The Best King Cakes in New Orleans for Mardi Gras | Eater New Orleans

"Tartine flies under the radar for many, hidden near the river in the Black Pearl neighborhood, but it’s king cake has emerged as a citywide favorite in recent years. It’s a brioche base rolled with brown sugar and cream cheese, baked, and topped with the traditional icing and colorful sugar. Pickup, local delivery, and overnight or two-day shipping — with a hefty price tag — are offered; see all options here." - Beth D’Addono

New Orleans’s Best Salads | Eater New Orleans

"Tartine flies under the radar for many, a French gem hidden near the river in the Black Pearl neighborhood, but it is an excellent choice for a quiet lunch. A menu of heaping entree salads includes a classic but rarely seen tuna Nicoise, a cured salmon salad, and one with roasted chicken, apples, grapes, and pecans. Also, keep an eye out for seasonal salad specials." - Clair Lorell

Google
Nice place to grab some food for your breakfast. The atmosphere was amazing and service was good! I had the stuffed baguette and it was marvelous. The soup was also great, full of flavor. Happy to recommend.

Google
I left New Orleans, but I still find myself thinking about (and craving) Tartine's grilled vegetable sandwich..... it's THAT good! If you haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend it! They also offer a variety of scone flavors that change daily, and they’re always delicious. Give it a shot! You won’t be disappointed!!!!

Google
Y'all!!!! Oh, my gracious!!! I don't know who is running this joint, but it is obviously someone's realized dream! When I tell you that you can taste the love in every bite, I mean EVERY-SINGLE-BITE! I'm not one to venture outside of my comfort zone when it comes to restaurant food, so I didn't. I ordered the breakfast sandwich and decided to avoid reading the details. Boy, was I pleased! Fluffy eggs, perfectly cut and cooked bacon, and pistou on ciabatta. These last two ingredients would have been a hard no for me. Apparently, I've never had a real and fresh ciabatta because this bread was the most amazing bread I've ever had in my life! And pistou? Uhhhh, no thanks. Have mercy! This tasted nothing like what I had imagined bright green mush would taste like. Heaven. It tastes like heaven🥰 Tartine (Google definition: a slice of bread with a sweet or savory topping) is easy on the wallet, big on taste, full belly without the sluggish feeling you get after a heavy breakfast, must visit kinda place! My kids were not as thrilled as I was, so I let them grab various fresh baked goods like the blondies, lemon poppyseed cake, and pumpkin loaf. They gobbled them down super fast! I did get a bite of the lemon poppyseed cake, and I instantly regretted not buying every slice they had. Crunchy outside, perfectly moist inside with great flavor. The cinnamon roll was pretty good, too! 10/10 RECOMMEND! Visited 12/30/25 Brunch

My boyfriend used to come here for years when he lived in New Orleans. He brought my family during our visit and it was incredible. They have very fresh bread they bake themselves, a cozy atmosphere, very kind staff, and everything we ordered was exceptional. Definitely recommend this for a breakfast/brunch stop for anyone looking in Uptown. We will always come back when we're in town! Absolutely wonderful!!

Google
This food is honestly amazing - 5 stars...so fresh and high quality with enormous portions (we had to take some home). Brunch-y, true French cuisine. 4 stars for having to bus your own table and a small room. Nice people who answer all your questions - without judgement! So so glad we experienced Tartine. Perfect end to our NOLA vacation. You'll love it. The egg in brioche was a taste of heaven!!! Everything our group ordered was shared because it was so tasty.

Google
Ok, so eating this shop's king cake actually made me angry. I was upset because this is probably the best king cake I've ever had in my life, and Tartine isn't getting the recognition that some of the other king cake big names in this city get (bakeries king cakes that are not worth the praise, imo). Gambino's has always been my number 1, but Tartine gives them the slight edge. Tartine's king cake reminded me of the traditional New Orleans king cake that I grew up on. We tried this king cake on a whim, and omg it did not disappoint. Please go on Great Day Louisiana or NOLA Now to promote your business, because that king cake was AMAZING, and more people need to know about it!

Google
This was our first meal in New Orleans and it has definitely set the stage. Food was fresh and tasty, service was polite and helpful and location was perfect for us as it was a short walk to the zoo. People kept coming in to pick up king cakes so we decided to see what the fuss was about... one bite and we understood. Sugary ooey gooey goodness! Yum!

Google
This place is the best at what they do. I love everything I have ever gotten here but here’s today’s choices. Baked eggs in brioche and the daily meat quiche. Didn’t take a photo of the soup but you can literally never go wrong with any of their soups. I’m a soup queen. This is the best soup in the city.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and get the ham and Brie baguette with fig jelly. Just the sandwich alone is filling yet light to where you're not overly stuffed and uncomfortable. It's also a good sandwich if you're in a rush and need a grab and go and eat in the car, just watch out for the fig jelly. Sooo good you won't regret it.

Yelp
We stumbled upon Tartine near Audubon Park/Tulane while driving around looking for something new to try for lunch. It's a casual neighborhood cafe with a relatively small interior, maybe 6-8 tables plus another half dozen outside if the weather is agreeable. You order at the counter, serve your own coffees and sodas, and then take a seat until your food is walked out to you. Service was friendly at the counter. They were helpful with questions/requests, and brought our food out to us as fast as it was made. Food wise, they offer tartines (open faced savory sandwiches), other sandwiches, salads, pastries, as well as a few one off breakfast options. The portions overall are generous, the croissants and other breads were fresh baked, and other ingredients seemed fresh/local or at least plated with care. My wife ordered the quiche wedge and it was a BIG slice, and tasty. I ordered the lox and bagels, and again huge portion of salmon and all the fixings you'd expect. Great meal at a hidden neighborhood gem. If we're around Audubon Park and craving breakfast, brunch, or lunch, Tartine is definitely on the list of solid options.

Yelp
Food was delicious. Portion sizes were pretty small, and staff wasn't the most enthusiastic nor helpful. However, great salmon spread, cinnamon roll, and scrambled eggs. Might leave you hungry walking out, but still good. Would return.

Yelp
Small friendly cafe where you order at counter and they bring to table. Self serve coffee and tea. Tasty iced tea with fresh lemons. Nice selection of sandwiches, salads and tartines. Indoor and outdoor seating. Salad Nicoise was generous with fresh greens, olives, roasted red peppers, boiled egg, palm hearts. The tuna was canned tuna slightly sweet. Perhaps used sweet pickle juice. It would have been MUCH better if an actual piece of fresh tuna. Realize this would make it more expensive but it makes a big difference. Steak sandwich also generous. Served on a warm crusty ciabatta bun. Spicy sauce. Plenty of meat. A side of bean salad. I heard their king cakes are good here but didn't sample.

Yelp
Basic lunch spot in a no frills casual picnic table atmosphere. Food was fine. Service friendly. Good in a pinch. Not a destination.

Yelp
Tartine has delicious pastries. The croissant had lots of layers and was good. It is a little pricey. It is nice though.

Yelp
Tartine is a tiny quaint cafe in the neighborhood very near Audubon Park. Street parking was available for free. The interior is very tiny, but there are several tables outside on a patio. It was a really nice day so we sat there, and it was very pleasant. The stuffed baguette seemed like something I'd like, but it was sold out (12:30 pm). Two of us ordered the Tartine. It is two pieces of delicious toasted fresh bread, which are served with butter, jam, and Brie, and a small bowl of bean salad. This simple lunch is very tasty, fresh, and filling! The bean salad is exquisite. We also had the scones, which were blueberry, very generously sized, with lemon curd, so amazing. For drinks we had the cafe au lait, mocha cappuccino, and fresh lemonade. This tasty food and lovely atmosphere made us feel so relaxed and satisfied. Moderately priced and yummy, we will be back asap! Thank you.

Yelp
I go for breakfast with friends. I eat my feelings there. I ordered a bunch of things to try, now I only order one thing, over and over again. I feel happy, I order it, then I'm happier. I feel sad, I feel happier and not guilty. The Queen of the menu for me is the Baked Eggs in Brioche. The perfect amount of butter, cream with eggs within house baked brioche. Oh thank you to all and any god of present or past times. This is the nicest coziest breakfast that just makes you feel like you've been whisked off to a Parisian Cafe. It comes with a little cup of season fruits and paired with a cup of coffee it is the perfect breakfast in my humble opinion. However, their quiche wedges are a solid second for me too. Everything is delicious and having tried a sampling of their dessert and pastry platters, I can say, lots of love is put into every bite at Tartine

Yelp
Wonderful for breakfast, brunch and lunch. One of the best neighborhood places in the city. Key Recommendations? Breakfast--go with the fresh bagels and croissants. And coffee, top of the line lattes. Brunch: stuffed sausage brioche and two eggs--enough to share, if you are feeling generous Lunch: big fresh salads--great presentation even better taste. This coffee shop plus has much more, but start with those three and there's no missteps. Inside seating and patio seating--comfy. You order at the counter and everything is delivered to you. Only negative--street parking only but hey it's a neighborhood place. Relish it!

Yelp
Alright to good sandwiches, salads and breakfast type items like bagels, scones, brioche and quiche. The coffee, tea and other drinks are now self-serve and on my last visit they seemed to be out of fresh coffee and had older lukewarm coffee that tasted watered down and blah. They used to serve great fresh coffee in a French press brought to your table but now the coffee is stored in a thermos you pump it out of. The ambiance of the inside just isn't inspiring to me while the outside patio is better in nicer weather. The location looks like somebody decided to open a restaurant next to their office and the parking is less than fun to deal with in the area. Most things here are probably around a three or four star when they are done properly but having bad coffee is just not an option in a joint like this. Seems like the quality has gone down here and gotten inconsistent. Granted I'm not much of a breakfast person so this is just not my favorite spot for breakfast, brunch or lunch but many folks love it. The baked eggs in brioche are one of the standout items here that you don't find in most other places in the area so you might enjoy sampling that. Overall they do offer some items that not many other places do while I'm sad the quality seems to have dropped off over the years. My video review of Tartine is here: https://youtu.be/DoevsLPTZ-4

Yelp
Salad nicoise - fanciest tuna I've had in a while --- yum! Met a friend for Friday lunch . Picnic tables outside and bistro tables inside. They had decorated king cakes with Christmas colors and huge boxes with fixings for gingerbread houses. Tiny place with excellent food !

Yelp
Awesome little breakfast/brunch spot tucked away near Audobon Park! We stopped in for brunch on a Sunday mid-morning and there were a few parties ahead of us in line. We waited about 10 minutes in line to place our order and sat outside on the patio. The inside is a little small but there are a few tables scattered throughout and more seating outside. We both got the meat frittata and it was amazing! I have never had a frittata where the egg was so smooth and fluffy and the piece was so thick! The broccoli was a nice added bonus so it wasn't all meat. It came with a little side of fruit. The slice is generously sized and even though I was quite hungry, I did not end up finishing it all. There are lots of items on the menu that looked great, I look forward to trying more when we return to New Orleans.

Yelp
Tartine has a really wonderful location. Nice patio, really shady and chill, right by the levee. I would definitely go back for the atmosphere alone. And all the staff was very friendly. I ordered the salmon rillette and didn't not enjoy it. Very heavy and lacked flavor. The bread did not seem fresh. I still plan to go back to try something else. The breakfast sandwich and croque madame both looked good!
google avatar

Michelle N.

Yelp
I was in the area and was looking for a break from all the heavy food we'd been eating, so I ended up coming here. We stopped by for brunch on a weekday, so it wasn't busy at all. You order at the register and seat yourself. The place itself is pretty small, but they have patio dining outside as well. There's also limited street parking, though I don't know how packed this place can get. My group ordered a variety of items and we were all very happy with our food. I was surprised at how huge the portions were! I personally tried the salmon rillette, egg salad, pate, and quiche. I enjoyed them all and the bread was definitely good. The food was simple and satisfying in the way you feel satisfied with home cooking. Would recommend if you're in the area!
google avatar

Dylan M.

Yelp
The counter where you order is cramped and cumbersome. People trying to order, people trying to get by (including employees carrying food) and the inside was piled up with a catering order on many of the tables. So let's just say the interior space is lacking and not very efficient. But when we came it wasn't super busy at the counter so placed our order and luckily it was a nice day to enjoy their outdoor seating which does offer a nice setting. The food is brought to you and while I initially thought it was a bit expensive for two sandwiches ($30ish) once I started to eat them I realized each could very well be two meals. The filling is bountiful and fresh and the bread is excellent. I really enjoyed the egg salad, the tuna sandwich could use a little zip/zing and was on the bland side which doesn't mean it wasn't good just a bit plain. If I'm in the area I would certainly go back.
google avatar

Eileen M.

Yelp
The food was yummy. I had the eggs (2) in the brioche bowl covered with cheese. It was delicious. My husband had a stuffed baguette with sausage and cheese. It too was great. We had a scone before the food got there. It was so good I bought a couple to take home.
google avatar

Yelp
Hands down some of the freshest and tastiest food I've had on my trip to New Orleans. The service is great, the restaurant is clean, and the food is of good quality. We will be back.

Caroline P.

Yelp
Everything is delicious and well made. They have the best quiche and the bean salad that comes with many dishes is addictive. Wish they had slightly more room inside but wouldn't want them to move.

Nancy F.

Yelp
Delicious. Portions are generous. Excellent preparation. Love the location. Off the beaten path, but then it's close to me. So I'm biased.
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
Visited for the first time today because I had a gift card. We will definitely return! The staff is very friendly and attentive even though it's an order at the counter restaurant. Prices are excellent with very large portions. We took some baked goods to go and they were delicious!
google avatar

Drew W.

Yelp
Absolutely the best king cake around! Don't believe the hype for other places: if you want a truly delicious king cake, buy it here!

John O.

Yelp
Great food! I'll definitely be back. Proper French coffee, baked eggs in brioche were Perfect. Quality ingredients throughout.
google avatar

Yelp
In from Cali took the St Charles trolley to the park. Looking for food. This place was great!!! Walked through the beautiful park. Saw some beautiful houses. Food was best yet in NOLA. Kudos! Baked Eggs in Brioche and Salmon Rillette were sublime. Will be back.

Donna C.

Yelp
Cozy little spot with excellent food and a relaxed atmosphere. A mix of self serve and wait staff.
google avatar

Ella A.

Yelp
Tartine has inside and outside seating. You order at the register and then wait for your items to be delivered. I had the "baked eggs in brioche", which was good (but I wish they would include the parts of the brioche that are dug out to make the bowl). Also, we had the French Press coffee (which does come out in a stainless steel French Press). I went on a Saturday and it was crowded and very busy. Tartine is a member of the Toaat family. Small amount of neighborhood street parking only.
google avatar

Claire B.

Yelp
My daughter surprised me with a Tartine king cake for my birthday and it was one of the best king cakes I have ever eaten. Give one a try and I promise you will not be disappointed .
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
What a gem. Tartine is tucked away in the Black Pearl. Shari V has been going for years, but somehow it has managed to escape me. With the exception of picking up King Cakes, which are delicious, I had not eaten at Tartine until a few weeks ago. We dined in for brunch. Very cute spot. It's fast casual, so you order at the table and you're food is brought out once prepared. Shari and I split the egg salad tartine. Apparently, a tartine is an open-faced sandwich. The egg salad was killer. I loved it. It comes with a 3-bean salad. I loved the 3-bean salad. It sounds like something that I would hate, but it had this thin, maybe avocado based, dressing. I lapped it up. I should have stopped at the tartine but I also ordered a chicken and mozzarella sandwich. I was stuffed by the time it arrived. Hard to even weigh in because at this point, I wasn't in the mood to eat. I stuffed myself on the egg salad tartine. Real quick, back to the king cakes. Our favorite king cake it Tartine's. Try them out. I ship them to friends out of state. I much prefer Tartine over places like DP or MR.

Pamela Janine K.

Yelp
Tired. Good attempt and nice people, just disjointed. Seems like a neighborhood spot, so maybe I didn't order the right things. Won't go back.

Yelp
The Salmon Tartine on crusty french bread and a Cappucino was perfect .. Had all the toppings .. delish

Yelp
Turn off Broadway and onto Perrier, look to the right and find a hidden gem for lunch! Service was quick even at lunch and the food was AMAZING! This is a quaint little place with seating areas inside, outside and outside covered. The menu was brief and the bread was DIVINE! Omg, I cannot say enough about what a treat Tartine was. I had the Brie, fig mustard and ham; my luncheon partner had the smoked turkey. Both were served with a legume and carrot salad that was special in and of itself. Wow! The salads being served to our fellow diners were beautiful and elegantly prepared. Fresh! A marvelous surprise hidden right under our noses near Loyola Broadway campus. Thanks for the smiles, Tartine!

Lauren H.

Yelp
Very filling and delicious breakfast! Everything we got was amazing, from the breakfast sandwich to the baked eggs. The scone was warm and soft and probably the best one I've ever had

Elizabeth O.

Yelp
Came back after not having visited for a while and there are no improvements to the dining room. It's cramped, ugly, and lit by harsh fluorescent lights. But worst of all, it's just dirty. The tables and floors are sticky and I would guess this place hasn't been deep cleaned in YEARS. Thick layers of crud are in every nook and cranny.
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
5 years later and Tartine is still great. I had a family lunch here today and everyone loved their food. Dad had the corned beef hash special and threatened to lick his plate he enjoyed it so much. The accompanying sour cream/horseradish sauce was super tasty. Mom enjoyed her pork rillette and my brother really liked his shrimp salad, especially the variety of vegetables. I can't get passed the eggs in brioche, so very delicious. I also love their king cakes but I am happy to report there were none for sale 2 days early. Still have a cute courtyard and it's order/pay at the counter. Friendly staff and good prices
google avatar

Lynzi W.

Yelp
Cute little place with exceptional food and serve your own coffee. It is usually always crowded with limited seating. The Baked Eggs in Brioche is a MUST, and so is the Tartine. Definitely add the bacon and eggs. The bacon is so sweet and thick and delicious. This is the best cafe coffee in the city in my opinion.
google avatar

Kelsey P.

Yelp
I like Tartine, but have never been particularly wowed the times that I've eaten there. It's a nice breakfast/brunch or lunch place with different French food options and baked goods. I guess the few times I've gone I've just never seen the hype that lots of people give it, even when I try different items on the menu. I go here when it's convenient, but don't particularly go out of my way to come here.
google avatar

Nadine V.

Yelp
One of the best sandwiches I have had in the city!! It's stuffed with triple cream brie, turkey, and lettuce. The jam on their tartine is a fig mustard and it's to die for. I would honestly buy it in a jarTartine also has my absolute favorite king cake! Trust me, I have tried many... Grab a piece and a sandwich the next time you're at Audubon or in the area. You won't regret it! Enjoy!! Extra Notes: I ordered the ham tartine and replaced it with turkey. Just a personal preference.
google avatar

Sandra L.

Yelp
Nice place to have breakfast. love the fresh bread I wish it was a bit bigger but the food makes out for the lack of spaces
google avatar

Jamie B.

Yelp
I came here to check out their awesome king cake I had heard about. It was indeed awesome and I think it should be ranked up there with Manny Randazzo and Anotines kong cakes. This king cake was moist as hell and filled with o.m.g. BROWN SUGAR CREAM CHEESE! I am so in love with this little cafe, I cant wait to have breakfast here next. It's even got a fireplace inside. Adorable with delicious food! Very happy I found this place.
google avatar

Jeremiah M.

Yelp
I'm not a local, We discovered Tartine on Yelp. It's definitely a small, off the beaten path joint. Working in a kitchen the size of a large walk-in closest, they are putting out some amazing food. We shared a few items for breakfast, everything was delicious. Regret not ordering more!
google avatar

Karla P.

Yelp
This place was great! It's small and the food is delicious. NOLA does not disappoint. We ordered the turkey sandwich - served cold (I like them hot but is was tasty- and we asked them to warm it up for us which they gladly did) We ordered the eggplant sandwich (my favorite!) it's Mediterranean flair with balsamic vinegar and tomatoes- amazing) and my other favorite the eggs is Brioche. The staff was nice and friendly. They were so helpful. Last but not least the coffee! Smooth and delicious. The place is a great for brunch. This is the type of place that I feel make New Orleans a city for foodies.
google avatar

Gayle P.

Yelp
Love this cozy, no frills place. Excellent breakfasts. I make a point of stopping here when in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Tiffany F.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite breakfast places in New Orleans. It's small, a little slow, and doesn't have a huge menu, but you don't really need anything other than the tartine or the baked eggs in brioche. The baked eggs in brioche might be the best breakfast I've ever had. The herbed cream and gruyere make it so decadent and rich. If you sit on the patio with your baguette, jam, butter, and coffee, you feel like a Parisian in the middle of New Orleans.
google avatar

Bella B.

Yelp
Great options on a cold day! Everything is made fresh. A cute bakery/French cafe feel. This place is best kept secret lunch spot in the river bend area

MB B.

Yelp
I ate at tartine for the first time today. The guy taking orders wrote "Loser" and "Stupid girl" on my and my friend's receipts. My friend who was "stupid girl" was fine with it. I, the "loser", found it unwelcoming as a first timer. And our third friend (middle receipt) wants to know what was written on her's. 2 stars because despite that interaction the sandwiches were good
google avatar

Alyssa Lynn G.

Yelp
Just had a quick Sunday brunch with my family. Incredible little place for a truly unique breakfast. I had the Salmon Rilletes. The dish is comprised of a salmon spread, chopped boiled eggs, onion marmalade and capers with a perfectly toasted mini baguette cut in half to spread the accoutrements on. It was simply a beautiful dish. My father got the baked eggs in brioche. His dish was made up of 2 poached eggs baked into the brioche bread bowl swimming in an herbed cream with a lovely slice of gruyere broiled on-top. Absolutely decadent! Both dishes were accompanied with a bean salad, which was a delightful light addition to the rich French cuisine.
google avatar

Chere W.

Yelp
After all the rich and fried food I love so much in NOLA my travel companion and I craved some healthier fare and we found it at Tartine's. I had the cured salmon salad, he had the steak bites salad and we split a roasted veggie sandwich. My salad was beautiful to look at and tasted even better. Besides a nice portion of cured salmon the Romaine based salad included mandarin oranges, feta cheese, 1/2 an avocado and a light and refreshing vinaigrette. My friend's salad was just as good with medium rare steak bites and grilled vegetables. It's an order at the front, they deliver to the table kind of place. Good AC. Self serve cold beverages. Reasonable prices. Near Loyola. Great place

Phil G.

Yelp
We rented bikes and rode out to Audubon Park and look at all the St Charles Ave mansions. Turned to Yelp to satisfy hunger and found this little café hidden in a residential area. The food is very well prepared and tasty. Order at the counter and a server delivers your order to your table. The salads are big and combine flavors and food groups well. I had the salmon, avocado, fennel with feta on a bed of lettuce.

TY H.

Yelp
So good. Pretty much always a line but moves pretty quickly. There's some tables inside as well as outside and it has a casual vibe. I had the tartine with Brie, butter, and seasonal jam. Delicious!
