The Best Guinness Cakes In London

"Looking back at our initial notes about Tarn Bakery is like reading the rantings of someone who’s seen the light. “Actually tastes of Guinness”—followed by three exclamation marks—then words like “malty” and “moist”, and an ominous final scrawl of, “I think this is it”. The Guinness cake from this Crouch Hill spot is unlike any of the others on this list. The topping is a combination of sour cream and crème fraîche which gives it a nice tang, there’s a sweet-smoky whiskey caramel drizzle, and, crucially, there’s a double layer of buttercream. It’s intensely Guinnessy, intensely chocolatey, and we have intensely strong feelings about it. " - sinead cranna

The 19 Best Bakeries In London

"For: Guinness cake We’ve made repeat pilgrimages, panting all the way up the hill, to this tiny Highgate bakery for their Guinness cake—we particularly love the tangy sour cream and crème fraîche topping. But you should also get involved in the flaky, creative pastries that come topped with things like rhubarb compote, ginger custard, and grapefruit glaze. We can’t think of many better ways to start the day than perching on one of Tarn’s two wooden tables, clasping an earthenware mug of coffee, and staring out of the windows like the main character of some north London-based indie film. Tarn Bakery Review - Highgate - London - The Infatuation

"We’ve made repeat pilgrimages, panting all the way up the hill, to this tiny Highgate bakery for their Guinness cake. And that is how we know we love Tarn Bakery. The literal legwork needed to get here is always worth it. Flaky, creative pastries come topped with things like rhubarb compote, ginger custard, and grapefruit glaze, and the aforementioned Guinness cake is one of the best in London—we particularly love the tangy sour cream and crème fraîche topping. We can’t think of many better ways to start the day than perching on one of the two wooden tables here, clasping an earthenware mug of coffee, and staring out of the windows like the main character of some North London-based indie film. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch" - Sinéad Cranna

Best almond (and almond & chocolate) croissants either of us have ever had. You can taste and see the quality of the ingredients and baking skill that go into these beautiful pastries! Long black coffee also a big hit! Can’t wait to come back to taste more of what this friendly team have on offer 👌

Lovely chic café with delightful in-house baked goods. Aubergine scroll was so tasty, caramelisation of the aubergine with great amount of cheese. I didn't quite know what to expect from the honey and peach (cake) but it was soft, not dry at all and burst with summery flavour. Lovely staff and coffee too

Utterly superb. Great service, and delicious coffee served in beautiful mugware. We got the tiramisu bun which was doughy and not too sweet. The Guinness cake definitely had an ample amount of the black stuff in it. The best purchase overall was the seeded sourdough……. Quite possibly the best bread I have ever purchased.

I’ve had the pain au chocolat here, and it was one of the best I’ve ever tried. The mushroom toast is amazing, and the coffee is brilliant — rich and flavorful. The staff are friendly and welcoming, which makes the experience even better. Highly recommend this spot!

Awesome bakery, totally recommended almond croissant (and its variations). Great atmosphere, and from terrace you can see beautiful skyline.

Croissant and cheese scroll was super delicious, kids named it the best croissant in London. Honey cake was good. We had flat white and mocha which was good but not to our taste and they don’t have skimmed milk option. Even the shop was busy but the staff were super nice, polite and welcoming which not easy to see in London specially if you are not regular, but customer service her was really good. My only regret that I didn’t buy bread. Definitely will go back again.

I had the Pain Au Pear to go. It was buttery soft and tasty to eat on their rainy morning in London. Good number of options for this small bakery up a hill and around the corner. Would come back to try other stuff.

Delicious flat white, amazing croissant. Mushroom toastie was also super yum. Small indoor seating with room for about few. Definitely worth the visit!
