China Max Chinese Restaurant to Reopen on Convoy With All-Day Dim Sum | Eater San Diego

"Owned by the same group taking over China Max, this nearby Cantonese restaurant is expected to have its focus shifted as the team repositions its holdings; plans under consideration would pivot Taste of Hong Kong toward a modern version of a cha chaan teng, the Western-influenced Hong Kong–style cafe, though that concept is still in development." - Helen I. Hwang

I love that I don’t have to drive all the way to Falls Church for authentic dim sum/Chinese! Everything I’ve had here has been amazing and I’ve been here 5 times now. My go-to dishes are the crab rangoons, preserved egg and fish congee (porridge), crab fried rice, salt and pepper pork chops, beef chow fun, Chinese bbq pork, shumai, shrimp rice crepes, pork with sour cabbage, egg custards, and sesame balls. The service is always very helpful and attentive. I’m not Chinese so they were patient when I asked questions and didn’t know what to order the first couple of times I went. On the weekends they do dim sum carts so it’s fun going and seeing the food roll by the tables. This is a great way to see some of the food they offer because I don’t know what any of the dishes are called so it’s easy to point at a dish on a cart you think looks good. This is a great place to bring a group. Every time I come with a new person they all love the food!

Google
Give this place a look for Chinese food that is authentic real and very tasty. These types of places are becoming more and more difficult to find for some reason. These days all I see are strip mall carry outs and corporate restaurants trying to serve Chinese food that taste like sauce, chicken nuggets. We came here today and tried their roast duck and bok choy with oyster mushroom really good. This place is reliable no frills authentic.

Google
Taste of Hong Kong dim sum was a big dissappointment. We used to love this place with good, genuine hong kong food. Our favorite place before but last weekend we stopped by here for impromtu dim sum. We were one of the first few to come in. We got dumplings, crab ball, pork ribs, chicken feet, beef and some tofu rolls. Each portion was about $6 and crab ball was about $10 for 2 pieces. *Chicken feet was dry, dumplings was not hot, crab ball tasted a bit weird (this used to be my absolute favorite). Crab ball was was at about $5 each. They have plenty of space to sit. Service, HANDS DOWN TO THE AMAZING SERVICE OF WAITERS AND STAFF. They were so friendly, always smiling and so so sweet. The food was not as good but the service here is top notched. We often get lobster with ginger and scallion and seafood fried rice and roasted pork (these are still good here) . I think just the dim sum food was not a good experience!

Google
I rate Chinese restaurants first by their soup. Hot and Sour did remind me of Hong Kong in the early 90s. Best I’ve had in DMV. Could have been spicier. Ordered sizzling black pepper steak, king pao beef, and Singapore noodles. Great taste, texture, and appearance. No soup pictures. Ate that too fast. Picture is of half eaten dishes. We will be back to try their dim sum. Visited Saturday afternoon at 2:45.

Google
Great service for our quick dim sum out. The flavor of the pineapple roll, spare ribs, and steamed pork buns were the highlights. Very good price and the food came within 5 min

A friend recommended a Taste of Hong Kong after we lost our favorite Cantonese diem sum restaurant during the pandemic. My husband and I came here on a Sunday to dine -in. We were immediately seated and were able to select 5-6 dishes within the first 5 minutes! The servers were very welcoming and spoke to me in Cantonese which made the experience even better. We were like little kids and ordered way too much food, and as they say, our eyes were bigger than our stomachs!! They had a great selection, we had the basics, ha gow, siu mei, cha siu bows, ga lan broccoli with oyster sause, cheng fun, jeen der, eggplant and turnip cakes. I know I'll be back to try more dishes. The food was tasty and met expectations. Overall, I gave them 5 stars but a 4 for atmosphere. It was a little noisy and the decor outdated. Nonetheless, it was a good experience with good diemsum and service.

Google
Dim Sum was good! After 3pm they have a limited menu.

Google
The food was very good and the service was fantastic! It may be possible that I had the best server that I have ever had. Went again today for lunch and the food is fantastic and the service great. The hot and sour soup is very good as is the Szechuan beef.

Yelp
The food here is really good. I frequent here with my family. You know it's good when a large portion of the customers are also Asian haha. There's a large variety of dishes so everyone can find something they like. I particularly like the Orange Beef. It's not as oily as Chinese takeout food and the broccoli is fresh.

Yelp
Wonderful authentic hong Kong family styled food. Lots of flavor even in Won Ton soup

Yelp
Awful experience. I went in with my family for lunch and we ordered a couple small dishes for the table to share and the waiter charged my mother over 400 dollars. We were horrified. She's recovering a refund currently, but that never should have happened in the first place. The food was good but the service is worth never ever coming back. I do not recommend coming here.

Yelp
We had not intended to enjoy dim sum, but it turned out to be a delightful surprise. As my husband and I entered, we were unaware that Taste of Hong Kong serves dim sum on weekends. Upon arrival, we were greeted by push carts brimming with a diverse selection of dim sum. We found it hard to resist selecting our favorites. The service was exceptional even though the restaurant had a quiet number of customers dining in and ordering takeout. Each dish was served warm and freshly prepared, bursting with flavor. Additionally, we ordered some entrée dishes, which were seasoned perfectly and showcased an authentic style. Taste of Hong Kong is definitely bringing their reputation up after a long period of time. Would love to go back there again!

Yelp
The waiter was great. The ambiance was just ok . I feel they could put a little more effort in decorating . The menu was sticky needed cleaning. I asked for soda and received a can with ice. I know most Chinese restaurants serve can but just not a fan . I ordered the Hot&Sour soup was good. I ordered the Triple Delight spicy and it was sweet. So I only have a 3 star not sure I would recommend this place knowing others much better.

Yelp
Really good, fresh food Sweet and sour soup is delish! Clean and friendly. I honestly think this is better than Chinese food

Yelp
Do your people try a thousand egg with shredded pork congee in Taste of Hong Kong did you get surprised , I did one day I went there try a bowl of that congee after I got that congee I so upset I saw a shredded pork so thin like a hair maybe my hair thick the pork,I am never going back there I hope no body go there because the food not that good ,I gave -5 stars

Yelp
We always stop by Taste of Hong Kong for quick Cantonese food whenever we are up in Northern Virginia. Typically, we eat there for dine in, but we picked up an order of white cut chicken and salt and pepper pork chops; however, the food was a little colder than usual - granted we did pick it up 30 minutes after we placed the to-go order. The pork chops were quite overcooked - though the flavor was still good in my opinion. Regardless, heated up - the food was not bad. All together, the food came out to be $38 after tax. The only qualm we had was that there was only one white rice that came with these two orders (I believe the chicken does not come with a side of rice).

Yelp
Steak of Hong Kong 5/5 so much flavor and nicely medium rare cook super beefy enjoy with brown sauce and white rice wonton soup 4/5 yummy soothing but broth a tad bit salty Seafood fried rice 4/5 - good so much shrimp and scallop . Can use a tad bit more flavor and white pepper but I can see a lot of peoples like it because it easy and comforting and kids would love it if they like shrimp
google avatar

Jules B.

Yelp
Menu was changed with a higher price but the one they gave me still had the lower price. To make a long story short the owner did not honor the price on the menu and I was charged the higher price. Poor management skills for 2 dollars
google avatar

Sylvie C.

Yelp
I am sorry to report that this was by far one of the worst meals I have had in awhile. I ordered shrimp wonton noodle soup. The shrimp wonton wasn't all the way cooked and it had a sour off putting taste to it. The noodles were not cooked all the way and tasted hard and crunchy. The soup was tepid and hardly had any flavor or saltiness to it. For a $16 meal, I expected better especially given how meager the portion was. There was exactly 5 wontons in the soup. Very disappointed and will not be returning.

Yelp
Came here for the 1st time and was pleasantly surprised how good everything was. Super fresh and everything tasted authentic and they good quality ingredients for everything even the garnish that came with dishes. We had the Orange Chicken, Curry Chicken, Mango/Beef fried rice and Sautéed broccoli. 9/10 on every dish. Curry chicken wasn't my thing but still was good and nice portions. Staff was very nice and accommodating.

Yelp
Food is ok but not to die for. Needs improvement in customer service & cleanliness! When clearing the tables it can be very noisy!
google avatar

Yelp
Yeah it is as bad as the one star reviews say. I knew I was taking a risk coming here but wow. Cold fried shrimp cake thing, cold taro cake, and BBQ pork bun had only sugary flavor, no other flavor. Shrimp dumplings were good enough; everything else bad. Not much on their pathetic dim sum carts.

Yelp
Before a flight, we had dinner at Taste of Hong Kong. The staff were attentive and hospitable. Our party shared Minced Beef Soup, Sauteed Fish Filet with Yellow Leek, Chive Blossoms and Veggies with Black Bean Sauce, Wonton Soup, Stir Fried Snow Pea Leaves, Mongolian Beef with Onions, and Sautéed Silver Fish, Dried Squid, Jumbo Shrimp with Yellow Leeks, Chive Blossoms and Taro with XO Sauce. Everything was delicious. My favorite dish was Mongolian Beef with Onions. It paired nicely with white rice!

Yelp
Gotta say I was a little dissapointed with this place. This place boasts of fresh dim sum dishes, however, half of the dim sum I chose came cold. I had ordered the crispy shrimp cake, dim sum, and was looking forward to it. Not only was it cold, it was not crispy. When I asked them to return it and bring me a fresh one, they simply refried the one that I had, and brought it back. I really wanted to like this place, but will not be going back.

Yelp
My friends and I tried to go to Taste of Korea but it was close so wandered here and I am so glad we did. The service was impeccable. Every employee was kind and helpful. They have an expansive menu and some great lunch specials. I had never seen jellyfish on a menu before so I HAD to order it and it was absolutely delicious. Everything about my experience at this restaurant was perfect and I hope to stop here again next time I am in town!

Yelp
Came here at the tail end of the lunch rush on Sunday for dim sum, and a good number of items on the dim sum menu were sold out, which was fine honestly, but it's the service I m rating. My group sat at our table for 20 minutes with no one taking our order until we had to flag someone down. At this time a lot of customers were leaving since the rush was over. They forgot about 3 things we ordered and we had to remind them twice. Yikes. The food itself was good, but not great enough for the price they charged. We did like the rice porridge dish. It's a shame there aren't any great sit down dim sum places anywhere nearby and this is the closest. I think I'd rather go to the Lotte in Chantilly instead and get dim sum to go from that one takeout place.

Damon D.

Yelp
The worst Chinese restaurant we had ever been to. The meats were not fresh, salty, and charged way more from the menu price. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. If you insist to go, you will be regretted!

Narawadee V.

Yelp
I spent over $100 for large order of Dim sums for take away. The restaurant staff put the plastic sauce containers together inside the dim sum foam containers (right on top of the very hot food). The plastic sauce containers were melted thru the food when I got home. Very very very disappointed!!!

Yelp
Good find if you want Dim Sum. Love their food. We ordered several Dim Sum and crunchy noodles with veg sauce . Food is very good here . Definitely going to come again.

Yelp
Was craving some dim sum and decided to try this place out with a few friends on a Thursday night. Was hoping to have a good experience, but was disappointed. The Food: The food quality was underwhelming. Ordered some Shumai, Har Gow, Crab balls and turnip cakes as the dim sum dishes. The dim sum menu was limited though, rightfully so since it wasn't peak dim sum hours I guess. Also, ordered some Beef and Broccoli, Fried Pork and Garlic String Beans. Dim sum dishes were decent, came out hot and nicely cooked. The Entree's were a let down. The quality of the food lacked flavor and warmth. And it was all portioned very small. The Service: Service was good. Staff were friendly and very on top with getting orders brought out fast. Lacked on some things here and there like water refills, but overall decent. The Atmosphere: The place was nicely decorated. Standard Chinese cuisine decoration and aesthetic. Fill with round tables for large groups and spacious. Overall, a 3/5. Food was poorly portioned, for how pricey it was. And, the overall quality of the food was poor. Unfortunately, I won't be coming back.

Yelp
When service is great, both the food and environment become better. I came here for dinner and ordered (as a special request), their Kung Pao Tofu, and the food was great. My server Sam was nice, professional, and kind, and even his coworker, Simon saw from afar that I could use a knife to cut my food, so he came from behind to bring me one. So nice. It's simple things like this that convey a businesses company culture and values. A for that, The vibe is fine and at most could use some more decor, but it's spacious. Yes, there could be more vegetarian options like veggie dumplings (which Dumpling Queen does a great job in), but all In all its a nice restaurant.

Yelp
Recommended by friends to get takeouts from this place for a night in. What a great place especially if you crave food one Cantonese cuisine. Everything from ginger chicken to snow peas leaves to sour picked with fish filet to beef chow fun and fried rice was delicious. Char siu was a bit tough but it's not bad. Egg plant and bitter melon was very flavorful. Staff was friendly and service was quick. I asked if I could pay over the phone with card but was told to pay when I got there. No sure why but it wasn't a problem. Glad to support local business especially when food was great. Restaurant itself was quite spacious with some large tables. Would be good option to dine in as well.

Yelp
The food is prepared as you order, no rush orders. Service time is about 15-20 minutes for dimsum. The hakaw is 9/10, taste is on point but it is too sticky on the container even if there is wax paper. The pork with crab/shrimp paste shumai is typical but its freshness is very helpful for you to appreciate the meal. Bean curd skin roll is a must. The contributory factor for my stay is its overall ambiance. I think the restaurant needs a major cleanup.

Yelp
Came here on a weekday night with some friends & I'm so surprised to see all the negative reviews here. Granted we didn't order dim sum and stuck to the "chefs special menu on the little block board" Ordered the Peking duck and pork chops, snow pea leaves, fish filet with garlic and veggies Peking duck was good (took maybe 20 mins to prepare), though I wish it was just a bit crispier! Otherwise I appreciated this Peking duck since the gourmet inn one has sorta declined over the past year. Loved the pork chops - seasoning and fried texture was on point! I think it's hard to go wrong with snow pea leaves And fish filet had a nice seasoning to it along with assortment of veggies Overall they do season a bit strongly (a bit salty) but idt anything too crazy! Will be back for sure

Yelp
This is my favorite new place for dimsum!!! We tried a medley of items and well as eating in the restaurant. First of all, the service is great. Cantonese people always sound like they're yelling and that you're somehow always never meeting their expectations and dreams. You sit down and suddenly you have an Asian dad and an auntie calling you fat. It's all good man, don't take points away for this. This is a label of authenticity, no Looey Vutton bags here. The food: I like the shiu mai, ham sui gok, chicken feet, sticky rice in lotus leaf (jun jeu gai), their siu yuk isn't bad. On the menu, their salt and pepper pork chops and kingdom pork chops are legit. Hit or miss items include their seafood congee, snow pea leaves, yeung chow fried rice, pork spare rib dimsum. Value: decent, a little on the pricey side. Overall: 4.15/5

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
Great food. Nice service. Never disappoints. Has dim sum carts on weekends. Authentic Cantonese food.
google avatar

Lisa W.

Yelp
The restaurant is a pretty greasy dump. I have gone there several times as there are no good Chinese, Cantonese restaurants in our area. The older Gentleman waiters are friendly and helpful. I keep falling in love with a dish and order it again and it is terrible. The prices are high and the potions are small.
google avatar

Priscilla K.

Yelp
The food was amazing! I took my foodie children (15 - 10) and they loved it! The waitstaff were very friendly and helpful. I asked the waiter for a recommendation and it was spot on. We're definitely coming back for that salt and pepper pork!
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
The hospitality and service is outstanding! We were very well taken care of as if the restaurant took us in to their own home. They made a deliberate effort to ensure their hot tea was intended to provide us with warmth. Our waiter, Sam, described the different Chow Foon dishes off the menu and asked if we had a picture of what we wanted to better help find our desired dish. The food was flavorful and unforgettable! Every table around us had enticing dishes. You have to go!

Yelp
This is our second time at this location. The first time was a big group. It was excellent food and service. The most recent visit was "meh" as far as food quality. We stopped in for a quick lunch. A small dim sum cart passed a few times. We picked out the shrimp dumplings. They were good when hot but after sitting a few minutes, they hardened and stuck together. I ordered a menu item of Mongolian beef. It was tossed in a gelatinous sauce that I could not stomach. Service was very good thus the 4 stars.
google avatar

Ricky G.

Yelp
Real dim sum in real trolleys (it was Saturday). I was in heaven. The food is top notch. Not the same quality as Chinatown, NYC, but as good as any other dim sum place outside of that. Fair prices. We stuffed ourselves for $50. Excellent shumai, hargow, and pork buns. Half an hour drive from home, but worth it without question. Go there as a non-Asian and you are in the minority. That along speaks volumes for this restaurant.
google avatar

Justine T.

Yelp
My favorite dim sum in the DMV! My new go-to. The quality and taste reminds me of Fortune's (been closed for awhile now, located in Falls Church) dim sum. Fortune had the best baked pork buns, and these come really close! Simply delicious. Soft buns with a generous and flavorful filling. I really like their shrimp cheung fun, too. The orange chicken from their regular menu is also good. Service was great - friendly and fast. I really enjoyed my meal here and will be back for more!
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
Not a great first experience. Went for dim sum: 1) pan-fried turnip cake, 2) pork and shrimp shumai, and 3) bean curd skin roll in oyster sauce. 1) Best of the three pieces, which isn't much of a compliment because I could only eat two of the three cakes. One wasn't cooked through... It was total mush. Also, not a vegetarian cake; includes bits of Chinese sausage. 2) Really disappointing. Worse than the shumai I've purchased from the freezer section of grocery stores... Tastes gritty and chewy, no way it's fresh. 3) I mis-ordered here. Intended to request the steamed rice shrimp cake... Would not reorder the bean curd skin roll. Don't think I will give Taste @ HK a second shot. If one of the three dishes had been a hit, maybe I'd feel differently. Bad first experience coupled with low health score? I'll keep looking.

Yelp
Yangzhou Fried Rice*, Hot Plate Black Pepper Beef, Whole Fish Fillet over Crispy Fishbone (NOT the seafood one), Flat Rice Noodle (Smoky pad see ew), Roast Duck, Clay Pot Pig Feet.. classics with red tea. Worked so much he's hobbling, waiter** treats you like family. I don't love msg but for some reason, go to for family celebrations. We don't get any seafood labeled dishes as not huge tilapia or something fan. Call in takeout's fast. For now, stop trying to get dim sum (recent) and Ameri. *Foodies: uncle roger shorts commentary, look it up & bask in wok fried seafood broth technique **Dyn his wife's local school lunch lady that nutrient your kids? me either

John G.

Yelp
Ordered the Singapore style noodles that only came with pork and shrimp and not a combination meat like other restaurants offer. Lunch price (and portion!) was $21! Noodles were dry and the pork was not seasoned well. Also, no napkins or chopsticks provided. Really disappointed with the food.

Yelp
Okay I have to say I'm glad I came back because the first time o tried it I wasn't impressed but we came back Saturday and we found out they have dim sum with carts! Which is the best way to have it. It was crowded but the waiter was friendly and we got our foods relatively quickly and it was pretty good! I know I will be back for more dim sum because there isn't a lot of options aside from falls church or further but now I have a new place I can have decent good dim sum !

Yelp
Food is decent, but service is terrible. Came here to enjoy a birthday lunch with my family and the server who looks and acts like he should be on a sexual predator list had the audacity to tell us we didn't tip enough. He was uncomfortably flirting with my daughter our entire meal. Despite efforts to ignore and dismiss him, he kept coming by trying to get her attention. At the end, he tried to claim an automatic gratuity policy as the reason why he was manually adjusting our tip in front of us. Auto grat policies should be clearly stated at the start of a meal, even verbally communicated, to help manage expectations. Customers should always be allowed to tip on top of an auto gratuity, but restaurants should never change a tip amount after the fact because an indicated tip was not to their expectation when an auto grat was not applied. That's your missed opportunity, not my mistake. Under no circumstance should tips ever be manually added after giving a customer the opportunity to allocate tip on their own volition. Having previously worked in the food industry for the better part of a decade, I can say that my family always tips generously and fairly, as appropriate and earned. We indicated what we thought was fair. If they had applied an auto gratuity for our meal, we would have accepted but not given a cent more. When my brother expressed discontent with the server's behavior, he returned my brother's anger in kind which was completely unprofessional. The server's behavior and the nonchalant attitude of the manager was completely unethical and unacceptable. I was already thinking I'd never bring my daughter there again, but now none of our family wants to return.

Yelp
A bit pricey for fried rice but it is really good. My family likes to eat here on weekdays when we don't want to cook.

Yelp
The food is amazing, the staff is so friendly unlike any other Chinese restaurants. Make sure to get seafood fried rice and seafood pan fried noodles.!!!

Kerri M.

Yelp
I went specifically for dim sum on a Tuesday after work hours. The selection was limited to only three items. I just had the shumai and har gow which was good, just was hoping for a wider selection. The seating was abundant and the waiters were hustling to keep things accommodated.
google avatar

Tiffany W.

Yelp
Don't ever come to his place, service sucks, and the portion of dish looks like leftover
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I were looking for some dim sum close to South Riding and came across this place. We went late on a weekday night so not all items were available but we also wanted an entree to try so we went with the honey pine nut shrimp, they said they could give us walnuts per our request. All of the food was great! Prices were reasonable and we were surprised by the AMAZING service. We interacted with three people on their staff. They were all really kind and our server went above and beyond all evening. Overall, a fantastic experience and this will definitely be one of our new spots.

Yelp
I want to like Taste of Hong Kong. I get unsatisfied with every visit. I think they're crowded on Fridays and the weekend because people don't want to truck to Mui Kee or Full Kee in Falls Church for Cantonese cuisine. They serve clay pots, which initially made my mom so excited, until the disappointment kicked in. She's been missing Taishanese (dialect in southern part of China) food and the clay pots here are classic to that region. I ordered two different clay pots for her and she did not like either. I ordered my classic favorites of chow foon (wide rice noodles) with broccoli and beef, sweet & sour pork chops, and crispy spicy shrimp, scallops and squid. The chow foon was too saucy to my liking. The crispy spicy shrimp, scallops and squid was not flavorful and lacking spices. This dish had about four pieces of shrimp, two pieces of scallops, and the rest was squid. The sweet & sour pork tasted how it should but it's hard to mess that dish up. My friend enjoyed his orange chicken but it is also hard to mess that dish up. Besides, I'm not even sure if orange chicken is Chinese food. Descent Cantonese food. But I still prefer Full Kee and Mui Kee.

David L.

Yelp
Think about if Taste@Hong Kong did not exist in this area. Life would be less interesting and I think you would have to drive into Falls Church or to Maryland to find food like this.

Maddee J.

Yelp
I had a friend in town who had never tried dimsum and was looking for somewhere that might have options in the middle of a Wednesday. A coworkers of mine recommended taste at hongkong and I'm so glad she did! From the outside the restaurant is unassuming, on the inside a typical dimsum restaurant setup, nothing fancy but the duck on hangers tell you it's probably going to be authentic. We had much better service than what I'm used to and although we weren't there during regular dimsum hours we got to still order a nice sampling! It wasn't the best dimsum I've ever had but for the middle of a weekday I was pretty pleased! We also ordered Peking duck and that was incredible! Service was much better than what I'm used to at a dimsum restaurant. I will definitely be back again:)
