i've tried taste of old street twice, and we were seated quickly both times, although the restaurant can get full quickly because the space is small. service can be a little slow when it's busy since there's only one person in the front, and i assume the kitchen isn't big either. it takes a while for the food to come out, especially the skewers. parking can be difficult to find because it's on a busy street, but there's street parking and neighborhood parking nearby.
- pig's ear with chili oil (5/5): one of the specials for the day! it was served cold and had a salty chili flavor, with a good kick that was slightly numbing. there was a lot of raw garlic, which i could still taste afterward. really good portion!
- wonton mix with chili oil (4.5/5): really good savory sauce that wasn't too spicy. they tasted more like pork dumplings than wontons, since the filling contained so much chinese cabbage
- beef pancake rolls (4.5/5): great beef pancake roll with lots of green onions inside and throughout the batter. the sweet hoisin-like sauce was tasty, and i loved the thick chewy texture of the pancake, although it could've used more beef
- lamb skewers (5/5): so juicy and flavorful! they came with a chili salt on the side, which was savory and not too spicy. they were fairly small skewers but so good!
- dandan dry noodles (3/5): overall had a good savory peanut and sesame sauce, which was slightly nutty but not spicy at all, even though we ordered it spicy. the dish was a little bland and could've used more sauce or beef, but i loved the chewy noodles
- beef rib noodle soup (4/5): good hearty and meaty flavor that wasn't very spicy. i loved the thick chewy noodles, but you can order the dish with thin noodles or rice noodles instead. there was a good amount of veggies. we were given two beef ribs, but both had barely any meat. also, the meat was tough and didn't fall off the bone
- create your own spicy pot with pork belly skewers, chicken hearts skewers, fish tofu, bean curd sheet, and sweet potato noodles (4/5): this was the spiciest dish, although the broth was only slightly spicy and a little oily. my favorite skewers were the chicken hearts because i liked the chewy texture. the pork belly was tasty and tender, and the fish tofu was pretty standard. the bean curd sheets got soggy quickly and soaked up the flavor of the soup. the noodles were good, but i wish there were more. the skewers were also small
overall, taste of old street serves really tasty dishes, but most of them are a bit expensive for the portion, especially the skewers. i also think a lot of the spicy food could be spicier. i like the variety in the menu, but the stars of the show are definitely the old chengdu skewers. i would definitely come back just for those!
