When I last came here, it was in the spring of 2018, and my visit was so-so at best. Fast forward to today - six years later - and it turned out the second time was the charm.
To think, as I was searching for a place in Downtown Galveston to have lunch so I could take the afternoon portion of my meds, this wasn't my first choice. Two of Taquilo's neighbors were closed because of Hurricane Beryl, so that was how pulled up into the former Stork Club.
I said in my last review that service was slow. Samesies today, but at least this time, there were plenty of storm weary islanders looking for respite and a hot meal. It was two-ish when I was here, so I helped myself to the Fiesta Plate, one of the lunch specials.
Well, well, well. I misjudged Taquilo's the first time. The size of the meal caught my eye; it was big enough for even two people. Presentation-wise, the kitchen put everything together nicely. The soft chicken taco, the crispy taco, the cheese enchilada, beans, and rice all made it feel like Dia de las Patrias (Mexico's Independence Day) on my taste buds. Sure enough, I was really satisfied with having chosen Taquilo's. I'm a fan of their crispy taco, by the way.
It's one of the best Mexican places on the island bar none.
