for it. If not, I'll simply go elsewhere. You guys make solid Mexican food but you're not only one.
google avatar

Patrick D.

Yelp
This is my most favorite taqueria in the Bay Area always get the super shrimp burrito and a large horchata. Drive thru line can be backed up but the food and service is worth it.
google avatar

Yelp
The food was great, i had a torta. So far its the best ive had since im new to the area. Agua de Jamaica was delicious, prices felt fair, and the best part? My fatass didnt have to get out of my car lol

Yelp
Guy at window is never friendly, but damn the burritos are good. Thank God I'm not looking for a friend. I live in Concord, work in SF and visit my office in Fremont weekly. Never too far when I'm craving a happy burrito! Your not coming here for ambiance, your coming to take out some great food.
