Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate Last Week in the San Francisco Bay Area - Eater SF

"The shop offers the usual meat options, such as carnitas and carne asada, but I gravitated toward the less-common suadero and tripita just to switch things up." - Eater Staff

The meat is always tender. The sauce is amazing taste. The food is always fresh and hot also with that big dash of authentic Mexican food. If you want late night too, it's open until 2am:

Google
Amazing tacos 🌮 I tried 3 different meats - carne asada, al pastor, and lamb. They were all lovely. The man at the taco station also gave me a nice scoop of grilled onions. You order tacos in one place and everything else at a separate counter where you pay. The establishment was clean enough - I would avoid the women’s bathroom.

Overcharged me by $1.00 tonight and made no effort to rectify it. I ordered a regular carne asada burrito which on the menu was listed as $11.95. I got that with a Coke and it came to $20.28, which seemed high me. The woman at the counter said it was because of taxes. I asked her for an itemized receipt and it showed that she had charged me $12.95 for the burrito. I pointed it out to her and she looked at me, then looked at the menu board and then looked at the receipt and said there was nothing she could do. I told her she overcharged me a dollar and that she owed me a dollar. She said there was nothing she could do. I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt that maybe she just doesn’t understand how to refund someone and wasn’t trying to purposefully rip me off, so this is more a message to the owner: either update your menu board to reflect the prices you’re charging people unbeknownst to them, or train your employees how to give refunds. This is bad business and you’ve lost me as a many years long customer. Suerte.

Google
Food was actually not bad. A little disappointed they didn't have tripa or suadero. The Pastor was good, the Barbacoa was descent, but the lengua was my favorite.

Located on busy 24th street is this Mexican restaurant. Shrimp burrito bowl had generous portion. Only that the tomatoes in the red salsa tasted stale. Green sauce was 👌🏼. They maybe spicy so try with a little first. You may ask if a dish on their menu is spicy or not. Tacos 🌮 come in count of 2. Horchata drink was a little too sweet, but worth a try. It’s got cinnamon in it. The cucumber drink was very refreshing! You may choose to sit inside or outside, overlooking the happening street. They do have a large vegetarian menu. Many local’s favorite. Definitely worth a try!

Google
Visited this taco place in San Francisco and had an authentic taco experience! The steak tacos were delicious, with perfectly cooked meat bursting with flavor. While the tacos were outstanding, the atmosphere wasn't the best as cleanliness seemed lacking. Nonetheless, if you're in San Francisco for some amazing tacos, this place is a must-visit. I'd love to return, especially to try their renowned burritos!

Google
Go to spot for tacos in the city if you want something to get the job done quick. Suadero, al pastor, chorizo, and carnitas are the best meat option in my opinion. Ask about the daily Agua fresca options they have available

JC Belmont

Google
Food was just ok. Courtesy chips and salsa was nice of them. Nachos were good but I bet they were microwaved since those type of plates can’t go in oven or salamander. The huevos con chorizo were dry, had good flavor but needed more red sauce, the tortillas they came with were nicely cooked, refried beans and rice were good. Mango drink was good. Not sure if I’ll come back or not.

Yelp
Taqueria Vallarta in SF is the ultimate late-night spot to recharge after a night out with friends. Always open late, it's the perfect go-to when you need good food to keep the fun going. I stopped by for 8 tacos (because why not?) and they did not disappoint! The staff is super friendly and quick to help, and with so many options to choose from, you can't go wrong. I went with Al Pastor, Carne Asada, Pollo Asado, and Lengua--each one packed with flavor and just what I needed. There's plenty of seating, and the vibes are great with all the fellow night owls grabbing their taco fix too. If you're in the Mission late at night, this spot is a must! Great food, good vibes, and perfect for satisfying those taco cravings.

Yelp
Best tacos in SF! They had a variety of meats such as, barbacoa, al pastor (comes with roasted pineapple only served at night), lengua (my favorite), cabeza, and so much more. They give you the slow cooked white onions on the side and jalapeños, if you ask for it. The salsa verde compliments the tacos really well and you can also ask for salsa roja, which is more spicy. I definitely recommend this place if you want street style tacos and after a night of drinking. Also, the staff is super nice and accommodating.

Yelp
This is my go-to taqueria in the mission. Always alive with music and people congregating from around the neighborhood. Super sweet ladies who run the front register are always happy to see you. They have several burrito options for vegetarians and each one tastes delicious in their own way. Occasionally i opt for the juevos de mexicano dish if i feel like having breakfast for dinner. Recently i started dating this guy who was born and raised in Oaxaca, Mexico. He told me that his favorite food to eat is tacos... so, i went to Vallarta and bought a few of their tacos from the taco bar in the front. I don't eat meat but i've been told that this taco bar is famous around the city for being super authentic like the kind of street tacos that are found in Mexico. Anyway after he ate them he said that the quality and realness was very high. Made me so happy to make my boo so happy and i'll be getting him those tacos every time he comes over :D

Yelp
I've been coming here for a few years now! They've really upgraded their process / have done some renovations through the years. Tacos have always been great. Service is quick, if you want tacos you order them at the counter right when you enter and pay at the end of the counter. The space is nice and has plenty of seating. The carne asada here is the star, it's juicy and tender and makes you want 3 more after eating one. Some of the other meats here can be hit or miss depending on the day but I always love getting a variety when ordering.

Yelp
* date visited: 07.30.2024 * ordered: pastor taco and carne asada taco * open super late. hella seating. fast service. pastor was prob some of the best i had, with the pineapple too. i'm usually a pastor only girlie, but holy the carne asada was also soooo good. tender, salty, and not too fatty. and the caramelized onions were a nice touch. double tortilla the way god intended, and the onion and cilantro ratio is fantastic. i've had this place like 3x since i moved! would recommend
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered a single asada taco here for lunch, the tortilla was soaked all the way through with grease, I asked the man behind the grill if he could make me another one, he refused. This is the Mission, there's an abundance of great Mexican food around here, don't waste your time or money here.

Yelp
Great tacos and quality over the counter service. Straightforward menu and staff make for a great place to end your night out in the mission

Yelp
Good late night option for tacos in Mission. Would highly recommend the al pastor taco (great with cheese too) -- the pineapple adds a sweetness that pairs really well with the savory spicy meat. The al pastor meat is probably the best I've had! Also got a chorizo taco but sadly that one wasn't my favorite -- the flavor wasn't for me. It was also quite salty. The portions are pretty generous though -- $4 per taco, +1 for cheese or sour cream -- and two tacos is quite filling. The service here was so fast and efficient! You order and immediately get your tacos freshly served up, with all the toppings done for you. They accept card and apple pay which is really convenient. The interior had a lot of seating and was pretty busy even around 1am. It wasn't the cleanest or comfiest of environments, but it had good vibes.

Yelp
A busy spot on 24th, with some of my favorite tacos in the city! You order with the cashier but get your tacos at the stand right next to the door (it's inside the restaurant still). If you order anything other than tacos, you'll pick up from the cashier area. They had all the usual meats, we tried carne, pollo, al pastor, and lengua. I loved them all, super flavorful and juicy. I also had a tostada and that was a lil spicy but really good!

Yelp
Pastor tacos are fireeeeeee My favorite late night taco spot in SF. Quick service consistent bomb tacos.
google avatar

Yelp
I can't believe that this is the first time I've tried this taqueria. They open late night and serve delicious tacos. They did get my taco order wrong but I'm not complaining because they tasted great! The California burrito was massive and was great value. I do think the amount of fries in the California burrito was a bit overwhelming for me. Nonetheless, I highly recommend trying this spot if you're craving for some late night munchies
google avatar

Dessa R.

Yelp
Throughout the years, still a favorite taco spot to go to. It's casual and quick for both lunch, dinner or after the bars. Tacos are always delicious....the price may have gone up to $4-5 with the fixings, but I love coming here for my steak tacos!
google avatar

Alice S.

Yelp
I ordered a carne asada quesadilla via a delivery app but ended but with chicken instead of carne asada. The quesadilla was very disappointing and not something I would ever order again. Portions were tiny, and it didn't taste good. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing here??!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped here after a late night of drinking and justice was served!! Salsas we're great. Tacos were great! Overall friendly place.
google avatar

Yelp
So many great taquerias in the mission, but this place stands out. I came here with a group of friends after a boozy night in the mission. On weekends, they close at 230am so when the bars close at 2am you have a small window of opportunity to get your taco fix before heading home. The Al pastor tacos were super authentic and flavorful. There was no line here, unlike the other more popular spots in the mission. .

Jamie D.

Yelp
The worst spot to order door dash from. I ordered caldo de pollo. Obviously it's not in a bowl. But I literally only had one piece of chicken one long piece of carrot and that was it. There was nothing else. They forgot my avocados and refused to refund. Mind u it was like $6 worth of avocados lol. Never again
google avatar

Jenny J.

Yelp
One of my favorite taco spot for Al Pastor!!! I just love the way they season and cook the meats. Depending on the hours and day, they have the Al Pastor Roast thingy. It's a chill spot with uncomfortable stool chairs lol. So with that said, we have to eat and go. They opened late night on the weekends too. Good for people after the club or grab food and then go to an after party lol. So get there by 1am to beat the line.

Yelp
Delicious tacos! I popped in around 4pm on a Wednesday after a dental appointment nearby, and was impressed! Fast, friendly service; flavorful food at reasonable prices; and plenty of seating - this place really hit the spot.

Yelp
Alright, let's give you guys a real, honest review. Because we are now involving tacos. Which can get tricky, especially in the Mission when you have plenty of spots nearby. This is a must, go-to LATE NIGHT spot, if you are trying to give into your taco desires, before 2am hits the clock. I can't stress this enough. If it's the daytime, spot is still good; but now, you have a lot more choices to work with nearby. Of course with those choices, they're slightly a bit better than this spot, and more value. But this is a primarily a late night spot, I love coming here after work (12:30am) because it's a place that's always open, and never disappoints when giving into our taco cravings. I always go with the lengua and al pastor tacos. The Al pastor is cut off the trompo, how it should be. Meat is very fresh, tender, and never disappoints. You already know, it's gotta be served with slices of pineapple. Ask for their green and red sauce on the side, they usually don't serve you it if you don't ask. Closed mouths don't get fed. The lengua tacos melt as first bite. They're just as good as the Al pastor, if not better. A lot of people come here late night to fuel those cravings, or maybe because they're a ton of bars nearby, and this place is open till 2am.

Yelp
Wow, amazing tacos! I had tripa, cabeza, and lengua. Lengua is usually my favorite, but tripe here tastes even better. Probably the best tripe taco I've ever had! It was perfectly sooooo succulent and juicy. All the taco toppings were on point and so flavorful, no need for any sauces! Cabeza was okay; I wouldn't get it from here again, but tripa and lengua were great.

Yelp
They have really made a come back after the pandemic. Very clean now and fresh. A good pit stop in mission

kelly b.

Yelp
The burrito was mediocre. Even though we asked for not spicy. It came with spicy salsa, but that is forgiven with delivery. However, upon opening the tacos we were greeted with a mess of a plate with a long black hair. So we ended up having to split a burrito for dinner, and thought we could supplement with chips. How burnt and stale they were. We both went to bed hungry after having half a mediocre burrito.
google avatar

Christina C.

Yelp
Went here with my boyfriend after a night of drinks since it was open late. Unfortunately the reviews were completely wrong. Got 2 pastor tacos and 2 asada. The asada was horrible it was hard, dry and no seasoning the pastor was better but nothing to rave about. I'd suggest going somewhere else.
google avatar

Rashad K.

Yelp
This is probably the 4/5th taqueria I've been to in the SF area and this was by far the best tacos I've had in the area. There really are sooo many Mexican options in the mission area and I can't say this place is the best but it was the best for me specifically for the pastor tacos. Also the tacos were very cheap and the flavor really delivered. The staff were friendly and the service was fast. I definitely recommend this place as a great taco option.
google avatar

Andrew O.

Yelp
Staff at the cashier and taco bar rude customers service . They all look angry as I placed my orders . The meats for tacos are chewy and overcooked. $4 for over cooked stale tacos not the best business . Nobody was inside it was empty when I placed my order

Maria T.

Yelp
The lady in the register is rude and got my order wrong instead of saying sorry she give me attitude and just put the food on the table after I told her she got my order wrong.
google avatar

Ray H.

Yelp
This place is so nostalgic. I used to live across the street about 15 years ago and I went back while visiting SF and it was just what I remembered-- authentic, delicious and satisfying.
google avatar

Yelp
After searching on the Yelp app for places to grab food after being at PW, this was one of the only places that was going to be open longer than 30 minutes. I found a close spot to park and the line to order wasn't too long of a wait. It goes by fast if you're with a friend chatting. There were a lot of people sitting inside and they also have outdoor sidewalk and street seating. Cash or card accepted. There is also an ATM inside. I had a good experience except... there was one taco I absolutely did not like and did not finish eating (the carne asada). I somehow saved this one for last and it was my least fave. The meat didn't taste seasoned and it was very chewy I had to spit it out. The tacos I did like were the barbacoa and chorizo - so much wonderful flavor. I honestly should have tried their al pastor in place of the asada... I think from now on I'm not going to order asada at any other place unless I know how they make theirs cause I hate being disappointed, lol. Carne asada isn't even my favorite meat to select, but I get it thinking it will be legit anywhere. Carnitas is also something I wouldn't have minded trying. Will have a better game plan if I visit here again in the future. The area at the time of night we were there seemed fairly safe. Well lit near the restaurant and there weren't a TON of people there, but enough to where it seemed like it was a spot people went to after a night of being out.
google avatar

Priyadharshini G.

Yelp
Not memorable for me. Had a veggie burrito. Had to wait a bit for my takeout. Friendly service. Decent ambiance (I guess)
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
I think this place has the best street tacos in the Bay Area. Of the 5-6 places in the mission this one consistently delivers. The Al Pastor is amazing.
google avatar

Ko V.

Yelp
Stumbled across this place while hungry and it was SO GOOD! Super cute restaurant and the staff was really friendly.

Ness F.

Yelp
Lady at the register didn't give my change and is very rude and unsanitary we witnessed her picking her ears then reaching into the chips and eating them without gloves in front of the customers. Got mad that I ordered a side of onions and purposely took 15 min to make them. If you're going to be in the front representing the restaurant you have to have a better attitude!
google avatar

Jeimy N.

Yelp
We ordered a a quesadilla after not being able to eat the whole day. As soon as I took the first bite it was disgusting. I could taste the sour cream melting into the grease. The tacos sudados were sweaty by the oil on the pan. I wonder how often they change the oil. My steak quesadilla tasted like lard. I had to dissect my chicken tamal. For sure we will never go back again.
google avatar

Beatriz M.

Yelp
Worst tacos I have ever try in my life. I ordered 3 tacos of suadero, meat has no taste I honestly I doubt it was even suadero, tacos were cold, the tortilla has a horrible taste, just a little pinch of cilantro and onions, the salsa no flavor at all. The service was fast. But honestly $4 for a taco is absolutely ridiculous for this horrible tacos. Won't recommend.

jennifer m.

Yelp
Was excited to try , TikTok said they were really good , along with some locals saying they had great tacos. They were not good . They were okay I'd say 4/10 Very dirty place too.
google avatar

Monika R.

Yelp
This place was literally the most disgusting tacos I've ever had in my life I'm not sure how this places has good reviews the amount of grease that was on my plate was ridiculous it soaked threw the paper plate and was soaking my hands the tortillas literally disintegrated when I tried picking up my taco And I've been throwing up for the past 3hrs so eat here if you want food poisoning
google avatar

Katrina F.

Yelp
This place looks and tastes like the real deal. The system for their restaurant is a bit odd. The only 2 times I've been here so far were late at night so maybe the experience is different in the daytime, but you order plates/burritos from one area, tamales from another, and tacos from another. It was a bit confusing at first, but nothing really to complain about. I've gotten many tacos and a tamale from here and everything is just so good. I will admit the tacos are on the greasier side, but they're so flavorful. I think about these tacos all the time, and can't wait to go back!

Rodrigo F.

Yelp
Ordered some tacos al vapor and they were gross. No flavor, meat was tough and difficult to chew.
google avatar

Jasmere C.

Yelp
AKA TacoBar , it's the top place for Tacos in the city IMO ! We go once or twice a week. They're devine and made with love. My bf who's not a fan of Al Pastor, always gets their Al Pastor tacos so they must be fire! I Al pastor pork is my favorite and they knock it out the park everytime. I love the Taqueros who slice the meat in front of you! Such a great experience, remember on Tuesdays 4 tacos get a free agua!! The staff is friendly and they recently upgraded the interior the vibes are back TLDR; MUST TRY IN SF 5

diewney n.

Yelp
Bomb cabeza tacos! Melt in your mouth like ox tail!!! Al pastor on point! Will definitely be back! Super burrito's are a good size and plenty flavor. Will Be back to try other tacos/items.

Darren L.

Yelp
Lady on phone rude as hell. Wont even let me order tacos on the phone. Said i have to in person. I dont know where you van find parking for 20 mins in sf without getting ticketed or towed. Managment needs to fix the know pick up order through phone issue. So dumb
google avatar

Michael E.

Yelp
Pretty solid taco spot. Good prices, very fast, friendly service. I liked both the chicken and al pastor.
google avatar

Steve W.

Yelp
Can't say enough good things about this place. A SF staple for the best super burrito. Always a great experience.
google avatar

Jackson P.

Yelp
We went to TV last Friday night after the SF Symphony. Great burrito! We split a pollo asada burrito. The chicken was perfect, and the green salsa that comes on the side was fantastic. Only negative is the chips, I don't think they make them, they are 'ok' not great but will suffice. Everything else is superb. We will return!
google avatar

Jaky Y.

Yelp
Tried their lengua taco and their neck taco, both of which were delicious, though the lengua stole the show by far. The lengua was well cooked, juicy, tender, and came in big cubes. Tacos are $4 each, which is a bit steep in my opinion, but their chips and salsa are only $1, so that helps offset the total bill a bit. When you get to Taqueria Vallarta, if you're looking for tacos, order directly with the person at the taco cart and then take your plate to the counter to pay.
google avatar

Zane T.

Yelp
Why are people coming here? the tacos are 4.00 double the price of taco trucks and the service is terrible when Guadalajara is down the street? This place sucks, price is double and terrible service. DO NOT COME HERE
google avatar

Drea R.

Yelp
Al pastor tacos are my fav, pricey but the place stays open late so good if you want good food late night, busy but still got my order pretty fast
google avatar

Mario M.

Yelp
Never in my whole miserable life have I ever been more offended by a taco. Ordered a plate full, of asada, Al pastor, chorizo, and suadero. The meat was overly salty but otherwise flavorless. The tortillas was soggy and also terrible flavor-wise. Also had the horchata which tasted overly sweet and one dimensional, a mass produced syrupy abomination. Didn't make make it through more then two bites before I tossed the whole plate which was painful because the entire order was almost $60. This meal was so bad I started a fight with my partner because I left hangry. Ended up going across the street to Vaca Birria for a decent taco, but the the damage was done.
google avatar

Vanessa P.

Yelp
If you're looking for legit tacos, this is definitely the place. I'm not an expert on mexican food, but I appreciate a good taco and these blew me away. They're made fresh to order and are steaming on the plate. Best of all, they're completely filled to the brim, so every bite is loaded with meat. The tacos are a little pricy (about $4 per taco), but they give such a good amount of food, I wasn't mad about it. I left Taqueria Vallarta feeling extremely satisfied and can't wait to go back!
