How to Spend 24 Lovely Hours in Leesburg, Virginia | Eater DC

"A moody speakeasy ideal for an excellent nightcap, with happy hour from 4 to 7 p.m.; we’re big fans of the clarified piña colada made with Gogo’s Gelato." - Lulu Chang

Such a cool place! The vibe is prohibition, dark and moody. The food is delicious. Great happy specials. The drinks are yummy! The bartender was awesome. We had the pork belly tacos, charcuterie, popcorn & caprese along with a Brambles cocktail and 2 Long Drinks. The prices were great! $75 for everything.

An absolute gem in Leesburg! My girlfriends and I went to Tarbender’s Lounge for the first time and had the best night. It’s this very cool little speakeasy tucked away in downtown Leesburg with such a fun, intimate vibe... low lighting, cozy corners, great music — the whole place just feels effortlessly stylish and welcoming. Even the small outdoor patio was just perfect! The food was delicious, the drinks were strong and well-made (definitely not watered down like other places), and the whole experience felt like a night out done right. The host/manager/owner (not sure which, maybe all three?) was so welcoming and made us feel right at home. And Tylor (sp?), our server, a total rockstar! So sweet, professional, and made us feel taken care of the entire night. Honestly one of the best servers we’ve had anywhere. We had such a great time we're already planning our next visit!

Google
Phenomenal experience. Great food and drinks! Super fun entrance via phone booth. Our waitress Tyler was incredible! She helped us create custom mocktails, let us move tables when the live music got a little too loud, and was super attentive & friendly. Truly the cherry on top!

Stumbled upon this gem of a place and it was just the best kind of surprise. This speakeasy is tucked away inside a gelato shop on a popular street of Leesburg downtown. The ambience is moody, dim yet charming. The menu is polished and the items seem delicious. The owner and also our bartender, Paul, was an amazing host and made us great cocktails. They take a lot of pride in making some of their own bitters and syrups from scratch and rightly so, because we loved their old fashions both off of the menu and Dealer’s Choice. Paul filled us in on all the events that take place there every week, and we’d definitely be back for Thursday Karaoke nights, brunch and dinner, all of it!

Tarbender's Lounge is a fun speakeasy with a lot to offer. The entrance being a phone booth is a perfect way to accent the fun environment inside. It is a busy place, so I recommend a reservation, though their reservation process on their website could use an upgrade. We arrived to find they had our reservation, but had overlooked it, so we had to wait for them to rearrange some tables. I will say after that, I felt the staff tried to make up for the rough start. Everyone we met was friendly and one of our servers showed me the Tiki room and discussed the history of the business. They also have a karaoke lounge in the front by the entrance. The drinks are great. The menu appears slightly limited, so don't be afraid to order off menu, based on your preferences. We tried several old fashioned. The chili dog is really good...better than I expected. The lobstah mac and cheese really has lobster in it. The prime rib was also delicious.

By far my favorite place in Virginia! As soon as you enter the phone booth (it’s a speakeasy) it feels like you’re entering a whole new world. Dimly lit and filled with antique decor reminiscent of prohibition times, you’d forget it was 2025. The cocktail menu has a little bit for everyone and they take no shortcuts. The bartender said they make all of their own ingredients from scratch which is a HUGE win for me! (I can’t stand “bars” that buy overly sweetened purées and sour mixes🤢) We split the wagyu burger and the prime rib special. Both were smashing, I probably could’ve eaten another round despite being so full already. Just perfect. The owner, Paul, is a stand up dude. He stopped by our table to check in on us and learned it was our first time there. He briefed us on all the fun events they have (live music every weekend and brunch coming soon!) and you could tell just by the way he talks, he pours his heart and soul into this place, a rare find these days. Tarbenders is my new go to spot, definitely going to be hosting my next event in the speakeasy!

Google
A Hidden Gem in Leesburg – Tarbender’s Lounge If you’re looking for a place in Leesburg that blends creativity, charm, and entertainment, Tarbender’s Lounge is it. The 4.8-star rating is absolutely well deserved—I’d even argue it could be higher. From the moment you walk in, it captures that speakeasy feel: cozy, stylish, and just buzzing with energy. We visited while in town for the weekend and had the chance to experience the best of both worlds—an evening of drinks and then their famous comedy brunch on Sunday. Both were unforgettable in their own way. Drinks & Atmosphere The cocktail program is outstanding. Each drink is crafted with care, balancing flavors perfectly, and the bar team clearly knows their craft. Special shoutout to bartender Tyler, who not only delivered fantastic cocktails but also added to the fun, welcoming vibe of the night. This is the kind of place where you’ll want to slowly savor each drink because it’s that good. Comedy Brunch Sunday’s comedy brunch turned out to be the highlight of our trip. It wasn’t just brunch with a side of jokes—it was a full-on experience. The comics kept the energy high, the room laughing nonstop, and the whole event felt incredibly well put together. One of the servers, also a comic, Ty nailed both roles. She had us laughing. Food & Service The food was another pleasant surprise—often at lounges or brunch shows you expect good drinks but just “okay” food. Not here. Everything we ordered came out flavorful, well-presented, and cooked to perfection. The kitchen clearly takes pride in what they serve. Pair that with attentive, friendly service across the board, and it made for a stress-free, enjoyable experience. The People What really sets Tarbender’s apart, though, is the people. From the staff to the comics to the owner himself, everyone we encountered was personable and genuinely seemed happy to be there. The owner chatted with us, and made sure we were having a great time—something you don’t see everywhere. That personal touch elevated the whole visit. Final Thoughts Tarbender’s Lounge is the kind of spot you wish you had in your own town—a place you’d keep coming back to whether it’s for a casual night out, a special occasion, or just to treat yourself to good food, drinks, and entertainment. Whether you’re local or just passing through Leesburg, do yourself a favor and make it a stop. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – Without a doubt, one of the best lounge and comedy experiences we’ve had in a long time.

Yelp
This place is super cute. I was told about it from the Martini's family when we meet at some work training. I decided to take my husband out on a date night. Getting to it was very easy, and people picked us off the street asking if we were looking for it and we said yes and they walked us right in before we even got to the door. I love that this place has a TRUE happy hour. Coinvent prices and nice drink options. I was the difficult child that wanted something not on menu but I gave a lot of leeway for the variation - just not the spirit. Was great! We had 2 drinks each and each ordered our own HH item for food fish tacos and a pep pizza. All of it was around $50 for everything. I am definitely planning another date night up this way specifically to come here again!

Yelp
A must experience secret gem in Leesburg! The food was delicious - highly recommend the popcorn and pork belly lettuce wraps. And save room for gelato! Loved the signature old fashioned, but loved even more that you could create your own. Fun! Shout out to all the staff, in particular Tylor who made the night even more enjoyable! Best service and welcoming atmosphere that I've experienced in the DMV!

Yelp
I went for happy hour! It was such a fun place. The storefront is now a gelato place, and then you get to walk through the telephone booth. It's dimly lit and a mix of casual + dress wear. They host a great food happy hour! We tried a little bit of everything - tacos, nachos, flat breads, and French dip! I really enjoyed the French dip, I haven't had one in ages! The flatbreads were good, I liked the margarita one the best. The nachos were definitely quality over quality. I was pleasantly surprised by them. One thing I think they're missing is - fries! But all the prices were great. We also had some beers, and wines - nothing too spectacular, I was disappointed that they didn't have any cocktails apart of it.

Yelp
I was looking for a nice bar to visit on a Saturday night in Leesburg. I'm not from the area, so I did a quick Google search -- they came up second, but honestly, they should be first! This place is a hidden gem. You might miss the entrance since it's tucked away near what looks like an office building, but once you walk in, you're greeted and guided right into the bar. The atmosphere was adorable -- intimate, cozy, and incredibly friendly. Everyone was so helpful with recommendations on both food and specialty drinks. Our waitress, Tyler, was an absolute ROCKSTAR! She went above and beyond, checked in on us consistently, and offered great suggestions. The wings were delicious -- and who would've thought you'd find amazing jerk chicken at a bar in Leesburg? Overall, definitely a great experience. I'll absolutely be visiting again!

Yelp
Excited to check out this unique speak-easy, was a lot of fun. You enter a "store front", sneak through the phone booth and enter a time of speak easies and good time bars. Several different rooms, small and cozy, nicely decorated. The cocktails are incredibly imaginative and well prepared by Andre. Very knowledgeable and friendly, can guide you thru the menu. Flatbreads were great, mahi tacos were so-so. Great prices during Happy Hour, will return soon.

Choco B.

Yelp
The whole "speakeasy" thing is a worn-out gimmick. "Check it out; we made the door hard to find!" It's a decent little place though. Cozy interior, with vibey dim lighting and a wooden bar. Great happy hour specials. Decent food. Quite slow service, but there was only one person tending both the (full) bar and (not at all full) dining room. If I were a local, I'd probably come back.

Kai M.

Yelp
French Dip was really good. Also, their karaoke nights are really fun . Need to work on those Yucca fries.

Yelp
Great bar and beverages. The bar tenders make excellent drinks. Great list bar with a cool speakeasy feel. Also the food is good as well.

Yelp
Birria pizza is a must have. Service and staff are tops. I would recommend for an evening out in Leesburg downtown district.

Yelp
This is a nice speakeasy located in a cute downtown area! The area itself looks instagramable, reminds me of Halloween town or something similar. The entrance is set up as if its a convenient store but when you enter the photobooth, all of the magic appears. Though the space appears small, it actually has ample seating. Considering it is a speakeasy, you won't expect it to be packed to capacity anyway. The bartenders were very nice and helpful considering my friend and I were visiting. They provided great recommendations of things to do and places to visit as well as great customer service. We got there just in time for the last hour of the happy hour and lets just say the drinks made me happy! Lol They also have a great food menu with things from birria tacos to burgers. I ordered the birria plate which came with two tacos and consome. I love a good birria and this was not what I expected. The taco itself was good but the consome could use more seasoning. Overall, Im glad my friend found this place and would recommend to anyone in the area.

Cristina Cici B.

Yelp
First timer. Have to admit, the Halloween decor made this place so awesome. I adore the fact that once you walk through the telephone booth you're inside what feels like a dirty little secret - except it's not dirty. Well, unless you're ordering a dirty martini off the cocktail menu and let me tell you, those are exceptionally filthy. 50% classy, until you reach the bottom half of the glass, then you realize just how drunk they get you. No half measures in this place! Service was a little slow, granted it was a Friday night past 10pm, but the staff were very pleasant. Worth getting a drink in here just for the ambiance alone.

Yelp
Everything!!!the service was exceptional and the live music and food were great ....,.

Yelp
We had a great time! The food, drinks, and vibe are great. Would recommend for a chill fun vibe.

Yelp
I recently had the pleasure of visiting Tarbender's Lounge and it exceeded all my expectations. This unassuming gem offers an exceptional experience. The unique dark ambiance to the wonderfully crafted cocktails, and happy hour, makes it a must-visit spot. The highlight was definitely the drinks, not to say the service or food was bad, both were great. However, the drinks are clearly made with passion and each different cocktail is a work of art.

Yelp
I've lived in the town of Leesburg for 20 years. Tarbender's is arguably my favorite place/bar. First off, the staff is amazing and friendly. They make you feel at home. The atmosphere and decor is great inside and out. The food is so good, anything you order is sure to be amazing, and they offer great cocktails, wine, and spirits. Get your *'* in here

Yelp
Creativity meets cocktail! Love the people, love the drinks. Paul loves to share the vision, whole Spencer crafts the flavors! Highly recommend and say hello!

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
Fun speakeasy vibe with good cocktails and fun karaoke on a Thursday night. Nice ambiance, dimly lit, nice people, good bartenders
google avatar

Yelp
Tarbender's lounge is a cute bar with good deals for the happy hour. It is not a romantic but it does evoke mysterious feeling. The staff is very kind and they try hard to satisfy the customers. This is a great meet up place with drinking and snacking. My $7 Cubans sandwich was ok. My $5 Malbec wine was good. The great atmosphere is really something special that induces good times. Fun place that I would like to visit again.

Beth G.

Yelp
Personally I think this place is overrated. When it first opened we decided to spend our New Year's Eve here. However, the staff and their friends were also there. They were loud and breaking ABC rules about drinking while working. A person was there doing "promotions" asked my sister if she wanted to do drugs with him. I went back several additional times trying to give it a second or 4th chance. But, none of the experiences have been good. Skip the "speakeasy" and go literally any other place in downtown Leesburg
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
This place is a 2 star at best. The drinks are pedestrian and the food is false advertising. For an average menu price of $10-$15 per drink I can hardly say the taste is worth the price and the presentation isn't much better. In terms of presentation of the food it looks great. But I would consider it false representation by the very least. The 4 inch lobster tail that was presented in the lobster Mac n cheese was empty and when searching throughout the Mac n cheese there was no lobster in sight. This was $17.50 btw even more expensive then the oyster bar option next door. On top of that the people inside didn't listen to the speak easy door rules and come in and out and are loud and obnoxious. This is a dive bar with just a peculiar door.

Francis M.

Yelp
We were greeted by a sweet lady with a super cool tattoo. She was friendly and polite gave my family a warm welcome. The service was impeccable and the food was delicious. Good quality and generous portions. This place is a true gem. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

DJ G.

Yelp
Interesting little spot. It doesn't seem like they have a niche. The whole Speakeasy thing was weird and the space after the telephone booth was weirder. It was cramped and sticky. It all felt forced. Lamb chop lollipops and truffle popcorn, but your employees have on awful pastel shirts and frat ties? I probably won't go back, but if you enjoy little odd spaces, go for it. Oh! Oh waitress was REALLY awesome :)
google avatar

Kevin S.

Yelp
A throw back into the time of speakeasy's and secret groups. Located in the downtown Leesburg beside of the OysterBar, this cool, eclectic place has a secret entrance, great drinks from skilled bartenders and vibe like none other. We went on 1st Friday and listened to amazing tunes from Sinatra, Dino, and other classics. This place is small but a 5-star winner!
google avatar

John J.

Yelp
So at first glance it seemed like a place to grab a quick drink and then move on to the next bar... Well, there was this super energetic bartender Paul, who started talking up the joint .... he talked about the food and drink specials.... and he was right the food was quite tasty ,,,, we ended staying and super glad we did ... the bar had a really a cool vibe ... a lot of locals but they seemed to welcome newcomers. Try the Lucille Ball and the Mozzarella fried cheese ...great apps If you're in the neighborhood... check it it out
google avatar

Rob B.

Yelp
This is a cool spot but it's definitely not what it could be. I stopped in twice and the first night there wasn't a person in there but the bartender was great and to be honest she is the only reason we had more than one drink and we stayed for a while. She was super cool and she played the music we liked and she talked up a storm. The owner strolled in shortly after and she introduced us to him but he didn't seem very interested in chatting. Huge mistake in my opinion. The second time we stopped in there was a DJ playing and it was sorta empty so we left. I hope this place makes the changes it needs to improve for the future. I'll give them four stars because of the bartender but if not for her I'd give this place two stars.
google avatar

Ed L.

Yelp
My daughter asked me for the name of a couple places to have a small birthday party where they could be out celebrating but still be with each other. I told her that Tarbender's would be perfect. She called and spoke to Paul who made all the arrangements for her. She loved the place and had the best time ever!
google avatar

Matt D.

Yelp
Had the tapas (multiple items), had the brews, had the mixed drinks, and flat out had a great time! The live music was excellent, a collection of old Frank Sinatra and other old crooner hits. Staff was awesome and engaging as well! Crowd was relaxed and having fun you could tell, Try it!

Yelp
Stopped in before a show Tally Ho Theater. Food and service were on point. Will definitely return.

Girl With Two Forks And A Knife -.

Yelp
'Twas ok. I think I'm so used to sleek city bars and eclectic speakeasies that Tarbender but this place is well lit and has a college town-frat boy feel to it.
google avatar

Yelp
It is exactly where you want to be at that moment. The owners have authentically created an atmosphere from the heart. Let me try to do this place justice with a description: * Decor - geometric, Art Deco inspired, patterns adorn the walls and ceiling - a large mural, across two walls, I'd described as an expression of passion that teases reminders of debauchery and fun - outdoor seating - time travel opportunities back a speak easy (hidden side bars and secret entrances) * Vibe - live music; jazz to salsa and DJs - bartenders and staff anticipating what can be done to elevate a guest's experience * Food/drinks - small but mighty menu featuring yummy soul warming options. From prime rib to flatbreads - unpretentious great cocktail options

Yelp
Such a fun bar to come for girls night or to spend brunch at! Paul is the funniest dude and has great hospitality. The bartender Lindsay is great! Very attentive & quick with drinks!!
google avatar

Hans S.

Yelp
Such a cool spot. It has a Lower-East-Side-style speak easy in the back and a small patio that is PERFECT for a small 10-20 person Birthday Day-Drinking event. The owner Paul and his GF, Lindsay who works the bar are the friendliest, most professional staff EVER The implement safe policies for covid and they just started doing brunch again!

B P.

Yelp
If you want a high end but non pretentious craft cocktails this is the go to place. Awesome vibe and great bar both in quality of food and nice people/music. Wife and I have lived in Leesburg (previously Arlington) and this easily rivals bars in DC, but way more authentic. Can't wait to go back again.
google avatar

Whitney R.

Yelp
We heard Tarbender's under new ownership, so we figured we'd give it another shot. We actually did get served this time and in a timely manner. Pros: Both the drink menu and food menu is completely revamped and looks great. It has a tiki bar type theme and funny names for the signature cocktails. One of the servers we had was such a sweetheart. Keep hiring people like her. Cons: customer service, at least at night, still needs to be vastly improved. You don't know who your actual server is. One of the girls behind the bar who was also serving us (you never know who your actual server is), seemed extremely unprofessional. She was too worried about being the center of attention than making drinks and checking on customers. What really got me was when my boyfriend had to ask for the check all the while said bartender is yelling across the room and asking what table we were at and what we had to drink. I'm assuming no one rang it in. The interior is a hot mess. It has like 5 different themes going on. My biggest tip of advice is to not have killer wales eating seals on a Saturday night on the television. Not exactly a good vibe.
google avatar

Christy M.

Yelp
We came here for cocktails and a snack after our server at an earlier restaurant recommended we go here. We loved this place. Delicious cocktails, tasty apps, cool vibe, friendly service...can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Always great food, drinks, service and atmosphere. I love that they rotate/update their menu.

I absolutely love this place, service is outstanding, food is amazing and drinks are on point!!

Yelp
This place always has amazing food and their staff has excellent customer service! Their fish tacos are super tasty and fresh. We have also had their wings, brisket and prime rib sliders, margherita flatbread, short rib poutine, all very tasty!! This place never disappoints! Love the vibe and atmosphere!

Yelp
Great atmosphere and a good pour. Will definitely be going back regularly! Great service and a lot of fun.

Yelp
Absolutely awesome. Best martinis, artisan cocktails and food was amazing. Such a cool spot to go to enjoy the closest thing to a 'bar' I've been to since COVID.

Donna F.

Yelp
Looking forward to a fun night with Crimsyn and Logan! Drag soirée!! Let the fun and games begin!

Yelp
Amazing spot! Shocked that we didn't discover this place sooner. Great atmosphere, experienced bar staff, and solid drinks!

Yelp
By far the best restaurant/bar in Leesburg by far! The best part of Tarbenders is there food and service. Every time you show up, it's a greeting at the door and a server immediately. Very friendly staff and great owner! Best bartender I would have to say is Lindsay. Will definitely be coming back for a long time.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
My wife and I love this place. Some of the best cocktails and food around! I got a flying ace old fashion and it was absolutely amazing
google avatar

Catherine T.

Yelp
We had a girls night out in downtown Leesburg. We chose the new bar Tarbenders because we've heard good things. We were not disappointed. The service was excellent. Friendly staff and very attentive. The drinks were uniquely flavored (in a good way) and priced reasonably. The bar was cool and hiply decorated like a 1920s Speakeasy. We had a nice time. It's close to the parking garage. Give it a try. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Justin S.

Yelp
They stole from me. Be careful going here because the server's may decide to give themselves whatever tip amount they like. There is limited seating and it is not clear where the entrance and exits are. Overall, unhappy with my experience here.
google avatar

Christina W.

Yelp
Shockingly good food. Went here to try the Ultimate Bloody Mary that another Yelper posted a picture of, but unfortunately they don't offer it anymore. One of the owners, Paul, even came out to apologize when he heard we came specially to try that drink. We weren't going to stay originally, but the customer service was excellent. The jalepeno Old Bay Bloody Marys and the Cubano were delicious, but the tater tot poutine stole the show. In house smoked pork that was not too salty or over sauced, and the tater tots were fried perfectly. It was a pretty sizeable portion, but didn't leave you feeling greasy or with heartburn. Would come back just for this.

Yelp
Absolutely love Tarbenders one of me and my husband's favorite date night places to go. Great atmosphere, great food, Great employees!! Just everything about this place is amazing. Definitely highly recommend checking it out. Promise you won't regret it.
