"Starting as a food truck in 2014, Taste Of The Caribbean now has two separate locations in South LA, plus a robust catering service. The owner and chef, Bernard James, is originally from Guyana and brings a slightly different flavor profile to his jerk than you normally find in LA. It’s sweet, citrus-y, and outrageously delicious. While you’re definitely getting the chicken, be sure to pick up some curry shrimp, jerk salmon, and Carribean roti as well. Cash only. photo credit: Eugene Lee" - Brant Cox

Best Jamaican Spot in Town! This place is everything! From the moment we walked in, the vibe was so warm and welcoming. The staff treated us like family, and to top it off, they surprised me with a birthday cake even though mine’s not for a few more days! Talk about thoughtful. Now, let’s talk about the food. The sorrel? I don’t know what kind of magic they put in that, but it’s hands-down better than my aunt’s (sorry, Auntie!). The cabbage was on point perfectly seasoned and just the right texture. And don’t even get me started on the plantains we literally fought over them at the table. So, so good. Plus, the portion sizes were HUGE and filling, definitely worth every bite. If you’re looking for something to try, I highly recommend the curry chicken so flavorful and tender. If you’re craving real Jamaican food, this spot is a MUST. Can’t wait to come back again!

I love this place💗💗 Couldn’t recommend it enough even if I tried. First off, loved the interior. Casual, chill with Caribbean vibe atmosphere. Plenty of TVs so if there’s a game on, you can totally come here to watch it. Parking’s not too bad; there’s a lot though things can get a bit tight. Our server was super sweet and responsive (tipped him well). The music was on point and nothing played had crude language (which I greatly appreciate because I want to bring my mom here next time). The food? OMG 😩😩😩 Got the curry goat. Meat was so tender, falling off the bone. The spice level of the curry was perfect (though I would want it a pinch hotter😏). The cabbage was perfect, not salty at all 👍🏾 The coco bread was HUUUUGE! I wasn’t expecting that much. It’s definitely something you can spit with another person. They have take out, but why do that? Stay in, eat, and enjoy it as soon as it comes out. A+++ I’m coming back again before the month’s out 🫶🏾💓💞💕💖

I mean WHAT A COOL PLACE! An unassuming outside with a very fun inside🤩...great atmosphere and hey, the food ain't bad either. Received some very pleasant customer service from a sweet young lady and some info about the place, the owner and the events they have...especially the fact that they are a Late Night Spot which is clutch. I ordered the Jerk Salmon salad to go and it was very very tasty; great seasoning and wonderfully cooked with a little crisp on the outside...just how I like my fish. Definitely going back to try more options. A must try if you like Caribbean food👌.

If you’ve never tried Caribbean food, you’re missing out on one of the world’s most vibrant and soulful culinary experiences. I recently had the chance to dive into a full Caribbean spread at Taste of the Caribbean. The food is a must-try. Bold flavors, fresh ingredients, and soulful cooking that tells a story. Highly recommended for anyone who loves spice, comfort, and culture on a plate.

Google
Terrible service and food. Came for a quick bite with a date but was not happy after leaving. Girl at the counter kept talking low volume like she didn't want to be there so I had to listen carefully.Spent $27 on 4 beef patties that are thinner than a hot pocket but still had to pay extra for some hot sauce. Talk about being cheap

Google
SOOOOO GOOD, I had expectations but wow! Loved the flavor and service inside. Visit as soon as you can. Cutest little set up inside too.

Cute spot, fresh flowers, really nice menu design... chill vibe. Food didn't actually give authentic tho... If you're looking for taste of home...pass. But highly recommend for folks just wanting to dip their toes in Jamaican food.

The staff was inviting as soon as I opened the door. The food was fresh, prepared upon ordering, and above all very flavorful. The staff were polite and checked on us periodically. There is soooooo much to comment on. But definitely check out this restaurant. I promise you won’t be disappointed. I am anticipating rejoining my family in Ocho Rios. Also, I would recommend my favorite…curry Goat meal with plantains.

Yelp
Food has potential, asked for bbq sauce for my delivery order of jerk wings and jerk chicken and didn't receive it. Such a disappointment. Beef pattie was great!

Nia L.

Yelp
I love that this spot has late hours. I've been to the one in LB; but I'm assuming this is the flagship. Nice size restaurant, lots of tvs, cool music w/strip mall parking. There's a permit sign regarding an alcohol permit, so I'm assuming they'll be able to serve drinks soon. The spicy curry chicken patties were amazing! I had the jerk chicken and request dark meat. It was okay; but the jerk shrimp is still my fav.

Ace C.

Yelp
As far as Caribbean options here in LA this Hollywood local gets 5 stars from me. Mainly for the food flavors, (rice and beans seasonings are on point) great portions, welcoming layout and friendly family of employees. The Musical Playlist sets the mood and the tv's had games on during our visit on a Sunday, 7ish. Maaaad Chiiiill Mon.

Yelp
The food is very meh , no flavor it's just spicy Food taste like nothing .. the service and ambiance is good.

Janet M.

Yelp
Open very late at night, until 4 AM. The service was fast. The jerk chicken was on the spicier side. I had a jerk chicken Caesar salad--it wasn't anything spectacular, but I chose it because I wanted a lighter meal. I can't speak for the other dishes.

Porch G.

Yelp
Discovered this place recently and I was not disappointed Delicious chicken curry with roti and the sorrel hibiscus drink wqs really great

Yelp
This place is extremely good! To whoever is in the area do not hesitate to try it out. My gf and I got the Jerk Chicken meal and a side of plantains, and on another occasion i came back and got the beef patty with cocoa bread, 10 out of 10!! The food was served steaming! Everything so fresh, good and tasty. Although the chicken was way too spicy for me it was perfect for my gf. Idk how the cook makes the cabbage but the cabbage taste was literally soo good and tasty, rice and peas yummy as well. The beef patty was great, the crust was crispy and the cocoa bread was warm and just made my stomach smile, it is a bit spicy though. The service was immaculate! As i mentioned before the chicken was too spicy, the server offered me another plate of chicken on the house. She was so sweet, her energy was amazing greeting us upon walking in, and she made sure we were good throughout our dining in experience, her service made me feel cozy! The inside of the place also has a cozy vibe to it as well, and in addition to all of that you can enjoy some good music and vibe while u eat a good comforting meal! We will definitely be back for more!

Yelp
I've eaten here before and not totally been impressed but this is the first time I decided to do a review. FIRE FIRE FIRE!!! Jerk chicken, rice and beans, cabbage all fire!!!! Plantains were perfect as well with the end tips a little crunchy. Great job on getting me to come back.

Eternanda F.

Yelp
Listen! I've been in LA for 3.5 years and I have to admit I've complained about finding Jamaican food.... UNTIL TODAY! I got the jerk chicken meal with a side of oxtail (because yes you can have two meats on one entree by adding a side!) and my friend got the Rasta pasta with oxtail. We literally were in the car like planning to be as honest as possible and boy were we blown away! Great taste! Perfectly marinated and seasoned and the owner even has his own sauce! Don't walk, RUN! Best Jamaican I've had in LA hands down!

Sebrena T.

Yelp
We came here on a Sunday evening and chose to dine in. We seated ourselves. There was plenty of space and nice decor. The only complaint that I have is the flowers attracting flies and fruit flies. We ordered the curry goat plate, oxtail plate, jerk chicken plate and a side of festival. The plates came fast but the festival never arrived. The jerk chicken was cooked well. It was sweet with a slight spice. The curry goat was filled with bones (eat with caution) but it was delicious. The oxtail was great. The curry goat and oxtail came with potatoes in the stew. Very good. We needed to request a refill for our cup of water. When it was time to pay, I told our waitress that the festival didn't come and she told me that the kitchen didn't cook it. Did she tell me that at any point and time, nope. MAJOR SIDE EYE...on top of the fact that the girl told us that she couldn't remove the festival from the bill and had to give us $6 in cash. SIDE EYE.

Dennis T.

Yelp
Had dinner with a friend at TOTC on a Tuesday night. The restaurant was fairly empty so seating was not a problem. Decor is nice and the restaurant has plenty of TVs; just in case you're tryna catch the game. We shared 2 patties (beef and curry), oxtail, festival, and sorrel. Festival was forgotten but it came out quickly after reminding the waitress.

Serena L.

Yelp
You HAVE to get the oxtails. A lot of restaurants tend to overcook the oxtails and they turn out really dry, but the way they make it here is fatty, juicy, and so tender. I ordered it to-go and it held up really well on the way home. The person at the counter was nice too. I'll be coming straight to here the next time I'm craving Caribbean oxtails. Parking is relatively easy since it's in a strip mall with a wide parking lot.

Hanoch Z.

Yelp
I love that Chef Bernard supports the community and makes some tasty food. I've been going for years and enjoy the jerk chicken and curry chicken patties. I'm happy for his success and expansion to Long Beach but unfortunately, the quality at the original location has suffered as a result. I can't make Dahlpuri to save my life so I'm happy to hand over my hard earned dollars for some. Until today. There was practically no daal in either of the rotis I bought. They were light and flavorless and I'm disappointed I drove through rush hour traffic to be let down. I understand businesses have to make money and pay their employees a fair wage but skimping on the daal and charging the same price doesn't sit right with me. Hopefully I caught them on a not so good Thursday and I'll return but if this is the quality I can expect then I'll have to brave the trip to Inglewood.

Tanya S.

Yelp
The lovely lady who served us was so kind. She was patient with us as we asked questions. The drinks they make and bottle from scratch are delicious. The food is amazing. So much flavor and just smooth. The chicken does have bones in heads up to those who do not like bone in chicken. The location has a small parking area so it can be complicated to park not a make or break just a far warning. Also the inside is smaller, but nice tables and good vibes. Just over all great. They are working on getting their liquor license. Cheers to that. Want to come back again sometime. Thanks

Sara R.

Yelp
My family is creole so I'm always looking for extra spice and in LA it's mad hard to find. This spot is right around the corner from my crib so I stopped in on a whim. The service was really attentive and the vibe of the spot is great. I'm a vegetarian so I was happy to see some good options! I got the jerk cauliflower and was not disappointed. Will definitely be going back! Try it out!

Nikki T.

Yelp
Okay...came by twice in the last 2 week. Walked in, you place your order and they bring your food in to-go containers so that's cool, if you don't finish your food take it home!! Easy peasy!! We've tried the ox tail, jerk shrimp, jerk chicken, jerk salmon, coco bread and plantains. Alllll were DELISH!!! The second time we went, was an hour before they closed and they ran out of oxtail and pasta, but we will try again the next time we go for the RASTA PASTA. Definitely will be returning!! Seating is about 4 tables inside with some Caribbean music playing, also few tables outside if you want an outdoorsy feel. All good!!

Patty O.

Yelp
Accidentally found this gem! The waitress was great! So friendly and accommodating. The food was amazing. A must is the garlic hint chicken and the jerk shrimp. Had an oxtail to go for my husband and he loved it. Going back there 4 days!

Johnny L.

Yelp
Went during New Years Eve and was welcomed to great hospitality despite being so late! The plantains were amazing and the jerk chicken fire! Try their Ting!

Sunshine C.

Yelp
I was talking to one of my clients today about needing some good seasoning and spice in my life. My boyfriend read my mind because he ordered some jerk chicken plates and patty's from Taste of the Caribbean and WOW, I can't wait to have it again. My stomach is still warm thinking about it (just ate like 30 mins ago). Everything was delicious, the jerk had the spice! We walked into pick up our order and the space is truly a Caribbean oasis, I know it be poppin on the weekends (opened till 4 on the weekends). The woman at the front was so warm and hospitable, and even gave us some complementary patties. Highly highly recommend the beef and the curry chicken (I was craving curry and this hit the spot). Patty was perfect, flaky. So scrumptious. It hit the spot so good! If you're craving something hearty, with some spice and made with love, check this place out.

Yelp
Date of Visit: January 3, 2025 Taste of the Caribbean LA I've liked this restaurant in the past, but today's experience didn't meet my expectations. I brought a friend to dine in, and we ordered the jerk chicken pasta and the oxtails with rice and peas, along with cabbage. The flavors were good, but the meals were disappointing. The oxtails had way more bone than meat, and the jerk chicken pasta was filled with bones, fat, and gristle. For $70, it felt like we paid mostly for bones, which was frustrating. On the positive side, the service was great. The young lady who helped us was kind and attentive. I didn't complain at the time, but if I return, I'd expect better portions of meat for the price. This place has potential, but today's visit fell short.

Gloria A.

Yelp
Food was on point and the service was excellent. Will soon come back! I had the Oxtail Rasta Pasta and it was

Matt L.

Yelp
Nah let's not be LA about it. This place is a Godsend. The ancestors would Yelp this 5 stars too, I'm sure. I rolled in with some friends around 2 AM convinced I was about to find a food truck or fake spot but sure enough - music was bumping, security was out front, and this incredibly kind woman hooked it up at the counter. Jerk chicken and veggie patty was amazing. To have such a quality patty at that time of night is a five star experience alone. But also, homie who made the Afrobeats mix was playing some cuts and had us groovin the whole time. Beautiful plating from Chef Bernard, who came out while we were eating and introduced himself. Him and his team clearly have a vision, and anytime im in the neighborhood and need some spice in my life I'll be coming by.

John L.

Yelp
Very pleasant experience with excellent food, service, and a friendly staff. If you like Caribbean food, this place has great food and an excellent vibe.

John C.

Yelp
Taste of the Caribbean in LA, originally a food truck and now a brick-and-mortar establishment, offers a distinct Caribbean culinary experience. The chef, Bernard James from Guyana, infuses his dishes with a unique flavor profile. Some of the standout dishes I enjoyed include curry shrimp, jerk salmon, and Caribbean roti. The jerk seasoning here is sweet with citrusy notes, setting it apart from the usual jerk flavors found in LA. This restaurant is a go-to spot for those craving authentic Caribbean tastes in the city. I will note that I am friends with the owner's two children, Bernard and Briana, but it is genuinely a fantastic establishment with great ambiance, service, and menu offerings.

Clifton O.

Yelp
Visited on a whim when I was traveling to LA, seeking something familar. Beautiful vibes when you walk in, between the plant setup and the chill r&b/Afrocentric music. From walking in to sitting down and ordering, the service was some of the most accommodating I had received in the entire area. It definitely scratched the itch for a desirable spot that makes all appreciators of Caribbean food/culture feel at home. Make sure you order a beverage though, bc the Jerk meals will fill you up and they are Spicy. My lips were still buzzing when it was time to go, but I was satisfied. Will be back the second I next set foot on the West Coast

Monique B.

Yelp
My family is Jamaican and I'm from New York. L.A. is a tough city to find great food from home but TOTC was on point. The Ackee and Salt Fish hit the spot will definitely be back!

Anna B.

Yelp
I went here with a friend for dinner and the flavors and spices were excellent! The servers were kind and the food was delicious. I would recommend this place to anyone!

Pinay C.

Yelp
The happiest accident finding this place and we will definitely be back! We were looking for a place to have dinner before braving traffic back to the IE. Caribbean food is all but nonexistent in our area, so we wanted to take the opportunity to have some while in LA. Seeing as we were already in the Hollywood area, we thought we'd try this place out. The fact that there was a parking lot, albeit small, it still made for much easier parking than we had been anticipating. There was a little hesitation upon entering, as we were the only patrons at the time. I chalked it up to still being relatively early for dinner service. Suffice it to say, we were greeted warmly and seated quickly. Started off sharing a beef patty and oh. My. Goodness. Straight up. We were not prepared for the flavor packed in that super flakey patty. *chef's kiss* We asked our server Shay what were the most popular dishes, to which she replied that the oxtails and jerk chicken were the most popular, and that her personal favorite was the jerk salmon. Ordered the jerk chicken and oxtails and we were not disappointed. Oxtails were so tender, the meat fell off the bones with barely a touch of the fork. Jerk chicken, which might have been just ever so slightly over cooked, was so incredibly flavorful, I could absolutely forgive the 2 minutes over. So impressed with the meal, my boyfriend and I each took home a bottle of the jerk sauce. And I had to take 2 beef patties home for my sisters. Ambiance is casual, comfortable, and friendly. We can't wait to have another reason to come out to LA to dine here again!

Mohmmed M.

Yelp
Wow very proud of this place I remember when it first opened for some reason I had doubts based off a negative review..Was late night and no spots were open and I gave it a shot and my mind was blown...The amount of effort and love they put into their food is insane...The beef patty was MAGNIFICENT....Quality of food...Content on social media is excellent..I'm rooting for you guys and I will be back soon!!!

Matthew F.

Yelp
Spontaneously found this place after the gym. They have some pretty good dishes! They ran out of the chicken soup so I tried a beef version and it was really good. So much flavor!

Princess Y.

Yelp
Had a craving for something tasty & flavorful and The Taste of Caribbean appeared on my deliver app, so I decided to give them a try. The jerk chicken is packed with so much flavor and the spice level is on point! Rasta pasta is creamy and delicious. Oxtails came in huge portions and just as flavorful as you imagine. I'm so glad I stumbled upon TTOC on my app. I will definitely order again and refer my friends!

Leslie G.

Yelp
Had the Jerk Chicken, with a side of rice & warm cabage salad. Im Keto, so I didn't have the rice. The salad was ah-amazing! Was told that next time I could order double salad instead of rice. My husband ate all his, so I'm confident it was bomb as well. The Jerk was solid, a little sweet & definitely spicy. Great service. We also had Beef Patties. They were a little spicy too. Took one for the road. 10/10 recommend. My husband says, "whoever was back there in the kitchen on the 1's & 2's was cuttin up somethin vicious. Rocking the f**** out the mic, droppin bars. Sh** was all the way ."

Sierr W.

Yelp
Let me start my saying that this was after 2am. When you find a place open until 4am serving food you expect mediocre, more of a food truck experience..but this was anything but. The server was polite and attentive. Being that it was so late I expected a wait time, but the food came out right away and it was hot and fresh. Very impressed!! The restaurant is nice and spacious inside. Great place to attend in the day or night. Now let's get to the food. I had the jerk shrimp Jerk Shrimp Rasta Pasta. 10/10. Best food I ever had late night for sure. It is spicy, but man worth every bite. Only thing I wasn't too fond of was the chaser salad. The dressing was too vinegary for my taste, but that's an easy fix. Overall 10/10 recommend!

B B.

Yelp
Great food!!! Made me think of meals in Aruba and laying on the beach while listening to the children play and chatter in Papiamento. Love the Caribbean

Shannon F.

Yelp
Oxtail plate... I paid $42.00 for a kids meal. The plantain was extra cost which I purchased on the side. I took 3 bites of my rice & peas and it's almost done. The oxtail meat portion came in a small bowl (with 3/4 bones of meat, fat & potatoes). Definitely not worth the money or the drive. I have heard great things about this place and traveled far to taste it. Very sad about my experience tonight!

Rohan K.

Yelp
Drove all the way from SF to eat here! Very good! Had a wonderful time with amazing food and service! Ambience inside was beautiful. Fs coming back again.

Mursalin H.

Yelp
The jerk chicken (rice and pasta, we ordered two different variants) were overwhelmingly hot for the jerk chicken we had before. I dont mind the hit, but it was overpowering. The service was slow and music was just too loud for eating in comfort. Not an excellent experience.

Artiera C.

Yelp
Wow! What a hidden gem! I just found out about this place yesterday and I'm already ready to go back. Hands down the best Caribbean food in the city!

Jeroslyn J.

Yelp
Chef Bernard is the truth. I followed him from his first spot near Hollywood boulevard. His Caribbean food is true to the culture. Delicious. Perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. I remember them mentioning that they do brunches on the weekends.

Roshun W.

Yelp
Amazing food definitely going back. The service was amazing. The ambiance was very welcome and they showed great hospitality

Tatyana H.

Yelp
The pasta is way too cheesy. My bf said the same about his shrimp pasta. Jerk chicken is very tasty but I was expecting more of a sauce without so much cheese. Kinda disappointing but overall it's okay.

Roel C.

Yelp
Alright Y'all! One of my Fav Beef Patties here in SoCal for me! Pretty close to Beef Patty from Jamaica. I really like the Flakey crust, it wasn't dry like many other places. This is honestly the only place i've tried where it was flakey and moist. The beef filling was seasoned perfectly with just enough heat. I also ordered the Rum Cake for dessert which was amazing, it wasn't overly too rum soaked. Had a little drizzle of icing. so had to let it come to room temp, it's made in house. They were open pretty late, So much inside seating and big parking lot. The staff was so friendly, she suggest i try the Jerk Chicken and Lobster Mac n cheese next time. Go Check them out y'all and support local business!

Parvez R.

Yelp
Food was overpriced for the portion received. Not all great, wouldn't recommend anyone to go try their food nor will I ever go back. Best of luck

Alejandra L.

Yelp
I usually order from here with my co workers and the portions are very generous but I just picked up food and received 3 big potatoes and hardly any meat. For 32$ I'm definitely disappointed!!

Nic D.

Yelp
We ordered chicken and beef patties.they were mediocre at best. We also ordered rum cake which was very dry. The frosting was crumbly and dry, which is unusual for frosting. It tasted like an over baked vanilla cake. We will not be returning.

Malcomb H.

Yelp
Great food and very good service! I had the jerk with the cabbage ans of course a beef patty.

Eric P.

Yelp
First time eating here and have already decided what I'll have next time I visit. The food was fresh and delicious with great atmosphere. Truly a gem.

Christian T.

Yelp
Amazing Salmon cooked perfect and taste amazing!! I would come again over and over again!
