The Indisputable, Tastiest Pastries in Philly

"Old City’s long-standing pastry shop is known for delighting customers with its wide selection of tarts, cakes, and cookies that regularly change. A favorite of frequent patrons are the financiers, petite almond cakes traditionally made with brown butter, which receive a special touch through the addition of seasonal fruit." - George Banks-Weston

Yelp
Wow, this spot is so unassuming, it's just a small window on the side of the street in Old City, but their pastries are delicious! The staff is extremely friendly. The chocolate creme brulee was my favorite, so decadent and chocolatey without being too sweet. The apple raspberry tart was fruity and sweet. The chocolate chip pecan cookie was also amazing! I'd definitely recommend stopping for a bite if you have a sweet tooth.

Yelp
Ordered the chocolate creme brulee on 3/13 in the afternoon. Service was quick. No wait outside. Chocolate Creme Brulee tasted delicious, but in my opinion it was a little too sweet. The cream really helped balance the sweetness with the chocolate tart.

Yelp
The Pastries were delicious. Very small shop, you male your purchase through a window, but that's all that's needed. The cashier was very nice and held a conversation during the purchase. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
Lived in the neighborhood for so long and didn't even know about Tartes. I noticed this pastel pink facade during one of my walks around town andit immediately called me. I got the Pear Pistachio and Bourbon Pecan Tarts. The custard was soft, not too sweet and the outside pastry base was quite delicious and buttery. They have a bunch of pastries in the window to select and service is super quick. I think it would make a wonderful place to grab some baked goods for a road trip.

Yelp
I passed by Tartes so often and always wanted to try this pastry place. I finally had a chance to stop by. You order through their window, and you can see what pastries are available being displayed in their window. The service was nice and efficient. We ordered mini lemon pound cake, and peach blackberry financiers. Both cakes were moist, not too sweet, and very delicious! You can taste the rich butter flavour which was so nice. I will definitely be back to try their other pastries.

Yelp
Cute little walk up window to such delicate sweet treats. We got the pistachio pear tart, apple tart and chocolate chip cookie. All were very yummy. The tarts were especially good because of its flakiness and the fruit on the tart was not too sweet. I plan to go back for some canele's!

Yelp
Finally stopped by this adorable pastry shop I've passed a million times and I must say I regret not stopping by sooner! I had the bourbon pecan tart, a pear pistachio tart, and a lemon bar. Each treat was scrumptious, but the tarts really stole the show. It was just buttery goodness! If you're a pastry lover, you really need to try their tarts.

Yelp
When I tell you that was the best snickerdoodle cookie I ever had, believe me!! Not overly sweet, soft middle, crispy edge. I would love to connect for some cookie for our wedding! I wish they made donuts!!!

Yelp
I'm not a big fan or tart person (more a croissant person), BUT this tart is the BEST tart I've ever had in Philly (and my life)!!! This is how their tarts are good Food: the crust is so perfectly balanced between buttery crumbled & moist. Filling was so fresh that they definitely used the fresh peach. I was so impressed that they sweetened it on point that I can give them the perfect complement an Asian could say to a dessert: "It's not that sweet!" I'm 3000% sure will be back to here to try out their every single tart they bake!! Service: the front cashier lady was really nice to explain the flavors for a first timer like me :) Vibes: this is a dessert shop that you can't sit down/dine-in, it's a grab-go & enjoying your sweets at home/park for picnic events.

Yelp
Stopped by this yummy little bakery while I was in town just walking around. The blueberry lemon tarte and brownie that I got were absolutely delicious. So glad I stumbled upon it!

Yelp
FOOD We ordered the chocolate creme brûlée and apple raspberry tart. Both were absolutely delicious-- the creme brûlée wasn't too sweet nor dry (the creme added the perfect amount of moisture to the dryer tart base). The chocolate topping was sweet and chocolatey and offered a nice change in texture from the cream and base. As for the apple raspberry tart, the fruit was refreshing and marinated with a wonderful cinnamon spice blend. It also wasn't too sweet or dry, though my only complaint is that I didn't really taste or see any raspberry in the tart. It was good, but I might have just marketed the item as an apple tart instead. SERVICE Service was standard, and the staff was accommodating when we asked for no nuts for our tart topping (due to allergies). AMBIANCE The shop is grab-and-go, as you order and receive your items via window. Nevertheless, it offers a vintage vibe in the Old City neighborhood and is a staple in the area. PARKING Paid street parking is available at a limited capacity.

Yelp
Impeccable desserts for any occasion. Love their seasonal and classic assortment & different sizes on offer. Anything from a bite sized snack to perfect dinner party sweet. Don't be disappointed if they run out of something, you can't go wrong here. It's all good!

Yelp
FOOD: 5 stars, it's adorable all tastes amazing and I genuinely look forward to when I can stop by. I have brought family and friends to come visit and we all love it. SERVICE: Rude, today the lady rolled her eyes at me twice ? And loudly sighed when I asked if I can order 4 of the same thing and asked for a second bag. Keep in mind, I was the only one in line so I'm not sure what the issue was and I still tipped ... Overall it's worth checking out but left feeling disappointed.

Yelp
Very nice lil bakery with tarts, cookies, and other small treats. A little pricey but everything has been phenomenal that I've tried so it's worth it! They're always busy baking delicious things, and you can order ahead of time as well. Tarts are delicious, definitely try some of their various choices. Lots of things sold out later in the day. Very friendly people at the window as well. Good all around experience.

Yelp
It's a nice little bakery. Pleasant people. Clean atmosphere. I enjoy stopping by and picking up some goodie's.

Yelp
Really cute hole in the wall. Due to the fact that the outside of this shop is pink and there is a long line, it's really hard to miss this place. They have a lot of options and they offer pick up options on Wed-Friday 4-6pm and Saturday 12-6pm and on Saturday 12-6pm, they offer window service. The people here were super friendly and efficient so we didn't have to wait too long in the cold. I recommend pear pistachio tarte and apple crumb, they're hard yet soft and full of flavor! To those of you that are visiting the are or elfreths alley, definitely stop by and try this place out!

Yelp
In my elusive hunt for the perfect bourban pecan pie, I came across this pastry shop many moons ago and I have been a convert ever since. Everything here is a little pricey, but definitely worth it. You can see all the love and attention in each and every hand-baked item. Sadly, the pecan pies were all sold out (this happened only once before in my couple dozen times I've been here), so I went out of my comfort zone and got the raspberry almond tart (see picture). I didn't like it as much as the pecan pie, but don't take that as criticism. That's like me saying I prefer BMWs over Audis and Mercedes. Every tart here is delicious. Try one. You'll be a convert, too. I hear they have canelés on select days, so I'm going to try one of theirs sometime.

Yelp
The tarts were delicious and a quick easy treat to get at the window! I got the blueberry lemon and yummm so good. They're a little pricey but so pretty and we'll made

Yelp
Such a cute little spot! Pasties are absolutely beautiful. They're seriously a work of art - almost too pretty to eat! This sweet little shop, located in Olde City, is take out only. You can preorder or walk up to the window to get your treats, but I highly recommend ordering ahead if possible. I like the lavender pound cake and the chocolate crème brûlée tart the best, but all were excellent. The tartes are not overly sweet and you can tell everything is made with high quality ingredients.

Lindsay S.

Yelp
This is my absolute favorite bakery in philly!!! The chocolate creme brulee is the most delicious thing I have ever tasted in my life, it's like the inside of a creme brulee with the outside of a chocolate tarte type thing and I get one every time I go. It's just a small little window that you walk up to and they have soo many good treats. All the fruit tarts are amazing as well. Lemon bars and brownies are also delicious. Really can't go wrong here, everything is amazing and I dream about it on the daily.

Yelp
Pecan pie OMG!!! It took me back to one I had in South Africa Cape Town!!! Cute little place near grossman furniture.

Di S.

Yelp
Pistachio/pear tart (4 in) + Belgian chocolate cake (dark chocolate-ish). Delicious, will come back in future (the creme brûlée?). I appreciate the mini-sizes.

Yelp
Amazing. You must go here if you love pastry. Maybe the best bakery I have ever been to.

Yelp
Tartes is aptly named, for sure. We haven't tried all of their pastries, but as far as the tarts go, they've nailed every one! Perfect crusts-to-filling ratios (especially on the large ones) that surprisingly never seem to break. I'm so confident in the crusts that I usually just hold them in my hand and crush it like a doughnut (classy, I know!). There are plenty of places around to get pastries, and some are making excellent tarts, but Tartes might be the best, and certainly the most consistent, if you're on a mission for a great tart. The coconut cream is probably my favorite, but it's not always available (Fridays & Saturdays only). The bourbon pecan is essentially a perfect mini pecan pie. The key lime tart is also a winner. Their hours (closing at 6) have kept us from being able to enjoy Tartes even more, but when we do get there in time, we're always happy we made it!

Yelp
I came upon this shop while looking for dessert to serve at a Saturday night dinner party. The little carry out window is cute but the service very slow, so be prepared to wait. Also be prepared to pay quite a lot for these petite treats. I spent around $55 for 12 tiny tarts- 1/3 chocolate, 1/3 apple, 1/3 lemon meringue. Over the next several days I tried all 3 types. The lemon meringue, usually my favorite, left me cold. A waste of money, I thought. But my goodness, the chocolate and apple tarts are amazing! The chocolate is creamy inside and every single bite made me smile. The apple tart, eaten 4 days after purchase, was perfectly flaky and not too sweet. So, if you can afford the money and time, go ahead and enjoy.

Yelp
This spot was recommended by a tour guide and a friend from Philly. I am so happy I went! They close at 5 or 6 most days but going that late means limited options in pastry. It doesn't mean limited flavor though. When we stopped by they had a pear and pistachio tart or pecan pie left so we got the larger versions of both. They were so delicious!! The crust on both was buttery and flakey. The pecan pie had a solid filling that wasn't super sweet. The pear tart was a perfect blend of sweet and sour, again not overly sweet. The added pistachio nuts along the edge gave a nice even crunch with every bite. I wish I had gotten more to take home because I already want more. I definitely recommend stopping by Tartes and getting a pastry or two or three!

Yelp
Can't believe I never tried this place before. Had heard such good things and then stumbled upon it while in the neighborhood and just HAD to partake. This lemon bar pretty much changed my life. I'm fully addicted now and must go back as soon as possible! The namesake tartes are also wonderful and so adorably tiny!
google avatar

Yelp
Tartes is a cute little bakery in Old City with the delicious treats including tarts, cookies, brownies, and canneles. The cashier in the front is a kind lady who is always attentive and open to helping. I have tried their cannele and various Tartes including the chocolate crème brûlée, bourbon pecan, and lemon meringue. All of them were delicious with a crunchy, buttery base and creamy, smooth fillings bursting with flavor.

Jane B.

Yelp
Consistently outstanding baked goods. Hands off the last lavender pound cake! It's MINE!!
google avatar

Michael A.

Yelp
Pastry shop specializing in Tartes. Less sweet than I would've expected so keep that in mind, but nice presentation and many options to choose from, you can't go wrong, but the chocolate was a particular favorite
google avatar

Retna S.

Yelp
Very delicious tartes, buttery crust and smooth custard fillings with fresh fruit on top. You can have in bite size or full size. The chocolate covered brûlée is so smooth and not overly sweet Canele is ok. It's missing the citrusy taste.
google avatar

Yelp
The best in the city. Always fresh, small batches and delicious. No two items available taste alike. There is nothing commercial about this place, taste and texture are on point. Their prices are fair and their staff are polite and knowledgeable about their products. Stop by their window on your way anywhere and your friends will be delighted with the goodies!

Sandrine L.

Yelp
I'm French so I'm very picky when it comes to pastries because my standards are pretty high. I loved this place so much and everything we ordered. The hazelnut one was delicious ! We shall return, 100% do over. Thank you!
google avatar

Song P.

Yelp
Love their tarts! The lavender cake is also my fav. One downside is that they are kind of overpriced. The tiny size tarts are $4-5, and the pound cake, which is for one person, is $7.50. Other than the prices, I love their pastries.
google avatar

Adam S.

Yelp
A jewel box of an establishment in every sense of the word. The store may be small, but it packs a big punch when turning out their delicious, ornate, and mostly tiny treats. I'm still working my way through their menu but so far everything I've tried has been sensational. From bourbon pecan to coconut custard tarts, they are all great. They also make highly rated cookies and other treats. Their chocolate chip pecan cookie was even rated as one of the top 25 cookies in America by food and wine magazine. Long review short - five stars, highly recommend.
google avatar

Suji K.

Yelp
There's not a lot to say except: every tart created here is near perfect, and obviously with love. Always check out what the current seasonal fruit tart is. I can't speak of the other sweets except the canelés, which are nice for a small sweet bite- always caramelized crisp chewy outside, soft inside. A nice place to stop by on your way out of Olde City -- how could you not love attending a takeout window on a tiny pink building? *credit minimum

Yelp
This place looked so adorable and smelled so good that we had to stop by despite the fact that we just bought a bunch of macarons from ICE. It is super tiny. You just walk up to the window and order what you want from the sign. They have baked goods in the window that you can see. The woman working at the counter was extremely nice. The pastries were pretty underwhelming. They didn't taste nearly as good as they smelled. We got one sugar cookie and one chocolate chip pecan cookie. The chocolate chip pecan cookie desperately needed more chocolate chips. Stop by if you want. I wouldn't say I recommend it. It wasn't terrible but it's pricy for something that's just ok. I would definitely go for some macarons before returning here.

Yelp
Wow, this place is amazing! Outside of France, Switzerland, Germany, and Austria, I have not tasted such amazing European-style tarts. The style is not finicky or over the top, but simple and beautiful. The peach and blackberry tart is a fantastic summer dessert to have, with a delicious buttery crust and deliciously baked peach slices and blackberries for every bite. They really know what they're doing. I've known this bakery existed for a while, but was never able to make it here during their open hours. They open after I get into work and close before I get out, and it's tough for me to discover all the gems hiding in plain sight on just Saturdays. However, there is definitely a shortage of delicious pastries in Philadelphia and now that I've tried them, I can safely add them to my list of go-to places for a pastry-fix.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is a super small, no seating tart stand in one of my favorite areas of the city that cranks out some of the most delicious desserts you've ever tried. This place only has a walk up counter where you can get desserts to go - they have a variety of different types of Tartes (small and large) as well as some cookies and a few other pastries. Admittedly, I was a little intimidated by the kind of high price for a large tart ($7) but decided to go for it. We got a large apricot pistachio tarte and a small coconut cream tarte. After tasting these golden crusty circles of pure joy I had absolutely no regrets - these are perhaps the most delicious tarts I've ever had and quite certainly worth the it! I think the coconut cream edged out the apricot pistachio for me but I'm a coconut-ty kinda guy so take that with a grain of salt. 100% gunna go back to explore the rest that they have to offer. $10 minimum to use credit card and limited seating (a few sparse tables and chairs) on the street for this place. Come try it, especially if you want some baked goods to take home and impress people with!

Yelp
Super glad that I found this bakery shop because I enjoyed every single item! I was looking forward to the Key Lime Tarte the most, but my favorite was the Raspberry Almond Tarte (perfect amount of sweet and nutty). All the tarts weren't overwhelmingly sweet and tasted delicious!
google avatar

Joanne H.

Yelp
i can NEVER get enough of this place!!! it makes your morning coffee a whole new experience with any one of their tarts. i absolutely love any of the thicker, denser, sweeter tarts like chocolate or pecan, but my roommates adore the lighter, fluffier options like key lime! you honestly can't go wrong with any of them - but you must have them with coffee!
google avatar

Angela L.

Yelp
I followed my nose trailing the irresistible aroma of fresh baked goods in Old City and stumbled upon Tartes- what a gem! Their menu changes from day to day, fresh baked for customers. *There is NO DINING in, but there are chairs and tables outside the tiny store. * $15 credit card minimum Must try: - pear pistachio - chocolate creme brûlée tart (delicious creme at the center, not too sweet, with decadent chocolate as the outer tart) - apple pie (classic!) Wish I could have given this place a 5, but the lady behind the counter was not the friendliest.
google avatar

Esmahan A.

Yelp
This is some legit baked goods. I ordered the coconut tart with buttercream whipped cream (freshly placed) with toasted shredded coconut on it. Also, I got a pecan tart and a snicker doodle cookie for my son. Omg the crumb portion of both tarts are sweet crack. So good, the buttercream I can eat with a spoon for bfast, lunch and dinner.. The snicker doodle cookie... Well my teen son took it to his room and shut the door so maybe I'll Ask him tomorrow. What's annoying is that I had to order from a window like an ice cream truck. I want to smell all the baked goods inside a store so this was a bummer
google avatar

Mike Z.

Yelp
Continuin to support local community. Ordered 2 tarts . Key lime tart for the wife and chocolate creme brule for me. Both were delicious with a cup of tea.

Jean S.

Yelp
The most delicious homemade pastries ever !! Chocolate Crème Brûlée Tartes are to die for!! Just to mention one! Anything you buy your taste buds will thank you. You most certainly will enjoy!!

Yelp
Pastries are pretty decent. I've been here about once a week since I moved to old city, a year and a half ago. As someone who has been in the restaurant business for 21 years, I find it absolutely amazing that the staff can be so miserable doing something they [should] love. Delivering happiness through baked goods. Every single person I've encountered in a year and a half of weekly visits, has been MISERABLE. Today was my last visit. Pastries are easy to come by in Philadelphia, I don't need to give my money to someone who takes it with disdain and disgust. Like I'm bothering them by patronizing their business. Disgusting. Tips to the employees and the owner- if you don't like your job- LEAVE IT. You're an adult, you make your own life decisions. The restaurant business consists of 1. people telling you what they want, 2. You getting it 3. Them giving you their money and 4.making sure they have a nice experience. EASY. I'll miss your coconut tarts. Big time. But, seriously... life is hard enough. Why deliver delicious happiness with a crappy attitude?!
google avatar

Yelp
What do you bring if you're visiting friends for dinner and have been delegated responsibility for dessert? What if the couple hosting has no overlap in their taste for dessert? If one of them only eats chocolate desserts, and the other's favorite dessert is an old fashioned crème brulee? Well, obviously you stop at Tartes and get a Chocolate Crème brulee tart. No question about it. Then you wait for six pairs of critical eyes to evaluate if your dessert credentials are all that they are made out to be. Not the host couple, though. They've seen you deliver time after time. Even if this is a family Thanksgiving meal, where people have feasted more than what their eyes let alone their stomachs can manage. You hear: "Just a small slice. I'm too full". But, that's just the opening bid. Soon, they will put their smartphones aside and unobtrusively make their way from the sofa to the dining table and surreptitiously carve out one small slice after another. "It's so light. I wouldn't mind another small slice". Before you know it, that tart's disappeared... All hypothetical, of course? ;) (Their lemon tart's excellent too. I can't say much about most other items on the menu)
google avatar

Brittany S.

Yelp
Oh, hi there, Tartes. You made for a lovely sidewalk pitstop during our downtown Philly escapades. I did a quick Yelp search for bakeries and voila! there you were. Your key lime pie tart was both delicious and the size I was looking for. I loved being able to see inside the bustling action of this "streetside" bakery. The challenge was the staff seemed super busy actually making the baked goods that they were not super friendly during the actual customer experience because it felt like we were interupting their work. Note that this business does not have seating - all baked goods and orders are picked up from the window noted in the pictures. They do have a cafe table or two on the street for those of us who love to sit and eat ;) This would have been more like a five star experience has the customer service experience been a little warmer. I think I was more excited about the interaction than the biz - womp, womp.
google avatar

Brie C.

Yelp
Great service, always friendly and efficient at the window. Pear pistachio tart is the best in my opinion; Other strong contenders are the bourbon pecan tart and lavender pound cake!
