Convoy’s Fire-Shuttered China Max Reopening as New Chinese Restaurant | Eater San Diego

"Nearby Cantonese restaurant Taste of Hong Kong currently employs a chef and several staff members who previously worked at China Max, and its owners are among the group that bought the former China Max space." - Helen I. Hwang

I can’t recommend this place enough. The bourbon chicken is a masterpiece, and the pad Thai is always a go-to. Every time I leave, I feel full and satisfied, but never weighed down by preservatives—everything tastes fresh. The service can be a little reserved at first, but don’t let that throw you off; the waitresses are actually incredibly sweet, and as you become a regular, they warm up more and more. They do take a month off every year, and I genuinely miss them when they’re gone. Having been a loyal customer for seven years, I can confidently say that Taste of Hong Kong is easily one of the top three spots in Sarasota. I’ve never had a bad dish, and the consistency is unmatched. Highly recommend it!

We recently ordered takeout from Taste of Hong Kong in the Gulf Gate area, and it was an exceptional experience! We ordered the General’s Chicken, Chicken and Broccoli with Garlic Sauce, Beef Chow Fun with their homemade hand-stretched noodles, and Boneless Ribs. Every dish was freshly prepared and bursting with flavor. The General’s Chicken was perfectly crispy with just the right amount of sweetness and heat. The Chicken and Broccoli had a rich, savory garlic sauce that tied everything together beautifully. The Beef Chow Fun was a standout—the hand-stretched noodles were tender and had a great texture, truly a cut above the rest. The Boneless Ribs were tender, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. This is hands-down the best Chinese food we’ve had since moving to Sarasota. Highly recommend giving it a try if you’re in the area. We’ll definitely be back!

I don’t even wanna write a review about this place because it is kind of the best kept secret in town. This is San Francisco level Chinese food. I have to drive about 20 minutes to get there and pass about 15 other Chinese places and I happily do it.As I write this, I realize it’s been almost a week and I need it in my life right now.

The taste of Hong Kong is the best Chinese food in Sarasota or in the area. The ladies that run this restaurant are absolutely wonderful, very attentive to all their customers and always have a smile on their face. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for authentic Chinese food and the portions are huge.

(Read this entire review for the big picture) My wife heard good things about this place so we tried it about 6 months ago. The waitress seemed impatient and unwilling to talk about the dishes during the ordering process. We ordered a rice dish, sweet&sour chicken(sauce on the side), and the salt&pepper squid. My wife raved about the s&s chicken (I agree), but my s&p squid (a breaded fried dish) came out room temperature(after waiting a fairly long time for the food). It had to have just sat in the kitchen to be that low temp. Very disappointing. The manager(owner?) asked how the meal was. I described exactly what occurred and she just stared at me, and walked away. After that I refused to go back for months, but the wife really wanted to return so I agreed. This time I ordered the seafood chow fun. It was great; equal to what I’ve had in San Francisco and Philadelphia. We’ve been back several more times and have had excellently prepared meals. Service can be so so.

Let me preface this with I've probably only written 3-4 online reviews in my life; and, I've been a small business owner in this town for over 20 years so I know how bad reviews can hurt businesses. I really just feel like I have to warn people about this place. I've always wanted to try this place because I've heard nothing but good things about it. I wish I could say the same. I called to order a quart of the seafood fried rice and the pork dumpling appetizer. They told me it would be 40 minutes. 40 minutes for some fried rice and a few dumplings! I walked in 40 minutes later and I had to wait another 15 minutes. There was nobody really in the place. I finally get my food and I pay (somehow $7.99 + $14.99 added up to over $27 after tax. I'm still scratching my head over that). I get home starving after working a 12-hour shift and then waiting an hour to get my Chinese takeout. I dump the fried rice in my plate and there's four shrimp and two small scallops in a quart of rice. When I had called to order she asked me if I wanted it spicy or medium and I told her medium. I took my first bite and I felt like my face was going to melt off. It was literally the worst fried rice I've ever had in my life. Like, how can you mess up fried rice? It's just fried rice. I ate the 4 shrimp and two scallops and pitched the rest. The pork dumplings were basically generic like they got them from their distributor. I ate 2 of the 5. I don't even know what to say. I'm just super disappointed. Is there any good Chinese takeout in this town at all??

Great food, great service. I gave only 3 stars for atmosphere because the place is small. However they truly make the most of the space they have. This was our 3rd visit. It does not disappoint

Taste of Hong Kong has become one of my go-to spots for great Chinese food. I've been a few times now with friends and family (usually a group of 4-6), and every dish we've tried has been delicious. The fried rice and wonton soup are always solid, and the massive house soup is packed with flavor and perfect for sharing. We always dine in, and the experience is consistently great. The staff is friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is laid back. There's even a big fish tank when you walk in, which gives the place a bit of character. One of the things I love most is that every time I try something new, it ends up being hit. Can't wait to go back again and explore more of the menu!
