15 Excellent Margaritas to Try in San Diego | Eater

"It can be hard to spend an evening in the Gaslamp Quarter without emptying your wallet these days, but at Taste and Thirst you can still get an honest pour for some of the best prices downtown. It’s happy hour every day from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., with half-price drinks and terrific deals on food. Spice things up with a jalapeño margarita (jalapeño-infused Astral Blanco tequila, agave, lime, Tajín rim) some TNT Strips & Fries (buffalo chicken strips drizzled in honey mustard and barbecue sauce), fries or tots in five different flavors, or a fat California burrito stuffed with sirloin steak, French fries, guacamole, sour cream, cheddar, and jack cheese. Best of all, Taste and Thirst has pet-friendly outdoor seating, so bring your dog out for a night of fun." - Mary Beth Abate

Loud, fun place with a huge selection of beers on tap. Staff member in training did an excellent job. Drinks are big, food tasty and atmosphere friendly. Highly recommend the Carne Asada Fries

Google
3.5 stars. Went on a Tuesday night and they were a bit understaffed but the staff worked super hard to make sure there was very limited wait, the orders were correct, and were very nice. Got the late night happy hour which I really enjoyed the options and felt like I got my money’s worth. Only got the fried food wise but they were hot and had a bit of a crunch. It was only a Tuesday so it wasn’t really packed but it was a no frills place that delivered what it said it would

Google
Incredible food and drinks and a great vibe. Christian, the doorman/waiter, as well as Forest, the bartender, were both so welcoming and made us feel right at home. Can't wait to return! Thanks for a great night.

Carlos

Google
Cold beer with great prices. Service was incredible and can’t beat their happy hour!

Google
Believe the hype. The happy hour specials at this place are truly unbelievable. This is the type of venue you feel conflicted on when you tell other people about it. On one hand you want to keep this place to yourself to hoard all the amazing drinks and keep the classic bar vibes. On the other, you want to see a business that offers value to their customers thrive. And here I am, leaving a 5 star review. Needless to say next time I’m downtown and looking for a drink this will be my first and maybe only stop. Side note, I didn’t have any of the food but the group next to us got chicken wings and I was unbelievably jealous.

Google
Well for the 3rd day in a row, I find myself here at Taste and Thirst. Like Toby Kieth says, "I love this bar"! The drinks are 50% off during happy hours. The wings are delicious. What I love most about this bar is the exceptional service. Bartender Stephany is a perfectionist! She provides excellent service and won't give you a drink if it isn't made right. Amazing! Would recommend this bar to all. ESPECIALLY during happy hour!

Google
I stopped here for what was described online as the best happy hour in san diego. It did not disappoint. Half price beers..deals on food.i got the buffalo garlic wings.they were fantastic. Great location in the gaslamp district. Great service.

Yelp
Staff is excellent always friendly and invitingly. You can play your own music at the jukebox. Drinks are about as cheap as you can get them in gaslamp. The food is good and comes out quickly overall good vibes to have a couple or a bunch of drinks. Best happy hour downtown

Sonia D.

Yelp
My server Gabier was so attentive and sweet! So well spoken and made our table laugh. We love this place all of the staff here is so welcoming

Natalie Z.

Yelp
Gabier was so nice and attentive! Truly a gem! Staff is always so welcoming every time I stop by. Def recommend the sliders!

Yelp
my favorite spot in the gaslamp! i'd guess i've probably had nearly 600 jack and cokes at t&t. perfect place to grab a delicious bite and refreshing drink downtown. casual vibe, friendly service, affordable prices, amazing happy hour.. what more could you need? we love to start our adventures here (before a padres game, a show at the balboa theatre, or hitting the clurb), but have been known to shut the bar down when there's a fun dj or we have the munchies (the kitchen closes late!) it's the perfect spot for large groups and we've even hosted private parties there! there's a reason this family-owned gem has been thriving the past 15+ years! we love t&t!!!

Yelp
My wife and I were in the area for a musical at SD Broadway, and as is the norm, headed over to The Local to catch a bite. Turns out that they were opening late this particular day, so we went wandering around the area to see what's open. We stumbled across Taste & Thirst, perused the menu, and decided to have a seat. We were greeted immediately by the waitress/hostess/bar keep (all the same person), who gave us menus and took our drink orders. A few minutes later, she stopped by to take our order - my wife ordered the chicken strips w/fries, and I ordered a small plate of boneless chicken wings w/teriyaki sriracha. While we waited, we checked out the place - DEFINITELY a Cheers kinda place - everyone seemed to know everyone.....at least 5-6 TVs scattered throughout, with various sporting events playing. And the ceiling decor was awesome - rows and rows of old beer pulls. Clever idea! We got our order, and were pleasantly surprised. The chicken strips were sliced chicken breast - and the boneless chicken wings were cubed chicken breast - both cooked to perfection. In fact, the ONLY downside was that the place was extremely understaffed (pretty much the norm these days, it seems). Bottom line, great food (and while we didn't partake, a HUGE line of beer pulls behind the counter!) - definitely recommended.

Yelp
I've had my eye on this place for its excellent Happy Hour! Taste and Thirst is a great local bar with multiple widescreen TVs and an amazing Happy Hour. The vibe is definitely a dive bar with several cocktail, beers and food offerings. Definitely a chill place to watch a game or two. Daily Happy Hour 3-8pm 50% all drinks! $1 Dollar off Boneless wings $2 Dollars off Quesadillas $2 Dollars off Carnitas plate $4 Dollar Chicharrones $5 Dollar Lemon Pepper Fries Recommendations: Peach Palmer - This came in a mini pitcher ya'll! This tasted like a peach iced tea and it was delicious but it's a lot to drink Trashcan - This literally had like 5 different types of alcohol. This hits you hard quick so be careful! Love the HH hour offerings! I got Lemon Pepper Fries - Crispy Boneless Lemon Pepper Wings - Good balance of breading and chicken. Chicharrones - You get quite a bit for this order! Goes well with all the drinks! Definitely recommend checking out this place for happy hour!

Yelp
The happiest staff ever!!! Great happy hour, with a lot of locals. Drinks are awesome and food decent. Comforter ambience.

Yelp
Decent happy hour deals. Place looks small but has a side room that fits larger groups. The beer, liquor, and food were all solid. I had chicken quesadillas and a few alcoholic beverages. Good group spot to meet up at. I'd come back for a return trip.

Yelp
This is a neat little hole in the wall bar that has a lot of personality. It is located just off of downtown San Diego's Gaslamp strip. There is metered street parking right out front of the bar. There is also a commercial garage and other metered street parking within a reasonable walking distance. The bar has a small patio area out front, a dining area and a full bar with seating. The bar/dining area is dimly lit and has a bunch of televisions for you to watch. You will also find that it is decorated with draft beer handles on the ceiling and there is a digital juke box and ATM on site. The bar also serves you typical bar food that includes: burritos, burgers, wraps, salads, Philly's, club sandwiches and wings. They have late night happy hour on select food and drinks and the kitchen is open late, which brought me here. The two bartenders working the night of my visit were awesome. They were very friendly and attentive. I ordered some teriyaki sriracha, with a side of lemon pepper fries. It took about 12 minutes for me to get my food and it was fresh and hot. The wings and fries were so delicious. They were packed with flavor. I highly recommend both. They host many pay per view UFC fight viewing parties here too (for a fee). I like this spot. I am glad that I was able to eat diner here. The food was finger licking (literally it was). This bar was very low key and chill. They had sports playing on the television and music playing in the background. I highly recommend checking this spot out.

Yelp
Taste & Thirst was an awesome experience. Fun space, great staff thank you Stacy and awesome prices. The food was so good I don't even think I snapped a photo.please order the chicken quesadillas whatever salsa they're served with is miraculous. The owner was kind and made us feel so welcome. We went for my mom's 63rd birthday and I couldn't have asked for a better experience for her. We legit drank everything! Bloody Mary legit! Mimosas refreshing, side car so good, my new favorite shot is a a Mexican candy don't think just order it. Oh yes last but not least we watched football and the music was good. Don't think just go it won't disappoint.

Yelp
We were bar hopping in Gaslamp and decided to stop here. We ordered fries and a few drinks. The fries were crispy and seasoned so well. The drinks also came out really fast and were really strong. I wish the tables were a little bigger but overall it was a nice place to stop at before dinner.
google avatar

Madi H.

Yelp
Nice happy hour spot with a good tap list and friendly staff! It wasn't busy on a Saturday afternoon so it was perfect for a quick stop for snacks. The lemon pepper tots were delicious and rhetorical wings (on the happy hour menu) were both filling and tasty! Our meal got a fun surprise from a bachelorette party on a bar crawl, which was very funny and entertaining. Overall, nice spot!
google avatar

Yelp
Forgive the bite in the photo but I couldn't resist trying this place out! Attentive service and solid food. We visited on taco Tuesday and the taco was really good and we even had a welcome shot! The drinks are great as well! Great spot located in the gas lamp district! Definitely stop by!

Fontazia B.

Yelp
I thought the food and drinks were okay the menu was decent wish it had more on the menu the place had chill vibes the staff and service was great my overall experience was good.

Yelp
We went here after a few hours at seaport village and before the padres game. Location is a few blocks away from Petco Park, a bit farther out than most gaslamp restaurants. We just had beers during their happy hour which were well priced, their micheladas were great! $23 for 2 beers + 2 micheladas. They also provided a cash discount! Ambiance is more like a dive bar vs a restaurant.

Yelp
I went here yesterday with my best friend/maid of honor after my wedding dress fitting for a quick drink and some mozzarella sticks since that what we were craving. We sat outside on their little clean patio, and were quickly greeted by our server, who was very sweet. The food was what you'd expect - we just got some apps to share. The mozzarella sticks are surprisingly large and not what we were expecting, but so good. The marinara you dip them in though is a bit chunky and also watery? But the taste was good. We also got some chips and salsa (nice salting and crunch on the chips), but the salsa was lacking in flavor. We also tried the tots with bacon and cheese - they're exactly what you'd expect, but dipped in ranch they were still pretty good. Drinks were tasty, and prices were fair.

Yelp
Our pre-Padres game lunch found us at a spot we had never been. Taste and Thirst on 4th Avenue. We walked in a found two seats at the bar. We met our initial bartender, but she was on her way out so we didn't catch her name. She was cool for the short time we knew her. Rae took over as our bartender and what a cute little spitfire she was. Her walk-in/entrance was epic. She even sang along with her intro music using a pint glass as a "microphone". It was great! We were both Jonesing for bar food and Taste & Thirst has plenty to choose from. I chose the TNT Strips & Fries while Becky went with the Nachos to which she added beef. It. Was. A. Lot. Of. Food. A lot! Pro Tip: There is no need to add to the nachos. They already come with beef chili. Pro Tip 2: If there are two of you and you order nachos - you will not need to order anything else. Nachos: Beef Chili, Cheddar & Jack Cheese, Tomato, Jalapeños, Sour Cream. A huge plate of tortilla chips very generously layered with all the fixin's. We loved that it was actually layered, they didn't just plop the chili, etc. on top. It was evenly distributed throughout the dish. The chili was quite good. The Jalapeños gave it a nice kick. TNT Strips: Buffalo Chicken Strips w/ Drizzled Honey Mustard & BBQ Sauce. Three large chicken strips were breaded and fried perfectly. The buffalo sauce gave them good heat. The honey mustard and BBQ sauce drizzle added a sweet/savory element. I really liked these. The leftovers were great coming out of the air fryer at home. The fries were of the thin-cut variety and were tasty. The had a very nice selection of beers for me, but only one brand of seltzer for Becky and only in a 12 oz. can. The brand was, however, Becky Personality Juice Hard Seltzer, which of course, is Becky's favorite! LOL! We'll be back. I want to try the T.J. Dogs...

Yelp
Stopped in yesterday, march 3, and enjoyed a couple of beverages... Jules and Roxy are both attentive, easy to talk to, and knowledgeable about the local area/scene. 20 Beers on tap, and a great happy hour!
google avatar

Miles S.

Yelp
Parallel to the epicenter of Gaslamp, this spot is a sneaky brunch spot. Off the beaten path by only a block, they offer omelets, quesadillas and $5 mimosas for brunch. Good bar food, stop by quick and stay eatin!
google avatar

Emily I.

Yelp
Pretty good. Was planning to go to Garage but it was closed!! The service here is great tho but I was surprised by the chili on the nachos. Decent happy hour prices tho, but I might try sliders next time. Everyone is so nice and it's a great option I just wish it was a little bit yummier! The service is really great tho.

Yelp
Ordered the buffalo wings and my order was wrong I was giving garlic buffalo they were okay I had already got home by the time I noticed. They do have good fries just need a little salt.

Rena B.

Yelp
While we were visiting San Diego, we went on a walking tour and decided to stop in as this place was rated very well. The food was spectacular! My husband had the American burger and it was done perfectly. I had the patty melt and it was spectacular. Make sure you add jalapeños. Yum We also had the tots with bacon and cheese, and they were spectacular! You really can't beat a bottle of champagne for $15 along with orange juice to make it a mimosa. Our friends ordered the chicken and waffles and they were the best I've ever had....hands down! Stacy was our server and did a fabulous job

Catie B.

Yelp
this place has a great happy hour and awesome customer service thanks to Gabier! He's very sweet and attentive and always made sure we had what we needed! definitely recommend stopping in!

Gabier L.

Yelp
I had the honor of being served by Gabier. He was very professional in front of my family and offered great customer service and made us laugh all night. Really appreciate him and what taste produces.

Yelp
Taste & Thirst is amazing! Their happy hour can't be beat. Not to mention their amazing delicious food! Their wings are delicious and their burgers are to die for !! Jenna was my server and she was such a delight so kind and welcoming!

Yelp
I went to this place on my birthday to watch the SAINTS play. The food was good, and the atmosphere was great.
google avatar

Yelp
Bad ass vibes. Quick service. Nothing much to ask for. The music FYI is on point! Cheyenne is the best they got!
google avatar

Jo Ann G.

Yelp
We attended a Christmas Party at this place and it was extremely busy on a Friday night, yet we had an entire back area bar all to ourselves! One of our co-workers were able to bring in a Karaoke system and many took turns singing and dancing the night away! The venue allowed us to cater our dinner as our group consisted of vegetarians and gluten-free attendees. It was a great night and it seemed everyone enjoyed themselves. Some patrons joined us for karaoke too, and we found a hidden gem...one of the female bartenders nailed several songs she selected! It was great to see others participating and celebrating with us!
google avatar

Carlos B.

Yelp
The best bar in San diego in my good God American opinion . Cold brew and good cocktails, good amount of tvs , good ass bar food . Great servers and a cool ass bar . No reason you shouldn't stop by for a a good time . Love this place so much . XD XD
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
This is a cheap hole in the wall dive bar. If your on break from work or broke but feel the need to some reason be in public this is the place for you. They split 30$ checks three ways and are used to people arguing over a check total less than 100$. This is not a date spot. This is where men go to drink 3$ beers and watch sports. And where broke girls go to try and get people to buy them stuff.... I mean if your into trash dive bars look no further! But if you want a respectable establishment keep walking to the next block. Also the staff are not always in a good mood most likely because they are understaffed and over worked that's all I could tell in my two trips there
google avatar

Jenna B.

Yelp
Solid spot for a dive bar / sports bar. Drinks are simple but strong, typical food menu with good size portions and they don't skimp on the sauce. Got nice crispy chicken tenders and crunchy tots. Their specials go on for a long time, certainly a good spot to catch a game.
google avatar

Kimi S.

Yelp
We were going to do our football draft at Gran Havana until we realized they don't serve alcohol so our commissioner found this gem of a bar right next door! Good find Vish. Shout out to Jules for taking care of us! Great, friendly, efficient service, she let us take up her whole back area of the bar (thankfully next to the huge fan since it was hot). We had a great time drafting here, I got a Bloody Mary since I had too much tequila the previous night. But then by the end of the draft, we all had celebratory shots to end the afternoon.

Jeanie N.

Yelp
Stacy, Gabe, & Jules are our favorite, give then a 10000000% raise pls they did everyone n later whar
google avatar

Yelp
Server was super friendly and attentive. She came and gave us extra honey and lemons for our hot toddy's. Delicious drink for a cold rainy day!

Yelp
SundayFunday San Diego! ComicCon SundayHop Hello $5 mimosa and $6 bloodys Pick one have one ;-) Chips and Salsa to fill the belly , and the menu is legit for out of towners!
google avatar

Charles H.

Yelp
Good happy hour. A couple of the draft beers tasted "off" to me, but they were half price. Boneless Chicken Wings with lemon pepper are better than most places: good sized, fresh and juicy with not too much breading. $1 off during happy hour. I took this a good sign for their other food. Another patron mentioned he was enjoying his quesadilla, which is $2 off during happy hour. Friendly service. This being the Gaslamp parking can be especially tricky during peak times, so allow plenty of time to search or be prepared to pay in a structure.
google avatar

Elyssa T.

Yelp
Go to Gaslamp District! Go to Taste & Thirst! Go during happy hour! All in that order. Gaslamp District is definitely a tourist spot and one for the night life. First and foremost, this is probably the only bar I've been to with a clean bathroom. CLEAN! And our bartender/server was on top of it with all the different groups. It was quite busy at the time. Like any bar, there were lots of TV screens playing different games. Read carefully on their happy hour deals. At first glance it looks like the quesadillas were $3. Cross reference the deals with the menu and you'll be fine. We came here to try their Carnitas Plate and were not disappointed. It's a popular item for a reason. We also ordered chicken quesadillas, lemon pepper fries, and teriyaki sriracha wings. Everything had a nice kick to it! It's your typical bar food but way better! Food was so good we kept ordering. We don't normally order more food but when it tastes good and prices are good, it just makes sense. 10/10 we will return.
google avatar

Aliya M.

Yelp
Decent happy hour! And it's lasts til 8. Good location on the edge of Gaslamp. Music was good, not too loud. Drinks were decent. A little sweet. Only thing that bothered me was lots of flies near the entrance.
google avatar

Porscha L.

Yelp
Good service and cheap drinks during happy hour. The food was good but nothing special.

Aaron B.

Yelp
Stacy is the greatest. The most friendly bartender in all san diego!! Whenever is working I always stop in..

Brandon B.

Yelp
First time at taste and thirst since I've started working in the industry. Stacy did an amazing job taking care of me at the bar. She was very attentive and stayed busy while keeping her customers talking. 10/10 experience, I'll be back!!!
google avatar

Ash G.

Yelp
I was originally going to give this place a 4 star, but seeing how so many people want to give horrible reviews just to be HATERS solely based on the fact this place caters to us out of towners that happen to be DODGERS fans well I just had to bump this up to a 5 lol Sorry, not sorry. Whom a BUSINESS caters to is nobody's concern except the person/ people that own this establishment. You hate the blue, but they just see green. If I had a bar in LA & Padres fans came through (with respect) they'd get treated proper. Why?! It's called good ethics, good business, mind on my money, money on my mind type of vibe which by the looks of it some of y'all don't know a thing about. I'm definitely going to refer all my fellow Dodgers fans over here if they come to SD. Matter of fact all Dodgers fans that see this review show this spot some love. I came in for beers, and ended up staying for dinner. I ordered the American Burger w/ avocado (extra) & bacon (extra) The burger itself came out delicious. I genuinely enjoyed the burger. It was cooked just right & ingredients looked fresh. Now what would've made this review a 4 is the fact that there's no sides provided with the burger so that means no fries =.( I was provided with the smallest, thinnest pickle I've ever seen though, but I don't like pickles so that didn't matter to me. However if my man was here he'd be pissed as hell lol (He enjoys a nice fat juicy pickle of which this was polar opposite) The burger and beers were sufficient though. The vibe was chill, staff was friendly & attentive & overall I left content. I'd come back if I'm in the area #HatersGonnaHate #GoDodgers
google avatar

JoAnne W.

Yelp
Great happy hour prices, the lemon pepper fries were delish, the steak quesadilla, my husband liked but I didn't care for it, tasted like roast beef to me. Great service, only bummer is they couldn't get the Padres on TV's.

Adrie D.

Yelp
Good, service & ambience was great! We stopped by to watch the eagles game and had a really good time. Our server was great! I didn't catch his name but he was very attentive & quick. Will be back next time we're in SD.
google avatar

Keane V.

Yelp
Came for happy hour sat night and it's a vibe without being too crowded. Service is great. Gabe, Jules, and Stacy are all super friendly and fun. Def plan to come back the next time we're near gaslamp
google avatar

Arpita G.

Yelp
Went back a second time for happy hour and was disappointed to find out after we ordered that they ended happy hour early that day (7 pm instead of 8 pm). It would have been nice to know that ahead of time! I got the spicy mamasita and was honestly not impressed. The drink itself was not the best and I don't think I'll be back to try more cocktails.

Julianna D.

Yelp
great late night food and they had happy hour till midnight. will be back again get the wings, great service and great place to pee

Leandra F.

Yelp
Please open up an LA location!! I rarely leave reviews but man this place was so good. My friends and I were in SD for my birthday, starving after getting off the train. Found this place online and we decided it looked good/simple so we walked over. But this place highly exceeded our expectations! We walked in and were greeted by a kind server who said we can sit where we wanted and gave us our menus. The atmosphere was very chill, fun lights, and just group of friends having fun. My friends and I got the Sweet and Spicy wings, Carne asada fries, Chicken Quesadilla, and the American burger. My wings were beautifully cooked and tasted soo yummy. My friends also enjoyed their entrees but particularly the American burger was AMAZING. My friend said she had never had one that good and couldn't stop thinking about it. We returned again our last day for brunch and were wowed yet again with the amazing food. Personally I'm the type of person who can never finish my food but I cleaned that plate. Unfortunately my group and I are under 21 so we did not have any of the alcoholic drinks but hey they got the "taste" part down. We had a great time, great food, and great service. Highly recommend if you're in the area. Just wish they had a location back home in LA

Jonah D.

Yelp
Wasn't sure coming into this place. Kind of a last minute decision. Now it'll be a first pick! Got the chicken BLT wrap and it hit the spot! Stephanie also made sure our first time was great with quick and efficient service. 10/10 would recommend!
