I had high hopes that Taste of India would be my new North Indian-food-in-a-stripmall gem, but it didn't impress. Also, I'm not 100% sure about how vegan-friendly its vegetarian dishes are, so if you're vegan, ask questions (I wish I had myself).
Their website doesn't allow online ordering, so I phoned in my order and had a friendly employee.
The vegetable samosa ($6) was okay but heavy on the cumin, leading to a lightly bitter aftertaste.
The bangan bhartha ($14) is an eggplant dish that's nearly always vegan by default in my experience, but here it tasted milky. Shame on me for making assumptions. In any case, I didn't like the flavor on this dish at all and gave up on it after a few bites. It was also swimming in oil.
The channa masala ($14) is also a dish that's typically vegan by default. Here it was oily and had a faint sweetness which didn't help at all. This dish was tolerable but not great. I assume it was vegan, but I am not 100% sure.
Lastly, the dal tarka ($12) had a nutty, subdued and roasted flavor which didn't pop, but didn't taste bad either.
The roti ($4) was good---not too thick and nice texture.
If you're looking for better North Indian food, I recommend India Palace or Dancing Ganesha in Minneapolis. India House in St. Paul and The Hyderabad Indian Grill in Columbia Heights are also good. Gorkha Palace in Minneapolis is also stellar, though it's Nepalese, which is similar to North Indian food, but not the same.
