Where to Find Jamaican Food Around D.C. | Eater DC

"Owner Howard Frampton hails from St. Catherine Parish in Jamaica and has helmed his restaurant since 2003. He’s since moved it twice, citing gentrification surrounding the the original location in Brookland. Taste of Jamaica has been on Georgia Avenue since June 2016, and Frampton says customers crave his curry shrimp, a red bean soup he makes with chicken and turkey, and fricasseed chicken." - Lenore Adkins

Been coming here for years and this year customers service terrible. White lady took my order than for got to call my order because person before brought 5 dinners. 30 minutes later I go to counter and food cold. Jerk chicken extra extra hot now yall need a mild sauce. Than I tip her. I will not be back I’ll rather try ever restaurant in Cleveland too I find my new weekly spot. This not it anymore

Google
Food is really good! Always fresh and flavorful! What makes it a 3 star review, is the atmosphere of the restaurant. Customers are still not allowed to dine in or use restrooms. Management requests that patrons wait in the lobby for their food after placing their order. Customers aren’t allowed to call orders in ahead of time or sit down and wait for it to be done. Just a tad bit offensive and unwelcoming! Gives “give me your money and get out” vibes!

Google
Love love love it here hands down my #1 jamaican resturaunt to go to. I had fried jerk, which is always good, not too spice ,but have a nice spice to it. My favorite is the BBQ jerk and they only have it on Tuesday. Everything have flavor unlike other jamaican resturaunts I've visited and food was tasteless and supper HOT. You will not be disappointed.

Google
Delicious! We got 2 Jerks and 1 Oxtail meal. The meals came with red beans and rice with a side of steamed cabbage. Take out only though. The Jerk chicken was juicy, tender, and spicey. The Oxtails was ok, not as tender as the jek, but it was still tasted good. Watch out for the bones though. The cabbage was tasty and well seasoned. Finally the red beans and rice was my favorite. It was a mixture of sweet, spicy, and savory. The best red beans and rice I've ever had. It kinda expensive but worth it. I'll be coming back - (2) Jerk Chicken meal for $15 ea - Oxtails meal for $20. - plus 15% tip Totally came out to $67

Google
Wow my grandmother and I have been looking for a good place to eat for a while now. It seems likes nothing is good anymore and we were starting to lose hope but then we stumbled upon this restaurant and the food was absolutely amazing. Everything had great flavor and tasted fresh!

Simply amazing. This food has so much love in it! Special. Get yourself in here!!

Google
Great food, oxtails, plantains, rice and beans, meat pies , cabbage, jerk fried chicken. I've been multiple times in '23, they haven't missed. I haven't had many oxtails over the years. After tasting TOJ I've tried about 3-4 other places. TOJ is still at the top. I have a few more to retry on Harvard. If you're close stop in and get some food. Oh, 3 stars for the atmosphere because you still can't sit at the booths, Nov '23. Place is CLEAN tho, maybe they want to keep it that way. Edit: 1/23/24 Additional star for the services. Walked in after 4 others I was in and out with a few dinners in under 10 minutes . Oxtails are still the freshest!

Google
Amazing first experience. This was the Jerk chicken I had been waiting for. Juicy, tender, with the perfect amount of spice. Rice and beans, steamed cabbage, and plantains complimented the dish perfectly. This restaurant will now be a part of my family's eating out rotation. Great food, great staff, comfortable atmosphere. Well done!

Yelp
If you're looking for the BEST JAMAICAN FOOD IN CLEVELAND then you have to try Taste of Jamaica. My go to order is the Large Jerk Chicken with all White Meat, White Rice and Cabbage. It's absolutely delicious!!!! Although the location is small and only offers take out, the service is great and the food is amazing every time! The prices are reasonable and while you are there make sure you grab a beverage and a jerk chicken patty!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Great food and reasonably priced. You can't dine in right now but the to go wait wasn't long at all

Jel R.

Yelp
custome service sucks they serve old oxtails hard black meat your dog wouldn't even eat they are foul and need to be shut down immediately i will be calling the health department
google avatar

Yelp
The jerk chicken was hot and spicy! I recommend getting food from here. I will go back soon

Yelp
I'm in Cleveland for the weekend and stopped into TOJ last night. The place is cute and observing COVId-19 guidelines are in effect. I ordered a large jerk chicken and a small ox tail. I got cabbage and rice and beans as my sides. I wish there was less rice. The cabbage were mushy. The food was ok. The ox tail was good but not meaty. The jerk chicken was spicy. I liked how it was cut up. The prices are reasonable. They cooked the food pretty fast.

Yelp
First time there and was very impressed with my food. I sample 3 of the patties (beef, curry chicken & jerk beef) and they were very good. Baked not fried and tasty. Also had the jerk chicken w/rice and beans which was very good. Staff were nice. I recommend going.

Yelp
A most definitely five-star Deedlious Jamming Jamaican Restaurante serving the immediate East side of Cleveland with the authentic taste of the Island muh
google avatar

Rich L.

Yelp
My friend recommended this business as the best Jamaican restaurant in Cleveland. I've been there eight times since his recommendation. Food is very nice and they always have my favorite: curry and white. Tasha at the front desk is very nice and always has a pleasant smile.

Yelp
I went to Ohio and discover this little gem in a strip mall. It's a small take out place that gets quite BUSY We ordered and waited for our food to come and ended up being pleasantly surprised. The jerk chicken was spicy but delicious and the cabbage nice and tender. The jamaican beef patty was FULL of flavor. But the lips were burning so a bottle of water was necessary. Definitely worth the visit
google avatar

DiannA B.

Yelp
The food was nasty. I ordered two large oxtail dinners $20/dinner, it was all of two oxtails cut small. In one dinner I ordered double cabbage it was tasteless and watery. On top of bad food the lady at the counter was very rude first hanging up the phone in my face when I called and asked a question, I blew that off and still went into the establishment she was even worse. This is not a true Jamaican food establishment representation. The customer service sucks. Don't waste your money.

Yelp
Visited this place for the first time yesterday. I will definitely be back. I had curry goat, rice & peas and steamed cabbage. My aunt had jerk chicken with the same sides. The servings were fairly generous and the flavors amazing. The person taking the order was friendly. I hummed and wiggled happily through my meal.

Yelp
Taste of Jamaica never disappoints. The food is so fresh and plentiful. Eating their recipes takes me back to my Grandfather's cooking. His Grandparents settled into America before he was born and made sure he knew all of his native dishes. Ordering was painless. I called my order in and it was ready relatively quickly. I decided on Oxtails, Cabbage, and Rice. While the cabbage is not the spicy Jamaican cabbage loaded with scotch bonnets, it is still flavorful and delicious. I love that there are dumplings in their gravy as I would expect. I recommend Taste of Jamaica whenever you're craving that signature island flavor.

Sharaun F.

Yelp
My experience was great. The atmosphere, food and staff were better than expected. My Curry chicken was so good, and a little spicy, but not too much. I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Gracie W.

Yelp
Amazing. Jerk chicken is great, the curry goat was even better, and the cabbage is cooked perfectly and has good flavor
google avatar

Steve R.

Yelp
Picked up three meat pies (beef, jerk, and curry) and a side of rice and beans with brown gravy. It was all tasty and fresh. I will certainly pick up again. Pro tip, place your order then go shopping at Aldi. Your food will be ready when you are done.
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite spot for Jamaican food. The staff is so friendly and the food comes out pretty fast. I love the curry goat & the jerk chicken. Sometimes they run out of Plantain but cabbage is a great substitute.
google avatar

Troy M.

Yelp
Straight forward menu. Tastes great. Friendly. Don't have dine in right now (April 2021), but food travels well.
google avatar

Carm R.

Yelp
Authentic Jamaican food. I tried the Jerk Shrimp, rice and peas and steamed cabbage. It was spicy, hot and delicious. The Taste of Jamaica is a must try!

Yelp
I was in town for a wedding and had a craving for something different than the umpteen pizza joints around. I ordered the standard jerk chicken and plantains. Good flavor and heat. It was pretty busy on a Saturday afternoon and had to wait about 15 minutes.
google avatar

Tamika L.

Yelp
Hearty portions and great flavor are my main takeaways from a wonderful take out experience. This was my first time stopping in since they moved from the mall years ago. The decor is perfect and very inviting! I felt like I was walking into a beachside cabin in Montego Bay. Soft reggae music was playing as I entered. The food smelled great and I was quickly able to place my order. There are a few tables and booths, enough to comfortably eat inside. I would consider that next time, but had already planned to take this order home. The staff was pleasant and after a short wait, my order was ready. When I got home, I was surprised to see just how much food I got. Thumbs up for flavor and serving size. It heats up well and considering that I had leftovers, a great value as well

Yelp
I have been meaning to try Taste of Jamaica for a while, tried last week but they were close to closing and wouldn't make any shrimp. Since the power was out at home, I figured I would give it a try. Located in a strip of stores at the intersection of Mayfield and Richmond Roads, TOJ is a clean little shop with a bit of the island feel. Casual with reggae music playing it could be a cool place to hang. You come in and order at the counter at the back, the menu is up on video screens. I was a bit surprised when I asked about the Jerk Shrimp and was told that they don't make it. I ended up ordering the Curry Shrimp with the rice and beans and a side of cabbage. I also asked about a cup of water and was told that they don't have any cups. After about a 15 minute wait, the food came up, you have to pick it up at the counter and it is packed in styrofoam to go, even if you are eating in. For $13 I got 10 good sized shrimp, a large portion of rice and cabbage. The food I got was good and well prepared, but while the flavors were nice, there was a lack of sizzle. I love the food at Bratenhal Kitchen and found that TOJ just didn't have the same kind of flavors. It was good, but not great. My opinion of Taste of Jamaica is that it is a nice place with decent food, but if I want Jamaican food I have a better option which is a bit further, but I am willing to take the extra time for more flavor.

Yelp
I have NEVER gone to this establishment and NOT received friendly service, great food and fair pricing. It's authentic Jamaican food and prepared fresh! I have recommended Taste of Jamaica to my friend and family. Please note they are closed on Monday.

Yelp
Taste of Jamaica was a welcome treat for our family. We had jerk chicken, rice and peas (beans), suateed cabbage, fried plantains, beef patties, chicken curry patties and Ting. Thumbs up on everything! I wanted to try the escovitch red snapper but they were out. The restaurant was clean and busy. The young woman who took my order was friendly and We will be back!
google avatar

Aaron R.

Yelp
At $10 the jerk chicken came in large proportion. Definitely more than one meal in the box! Fat pile of beans n rice along with a couple fried plantains was straight smoke! Value.
google avatar

Danté P.

Yelp
This is a decent Jamaican food restaurant that will satisfy your island vibes. I got the whole red snapper with Oxtail gravy with rice and peas and cabbage and my aunt got the jerk chicken plate! Great flavors would come back again! I was very satisfied with my meal the soft patties and the ting that complements the meal right on!
google avatar

Helene F.

Yelp
Legit Jamaican fare! I must warn you the Jerk Chicken is spicy (probably too spicy for young children) but if you can handle the heat I bet you will finish it all in one sitting. The chicken is thoroughly seasoned. One can see and taste every bit of the allspice rub they've worked into every cavity and the result is very savory chicken :) The interior of this restaurant is well kept and their open kitchen has a very clean presentation. I recommend a visit!
google avatar

Aja W.

Yelp
I asked for a large curry chicken with cabbage only and this is what I got a whole box of cabbage and a corner of chicken which also had carrots and potatoes in that corner so don't be fooled this is not all chicken in this corner do not spend your hard earned money here if they treat their customers like this there was no need to rob me for $15 for a corner of chicken. The food taste OK not too many complaints there today this time however they just robbed me for $15 for a box of cabbage. I don't care if the food is good it's not gonna be good if there's nothing in the box for you to eat. I will not be going back.

Marquis F.

Yelp
I ordered the escovitch red snapper with plantain and red beans and rice. The dish was absolutely horrible. The fish was a rubbery chunk of gristle and fat. The plantains were very hard and dry. The cost of this dish was $25. I called and spoke to the owner. I told him that I wasn't pleased with the dish and why. He told me that no one had ever complained about the food and there wasn't anything he could do. He said that there was nothing wrong with my food, and he wasn't going to refund my money. He was very rude. I wouldn't recommend patronizing this establishment because the owner was unwilling to make amends for a meal that was below par. Escovitch Snapper

Yelp
Having visited the beautiful island of Jamaica many times prior to the Pandemic, I was longing for the true Jerk experience, when I read the reviews and thought I'd give it a try. I was not disappointed. The jerk chicken was tender, although a bit spicier than I've ever experienced. The cabbage was tender and mixed well. My only drawback was the rice and peas. The rice and seasoning were perfect, but my issue was with the "peas" they appeared to be pinto beans and were a bit mushy. I don't ever recall this in Jamaica as they were always peas, darker red and semi firm. The portion sizes are large! Pricing is very reasonable. The service was great and very friendly. I enjoyed listening to the Caribbean music while waiting for my order as they don't have any dine in features at the moment. Would definitely go back if in the area again and opportunity was there.
google avatar

Rahsaan C.

Yelp
Served me 2 cold beef patty that sat on the counter for 20 minutes while they prepared the rest my food. Argued with me when I asked for fresh hot beef patties or to give me my money back for the cold ones. Eventually refund me my money. Will not be returning.
google avatar

Pallavi T.

Yelp
It's currently my favorite place to eat at in Mayfield. If I can eat here everyday I surely would. They food is always fresh and consistent in terms of taste. We've been there 4 times already and we look forward to going again for sure. Our favorite is their curry goat with rice and peas and plantains.

Yelp
Fantastic experience! Grew up in South Florida, surrounded by Jamaican restaurants, and I go to Jamaica quite often. This place is as authentic as you can find. Perfect size menu, nice people, very clean, amazing flavor, and reasonable prices!!! I had the Oxtail with rice&beans and cabbage! It was fantastic and the "small" portion was huge! My wife had a chicken patty and the fried plantains, and we both loved everything. Very good quality food and products. They also have different sodas from Jamaica including Ginger Beer. We will be definitely coming back here. Everything you could ask for in a first visit!!!
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
Incredible Jamaican food. Just the right amount of heat and big flavor. I had the goat with rice and plantains. Fun soda selections like grapefruit and cream soda to cool the burn. Nice atmosphere. Little wait for food but WELL worth the wait.
google avatar

Sharon M.

Yelp
Curry Chicken, cabbage, rice and peas have been my staple for over a year. I usually accompany it with a chicken patty and ginger beer. Nice atmosphere. Steady stream of patrons. Not too hard on the pocketbook. Generous portions. There is one thing that irks the heck out of me, the Daily Specials! Why advertise it and never have any prepared? I've been there at 4P and told they've run out of the special or I just missed it, but the place doesn't close until 8P?!? Suggestion to the owner, write the special on a chalkboard then erase it if it's gone. Please reconsider permanently posting it on the board or in your menus if it's a fluke. The people at the back of line or "late" comers or who've traveled some distance past other similar restaurants to your restaurant on a Wednesday evening thinking they'll finally get jerk fried chicken after a few missed attempts are none the wiser that there was ever a special to begin with. Sorry I digressed, did I say the brown stew is equally delicious? It's usually prepared when we arrive.

Yelp
I've always seen pictures of food from this place and vowed I'd go check it out someday. That day finally came ! And overall it was fantastic. They serve huge portions that met what you pay in price which are very reasonable as well. Pictured below are three different type of dinners, jerk chicken, curry chicken and ox tail.!my favorite by far was the jerk chicken. As avid spicy food goer, I must say I would always tend to lean towards the spicier dish. However, this is definitely up there with some of best jerk chicken I've had. This place and a place called Pineapple Eddies in Erie Pa are definitely type two on my list for jerk chicken. Overall all three meals were great and I'll definitely advise any whose wants something new or Jamaican cuisine to stop by!
google avatar

Jeffrey L.

Yelp
I was craving Mediterranean food and ended up choosing this place instead because I saw the curry goat. Jerk chicken is a 8.6/10! Curry goat is a 8.5/10 (a bit salty).
google avatar

Anneka G.

Yelp
Ordered oxtail, was delicious . Smh Mein, with limited time between "Taste of Jamaica" n "the airport". I was able to walk in place my order, with in mins my order was ready. Customer service was welcoming n pleasant. Nice setting!!! Portion size was just right said (greedy belizean gal).

Brian G.

Yelp
This place is amazing. I love the food from here and I tried lots like the curry goat, curry chicken, stewed chicken, oxtail and both chicken and beef patties. Love it all. However, this time I wanted something different and wanted to try the fish and I decided on stewed fish. When I asked for that, the woman probably hearing my American accent said, "The fish comes with the head and tail." I responded with "As it should." I have lived among Caribbean cultures for a long time, not to mention my wife is Caribbean, so that is how fish is always served. When I put my fork in the flesh of the fish and tasted it, my eyes rolled back and all I could think of is that this is the best fish I have ever had in my life. It took me back to the island. It was so good. The vegetables called ground provisions, in the gravy was to die for. This was the best plate of food I ever had! This was the best dish I tasted from TOJ! Authentic, delicious and a must try!!!!!
google avatar

Brian W.

Yelp
This was such a wonderful meal my family had today. It was a cold, snowy day and we alll wanted something comforting and we thought to try Taste Of Jamaica for the first time. We were all so happy we made this decision. All three of us got large Jerk Chicken meals with steamed cabbage and rice and beans and we got a large order of the frIed plantains. Everything was so delicious and just perfect. Plus, the lady who took our order was very polite, friendly, and seemed to be really happy. This was our first trip here but it won't be our last. If you like Jamaican food, this is about as goodd as you can find anywhere!!
google avatar

Kristin R.

Yelp
Jerk chicken is legit with just enough spice. Unexpectedly went after work around 6:30 (they close at 8) when I went in hey were sold out almost everything but jerk chicken, Curry chicken, white rice, and fish/shrimp. You would think I would be upset with limited options but to me that was a good sign and I wanted jerk chicken anyway. I was very pleased....will be back for a beef patty and dumpling Saturday
google avatar

Kanak C.

Yelp
Been going here for over ten years and David has continued to maintain the amazing flavors in his jerk and curries. Don't forget to add a patty to your order. If you can't get to it along with your main meal, save it for a snack. You won't regret it!

Angie E.

Yelp
I went to the Tastes of Jamaica today, I ordered a large oxtail stew with cabbage and beans and rice. Let me tell you I was in seven heaven, the cabbage was cooked just right not mushy at all, the oxtails had plenty of meat on each bone and it was fully cooked and it melted in my mouth, the rice and beans were excellent as well. The whole meal was far be on what others have said in the past, you did not need any seasons at all the food was seasoned just right. I will be returning again. Customer service was excellent, the workers made me feel wanted and they wanted my business, they were friendly; you know when you are welcome here not like some other places where the workers make you feel that you are a burden. And yes they do practice COVID. Thank You for Taste of Jamaica, go see them you will not be disappointed!!! 3-5-2021

Yelp
If I could eat here every day I probably would. The jerk chicken is slightly sweet which is what I like. I always order it with extra gravy on the rice and a side of plantains if they have them. Definitely my go to now for Jamaican Food.
google avatar

Kasey R.

Yelp
This place is fire! Authentic Jamaican food if you're looking to try something different. Me and my boyfriend are addicted to the patties! Clean restaurant & friendly staff. Definitely recommend this place!
google avatar

Allison W.

Yelp
Excellent Jamaican food. We had the chicken curry patty, the jerk chicken, the brown stew chicken and the plantains and it was all so good. As others have said the decor is really nice and inviting. Great experience. We can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Debra A.

Yelp
Food was good. Surprised the daily specials were priced the same as reg menu items available everyday - what's "special" about that!?
google avatar

Michael W.

Yelp
I loved it. Had the Jerk Chicken with plantains beans and rice. A little sweeter than I'm used to, but plenty spicy and done right. I usually reserve a 5 for catching up at least twice, but the steady stream of patrons, the wait time on orders, cleanliness of the bathrooms, and that I was there from 2-3:30 PM on a Wednesday, tells me all I need to know. They are serious about this and not going anywhere but a larger or better spot if they want it. I plan to hit this spot again next week. Maybe every week. Loved it.
google avatar

Srebrenica L.

Yelp
I honestly don't know why it took me so long to check this place out! If you're looking for authentic eats, this is the place to go. I went in on Sunday to get a Jerk chicken dinner with fried plantains. My heart was literally set on it. Since arrived so late in the evening they were out of both jerk and fried plantains. I was crushed. However they offered the brown stew which I never had but I figured I'd check it out. So glad I did! The brown stew chicken was AMAZING. Rice and cabbage was also of good quality. I'll definitely be visiting again to get my fried plantains
google avatar

Yelp
Wednesdays are a busy day!! LoL They are out of food.....cant be mad about that though, the food here is really good!! The Oxtails and Curry Goat will make you hurt yourself.... Weekly specials are delicious!!
