3 Best Day Trips from Melbourne to Mornington Peninsula, Daylesford, and the Yarra Valley | Condé Nast Traveler

"There’s a definite wow factor at play here. TarraWarra’s cellar door is built into the side of a hill, and visitors enter through a heavy wooden door that is part of a curved rock wall. Architect Kerstin Thompson was tasked with creating a subterranean European-style cellar, and she’s certainly achieved that. Polished concrete floors, textured concrete walls and ceiling, a solid bar and furniture created from recycled timber, and circular skylights letting in sunshine all combine to achieve a contemporary space. The cellar door sits on a thousand acres of prime Yarra Valley farmland and vineyards. There are 28 blocks planted with cool-climate grapes, including chardonnay and pinot noir—this region’s stars—as well as shiraz, merlot, and more. Take part in a tasting, then choose your favorite." - Carrie Hutchinson

Absolutely phenomenal dining experience! From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed with warmth and genuine hospitality. The atmosphere was inviting and beautifully set, creating the perfect ambiance for an unforgettable meal. The food? Simply outstanding. Every dish was crafted with precision and bursting with flavor, showcasing the chef’s undeniable talent and passion. The attention to detail was remarkable, and each bite was better than the last. The wine pairings were spot on, thoughtfully selected to complement each course perfectly, elevating the entire experience. And the service? Beyond exceptional. Every staff member went above and beyond to ensure we had an incredible evening, making us feel valued and truly taken care of. If you’re looking for a place that delivers excellence in every aspect, this is it. Can’t wait to return!

Visited on 12 August. One of the most disappointing tasting experiences. We’ve done tastings at a number of cellar doors around Yarra and have met wonderful sommeliers. But the one at Tarrawarra was a huge letdown. Didn’t get the sommerlier’s name but he was just giving us his bare minimal and felt like we were rushed to finish. It was a real pity as the place is gorgeous. But the experience left a real bad aftertaste.

The food and service were absolutely exceptional. Could not fault it. We chose a 4 course menu with wine pairings. Will be going back soon. Thank you chef for a great experience.

What an incredible experience. Six of us went to celebrate our sons graduation and when the staff found out we were there to celebrate they went above and beyond our expectations. What a privilege it was for us to have such a professional and friendly group of staff looking after us. Would recommend the restaurant to anyone. The food was incredible and the chef was so accommodating of dietary requirements. Thank you everyone for making our day such a memorable experience

Yelp
The combination of wine and art is always good, and it's done exceptionally well here at Tarrawarra! The tasting provided us with some good insight on grapes that grow well in the area, and we got to try a variety of whites and reds. It was also nice to visit the barrel room, and the tasting area itself is a sleek work of art. The gallery at the time had an artist that had morphed figures of quasi-humanoids, and it was interesting and strange all at the same time. The property that this is set on is unbelievably beautiful as well. Definitely worth the drive from Melbourne!

Yelp
Out for a weekend in the Yarra Valley to wine taste at a couple of the local wineries. Our first stop is Tarrawarra Estates. We viewed the Archibald prize winners and I included a few of my favorite pictures. The winery is very nice and the views are lovely.

Yelp
A picturesque winery not to be missed when visiting the Yarra Valley. The architecture of the main buildings which house the Tarrawarra Museum of Art as well as the restaurant, is simplistic yet bold and stunning. Definitely a place that photographers and instagrammers would love. The cellar door entrance is carved nonchalantly into the side of a hill, and when it's automatic doors open, it's as if you're entering another dimension of cool. Tastings are $5 pp for 5 varieties, a menu is available on the counter. A floor to ceiling glass wall separates the tasting room from the actual cellar where the oak barrels are stored. If you're lucky and the wine maker is available, you may be able to enter their domain, where the magic happens. Though I personally think there is magic everywhere you go - being able to bask in the beauty of vineyards from the restaurant deck, protected from the sun by natural shade from the trees, watching the still silence of nature.. only one word springs to mind. Heavenly! *sigh* Do visit the museum, even if you're not a huge fan of art, it's very peaceful inside and the clever use of space and lighting creates a beautiful backdrop for your own artistic photos.

Yelp
What the restaurant lacks it certainly makes up for in service and the venue itself. Food was great!! But compared to eg neighbouring betoli?? my opinion only. the salmon was awesome but the choice of pickled cucumber I would question. Understand the chefs intention and know where his/she's going w/ this but it was wrong! Why not try using finger lime on something else basic like sweet potatoes. The steak although tasted great came out medium instead of medium rare. Won't hold that against them. Still went down the same way besides that looooved it! Oh almost forgot the entrees we had!! Mediterranean Mezze w/ spicy olives and dip! Pretty darn gd! Loved the spicy olives. Wasn't too keen on the comin fused nuts. The asparagus with churos n sweat potatoe! Equilateral gd. Asparagus was grilled in olive oil and had that charred taste! Yum! Anyway time for a Nani nap now after a very relaxing drive into the valley n back w/ a full stomach. Happy yelping y'all!!

Yelp
Tarrawarra Estate is one of the Yarra Valley's most beautiful vineyards, sitting atop one of the area's gently undulating hills and encompassing an art gallery and restaurant as well as offering tastings, talks and events year round. Overwhelmingly beautiful without being intimidating, I visited Tarrawarra for a tasting earlier this year and found its staff helpful, polite and not at all fussed that I intended to try each and every wine on the tasting menu before committing to buy. Which I did. To delicious excess. Tarrawarra is particularly well known for its incredible Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays - so make sure you try these if you stop by for a visit - and the restaurant boasts a glamorous but laid back atmosphere which is delightfully at odds with what can be the sometimes stuffiness of this gorgeous area.

Yelp
Tarra Warra is a hugely impressive winery with incredible views and a stunning art gallery. We were lucky enough to visit during the Archibald Prize. For anyone that doesn't know, that is the prize for painting the best portrait of an Australian figurehead. The exhibition as you'd expect was fantastic with a huge array of artists and well-known faces on display. Our little mosey on into the wine tasting room was less enjoyable however. We maybe did look a little rough having cycled to the winery but even so you wouldn't expect someone to be really strict on the number of wines you are allowed to taste and how expensive the wines you taste are. The gentleman who served only started being nice to us on the tasting floor once we'd expressed our desire to buy some wine. It seemed the only way for him to let us try more of their expensive range. We bought a bottle but were less than impressed by the service and the quality of the wines. I'd give the art gallery 5 stars but the winery would perhaps get a 2 or 3.

Yelp
Tarra Warra may not have the most expansive cellar door in the Yarra Valley, but it certainly has one of the best views. The cellar door looks out across an expanse of vines and the rolling valleys of Yarra. I also think that they have some of the best tasting wines. This is because I am a massive Pinot Noir fan and this is the grape they grow best. You will find Tarra Warra situated at the end of a long driveway at the top of the hill. There is also a restaurant and an art gallery, as well as a small range of wines to try. They aren't one of the biggest wineries, so don't get too busy. But if they are you can always go check out the gallery in the adjacent building while you wait for things to quieten down.

Yelp
TarraWarra is one of the most beautiful wineries I have been to so far. It sits on top of a hill and over looks its vast land and surrounding vineyards. As soon as you drive into the estate you immediately know you're in for a treat. Trees act as a frame on either side of the road as you drive up to a large parking area. Here there are two buildings with the most stunning and appeasing architecture, one is the TarraWarra art gallery, and the other is their restaurant. I have eaten here a few times and always find it a delight, probably because of the whole design of the place and the giant windows overlooking the landscape. Their food is of good quality and tasty, each waiter has excellent knowledge of wine and is able to recommend the best glass for your meal. It offers outdoor seating, and you are able to wonder their land freely. This is definitely a perfect Sunday lunch location for a special occasion.
